Past Winners: Wanna Be on Top? Too Bad.

Recommended Posts

IMHO,

Top 3 best winners: C15 Ann, C11 Mckey, C18 Sophie. I know they are not necessarily the most successful but they are the most modelesque of all the winners.

Top 3 worst winners: C10 Whitney, C9 Saleisha, C4 Naima. Enough said.

I just cannot stand McKey.  I have a visceral reaction to her face.  That huge mouth with rubbery lips - ugh!  It reminds me of how Dick Cheney is portrayed in caricature.  They talked constantly about how beautiful she was, and that proves beauty is subjective.

So happy Britt returned to modelling.

I really liked her.  She was a little catty and immature, but she had reasons for her issues.  It was so sad that her mother couldn't get over herself to show up to support her.  I thought the little pixie cut she got in the finale was amazing.

Jaslene behind-the-scenes of shoot for July issue of Today's Chicago Woman:  01 02 03

Jaslene was one I could not abide.  Her voice made my hair stand on end - I still mock it today.

My most hated winner - by far - is Lisa.  Her personality, her voice, her face.  I can't forget her drunken moments, her peeing in a diaper, etc.  She looks like a hag.

I didn't like Laura, but it may have been more related to her poor little rich girl whining.

My favorites (I'm unable to separate personality from modeling ability):  Adrianne, Caridee, Short Nicole, and Yoanna.  Not necessarily in that order.

I'll always have a warm spot for McKey.  I get some people made cracks about her reminding them of The Joker but compared to Whitney, who will always be my least favorite winner, McKey was golden.  I especially liked that she along with Analeigh were cool with Isis.

I also like Jaslene.  Pretty much because she was serious about modeling which hasn't always been the case with the winners.  As for her voice, she like C6 Danielle, have had voice/diction lessons and sound completely different now than when they were on the show.

I don't count Lisa's win even though I have nothing against her.

Has Laura from the college cycle done anything since her win? I think she is the least successful winner ever! At least Saleisha was in the online "Days of our lives" and Whitney started a online dating website for plus-sized women.

Lisa is my favorite winner, in large part because she seemed to be one of the few hamsters who understood the show for what it was. I loved when she told Nigel during a shoot for All Stars that she was afraid to take one bad photo because she suspected it would be the one selected for judging. She was also on The Tyra Show  years ago and said that she knew a black girl wouldn't win Cycle 5 because of racial politics (there had already been two African American winners in a row). Tyra was pissed, the crowd applauded, and it was glorious. She can also take fantastic photos.

I also like Ann, Yoanna, the Nicoles, and Danielle. I admire the success Jaslene and Brittani have enjoyed post-ANTM, but their personalities on their respective cycles turned me off to them.

I think Laura is pretty, but what I remembered from her Cycle is that she was too tan to model. Or, at least, to model high fashion.

Seems like Paragon Mexico signs every ex-ANTM hamster, including Ann, Yoanna, Jaslene, Laura, Molly, Nina, and now Nicole. Maybe that's where ANTM careers get put out to pasture after they are dropped from whatever big agency (IMG, Next, Elite, Ford) that they originally signed with.

Actually, the girls can build up decent portfolios with Paragon.  Erin is currently doing some nice work with them.  Ann seems to have dropped off the planet though and haven't seen anything from Molly.  Hopefully, Nicole will be different.

I saw that story about Angelea but I was running late and could not post anything. So since she was supposed to be the winner, we can talk about it here I guess. I don't know what I thought could be the reason but I didn't expect that!

I thought she worked at a bank (bitch!). It's good she can multitask.

I worked at a bank for almost four years. I can't imagine any bank hiring her. Not with her attitude.

An escort? I find that interesting too. I can't see her being an appealing escort either. Sometimes she looks a little long in the tooth. Like Dominique.

