Ol' Lightbulb Head Herself: Tyra Banks

Recommended Posts

I just saw the Sesame Street thing with my son and came straight here. I swear when she said something about singing A to Z, I thought at first she said something about singing H to T.

It was weird.

Ah, Tyrant.

I wonder about her these days, now that Naomi Campell has hedged into her TV-space so much (especially since Naomi conspires to make sure she appears in EVERY version of her show).

You know, as nuts as she seems to be, our girl Tyra has one talent that I wish we saw more often (and, better yet, chose to focus on instead of all the silliness): her photography.

As exhausting and crazy as Dream-Maker Tyra is, I've always been impressed when Photographer Tyra shows up. She connects with the models in interesting ways (bringing out something lovely with virtually everyone). Her beauty shots are wonderful, her non-beauty shoots can be quite interesting, and the finished products usually are really good, if not some of the best of each season.

She really missed her calling, in my mind. Could have been a great - or at least highly credible - fashion photographer if she'd chosen to focus on that.

From TVLine:

Here’s something to smize about: Tyra Banks is bringing her brand of fierce back to daytime.

The America’s Next Top Model maven will launch a new syndicated lifetime talk show for Disney-ABC in 2015, the network announced Friday.

The untitled show will feature a team of lifestyle experts, led by Banks, tackling everything from fashion and beauty to home and entertaining to empowerment and individual enterprise.

The model-turned-TV producer’s previous talker, The Tyra Banks Show, ran for five seasons.

I've been convinced to watch Cycle 20 this week, and I have to say, Tyra is kind of likeable! She's lost that crazy, over-the-top thing she had in Cycles 7-8, and the mean, rude thing she had in Cycle 10. She seems now like she's as close to an actual person as can be.

I agree. I don't mind Photographer Tyra. She's far more tolerable. Otherwise, she gets on my nerves.

I think there's a middle ground.  Tyra's actual photography is okay, if not spectacular.  But although I forget the job title, isn't there an actual name for the person who directs the models during a shoot (versus takes the pictures)?  Whatever that job is, Tyra ain't bad at it.  Admittedly if its a small photo shoot the photographer will be doing it all him or herself, but in a larger one there's that other person.

Isn't that what Jay does on the shoots?  Is he called the director of the photo shoot or something like that?

Does he even work for the show anymore?

Link to comment

Yes, he did but it never made sense to me.  You have folks who are stylists or creative directors but it doesn't necessarily mean they are running the shoots per se.  What Tyra had Jay doing was some combination of things that wasn't all that helpful.  She would give him the ideas for the shoots and he would be responsible for coordinating that.

Most of the other shows of this type let the photographer take the lead in instructing the girls after say the client has briefed them on what they want.  The mothership doesn't behave this way which is why it's usually a mess.

I think that person is referred to as the art director. That's what Jay Manuel called himself on the show.

Though really, that was stretching it because he mainly gave advice before or after the shoot but not really during it.  At least nothing that was helpful.  Bottom-line, the foreign NTM's are better when it comes to actually instructing the models during photoshoots.  Not all of them, all of the time but still better than the mothership.

And then there's this. T o use my own made up word Tyra hasn't used yet, this is Tyconic. https://www.youtube....h?v=pAY8nEGVCSA

To quote Shannon, "Oh, my word!"  Did Tyra really use beautytainment and beautytainers to sell her cosmetics line?  That video was so wrong and she's going to pull that Harvard thing out until she breathes her last, isn't she?

I think the folks at Jezebel put it best:  Tyra Banks Launches Cosmetics Line, Still Insists She Went to Harvard

No matter what people say about her, Tyra has the ability to spread herself well in many areas.

Her stuff looks good, just not my type. I'm not a huge makeup person myself, though I do have a gorgeous NARS compact I use for my eyes...

She gave herself a Ty-over, and of course it wasn't the Tootie, the peed-on-snow blonde with matching bleached eyebrows, the Mai Farrow in "Rosemary's baby", or the glued-on beard. Actually she doesn't look half bad with the pixie cut as she looks more high fushiuon now than just "pretty girl at the mall" eating ribs in the food court.

Because the first time didn't teach her anything, Tyra is back at it again with a new talkshow:  Tyra Banks’ ‘The FABLife’ To Debut This Fall

...International Design Times reports will include Yahoo Style Editor-in-Chief Joe Zee and interior designer Lauren Makk. Banks will reportedly make room for YouTubers and internet tastemakers. Banks’ show will also feature Sports Illustrated swimsuit model and wife of R&B singer John Legend Chrissy Teigen. Teigen, who also appears on Spike’s Lip Sync Battle, will serve as a social media specialist.

