Can you elaborate, please? Mattie was trying to leave why? Did her gym kick her out or did she blame her coach for her floor ex?

Well during the 2010 Worlds prelims Mattie didn't perform very well. Apparently Martha wanted to take her out for Team Finals, but the coaches wanted her in the lineup. Mattie had a meltdown on Floor she left out two required elements and scored 12.533 and the US lost the gold by like .3. After the competition Martha did her interviews and blamed Mattie for loosing the US the gold. I'm sure her coaches were really pissed since I don't think they had brought anyone to worlds before. She had the same coaches as McKayla and from her gymcastic interview they sound like a nightmare. I remember Gabby use to say when she was with Chow that he would tell her it was his fault if she messed up in competition because it meant he didn't do his job preparing her. Unfortunately, I don't think the AOGC coaches had the same philosophy.  This blog post from AuntJoyce (Dave Lease old  blog he is the guy who runs The Skating Lesson) explains why Mattie stayed. http://auntjoycesicecreamstand.blogspot.com/2011/02/martha-great-chess-master.html

I also remember hearing Mattie's dad did the floor music for UCLA women's gymnastic team before Mattie attended not sure if he still does. Also I think her sister was on Baldwin Hills.

I think Laurie is going to have a hard time to make it back to another Olympics due to be injury prone and the other opportunities she may get that will distract her from training.  I would love to see her make at least one Worlds team.  And a lot will depend on who replaces Martha.  Look at what's happening with the Florida recruits now that Rhonda Faehn left the school.

I agree. History is against Laurie. The last youngest team member for the US to repeat was Kerri Strug.  It will most likely be Valeri. I don't see him putting up with the BS that usually comes with comebacks. I remember it was rumored he told Nastia to drop out of 2009 Worlds Selection Camp. I am curious if Valeri will try to fix Aly's bars and if he will have a meltdown over that. I also wonder if Ragan will disappear and reappear in college like Sarah Finnegan. Way to many similarities Martha hyped them both up as juniors, best event beam and both were alternates.

Side note I was watching some of the 2012 National Championships and Olympic Trials I noticed two things. 1) During Gabby's beam routine night one of Nationals Elfi said Gabby was doing so many beam sets in practice.  That Martha told Chow  that Gabby had to slow down. Thought it was interesting because of all the comments Martha made about Gabby not training enough in the last couple years. 2)  Whenever they show Nastia looking upset after her routines they show Gabby smiling. It is interesting four years later it was Gabby's super serious/upset face shown before either Simone or Laurie smiling. I hope history does not repeat itself!

The End of the Perfect 10, a recently published book on the current state of gymnastics, mostly women's, had several ideas and theories that were suggested by interview subjects.  The brain drain of coaches and retired athletes including the Karolyis, Daniela Silvias (now coaching in the US), Ecaterina Szabo (now coaching in France), and Mihai Brestyan (coach of Aly Raisman and Alicia Sacramone), is a factor.  Another factor is the Romanian focus on beam, vault, and floor exercises with poor performances on the uneven bars.  With the old 10.0 scoring system, they could do well enough on the first three to make up for not doing so well on the bars.  It's telling that Raisman and Sacramone, both trained by a Romanian coach, also don't do well on the bars.  The third theory was that Romania's declining birth rate could be a factor.  The women who dominated between 1976 and early 2000s were all born before 1980.  The birth rate has declined since then and emigration has also increased as well.  Because of those two population issues, the talent pool isn't as deep as it was.

The book is a good read for more than the current state of international gymnastics.  The last chapter on NCAA women's gymnastics is excellent and very sobering.  It's sad that someone like Jordyn Wieber can't compete because she turned pro in anticipation of the London games but serves as the UCLA team manager.  My view is that the NCAA is a big fat group of hypocrites by not allowing someone like her to compete in a sport that isn't a money maker at most schools, but turns a blind eye to the benefits that the elite football and basketball players get from boosters.  It's hard to believe that someone like Joey Bosa, formerly of Ohio State, can afford to live in an expensive off campus luxury apartment even though he does come from an affluent family.  Aly Raisman committed to Florida before losing her eligibility by turning pro.

Do you think the reason the US was super weak on bars during the 2009-2012 quad has to do with the influx of Romanian coaches?

Sacramone started gymnastics at age 8 and was scared of bars.  Maybe if she had a coach like Aimee push her to face her fears she could have done better.

