Okay, I was confused about the woman with the trapped arm. She seemed to be conscious and able to communicate. Why did they need her wife to consent to the amputation, not her?  And don’t they have access to a crowbar?!??  Happy to see there was a way to resolve this with all limbs intact.

I didn't think this was that bad, but I am sure that I have lowered my expectations.  A lot.

The woman couldn't get her arm free because she was still making a fist?  Puh-lease, just let the coin go...  And what are the odds that if she had retrieved that coin, it would have just been a token for one free drink on the ship or something.  Yikes.

So, the captain is talking about the costume competition with medical staff and not the cruise/activity staff?  And anyone can just walk into his cabin without even knocking (and the doctor put his FEET on the captain's sofa!!!)?  And the captain lets someone else wear his uniform?  I really don't understand myself as I am still watching this show for some reason even though my eyes are constantly rolling throughout it.

I have to say, Joshua Jackson did a hell of a Jack Sparrow … had the voice, the mannerisms down cold.

But they’re trying to make us believe that Tristan, as hot as he is, won best costume in a basic captain’s outfit? Even if only crew members entered the contest, “Dr. Acula” and “Nurse-Ferato” were both better, not to mention Velma the host and several others. That was just dumb. I enjoyed Avery’s ceiling fan costume, I’m a sucker for those word play costumes.

Is Dr. Acula — an undead character — another hint that Max is actually dead?

The show is leaning hard into the whole Max versus Tristan thing and it's possibly the worst aspect of this show (and that's saying a lot.) And I don't think it went unnoticed that when they were both dressed up as Neptune and Poseidon, Max's trident was bigger than Tristan's. Real subtle, show.

Would the captain be wearing his hat inside? I would think he'd only be wearing it outside, on deck.

It surprised me that nobody thought to bring a oxygen tank to allow her to breathe until somebody competent could come and rescue her.

Even a snorkel would have worked.

Wait just one second.  You're expecting MEDICAL staff to think of this?  MEDICAL staff on a SHIP (boat?) no less?  You and your pesky logic, @AnimeMania!!!

I enjoyed this episode, as silly as it was.  I enjoyed all the costumes but don't understand why they couldn't have made an agreement that Max go as Jack Sparrow and Tristan go as Poseidon.  I would have given the award to Tristan as Poseidon, that costume was way better than simply donning Don Johnson's uniform.

I liked the fake zombies and the explanation that they were bitten by African tsetse flies.  And that Werewolf guy ended up with Bunny after all.

The cave storyline was a bit weak.  As pointed out above, why not bring an oxygen tank?  Crowbar?  Why not bring a chisel and a sledgehammer or something else to break apart some of the rock?   Why did the solution have to be as simple as "open your fist"?

He kept that hat playing strip poker with his crew. He doesn't wear socks, like Sonny Crockett on that old show Miami Vice. The crew has multiple changes of formal wear in lieu of uniforms. I hope that was just the Captain's office because the doctor's room was much more swank.

I'm now all in with the Tommy's imagination theory just like a mark at a wrestling show knows its fake but enjoys himself anyway.

Seems like they would've brought somebody from the engine room that actually has some equipment they could've used.

I think so because it's part of his uniform.  I could see taking it off while eating his meals though.

“Dr. Acula”

I remember when JD of the tv show Scrubs wrote a screenplay titled 'Dr. Acula.'  That was a great show!

When did they allow open flames aboard a cruise ship?  Kerosene lamps, or whatever those were, was a terrible idea!

I thought that was strange too.  Initially I thought it was a crew-only contest (since they said that Tristan always wins) but one of the prizes was two excursion tickets, and crew members have no need for excursion tickets.  So the contest must have been open to everyone.

Then again, on this show, the medical staff regularly goes off on excursions or crew-only parties while the ship is docked.  And all three of them at the same time, leaving absolutely nobody onboard to tend to any guests who are staying onboard.  So I guess none of the traditional rules are applicable to the Odyssey staff.

