Chit-Chat: What's On Your Mind Today?

Message added by Mod-Tigerkatze,

We all have been drawn into off-topic discussions, me included. There's little that's off-topic when it comes to Chit Chat, so the only ask is that you please remember that this is the Chit Chat topic and that there's a subforum for all things health and wellness here.

Hi everyone,

I've created a topic where you can share your feelings about Election Day so that we can keep Chit-Chat a politics-free zone for those who want to escape politics.

Please remember to be understanding and supportive for those who need it and be kind to each other.

Thank you.

79 degrees here and landlord gave heat. Why???

Y’all have to educate me here.  Is this some kind of big city (NYC?) thing? That landlords are required to “give heat” and the tenant has no control over the thermostat or even whether there is or isn’t heat?

Yes, basically, the building owner controls the heat and ac.

That was the way it was when I lived in an apartment in 92.

I get it but they are at least following the law.

No, actually they're not. Here are the heating requirements for NYC:

From October 1 to May 31, the indoor temperature must be at least 68°F between 6 AM and 10 PM when the outside temperature is below 55°F. From 10 PM to 6 AM, the indoor temperature must be at least 62°F regardless of the outside temperature.

So if the landlord is sending up heat when it's 79° outside, that's not a legal requirement and a huge waste of resources.

I would have my own heat off in that case, but they are following the law. It is of course a waste because people will have their windows open in that case. There’s a start and end date and they are following it. Once it’s on, it’s on, and they don’t turn it on and off during that time period.

But that's not correct. They're providing heat within the specified dates but not according to the specified temperatures. And they do turn it on and off during the stated time period. They don't just leave the heat on constantly from October to May. That would be nuts, for exactly the reason @oliviabenson is talking about.

I actually know something about this. I was on the tenants' committee while our NYC building was still a rental, and I was on the board of directors after it went co-op, as president for one year. I fielded lots of heat-complaint phone calls, so I can reel off the regulations in my sleep.

I don’t see a maximum limit.

I don't control the heat in my apartment. It's an old building. If I want air conditioner I buy the window one and pay for it.

Heat wise I'm at the mercy of the landlord or buy my own space heater.

I give up.

It’s been in the 70s this week in NYC. We’re not getting heat. I believe the boiler has a thermostat and doesn’t turn on. If some building somewhere is giving heat in this weather they may have a crazy landlord.

So you remember a few months ago about my friend that kept blowing me off for this and that, and who I've only seen in person exactly once since they moved back to my state?

I finally ended that friendship.

Not verbally, but they haven't texted me in a week, and I've felt no incentive to initiate contact. Not after this week. I don't want to get into it, it's on another thread (if you've seen my other posts, you already know what happened). I've just finally realized that there's no point in trying to help someone that won't help themself.

I'm not sure what they're going to say if and when they ever text me. I know how stupid and petty and sounds, and this is the last thing I ever wanted to do, but I'll probably just tell them that I feel personally betrayed, and I don't think I can get past it. It sucks and I'm still afraid I'm doing the wrong thing, but at this point, I've hit the wall.

Or a defective thermostat. Either way they're not violating the law, but they're not following it either, as you and I both understand.

Last night, I was going to ask if anyone here, played video games. Anything.  A few women I know, are putting together a Stardew Valley group.  They talked about it, in the early hours of Wednesday morning. I don’t own the game, but was thinking of getting it next week, instead of buying something else, so that I would have company through gaming.  It’s another way that women have community, too.

I play games, though I'm not a woman and and I'm generally a pretty antisocial gamer. Good luck with it, though!

I got up (pre-dawn!) this morning for my last PT appointment - and it was cancelled.  Trying to decide whether to reschedule, or just let it go.  The good thing is that I went back to sleep and got up at the perfectly reasonable hour of 11am 😄

Now off to do the errands I was going to do at 9am...

