I saw a picture of John Legend helping Aly's brother with his tie before the VMA's.

Aw, that's cute!

The girls looked lovely at the VMA's - Aly's dress was particularly stunning on her.

Anyone else find it interesting Gabby's publicist put out the statement and not Natalie? Since she's had this publicist for awhile and it's always Natalie who puts out statements.

I think it would be an excellent idea for Natalie to take a step back and let a professional handle these things - after all, that's why they are paying them! I'm sure Natalie has the best of intentions but it is hard to separate your emotion from any situation when you are so personally invested. Having said that, it could just be that Natalie was preoccupied in this instance if Gabby is as unwell as it sounds. There were reports on twitter that she was re-hospitalised again on Sunday night although that could just be misinformation/confusion as I haven't seen it confirmed anywhere official.

And if Simone is going to make a return to the sport, she may have to either move gyms or get another coach - her long-time coach Aimee Boorman has moved to Florida with her family!

I agree the publicist has been with Gabby since the Chow/Sheryl Shade days I think since her book came out right after the Olympics. I never understood why they didn't use her more.  I hope this means Natalie takes a step back.

Happy for Aimee! I bet this has been in the works since before the Olympics. I always loved the fact Aimee's ego isn't wrapped up in Simone's success. I remember she was asked what she thought of Simone going pro and she goes I don't really care it doesn't change anything in my life.

In less important news Colton Underwood and Shawn's husband were cut by the Raiders. Hopefully Colton Underwood fades to obscurity

Laurie is going to be super busy this fall between the tour and DWTS good for her.

It's official Laurie will be on Dancing with the Stars paired with Val.

Aly and Simone will be on the Ellen show next week.  Not sure if they will appear together.

Probably together. They are both signed  with Octagon (different agents). I saw Octagon tweeted about it.

We should find out who is replacing Martha soon since a National Team Training camp is scheduled for the end of September. My guess is Valeri.

So for those who saw Kenzo Shirai on floor and vault and wanted to see what he's like on other events I found this.

Doesn't have the control quite yet but getting there.

Here's his rings:

Much rougher. His tiny twisting self doesn't have the upper body strength for rings, but still, I could see Kenzo becoming an AA gymnast in 4 years.

Social media numbers for the Final Five (Instagram):

Morning of team final (8/9)

Gabby - 1.2m, Aly - 992K, Simone - 875K, Laurie - 395K, Madison - 216K

As of 9/1:

Simone - 3.1m, Aly - 2.1m, Gabby - 1.8m, Laurie - 1.3m, Madison - 635K

OK, I'm old. With Instagram, do these numbers reflect "likes" or comments on pictures and videos that the women themselves posted, or is it like Twitter, where you can post a comment on whomever you want, even if you aren't looking at their feed?

Gabby apparently was in the hospital for surgery

The medical professional in me is somewhat confused. Gabby said she had a cyst in her mouth that grew "on a bone." Does that mean the cyst was underneath her gums, on her jaw? And there's another statement from a publicist stating that she was in the hospital being treated for complications from a "seriously infected past mouth infection." What the hell?. Maybe the statement from the publicist is written with Millenials in mind, but I have no idea what that even means. I'm not asking Gabby to violate her HIPAA rights and disclose even more of her protected health information, but did she have a cyst? Or did she have an infection? Or an infected cyst?

Bottom line, it must have been really serious. People generally don't have to stay in the hospital overnight after oral surgery.

The numbers reflect how many followers each gymnast have. So when you have an Instagram account you can follow whomever you want and their posts will show up in your newsfeed.

I was confused by the Gabby mouth story too. According to her Instagram account she said she has to get her wisdom teeth out so maybe that's what caused the complications. I remember the dentist told me I should get them out before they started causing me issues.

I'm glad Gabby is on the mend. I feel bad for her that she had to miss out on some of the post-Olympic fun with her team.

Laurie will be throwing out the first pitch at the Mets game on Saturday:

I think Laurie living in the tri state area will be an advantage for her in the long run. Doesn't have to travel far for media comittments. Since the American Cup is in New Jersey again this year I'll be shocked if she isn't competing in it unless she isn't healthy.

I think the hospital stay was because she had an adverse reaction to the painkillers they gave her? Her brother mentioned on instagram that she had reacted really poorly to the meds. Either way, a cyst in your mouth sounds super painful!