I could understand asking the wife what to do in case the woman did go unconscious or the water got too high for her to talk. But neither happened and it seemed like Avery was going to start cutting the arm off without even telling the woman. That felt very bizarre.

And I don't know if they were in the middle of nowhere of what, but would they call in the ship medical team in a case like this or would they call local paramedics?

I also feel the need to say that woman was really dumb. Wandering into a sea cave that you can barely fit into and reaching into dark holes?

I know! I would be pissed if I was a passenger who entered and lost to an employee.

This ship seems to have a lot of theme weeks. Singles week, Halloween week, plastic surgery week, etc. Is that typical of cruises? I've only been on two cruises and neither had any kind of theme.

I think the excuse was that no one could get there before the high tide came in.   Also, a typical tourist ignores the warnings and wanders off right into danger.  Growing up in Florida, I saw plenty of tourists who left their brain at home before traveling.  🙄

Its typical of an anthology type show (for the B stories) which hasn't gotten  enough big TV name guest to depend upon them and go without the theme gimmick

I just rolled my eyes.  Just from the perspective that he was supposed to be Captain Stubing from The Love Boat, Captain Stubing had white hair and spent many episodes dressed in a white captain's shirt, white shorts and white knee socks.

OMG! I'm literally having this identical conversation with a friend of mine right now. We have been thinking of future theme episodes:

Birth week - a couple dozen pregnant women want one last babymoon and all end up delivering simultaneously.

Harvest week - Patients receive organ transplants and recover onboard.

Cardiac week - where at least one cardiac ailment is actually unrequited love.

Hospice week - where we finally see something Ryan Murphyish...

I don't think that you'd want to do much with the rocks because you don't want more to fall and trap them further.

Also allow me to express my disbelief at the size of both guest and crew quarters. They are enormous. All the crew would be doubled, tripled or quadrupled up and all but the most luxurious guest quarters would be smaller too.

A few episodes ago, the captain was lighting candles in his cabin with a fire in the fireplace.  I was yelling. no open flames on a cruise ship!  I remember on Top Chef Cruiseship or whatever that season was called, there was a lot of discussion of how the cheftestants could cook without being able to use an open flame grill, which is not allowed in the main galleys.  They were only allowed in the specialty restaurant galley.

And yes, I was thinking, open the fist.  Not to mention just using a scuba tank and crowbar; surely if they could get a table saw, they could get those.  And no crew in the costume contest.  And about five hundred other activities that would never occur on a real ship.  And how does anyone under the age of 50 know Captain Stubing, anyway?

Something I would never do after reading old James Bond books involving moray eels!

And for those wondering about themed cruises, they are very common but usually involve some kind of entertainment theme rather than medical emergencies.  Halloween on the High Seas is one of them.  And usually do not take over the entire ship, but do sometimes close off venues just for those guests.  Cruise boards will always warn you to check for such (and other such  large groups) before booking.

I was totally onboard with the captain's anti-Halloween stance. I've disliked it since I was a kid. It was always such an underwhelming holiday to me.

This show is silly, but I enjoy it.

I was also wondering about the huge , luxury rooms for passengers and crew. No way would the crew get these type of rooms and some of these people don’t seem like millionaires. The doctor acts childish most of the time and did he happen to bring two full costumes on board? Also too much of the crew being involved in the ships activities; in real life they would spend their down time resting and away from the guests.

No way would the ship’s staff do medical procedures on land-their insurance would never cover it. Of course the doctor and nurses would never be on the excursions anyway.

I was guessing that they order the costumes to be shipped to wherever the ship docks or wherever they receive mail and pick them up when the ship is docked? So definitely some advanced planning needed.

I was a bit disappointed that they didn't emphasize the theme from the Love Boat a bit more after Tristin won the contest. It was there in the music, but very faint. Someone like me, who is old and has seen every episode of the Love Boat more than once, could easily pick it out, but I bet lots of viewers didn't hear it.

