I'm so old. I have never heard of her.

I know the name but could not identify any of her songs. She was apparently a musical guest on SNL in season 40 (Host Martin Freeman) and season 47 (host Oscar Isaac), and of course Bowen played her in a sketch in the season 50 opener.

“Every time I get out, THEY KEEP PULLING ME BACK IN!”

- Alec Baldwin, probably

Shit, did the audio cut out for you guys at the end of the cold open?

Not that I noticed (because sometimes I don't pay attention), but if it did, it was probably for the best...

So Kyle Mooney was just in the neighborhood?

Before I forget, I want to give props to the woman who was sitting behind Andrew and Chloe in the baby shower sketch.  Great facial expressions.

Cold Open: Of course we get more Dana Carvey. Never thought I'd see the This Is Fine dog referenced on this show, as apt as it is. That makeup job on Sarah as Matt Gaetz was creepy as hell. The makeup department just won another Emmy for that job. And man, Alec Baldwin as RFK Jr was sadly fitting.

"We got Elon and Matt Gaetz. That's Alien vs Predator." was the best line of the sketch.

Monologue: Well, Charli certainly understood the assignment. And Kyle Mooney showed up for some reason!

So, there was an Allstate ad with the PDD guys that I thought was a sketch. It was not. (EDIT: Turns out that WAS the sketch...)

Baby Shower: Oh, it's another Domingo sketch. First it was the wedding, and now Chloe is pregnant.

Wicked Screen Tests: It's been a while since we've seen an impression parade sketch. I'm officially old, I don't recognize most of these impressions anymore. I got a kick out of Sarah as Bernie Sanders. And I'm sorry Dana, but nobody holds a candle to Bill Hader when it comes to Al Pacino impressions. The real crime was that JAJ didn't appear in this one.

Thanksgiving Baking Championship: Oh, another one of THESE sketches. But Charli's cake got me bad. And "I'm from...here" was a mood.

Digital Short: Wait, THIS isn't the PDD sketch either?! This was great. But seeing Andy with a gray streak in his hair made me uncomfortable.

Banger Boyz: Speaking of making me uncomfortable, a bro podcast is kinda the last sketch I wanted to see tonight. Got a kick out of the ad reads though, like Male Chimp (a literal male chimp for your lady chimp), and Top Golf (find out which of your coworkers is an alcoholic!).

WU: I hate how Trump's awful picks are just a goldmine for comedy. "Now do a silly one!" indeed. And Bowen as Joe Exotic wasn't working until the big fake tiger claw kept attacking him. But I got a big laugh out of "Look, I'm not a perfect person" and that's it.

And then Sarah played a squirrel widow and that was great. The stagehand controlling her tail was having a fun time messing with Colin.

Commercial Acting Class: I didn't think I'd be feeling this sketch, but Marcello's intensity sold it for me. "Sorry I'm late, I parked in a crazy way." And "OKAY, HAVE IT YOURRR WAY!" killed me.

It Girl Thanksgiving: Just when I was saying "where has Kenan been this week?!" There he is! And everyone cheered! Other than that, what the hell did I just watch? The Olsen twins getting stuck in a big coat? It was the good kind of weird.

Shrek The Musical: This was unhinged. So much green paint.

Man, this was a good one! Paul Mescal hosts on December 7th.

Was that Punky in the good-nights?

And, who introduced the first song?  I know I'm gonna feel dumb when I find out because she looks so familiar.

I enjoyed the show. Except for the cold open which was not great.  Charli xcx was fun.  She was game for pretty much whatever they threw at her.  There was nothing fabulous, but nothing awful.  So that's...good.

I'm pretty grumpy this week post-election, so that may have colored my receptivity.

Heidi does a great Cher.

I can't decide if we should have a moratorium on bad-acting-class sketches.

I liked Charli better in the sketches than doing her songs.

The calling-the-cops song was lame to me. To this day, they've never topped or equalled"Dick in a Box" or "Christmastime for the Jews." Those were phenomenal.

Now get off my lawn.

I was about to be mad about no Kenan, but then he showed up for 2 minutes.

