Ben had the women guests in the kitchen and had to give him a cooking lesson.  He was gracious and charming as usual with that killer smile.  I'm sure if he had Kate's perpetual snarl, the women would've informed him he never smiles and commented on that.

I don't know about that.  I mean women don't walk up to random men in the street, like men walk up to random women and say, "smile."

Yeah I think that is why the guests response to Kate triggers many to think it's sexist. I am not being hyperbolic when I say that I rarely go a day without a stranger telling me or one of my female companions to smile as we walk down the street, I can literally not think of a single time a male companion of mine has had that said that to them and it's not because me and my female friends are dour sourpusses and my male friends are all shiny, happy people skipping down the street with a smile on their face.

But the thing is -- they aren't "random" and it isn't walking down a "street."  They have rented a luxurious yacht for a lot of money and the people who are serving them have a job because they rented a yacht.  I don't think it's unreasonable to expect the staff to be like Amy -- good at her job, warm and friendly -- or like Ben, warm and friendly while having to give an impromptu teaching lesson.

Kate not only doesn't smile but her countenance strongly suggests that she finds the guests beneath her.  There's a huge contrast between Amy and Kate when serving their guests.

I could be wrong, but wasn't it the female guests that commented as well on the smiles?

I just don't see commenting on her smile as being sexist.  I would be willing to bet if the men on the boat walked around like Kate, their glumness would be commented on.

If I were pooling tips with someone like Kate I'd be fucking pissed.  You only have what -- a few days to make these people comfortable in a yacht they rented.  Act like a dick on your own time.

It's hard for me to feel any "oh poor Kate, even though she personifies stereotypical golddigging behavior, she may or may not be a victim of *subtle* sexism because her guests commented on her lack of smiles" when one episode she basically told us she had a sugar momma and she wants a sugar daddy, so yachting!

And as this recap article notes:

"She came out of the box strong tonight, committing about a zillion violations of every sexual harassment policy anywhere by asking Andrew to put on tight shorts and shirt to shake his booty and be a naughty cabana boy for their female guests. OMG. Where is that allowed? Do sexual harassment policies not exist aboard yachts?"

The most sexist behavior I've seen so far on this show is FROM WOMEN.

I am not a smiler.  Never have been.  Except when waitressing or dealing with the public in my job - then it was service with a smile all day long.  I have been "told to smile" on many occasions (although not in my later years - I don't think anyone would dare!), and I can honestly say the majority of those types of comments came from women.  Since I worked in male dominant fields, I found this rather interesting, but not surprising.

Whatever the sentiments are about sourpuss, the Captain seems to have noticed or been told about it, since he makes mention of catering to clients' outrageous demands with a pleasant demeanor in the First Look.

Sexism isn't just from men. As we saw in the episode when the female guests treated Andrew like a cabana boy/eye candy, women perpetrate sexism as well. Doesn't make it ok.

Let's move on from "Smile though your heart is breaking".  The conversation has veered away from being about the episode & into a discussion about personal experiences with smiling & sexism.  If you want  to continue that part of the discussion, please take it to the Small Talk thread.

Kelley is decent, cute even; but Ben & that accent get me every time.  I'd find Ben the most attractive guy on board even without the accent.

Totally agree with you on that.  Ben is the best.  His personality alone gets me.  The accent and his overall cuteness sends me over the edge.  And the women who wanted the cooking lessons seemed ready to jump his bones.

Listen, Kate was mad because she saw those women and was thinking that she should be one of them and being served, thats it.  She's long in the tooth and she knows it.  She knows that as the years go by less of the chance to snag a rich guy.  Also do you guys get the feeling that she may have escorted during her time before this show, she gives off an escort feel to me.

Well her first job sounded shady as fuck. No mention of what the company did or what her job was or what her boss's job was, but a catalogue of all the high end "fuck me " shoes she was given to keep up with the dress code? Yeah that totally sounds like my first job after college too, except for everything Kate said. Maybe she was one of those girls who thought she could escort for a year or two until she snagged a rich man and that didn't work out and she didn't want to go hard core into hooking so she started working on a yacht thinking she would meet a rich guy there and that didn't work out so maybe reality show is plan D or F or something.

Kate was at fault this episode, the guests were very demanding but she chose the work. If I'm paying top dollar for a yachting trip I want the crew to at least act like they enjoy THEIR JOB. I can understand not cracking a smile or being slow to smile if their feeling sick, got bad news, or exhausted after a very long day other than that I'm buying your service and part of that means being amiable not a buzz kill.

Yikes, Andrew's position must have an awful lot of responsibility if the rest of the crew had to work twice as hard to take up his slack.

He has a responsibility to himself and the crew to do his job.

I would imagine it might be twice as hard because you can't count on him doing his job nor doing it correctly. It takes it's toll not only physically but also mentally.  He slacks off and you have to work harder doing or re-doing his tasks on top of your own knowing he's getting an equal share of the tip. You're wondering what else has he screwed up or not done that could put you, your crew members, or the ship at risk.

Andrew doesn't even seem to have the ability to realize the next logical thing to be done, so you have to tell him what to do then walk him through every job and then check that it's been done correctly. EXHAUSTING!

I totally forgot about that shoe thing, your right, something real shady is up with her last job.

Just wanted to thank you for the link. Love the snark and the "inside" info on Adrienne and Kat!

I am many years late to the party. But, I adore Ben's accent. He seems like he could be a love child of John Lennon. Although I don't know his age, so not sure that could be. 😄