Jordyn has said she doesn't regret going pro. I feel worse for a gymnast like Rebecca Bross who gave up her eligibility and never made it to the Olympics. I really hate how Miss Val has used Jordyn as a prop for gymnasts loosing their eligibility. This really bugs me because Miss Val would probably benefit more than any college gymnastic coach if gymnasts who went pro could compete at the NCAA level. She lost Kerri Strug, Jordyn and Simone all 3 would have made her program a lot of money if they hadn't gone pro. Vanessa Atler has said the only college she looked at was UCLA. Alicia was all set on going to UCLA until her success at Worlds 2005 and wanted to try to for 2008 Olympics. She felt it wouldn't be right to leave Mihai.

If any of the Final Five girls want to go for 2020 then they may want to consider how long of a break to take.  I don't think he will be giving chances to returning athletes like Martha did.  Nastia is getting married next year but with her dad in charge I wonder if she'll consider coming out of retirement to train as a bars/beam specialist?

I agree about the Final Five. Who knows about Nastia she knew in 2012 all she needed to do was hit a 16 plus on bars to make the Olympic team and she couldn't pull it together. Did she ever get her shoulder fixed? I really hope she does not come back I thought the fact she showed up at nationals/trials and couldn't even do a full routine was so disrespectful.

Also who would coach her since Valeri can't coach individual athletes? Marchenko or Laurent?

I'm interested to see the strategy for the next quad and how many gynnasts will be discouraged from training the all around.

For the next quad isn't the team going to be focused more on AA gymnasts rather than AA + specialists?

For team yes. For the two specialists positions who knows. They might go with girls like Elizabeth Price who are solid on 4 events or with the built in alternate strategy which is why Gabby was on the team this year. Yet for some reason people keep talking about NCAA gymnasts coming back for a specialist position.

It will be interesting if they build teams with 6 girls like Gabby, Kyla and Elizabeth solid on 4 events with one weak event (but can still score well). Or girls like Madision, Maroney  and Skinner have one great event, can do all 4 events, okay on one, and not team final worthy for two.  Due to Madison and Maroney's injuries if you just want them on one event should they even be training the all around?

I was looking at Olympic placements pretty crazy Gabby was in the top 10 on every event. Not even Simone could accomplishment that.

I wonder if Ballie Key is done with elite.

I also wonder if Kim Zmesksl is going through Martha and Bela withdrawals.

Most interested in seeing how Adams and Jones from Buckeye turn out. Since I don't think Martha was impressed with the coaching. Since Nia was left off pan ams in 2015 and all the digs she made at trials with Gabby. I wonder if both were a fluke thing since I don't fully blame them for Gabby. Maybe it will be different under Valeri's direction.

I'm not surprised that Bailie isn't at camp.  Her goal was Rio and she saw the writing on the wall when she was left off the World team in 2015.  She should just enjoy her senior year and figure out if she still going to Florida or find a new school.  The rumor is that she's looking at Alabama.

I'm surprised that Ragan Smith is not at camp.  I don't think she's part of the tour and then would have given her a chance to try to get a year end international assignment.

2017 is going to be a very interesting year for team usa.

I agree about Ragan Smith hopefully she does not follow the same path as Sarah Finnegan were she disappears until college.

Maybe they gave her the first camp off since she was an alternate for the Olympic team. They usually let World team members miss the next camp.

Ragan is performing tonight/tomorrow at the Kellog's tour stops in Texas per Kim Zmeskal's twitter so that might be why she's not at camp. I think she has been back in full training though so I assume she is aiming for 2017 Worlds.

In other news, the Final Five won best US team of the Olympics (although Simone missed out on best female athlete to Katie Ledecky) http://www.teamusa.org/News/2016/September/28/US-Olympic-Committee-Announces-2016-Winners-For-Team-USA-Awards-Presented-By-Dow-Best-Of-The-Games and they were also at the White House http://www.huffingtonpost.com.au/entry/final-five-white-house_us_57ed5c4fe4b082aad9b9f85d

Unfortunately Gabby has missed out on both events as she had her wisdom teeth removed the other day. Bad timing for her although at least she got to experience it in 2012!