And agree with those upthread - the costume didn't even look like what Captain Stubing wore! I'm going to stay with this because of Don Johnson and because I want to see where it goes, but it could be so much better!

I don't think he was supposed to actually look like Captain Stubing.  I think the joke was that earlier in the episode, some women walked by Don Johnson and gushed something like "OMG that guy is dressed as Captain Stubing" not knowing that he was the actual captain.

So I think the joke is that Tristan borrowed Don Johnson's uniform and that the contest announcer also said he was "an adorable Captain Stubing", or something like that.

Reminded me of an old school raccoon trap I read about:

The traps function in this way: An animal puts his paw inside the enclosed trap, which should not exceed 2 inches in diameter, according to state guidelines. By trying to pull on the bait inside, a spring is triggered, closing the trap on the animal's arm.

Let go of the shiny thing lady raccoon!

Oh she had a hacksaw, but she did not sterile it nor did she have anything that would stop the bleeding or numb the pain.  She had no way to carry the woman out of the narrow passage once the woman fainted from the pain.

I can see why you wouldn’t bother to sterilize it. It’s not like the cave where she was trapped was sterile.

No, ships rarely have theme weeks.  There might be a large group on certain cruises, but unless you charter the entire ship, the groups generally don’t impact the other passengers.  The hat wearing Captain is wrong in so many ways.  No socks? You’ll not see that.  Wearing a tux—-you’ll never, ever see that. Captains wear their dress whites or blues, depending on the weather.  I don’t know what it is with Don Johnson, but to me he looks dirty and messy, like he needs a flea dip.

Most pointless episode yet.  Out of all those intricate costumes in the hall, they give the grand prize to a crewmember who just borrows the Captain's outfit?  Yeah, that'll get the organizers some points on Yelp.

Well, we can't compare this cruise ship with your regular cruise ship. It's modeled after real life luxury cruise ships which are much smaller and have huge luxury rooms and go for about $10000/week per person.  They are a much different quality and experience than the cruises your average person goes on where there are thousands of passengers stuffed into small rooms.  Think The White Lotus versus Motel Six.  I checked out the webpages of one such luxury cruise line and it was very much like the ship in this show. Until now I had no idea such things existed.

The only time we see anyone off the ship they are on the same beach with the same rocks each time. We never see anyone off the ship anywhere else even though other places are mentioned.

Every time I watch this show I honestly think I am watching The Twilight Zone and these people are actually dead and not living persons on a real world ship. Finding out that luxury cruise ships exists made me pause a moment but no, I still think the ship and the people are in some alternate reality, like limbo or purgatory or some first level of hell or something. This show is so weird. But yet I watch. It grows on me.

At least where I live, it's multi-layered. Last Saturday, the bars had their Halloween parties which cater to everyone from college to late 20's. Some of them might also have had parties tonight since Thursdays are typically a Friday pregame in that area. Definitely lots of kids trick-or-treating until about 9:00. Then I think parents of children (and maybe teens) are trying to corral all their sugared up kids to bed. Also our county schools are closed tomorrow so trick-or-treating has gone a little later tonight than usual.

Upon further review, the other networks are going with new programs. FOX even had to plan for where the World Series would have fallen after the playoffs completed.

So, for some reason, I watched this show again when it re-aired last night... and I think at the very beginning, they said it's a costume contest for the crew that the passengers get to judge?  She said Tristan wins it every year.  Seems stupid, but yeah... goes with the show.

I watched several episodes tonight while avoiding...other things.  I'm in it for the actors but somehow the sum of the parts do not equal a whole.  It's off somehow.  But even for all the weirdness and stupid stuff I keep coming back to:  Nurse Whatsyourname, tie your damn hair back!  Stop leaning over patients with loose hair.  It's gross.