Gabby will be on the Late Late Show tonight so hopefully she is all recovered.

IMO still the ultimate gymnast nonpareil , Vera Caslavska has died.

http://www.nytimes.com/2016/09/01/sports/olympics/vera-caslavska-gymnast-soviets-czechoslovakia-dead.html?ref=sports

Only female gymnast to have won Olympic Gold medals in all the individual apparatus, In addition to back to back AA Gold medals in 1964 and 1968.

She will always be remembered by her silent  but eloquent protest of the Russian invasion of her homeland during the 68 Olympics.

RIP Vera.

The tour starts on the 15th (http://www.kelloggstour.com/info/).  The cast: http://www.kelloggstour.com/cast/  Does anyone know who else is on tour?  This list seems to be incomplete!

Madison Kocian has just arrived at UCLA.  I imagine she's only going to appear in the LA and Texas stops.

Simone and Aly are definitely on it I don't see them listed under cast. That is strange since its been rumored they are paying Gabby, Simone and Aly the most money. Also Shawn and Ashton Locklear have been posting discounts on their social media pages. Laurie has also but even though she says she's doing every stop  DWTS is a huge time commitment. It is possible to do both.

Simone is coming out with an auto biography. So I assuming The Simone Biles Story will be airing on Lifetime in the future.

Aly says she's aiming for 2020. I don't think Aly knows what she wants to do after gymnastics ala Kim Zmeskal, Paul Hamm, Blaine Wilson. Whether she makes it on the 2020 team or not I won't be surprised if she continues until her body gives out. Aly has been lucky that she has had no major injuries.

She's healthy (right now) and she's improved since London but I really think she needs to thing long and hard about this plan.  She had started college in the Boston area.  She should resume classes in January or look into finishing elsewhere (say UCLA).   She may now want a World individual gold medal but other than that she's done everything she wanted to do with this comeback and staying until 2020 when there's one less spot on the team is a bit selfish IMO.  And she loves the fame aspect (Gabby too).

I believe Aly was living at home taking classes at Babson. I don't think it's selfish if she can contribute in 4 years she should be on the team. Who knows how the juniors will do or Laurie or Ragan. I agree they all love the fame except for Kyla who looked uncomfortable in every interview appearance in 2012.

Personally I would like some new gymnasts. I also don't see Valeri giving Aly numerous chances like Martha gave to her and the other 2012 girls minus Kyla. Since training elite 7 years straight with almost no breaks is impressive.

I wonder how much of this is sponsor related? I imagine that in terms of attracting (and perhaps even retaining) sponsors, it looks better to still be 'active' as opposed to retired.

I am very intrigued by the new crop of juniors and who will emerge from the pile to contend for 2020. It will be particularly interesting because there is unlikely to be another Simone which will level the playing field, plus the new format of 4 team members and 2 specialists will mix things up and finally Marta won't be in charge and while the system she has established is still in place it is likely that there will be some change/difference.

I agree I'm interested to see what juniors do well. I really like Morgan Hurd. Please don't break! It will be interesting if Valeri is put in charge since he has broken almost every gymnast he has had. Even though he found success with his own daughter. Nastia  was injured for most of '06 and '07. Gabby should be thanking her lucky stars every day WOGA rejected her.

One of the 2000 Olympians has filed a suit against the USA trainer. Reading the complaint they mention the states people lived in. It not very hard to figure out who filed it or who it is against.

I'm not able to read the complaint -- who would it be?  That poor girl.

Re: Aly and 2020.  She certainly wouldn't be the first gymnast to compete in 3 Olympics.  If she's healthy and has something to bring to the team, then I say go for it.  It's the Olympics -- you put the best team together for the best outcome, not put the best team together so long as people get their turn.

Maybe. The information they released fits her year on the national team and  she if from the state they mention.

That's who came to mind because it was filed in California and mentions being on the 1999 worlds gymnastic team.

The 1999 World Team was Jeannette Antolin, Vanessa Atler, Jamie Dantzscher, Kristen Maloney, Elise Ray, Morgan White.  Jamie, Kristen, Elise were on the 2000 team (Tasha replaced Morgan).  Out of the 3 Jamie is the only one from California.  I know Jamie had left the Rybacki's to train at SCATS and that was where Don Peters coached.  I have a feeling more gymnasts will come forward.