Excerpts from this interview have been published on Tumblr and include some of the following observations:

On Gabby being bullied and criticized during Rio:
“I think in the beginning, we didn’t really realize what was going on, and Gabby is one of those people where she’s very to herself, especially when something’s wrong, she’s pretty quiet about it […] I really realized it after her bar final, when she was done competing then she kinda really opened up to us […] We were really proud of her […] obviously we wouldn’t have been able to win the team gold medal without her amazing bar routine.”
“We’re on tour right now, we’re traveling the country, and when she does anything, even if she like does a cartwheel, the girls in the stands go crazy, your ears feel like they’re gonna explode, because all the little girls love her so much, so we just always tell her to focus on that.”

On body image:
"When I was younger I used to be self-conscious, because I was so strong, and all of the boys in my class would make fun of me that I was too muscular, so that would bother me of course… But then I would also get teased when I was in middle school for looking like I was anorexic because I was just so tiny… I was working out 4 hours a day at the age of 10-11, so obviously no matter how much you eat, I would eat like 3 sandwiches for lunch, the weight just falls right off of you, because you’re working out so much.”

"I kinda realized after high school that you have 2 choices: You can wake up in the morning and look at yourself and pick yourself apart, or you can look at yourself in the mirror and pick out things you like about yourself, so I choose to do that instead of picking myself apart. I try to start off the day with positive thoughts just so I feel good. And also, nobody looks at you the way you look at yourself, we’re always our biggest critic. So if I’m self-conscious about something, I’ll think: "I’m sure nobody else is noticing it”. Even if they do, it makes me feel better.“

On healthy eating:
“In 2012 I really wouldn’t eat any carbs, but in 2016 I ate more carbs than I ever did in my whole life, and I think that was really the reason why I was better than I was in 2012. So I was really happy that the little girls saw me eating that, because I think in our world women think you shouldn’t eat carbs for some reason, like it’s the enemy, but if you pair it around your workouts, it’s what gives you all the energy.”

“When we’re performing, there’s a bunch of kids […] that go out and they do a little dance before we walk out and perform, and they could see me through the window and I was eating a bagel, so I was happy that they actually saw that. […] It was funny, I kinda just held it up so they can see it, so that they know it’s okay to eat that.”

How did she find the time to "write" a book?

Indeed! I can't imagine that there will be much to put in it... at least Simone has had quite a long and decorated career (not to mention quite a different upbringing). Not that these gymnast books ever reveal anything too insightful! They're all very light and fluffy and tailor-made for the teen girl audience. I would love a tell-all from Gabby about her experiences leading up to and at these Olympics but I doubt it will ever happen.

In other news, the final five at the Country Music Awards - http://www.cosmopolitan.com/style-beauty/fashion/a8108489/final-five-2016-cma-awards-red-carpet/

I am loving Gabby and Simone's style. Aly has had some stunning dresses at other events but I'm not really feeling this one.

Gabby and Simone look the best. I wish Gabby had done a bold lip like she was doing for competition, she really rocked those lipcolors. Madison's dress is bordering on prom-style but her makeup looks great and her earrings are cute.

Don't know if you've checked out Jennifer Sey's Chalked Up but it's well worth a read. She was the US National Champion in '86 and gave up the whole show a year later. She trained at Parkette's.

FYI, y'all--I'm going to be at the Kelloggs tour on Sunday! Can't wait :)

Simone, Aly and Gabby, Ashton, Jordyn Weiber, Nastia, Shawn, John Orozco, Donnell Whittenburg, Dannell Leyva and some rhythmic, trampoline and acrobatic gymnasts whose names I didn't recognize. I'm assuming Laurie was off doing DWTS and McKayla and Madison were off at school. Not sure why Ragan wasn't there. It was cheesy good times though :)

Glad you enjoyed it. I've heard that Simone does some pretty incredible tumbling which I think is unusual for these types of events where they water down their routines substantially to prevent injury.

Laurie will also be going on the DWTS tour (not sure when that starts and if she's doing all the stops).  Doesn't sound like she'll be attending the January camp.  I thought for sure she would resume training to get one of the spots for American Cup.

This is getting some international attention as well - an article popped up on the main sports page for me this morning (in Australia)

I don't think that this will go away quietly for USA Gymnastics (and it shouldn't).

In less depressing news, it seems that Aly has a boyfriend - http://www.espn.com/espnw/culture/the-buzz/article/18276459/turns-aly-raisman-colton-underwood-secretly-dating-months

Simone was also voted ESPN's woman of the year.