Escorts generally are older to begin with. The functional difference between a high end escort and a prostitute(besides that escorts have legal gray areas they work in that means  it generally isn't illegal) is that a escort is expected to be able to hold up their side of a date/conversation/not make a embarrassment of themselves at a party. Having worked some jobs in clubs/hotels that exposed me to a lot of escorts and Angelea's brand of stank attitude and pretty-but-gaudy(verging on fishy drag queen) looks fit right in. A lot of the guys who buy time with escorts want a bitchy girl from what I gathered.

I wonder when Angelea worked as an escort. Perhaps she needed money before her C12 days when she slept at Port Authority. Also could be she did escorting after she appeared in C14 and leveraged her ANTM "fame" to get more escorting jobs. I guess the latter would get her disqualified if she used the show's name in any way to attract potential clients.

I have no issue with a woman choosing to be an escort or a prostitute. When I lived in Las Vegas, I saw plenty of them. More power to her.

I'm focused more on her attitude. And her anger management problem. I see shades of her in the recently kicked off Romeo.

I think if I were a man looking for an escort, she wouldn't grab me in any way. Something about her seems off.

She does look older than she should, but I imagine that's due to hard living. It doesn't seem like she's had it easy.

Tyra likes to exploit those kinds of contestants.

Indeed she does, but in a very judgmental way.   Cycle 5 alum and All-Stars winner Lisa is a prime example.  Throughout both of her cycles, she was portrayed as a hardened wild child with a drinking problem (more so in C5 than in All Stars), and she was cast in a negative light.  Once predetermined winner Angelea was disqualified, and Tyra had to choose between runners-up Lisa and Allison (it's obvious she would have chosen Laura if she hadn't been cut before the final 3!).  Lisa's whole storyline shifted from being a party girl to being a strong woman who had overcome addiction and obstacles in her life (which was incongruent with the editing earlier in the season), in an attempt to justify her win and make her fit the mold of Tyra's winner.  More canonical winners of the show tend to be girls with sob stories, and Tyra is the literal deus ex machina who elevates them above their circumstances (see: C1 winner Adrienne and C6 winner Danielle's "poor" backgrounds; C2 winner Yoanna's weight loss and body image issues, C7 Caridee's psoriasis; every minority winner's ethnicity, etc.).

But interestingly, there seem to be some glaring exceptions to the sob stories that Tyra finds acceptable for winners vs. non-winners.  Unless I'm recalling incorrectly, Tyra has never awarded the title to a contestant who, at the time of filming, was married, had a child (whether she was with the child/children's father or a single mom), had a criminal record, or was an out LGBTQ person (I think it's been rumored that past winners like Eva and Adrienne are bi, and I remember reading that C5 runner-up Nik was gay but wasn't out on the show, but generally the openly gay/bi/trans contestants have seldom made the top 2/3).  IIRC, C20's Jourdan was the first divorcee to win; I wonder if she would have won had she still been married!

I personally tend to think that Tyra not awarding the title to any contestant who is married or has kids is probably jealously on her part, since Tyra herself has never been married or had kids of her own.

I think Jourdan was the first divorcee. I think it's possible Tyra might be jealous, but I'm not sure that's the only reason or the main reason.

I've been interested in the fashion and modeling industries for a long time. From my observation, it seems as though models tend to marry and have children later in their lives after they've achieved some level of success and fame.

Models start out young and when they're new faces, they'll do the editorial circuit, in order to nab the advertisement and endorsement deals because that's where the real money is.

I'm guessing the reason we don't hear of young married models with children is because few, if any, exist. The lifestyle (traveling at a moment's notice, etc.) wouldn't be conducive to family life.

That said few of the ANTM contestants are model material. At least, not for high fashion. They're too old to break into that niche. However, they can have lucrative careers in commercial modeling and they wouldn't have to travel as often and therefore, it's more conducive to family life.

Maybe Tyra is still of that "models don't get married and have children until later" mindset? That was pretty much the case for her and her model peers.

Sorry I'm trying to use Tyra-logic to respond to your post. ;)  You have valid points about when and how Tyra uses contestants' backstories to suit her purposes.