Wow, this one was pretty heavy with celebrity impressions.

I think I would have enjoyed the Digital Short if they were singing about something else.

I feel you. I just rewatched it because I couldn't make out some of the lyrics. Also: Pug getting cuffed. That's funny and cute.

I am so out of touch. Who is Paul Mescal?

Yes!  I watched after I read this so I made a point of looking. Ego was even pointing at her. Did she do anything in the show?

Song introducer?  I got nothing.

Song introduced by Julia Fox. I have no idea who that is but Google is my friend.

Thought I was going crazy missing the PDD sketch. Not a real fan of most of this episode but Charlie XCX seemed pretty willing to go for anything.

She didn't. I assume she was just there and they let her go onstage. I am not sure I remember that happening before with a former cast member (it has a few time with hosts). I was happy to see her.

Bowen and Chloe played Charlie XCX and Julia Fox in the It Girl Thanksgiving sketch.

She is also in Charli's video, apparently.

Beyond being involved with Kanye West, her best known role has SNL ties - she was Adam Sandler's mistress in Uncut Gems.

I have had my ups and downs with PDD but I feel bad for them being cut and barely airing almost the entire season.

Some other cut moments (if a dress report is up on Reddit later I will post it - all of this is from the Saturday Night Network hot take show).

JAJ was cut from the impression tape (he was Brian Cox - he was also cut from Update last season as Cox)

Emil was cut from Update, talking about the election.

Sketches:

BONJOUR HI: The Issa Rae episode sketch returns, with Chloe replacing Kate. Charli was a field reporter. Mikey returned to his role from the first sketch.

ROYAL WIGS: Bowen asks Charli, Andrew, Heidi, Chloe, Mikey if they look dumb while wearing Mozart wigs. Andrew and Marcello duel when Bowen says dating cousins is dumb. A clip of this was shown during the football game.

KAIDEN: Heidi and James are bragging about their child Kaiden, who calmed them down after the election, and doesn't sound like a 4 year old upstairs taking off his pants and dressing up as a clogged toilet for Halloween. Charli and Marcello are a couple, as are Andrew and Ashley. 4 year old Kaiden at the end of the sketch got high-fives from Heidi and James.

Joking aside, I actually do think the podcast sketch gave some insight into why. It captured a certain mood and personality in a way that wasn't as clunky as SNL so often is (see the cold open). I was especially impressed by how smooth Emil Wakim is after not even a half season.

I kept thinking Lorne has a wonderful jobs program - for Alec Baldwin.

The makeup department did a great job but as soon as he opened his mouth it was Trumpwin all over again.

Oh I agree, and I was dead serious. This whole ep emphasized flimsy, false, meaningless structures for life, from BRAT to the girlfriends on vacation betraying the husband/fiancé to about half the screentests for Wicked which were people who were famous for being famous more than talent. It's a superficial world, where people don't think about the consequences of their choices.

Yeah, I'd old, but more than that, I'm someone with deep and clear values that shape what I do, and after I do it, I own it. That seems rare today. Sorry for the rant!

Quote

The video short with Andy wasn't all that great. I guess the 'joke' was that he and his wife weren't calling the cops on black people, but on white people (and a dog). However, again, I couldn't understand what was being sung.

I forgot this one ... that song was very catchy, but I could not figure out what the humor was. They chose to pick something so ridiculous that it had no substance (putting trash ... in the trash can?). If they had gone with "people parking in front of my house" or "neighborhood kids playing ball on the street hoop at 11 pm" or something, I would have gotten it. Though calling the cops seems a bit much.

This was cute. Same concept as the sketch with Dakota Johnson, but still fresh.

Thank you for posting that. I watch SNL Sunday morning on Peacock, and this was not on it. I noticed that please don't destroy was listed in the opening credits, so I wondered what happened. Anyway, this was great. I loved all the mean lines.

I will be googling a lot of names from this show. No idea who many of them are. Shannon Sharpe, Sebastian Maniscalco, Troye Sivan, Mikey Madison, Rachel Sennott, Law Roach. I may know Julia Fox -- Is she in the famous English Fox acting family?