I am guessing that the tour members get some type of commission if their code is used to get the discount.    I know Gabby had Miss America the other night but I don't think she's shown up yet for the tour rehearsal.  Laurie was there until Sunday (flew to LA for DWTS) and Simone/Aly are making appearances in NY.  Ashton is also on snapchat and she's posted them shopping, going out to lunch etc.

The scandal of the day are the Russian hackers who hacked into WADA and released info on Simone and the Williams sisters.  http://www.bbc.com/news/world-37352326

Poor Simone (and the other athletes impacted). I work in the health industry and breaching patient confidentiality is an incredibly serious issue. I'm not quite sure what the hackers were aiming to achieve (presumably just to smear other high performing athletes to take the focus of their own), but they've made themselves look rather stupid since all the medications listed had gone through the appropriate approvals process.

I'm also pretty suspicious that the athletes targeted so far are all women who are either black or gay. Looks like a certain agenda is being pushed.

I didn't watch it but apparently Aly Raisman and Simone Biles were guest stars on Lip Sync Battle this week. And Laurie-mania is about to really take off based on my brief glimpse of social media Monday night!

After week 1 everyone is placing their bets on Laurie to win the whole thing.  Jimmy Kimmel has also predicted her to win this season.  I just hope that with the tour/show running until November that her parents/coach allow her to take December off before she starts preparing for the new season.  With the American Cup in New Jersey again they are going to want Laurie there!

It will be interesting to see how Maggie does as a coach the next four years her gym has done very well the last couple years at the Junior National Championships. It will be interesting to see besides Laurie if any of her gymnasts have success at the elite level. I'm sure a lot of parents want there gymnast to train at MG Elite. I can't remember the last time a female gymnast went to the Olympics from the tri state area. I know in the past Maggie has said they have kept the team very exclusive due to the gym being on the smaller side because of how expensive real estate is.

I'm shocked, let me tell you, shocked, that in a sport where American parents and guardians sign their daughters up for classes at age 4-8 in it because they were always 'bouncing off the walls' that one of the big players is diagnosed ADHD and has a TUE for medicine for that.

As for Serena, she has some serious health issues- the blood clots she's had can kill, even if you aren't in a career with heavy plane travel, and if there's a case for TUE for life-saving medications that still allow an athlete to compete, it's her.

Apparently, Michael Phelps also has ADHD (he and his mother are open about his diagnosis), which is one of the reasons he started swimming at a young age. He says it helps him focus.

So what does a gym do once one of it's gymnasts makes the National team and possibly the Olympic team? If there's too much interest, I'd imagine the gym would have to start turning people away. How does a gym owner make those decisions?

I guess it would depend if they are interested in elite or rec gym.

Since Rec gym is how most gyms make money that shouldn't be a huge issue I read an article about the gym the Biles own and they have tripled their enrollment and have a waiting list since the Olympics. Here is a good article Simone's Brother who manages the gym is quoted http://m.ctpost.com/news/texas/article/Students-flock-to-Texas-gym-run-by-family-of-9179609.php

I think if you want to be elite it is stricter. I've read stuff with WOGA where you have to try out. If you are already on the national there were rumors that Martha pretty much dictated gym changes which is why no gym would accept Mattie Larson after the 2010 worlds debacle. While Gabby was able to switch to Chow's in the same timeframe (it was rumored that Martha and Kathy Kelly were behind her leaving Excalibur even though they have publicly denied it).

Even though there are gymnasts like Simone, Jordyn, Laurie and Shawn who are with the same coach there whole career. A lot of gymnasts like Kyla and Aly will start off at smaller gyms and then move to one that coaches elite.

Can you elaborate, please? Mattie was trying to leave why? Did her gym kick her out or did she blame her coach for her floor ex?

Also--I read somewhere a mention of Mattie's "famous" grandfather and something connected to TV. Is he actually Glenn Larson (produced/created the original Battlestar Galactica and the Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew series, as well as others). If so what a random coincidence!

I think Laurie is going to have a hard time to make it back to another Olympics due to be injury prone and the other opportunities she may get that will distract her from training.  I would love to see her make at least one Worlds team.  And a lot will depend on who replaces Martha.  Look at what's happening with the Florida recruits now that Rhonda Faehn left the school.
