Jeopardy! Season 41 (2024-2025)

I got FJ completely based on the horse racing. Totally forgot about baseball bats.

The only missed clue I got was Daisy Jones and the Six (haven't read it, but keep hearing it's good).

I got the entire category of over and under right.

Almost instaget FJ.  Triple crown led me to horse racing, and I chose the most obvious city connected with the horse racing triple crown.

I also got the TS of South Sudan, Daisy Jones & the Six, décolletage, and de rigueur.  Although, if I'd had to spell de rigueur, I would not have gotten it right.

I missed two in money, got all but Sia in Billboard, and ran the rest in the first round.

I only ran veterinary and French in DJ, but I did well; I got all but harmonium in instruments and all but Gibbon in ruined.  I missed two each in sitcoms and literary.

FJ was an instaguess I figured had to be correct.

60% / 50% / 56%

Jeez, bad night. In J I ran In the Zeitgeist, missed one in Road Trip, two in Tarot and Stock Symbols, three in Movie Moments, and four in Gladiators. In DJ I missed one in Animal Planet and Leftovers, and three in everything else.

But I got FJ! Was not at all sure; just threw it out to say something. And it was an asterisk!

TSes: (J had 3; DJ had 10 + both DDs (+ two clues left on the board)) I got Chevron, overlook (DD), You Shook Me All Night Long. Was annoyed I didn't get CrowdStrike because it was mentioned in a podcast I listened to either this morning or yesterday.

I got the entire partial category of 3 letters the same wrong.

I'll be interested to see if the board is cleared next game, Mikey seemed to look back and forth a lot before choosing a clue, something I don't understand, just pick something!

The FJ clue gave me enough to be pretty sure it was either Icarus or Daedalus, but I couldn’t remember which was the father and which was the son. Fortunately I guessed correctly that they were going for what I’d say is the better known of the two, giving me a rare correct response in a category where I would assume I would draw a big blank.

Sort of an instaget FJ for me tonight -- I knew immediately exactly who they were looking for, but it took a couple of seconds to remember his name.  Yay, asterisk!

I also got the TS of Crowdstrike, overlook, cellular, pronghorn, and You Shook Me All Night Long.

I feel like they're less likely to be cleared when they have celebrities reading an entire category.  And the one the other day with the songs took forever to get through each clue.

Today I said Daedalus' son...I blanked on the name "Icarus". I give myself half points. Mythology is not a strong area for me, and most of what I know came from watching Kaos (and peripheral googling that came from Kaos to fact check/gain more info).

I didn't get what the clue was going for until Ken said "Who would be shrieking in mid-air?" and couldn't get to the names fast enough.
If I was watching a recording, I would have paused it to give myself an extra 30 seconds, but I still might've only gotten to Daedalus' son.
Given that the clue did not say "the name of":

• Ovid says he "toppled, beating wild with naked arms the unsustaining air... shrieking for succour from his sire"

would "Daedalus' son" have been accepted? 
I imagine it might be in the regular portion of the game, but FJ seems to be a bit stricter sometimes.

 

Yesterday I could only say: That place in the south where they race horses.

Mikey not figuring out "You Shook Me All Night Long" after the two wrong guesses surprised me.  Her beatitudes response to the researchers clue made me laugh; she got as far as blessings, rang in, realized she didn't actually know, yet still decided to say it?

I expected to be terrible in tarot, but only missed two.  Same exact thing in gladiators.  Movies turned out to be my bad category; I missed three in movies.  I ran the other half of the first round, at least.

I ran the vocabulary category the contestants were so awful in and capitals, and got all but Benz in leftovers, but it was not a good DJ as I missed three each in everything else.

When I saw the FJ category, I knew this just wasn't my night.  I didn't have a guess upon reading it, and pretty much just tuned out until it was time for the responses to be revealed rather than reading it again and trying to think of something.  I do that a lot with religion/mythology FJ clues; if it doesn't happen to be among the few things I know or something that quickly brings to mind a guess I can consider, I'm not interested enough to try.

I wouldn't think so.  The only time identifying a character by their relationship to another character rather than by the character's name should be correct is if that's how the character is solely or primarily known in the story.

Well, you’re not entirely crazy, because Molly Hatchet was (supposedly) a real person. Given their shared preference for a certain pointy implement, it’s not surprising you mixed them up. The name even flitted through my mind for a second.

(I say “supposedly” a real person because the Internet has very little info. I tried looking her up because while I was aware of her as a historical figure, I couldn’t remember what she did. But I only found brief descriptions of her as either a prostitute or vengeful woman from the South who beheaded her customers/ lovers with an ax. All info came from message boards, mostly relating second-hand info from the band about their name origin, and I could find nothing from actual historical sites. So I am skeptical about the veracity. I think the band may have made her up.)

I watched 3 shows in a row today: Started off strong with FJ gets on Monday and Tuesday, then fizzled like Icarus today with a shrug-guess of Mercury. I was picturing a just-hatched winged god who, much like a fledgling bird, hadn’t quite learned to fly and was panicking a bit, and… yeah. I think my brain was just tired after 3 games. Icarus never even entered my mind.

It was an instaget for me - except that I couldn't remember his flipping name. I knew the story, I love Breugel's "Fall of Icarus" painting but his name was a complete blank. I was surprised that it was a triple stumper. The painting amuses me because all you can see of Icarus are his legs above the sea on (toward the bottom right).