Ah man, I'd love to see his Brian Cox impression.

CO could have been better. Although Dana Carvey does a good impression, I'm still not a fan of the reliance on him being a doddering, senile old man. I wish they'd leaned more into him being the nice, sensible contrast to Trump's insanity. But ya gotta have balance!

Loved seeing the "This is fine" meme. The Alien v Predator line was good, although I had to replay it because I couldn't understand what was said. Frankly, there were many times thruout the show when I couldn't understand what was being said.

Charli XCX's monologue was ok. Not greatly funny, but she's a good performer.

Not a big fan of the baby shower/whatever sketches they do. Again, I couldn't always understand the lyrics. However, Marcello has quickly risen to being one of my favorites.

I wish the Wicked auditions sketch had been better. Some of the impressions were ok -- Charli's Adele was good -- but the material wasn't all that funny.

I'm so tired of the baking championship sketches, too. The only thing I liked was that Marcello's pilgrim had potato chip lips.

The video short with Andy wasn't all that great. I guess the 'joke' was that he and his wife weren't calling the cops on black people, but on white people (and a dog). However, again, I couldn't understand what was being sung.

I thought the Banger Boyz sketch was pretty good. As far as I could tell, it wasn't much of an exaggeration. Trump's team knew how to reach that demographic. I also thought Charli was good here, and the sponsors were pretty funny.

WU - I hadn't heard that there was some contest for a new national anthem. I guess this is something else I need to google. I kind of liked Bowen's Joe Exotic. Man, it seems so long ago that I watched Tiger King. PETA-phile was a good line. "Is this America or Europe France?" And Peanut the Squirrel's widow (Hazel Nut) was ... ok. I wish Sarah hadn't been so hammy, but that's her schtick.

The acting class for commercials sketch had its moments. "Have it YOUR WAY!" and "WHAT'S IN YOUR WALLET?!? was great.

It Girl Thanksgiving Special - Of course I've heard of Marc Jacobs, but I had no idea what he looked like. Then when Kenan popped up, I was all, "Oh yeah! Kenan hadn't appeared yet." Heidi's Cher was pretty great.

Shrek the Musical - Bowen had some good lines, but overall I didn't laugh here.

I was impressed by Charli XCX's performances in every sketch. I didn't even mind her music.

The political sketch they need to do is Kamala commiserating with Hilary about how they'll go down in history as the two candidates who lost to Donald Trump.

Wait a second. Was the PDD video cut? Like I said, when I watched on PeacockTV, it wasn't there, but I assumed it aired during the regular showing last night.

BTW, I meant to mention that at the beginning of the Acting Class sketch when Charli was sitting, she suddenly reminded me of Daphne from Frasier.

I wasn't wild about the song (I think the joke was a combination of how unreasonable they were complaining about non-issues while also referring to the cops as pigs?) but it was absolutely stunning to look at and I laughed at them dancing with cops.

I enjoyed the first Domingo with Ariana Grande's bad singing. I thought this was a fun way to revisit it with the escalation to Kelsey being back with Matt and pregnant. Spelling out D-O-M-I-N-G-O to Hot to Go amused me. But I would have made Kelsey's pregnancy belly bigger.

I googled the names of all the celebrities impersonated. My memory was refreshed on a couple of them, while others were new to me. What I wonder is why these particular celebs were chosen. If they were recently in the news for some reason, or maybe the SNL cast member just said, "Oh, I can do so-and-so!"

Shannon Sharpe, Jojo Siwa, Sebastian Maniscalco, Troye Sivan, Mikey Madison, Rachel Sennott, Law Roach, Julia Fox.

Cold Open:
Dana again. Sigh.
Alien vs. Predator wins the week.
Sarah as Gaetz. He looked like a Batman villain.
Alec Baldwin as RFK Jr. Didn't see that coming. <shudder>
Easy Jake Paul jab. No pun intended.

Opening Monologue:
Okay, this time I knew who the host was and was somewhat familiar with her work--at least on the Top 40 charts.
So brat means unabashedly being "that bitch"?
Charli handled her monologue well with not much detectable nervousness.

