S01.E10: Week Five in Utopia

Recommended Posts

Poor Bella.  If ever there was a man sent to Utopia who was clearly meant to be her love interest, it's Cal, but...nope.  She even managed to irritate the man who is all about love, harmony and "exchanging energy" right off the bat.  I feel bad for her, she has no idea why everyone always snaps at her, or that her personality and communication tactics are so grating.

Cal's homemade clothes amuse me.  Especially his hat.

I would buy jewelry made by Hex just to show her some support, because she is my absolute favorite in this group.  I adore her.  But, I guess it would be a waste of money since the whole thing is about to be cancelled.  That really bums me out, I was absolutely prepared to watch this for a year.  After a summer of Frankie Grande, I find these people fun and easy to enjoy by comparison.

Looks like Rob is going to take over the Rumplestiltskin role that Red left open.  I can't wait to see if he does eventually rip himself in two during a meltdown!

On our Fox news channel news they have already announced the cancelation.  The ads to be on next years Utopia is confusing.

This is the most boring show.  Katie - what a mess.

Geez, viewership really has fallen off, hasn't it?  Such a shame, for all the potential this concept had.  While some of what I think are the problems are still there, I noticed that in this episode, they seem to be trying to right the cart.  I think Red leaving was good, because it was always going to be typical reality-show drama instead of what this show said it was trying to while he was around.  But they are trying to set up some rules and develop a sense of identity for the community, which I had hoped to see earlier.

I think Katie was a production plant, sent there just to remind them all that they had lost their ideas for Utopia and instead got caught up in the ridiculousness we saw in the early weeks.  And she was right on that point.  I think they all were just screwing around and doing their own thing and not really spending significant time in actually developing the community in any meaningful way, and maybe they needed to do that to get to know each other and get settled in.  But I'd really like to see this continue, now that the newness has worn off for them; I think we might start seeing some of what we all *wanted* to see!  Or maybe I'm just dreaming.

I kind of feel sorry for Bella because she really does get on everyone's nerves all of the time, but at the same time, I get so frustrated with her.  She is not a teen or twenty-something, when most people who are that grating start figuring it out.  I mean, a lot of people stay pretty annoying, but most usually at least identify some of the things they do that drive people crazy at some point in their development.  For example, I am a talker.  Talkity talk talk talk.  And I have a tendency to interrupt people or finish their thoughts for them, or to dominate the conversations, when it's a conversation that I'm really in to.  But I KNOW THIS about myself, and I know that people don't like it, and so I try to be mindful of it and to not do it.  Another friend has a habit of sounding really bossy, but she knows it, and will apologize when it happens despite her efforts to avoid doing it.  You know, like adults do.  But Bella seems to have no clue about any of her personality or communication tics that annoy people, and I can only assume it's from a lack of insight or self-awareness, or a lack of caring.

I think she was there to tell people that her animal ways were the only animal ways.

she lectured the Utes, read her manifesto, and left.

I watched it last night, first time since the premiere.  It was fun putting faces to the asses from the live feed thread.

Re self-awareness, I was surprised when someone suggested to Katie, in a non-judgmental manner, that she talked too much and her response was "Really?"  Sometimes people are clueless, and criticism really can be constructive--maybe she'll watch the footage with an eye toward that.  Maybe?

And speaking of criticism, ol' "Powderkeg" Rob is fucking ridiculous.  He threw tantrums, dishes, papers, insults.  Be still.

Rob seems like one of those guys who breaks all his knuckles putting his fist through a wall, which I've never understood.  Is that guy's position that his temper is just simply beyond his control (because, bullshit) or does the pain release endorphins or what the hell is up with that, anyway?

You realize she was reported to be a former porn actress.

You don't mean because she was supposed to read all the notes production send her that were in her notepad?

No, I hadn't heard this, but it doesn't make me like her any less.  Show me video where she harms animals or children and I will rethink my feelings about her, but if she did porn and was a consenting adult at the time, I don't see why that should matter to me.  She has never tried to represent herself as someone without flaws, and based on what I've seen of her with my own eyes, I think she seems like an intelligent, funny, hard working, interesting, complicated person who would be fun to converse with.

I love how in the middle of the episode the narrator stated that "the pioneers are entirely self-reliant in Utopia.  They make their own money and pay their own bills."  Except for all the freebies that are continually given to them by production.

Self-reliant -- seriously ?  I would think these guys should be self-sufficient by this point, but they aren't.  Do they make their own electricity and propane ? Do they make purify their own water ? And with the except of dairy products, do they make any of their own food ?   Nope, nope and nope.   Aside from the occasional art sale off the website, they make all their money from tours of the zoo ... correction, Utopia compound which won't last once the weather gets colder.  So, 6 weeks into the experiment and these clowns have effectively done nothing towards building a sustainable infrastructure for paying the bills.

Anyone that watches the feeds knows that Utopia is so far from being self-reliant.   And that there is no Sour Patch Kids tree on the property.

ETA: I still can't believe this is all they could put together from 10 days in the Utopia compound -- from the day after Red's Departure to Rob's fiance visit.  Because it was so boring.

I can't decide if it's good or bad that it's unlikely to last long enough for any of that to matter. It would be funny if they did have to try to hold out a full year with production hiding all the blatant manipulation and freebies.

Ever since Narrator Bizarro tweeted out his fantasy about releasing a mountain lion into the compound at dawn, I enjoy watching him grit out the ridiculous canned observations he's been handed.

Either there's blackmail footage of him in a compromising position with one of the Topes during sequester or some Brink's employee is exhausted from shoveling the cash out at Bizarro's house.

Lol.  I guess no one is still watching.

Yes, there they sit on my dvr... waiting for cancellation on my part or the network's part.

But I see they've rolled it back to just once a week, huh? Oh and to hear of Red's leaving that makes me wonder if the show is even more boring now?

ETA: Not that I believe that to be possible! *laughs*