Decent first round, terrible second. In J I ran Economics, missed one in Nonfiction, Other Names for the City, and Cohab Vocab, two in Classic TV Theme Songs, and three in Leonardo Da Vinci. In DJ, I missed one in Math & Science, two in 21st Century Cinema, Silent P, and Have Fun, three in Storming the Castle, and (not surprisingly) all five in Norse Myth.

Did not get FJ.

TSes: (J had 5 + the DD; DJ had 2) I got Robert Peary (DD), Thor Heyerdal, and John Grisham.

I got the missed clues of living in sin, Wonder Woman, The Fall Guy, and John Grisham.

I got the entire categories of economics and TV right.

But, boy did my DJ round suck.  Not my categories I guess.

I'll be watching football tonight, so checked the archive earlier.

They always leave off Ken Burns's co-directors (and it's verbal, not written, so there's no space issue), which is annoying.

The living in sin TS surprised me.

I missed three in nonfiction and two in da Vinci, but might have come up with mirror writing in that category if I'd been able to see the picture (nothing would have helped with sfumato).  I ran the rest of the first round.

I blew myth entirely (shocking, I know), and missed two each in cinema and castles (well, technically three, but I've been to Edinburgh Castle, so I'm giving myself credit that I'd have recognized the picture), so not my best DJ.  I ran math/science and fun, and got all but Psyche in silent P.

I had no idea for FJ.

I had no idea for FJ, so I just randomly picked a city not in the US, and somehow chose correctly.  I was shocked, shocked I tell you, when the correct response was revealed.

I also got the TS of living in sin, Thor Heyerdahl, Wonder Woman, Fall Guy, Grisham, and Edinburgh Castle.

You totally would have.  It was the iconic shot with the Ross Fountain below/in front of it.

Also, "grosbeak" (the bird Mehal mentioned) is generally pronounced "gross-beak" -- "gros" comes from the French, and the birds are so named because they have large "fat" beaks.

I had the same idea as the platform wearing Swiftie and went with Prague for FJ.

Mehal really took advantage of finding all three daily doubles. I wonder when the last time there was a contestant who found all three daily doubles and bet everything on each of them?

It's amazing how they're able to play all the clues in a round when they don't have a product placement category.

I saw 1968, thought of Berkeley, then Califoirnia. But that wasn't international. I realized the only university I could think of was the Sorbonne, so I guessed that, but was certain it was wrong. At least I had the right country?

Why do people put an exclamation point after their names? Why does it bother me so much? Are we supposed to be surprised that it's them? Are they shouting at us?

I think they’re just excited to be there! And saying to everyone they know, look, it’s me! I made it onto the show! (Sorry, Possibilities! Hope I didn’t trigger you! But doesn’t your name look fun with that exclamation point!)

No Jeopardy for me today. My CBS affiliate preempted it for reasons unknown. Football, maybe? I don’t have the patience to play from the archive, so I just skipped to FJ. And missed it, of course. Although at least I matched the champ with my SWAG of Beijing.

For some reason, Facebook started showing me posts from this group some weeks ago (I'm not a man, but I suppose I am pretty dull...) and this morning I saw this post. I remember Ken commenting on his wager of $1337 (anyone remember leet speak?) but I didn't realize his ending amount was a palindrome. Now I'm wondering if he got it wrong on purpose...😄

Yes, you had right country and right city, just the wrong answer. It was my answer too because somehow I missed they were asking for the city.  But I feel a little less stupid since it was at least in the right city.

I really thought I had the correct FJ answer with Prague, as 1968 unrest screamed Czechoslovakia to me. I was a kid, but I have a distinct memory of watching the Russian tanks roll into the streets of Prague on the nightly news. 😞 My mind never even went to Paris as a possible answer.

Shacking Up was my first thought, too. There is a book I know of by that title but it definitely isn't about Victorian times! (Actually there are a few, at least; the one I'm thinking of is subtitled "The Smart Girl's Guide To Living In Sin Without Getting Burned" and was published in 2003; the others I saw while looking that up are romance novels.)

Wasn’t sure what reaction to make for this post, as there doesn’t seem to be a “hmm…that’s weird” button…

I’m wondering if there would also be a significance to the number if he got it right, since I would assume/ hope he was thinking positively. If correct, his final score would have been $38,937. Does that mean anything to anyone?

Or maybe he really didn’t care since he knew he was winning either way.

Doesn't mean anything to me. I wonder if he wanted to bet that amount anyway and then realized what he would have if he got it wrong, and since he couldn't be caught just decided to throw it for funsies.

What?? Are they having an identity crisis??? Do they think they need to fill out their names in the form of a question for it to be accepted as legit??? Are they confused??? Am I overthinking details on a show that turns on attention to details???????

Not a great game, but I've certainly had worse. In J I ran Zoology Glossary, missed one in "Gab", two in Oops! and French-Named Food, and three in Barbie and Speech. A bit better in DJ; I ran I Tinker, missed one in British Geography and Music & War, two in Authors Initially and It Ends with "Us", and three in TV Title Twosomes.

I got FJ and all three DDs.

TSes: (J had 3; DJ had 7) I got Cagney & Lacey, JD Salinger, and Jeeves & Wooster.

I liked everyone tonight. Wouldn't have minded seeing Mehal keep going but also happy for the new champ.

Is the category is about authors’ initials, why is just the last name acceptable? All five responses should have earned a be more specific from Ken.

That's how I feel.  Initially yours categories should need the initials.  3 named authors should need all 3 names.  People who have biblical first names should need the first names.  I'm fine with a BMS instead of an outright wrong, but what's the point of that category if you don't need that info.