Didn't care for the baby shower sketch as a rehash of the previous bridal shower sketch but I was impressed with Charli's American accent. Charli singing Chappell Roan's song off-key, OMG. I do like how SNL is having the Taylor Swift acolytes take tongue-in-cheek shots at each other.

Wicked auditions. I think Adele would've been amazing as Glinda. Bowen's Fran Leibowitz had a tad too much Woody Allen. Not a great Bernie Sanders. Maybe should've had JAJ or Dana take that one. Ooh, very bad Al Pacino. That should've been Bowen. Bad Bunny still refusing to speak English.

Charli was killing it in the cake sketch. Was her character's turkey cake supposed to be giving birth?

An Andy Samberg song. Was that Donna Kelce getting arrested, lol? (No, SNL wouldn't dare.) I think I'd already seen most of the references for that song on reddit. AITA and similar subreddits.

Banger Boyz, meh. Con.Dums. Tittybaby Airport. Charli's vocal fry. Please tell me the guys on the IRL podcast aren't this dumb.

Charli xcx's 360 is solid bop, and yay, she wasn't lip syncing. Just a bit of autotune.

Weekend Update:
Gaetz was created when Frankenstein raped Dracula. Dang, Colin was bringing the flames!
I didn't understand the CPAP machine joke.
Drakkar Noir is still a thing? Ugh, I remember if you walked by it in the drugstore the smell would cling to your clothes like forever.
Hmm, at least 6 million years before a female POTUS. Let me put that on my calendar.
Not gonna plug chokemejeffgoldblum.com into my browser but I might like to see some screenshots.
Peanut the Squirrel's widow, Hazel. Sarah's costume was fabulous.

Strip mall acting class. Loved Marcello's vibe. WHAT'S IN YOUR WALLET?!!?

Okay, there was a whole lot more autotune in Charli's second performance. Wow.

It Girl Thanksgiving. Kenan does a perfect Law Roach but most of the rest of the sketch went right by me.

Made out with Shrek. Shrek was getting with the whole theatre audience apparently. He nasty. Looks like a reservation at Domino's just opened up. Have fun, Pablo!

Charli xcx did a excellent job. She was totally game and brought tonnes of energy. 10/10 for her American accent. She can host again and again.

I don't know who Charli-XCX is or why she merited being host AND musical guest (something usually only reserved for the biggest stars).  But one thing I did like about her is that her songs were short.

I mean that sincerely as a compliment, by the way.  I've thought for decades that songs were getting too long and bloated.  Most Beatles songs were two or three minutes.

I'm starting to feel bad for Jane Wickline. She appears in almost nothing, and when she does, she's so stiff and unconvincing.

She strikes me as that kid who wants to be part of what's going and the other kids don't dislike her, but when they try to let her join in the fun she just brings the whole thing down.

This had potential. The performances should have been sharper. There were a couple of lines of Charli's that I couldn't understand. And I figured it would turn out that the son was actually how the parents were describing him. Lazy, predictable writing. It wasn't a surprising twist.

I get that people complain. I don't get why any of that is a big deal. The one exception is throwing dog poop into an already-emptied trash can, which is rude. If the point was that loose trash means trash companies won't pick it up, then the song's lyrics should have said that. That's my point overall ... what was chosen for the bit, and the way it was portrayed, was poorly conceived given there were so many other, better choices. My guess is that it was sloppy because the main point was "calling cops on white people," which, while it might get some knee-jerk laughs, is also sloppy. Busy bodies call cops because of behaviors, not color.

When this skit was done the first time, it was very funny - *because the cakemakers didn't realize how bad their creations were.* The humor came from the juxtaposition of each contestant's description of their cake compared to the reveal of the actual cake, and then the reaction of the judges. Since that first time, the show inexplicably has dropped that element and instead just shows barely engaged bakers lazily showing their lame efforts. This time they made a token nod to effort by having one cake be actually good (and yet was ignored, for some reason). I'm not sure whoever writes these skits understands their humor.

I think the premise assumed that these busybodies were making a big deal out of innocuous behaviour. They called the cops on a girl scout selling cookies.