Because I know you're all waiting breathlessly to hear whether I rescheduled the last PT session - I did!  And according to my therapist, I crushed it!!  And now, my ankle is really sore...

Errands done.  Tomorrow I'm dropping off donations to the local shelter charities.  I feel so accomplished.  😉

Transformers a thing again with boys?  I saw a few Optimus Primes walking around both at school and last night.  It’s quite a clunky costume for school!  Or is it more nostalgia for dad?  On the girls’ side, cowgirl/western Barbie was a thing.  My favourite was a kid who came as a car.  Another clunky one though.  Like he would take up a good part of the sidewalk/path to someone’s house.

Yeah that prequel movie came out this past summer Transformers One.

I think I'm going to the movies on Thanksgiving. No one invited me over and I don't want to stay home.

Get some delicious take-out on your way home. I'm recuperating from foot surgery & a respiratory infection so I'm not doing anything (maybe cook favorite foods and enjoy a glass or two of Prosecco). One of those great, old movies on TV would be a nice touch.

Get well soon!

takeout by me is very disappointing lately. Expensive, tiny portions and doesn't taste good.

I did that in the early 70s. Maybe a matinee of Fantasia? But the sidewalks had a lot of slushy snow, and my boots weren't waterproof. My feet were so cold sitting in the theater, I can still remember.

I don't know about where @oliviabenson is, but up here, there were places that offered Thanksgiving dinner for one last month (we Canadians celebrate in October).  You have to order ahead and then you just heat it up.  Turkey with all the fixings plus pie.

I'm seeing family members on Wednesday before Thanksgiving but I will be alone Thursday so I intend to order some nice seasonal foods from Instacart, hopefully from Citarella, the afternoon before to heat up.

I actually have not been to a Thanksgiving at all since before Covid.  Two years ago one of us got Covid at the last minute and last year I was so sick from the medication I was taking for the vasculitis that I couldn't eat anything. Let's hope this time's the charm!

My dad will be home on thanksgiving. We’re just trying to figure out what to eat.  The one thing we both liked, every year, was the stuffing cooked inside the turkey, but neither of us likes turkey, anymore. The pets didn’t eat it, either, last year, so we can’t get one to feed them for a while.  I guess we’ll see what we can afford.  We’re going out in a little while.

my dog got to enjoy his first snow of the season, yesterday.

People keep saying they've gotten snow but all we're getting here so far is rain, rain rain.  If it's going to be cold at least give me snow!

On another topic - on my FB I keep getting posts with AITA (am I the asshole) stories with comments.  I've read a few and, frankly, they sound like fiction to me.  Am I wrong?  I'd heard of this (I believe reddit?) thread before but don't know much about it.  Mostly they're pretty badly written and seem like the kind of made up drama a 15 yr old might write.

Today is apparently my "bookiversary," meaning my first kids' book, Our Three New Years! was published a year ago today.  My second book will be out some time in 2025.

A friend has been occasionally sending me links to AITA asshole posts on Reddit for years, and whenever she does I wind up reading several more.  There have always been a lot that are clearly fiction, designed to elicit a predictable response (e.g. rage bait).  And now those kind of posters aren't even bothering to write their own fiction anymore, they just have some sort of AI do it for them.  It gets called out, and a "This is fake" comment usually rises to one of the top responses, but there are still way too many people feeding the trolls.

Speaking of fake another one of those stupid lesson teacher stories showed up on my FB earlier.  This one something to do with Tolstoy and a train station in some US town or another and blah blah blah - and I am furious because I wanted to respond with "Oh really?  Nice trick considering Tolstoy never visited the US" but I hit refresh and the post is gone.  Not that anyone who reads and believes this Chicken Soup for the Soul type posts and swallows them whole would care about a minor thing like IT NOT BEING TRUE of course.

I will occasionally read some AITA posts, but so many seem fake.

Now news outlets are starting to use them as click bait.  As if it's a news story.  You know, premium journalism sites such as the New York Post and the Daily Mail.