The show premieres in Sep.

Sometimes Tyra bugs the living hell out of me, especially on ANTM. If you have HULU and watch the earlier seasons she was really involved with the show and photoshoots and then after she kind of dropped it all and mostly left Jay and Mr. Jay to handle the girls. It just always seemed that the show was looking for America's Next Tyra Banks.

Everytime there's a photographer we gotta hear how they shot with Tyra and everytime a girl has a sad story, Tyra has to put the focus back on herself. I remember Michelle from S4 when she had impetigo and Tyra talked about how she had warts removed, and she did a lot of that. I know she's trying to come off trying to relate to the other girls but it came off narcissistic.

I will never forget when Tyra fainted on S6 and Furonda said Tyra was a good actress. LMAO, no she isn't. I asked myself how much did Tyra pay Furonda to say that.

Speaking of her many talents, does anyone know if there is a Modelland sequel in the works? I vaguely remember Tyra planning it to be a trilogy, but I don't know if it's actually happening, and a cursory Google search yielded no answers.

‘America’s Next Top Model’ may be ending soon, says Tyra Banks

“‘America’s Next Top Model’ was the first fashion-based competition reality show and then we had these other copycats come and there’s been about 12 or 13 copycats in America. Every time there was a copycat we would try to get better and better,” says Banks, adding, “but we may be coming to an end soon. We shall see. It’s only so long that the show can last.”

“It’s nice to walk away from something before it walks away from you … leave when people remember you at your height.”

Too late...

Tyra Banks on Her Daytime Return: I Thought I Was Done With Talk

Banks said she would receive calls from ABC occasionally, but it wasn't until Lisa Hackner joined ABC as evp daytime and syndicated programming that Banks took a meeting. The two had a relationship from when Hackner worked for Telepictures Productions, which produced The Tyra Banks Show. "In that meeting, it was everything I have ever dreamed of," Banks said. "She pulled me back in."

However, Banks knew that she didn't want to do The Tyra Banks Show 2.0. In addition to Banks, who also serves as an executive producer, FABLife features a diverse panel of lifestyle experts including model Chrissy Teigen, fashion editor Joe Zee, interior designer Lauren Makk and YouTube star Leah Ashley.

FABLife premieres on Sept. 14 at 9 a.m. on ABC.

Wow Tyra is such an astute businesswoman and entrepreneur. She is really going far now that she has her Harvard business school degree. Naomi Campbell better watch her weave.

Tyra Banks Cast in black-ish Season 2

Banks will play a version of herself as Dre’s best friend, series creator Kenya Barris says, in a story based on his own longstanding, real-life friendship with the fashionista.

“I give my wife a lot of credit; I grew up with [banks], but my wife came into a situation where my best friend from 4 years old is a supermodel,” he adds, laughing. “She’s a very good sport.”

The comedy returns Wednesday, Sept. 23, at 9:30/8:30c. Look for Banks to make her black-ish debut around the middle of the season.

Expect Tyra to promote this during her daytime FABLife show.

Daytime Shocker: Tyra Banks Exiting Her Freshman Talk Show FABLife

“This is a very difficult decision, but necessary,” said Banks, in a statement to THR. “I will be devoting more time to my new, growing cosmetics company, TYRA Beauty, which is expanding faster than anticipated, as well as overseeing my company’s other entertainment ventures.”

Banks’ EP duties will end in December, and at present, no plans for a replacement host have been announced.

I don't know, I've merely passed by this show a couple times and noticed that Tyra wasn't there but whatever.  There's a rumor that Tiegen is more popular and that might be more the reason why.

Christie Teigen is much younger, prettier and likeable as a TV personality than Tyra ever was, so it is not surprising she is more popular. Poor TyTy, to be booted off her own show! Hopefully she goes back to Harvard and gets an actual degree.

You mean someone is more popular that Tyra on her own show? Not really shocking to me cause on ANTM I was more a fan of Janice, Nigel, and Ms. Jay. I don't watch FabLife or whatever and I hear that ratings are just bad. Was Tyra making up words on her new show before she got the boot?

Tyra's greatest offense on ANTM was her treatment of C10 Katarzyna. Just look:

Does the video lie? Tyra, the judges, the guests, Mr. J, Jaslene, Fatima just said her name all wrong. It seemed like everyone had it out for her since Day 1. Katarzyna took it in stride especially when they called her Neutrogena, because I would have lost it at the failed attempts at saying my name correctly no matter the 50 damn times I told you how to say it correctly. I didn't get the "too sexy" edit because Kat wore her hair out and all of a sudden she's too sexy, then when she puts it in bun, Tyra has a problem with that. Katarzyna never gave the impression that she was too sex

What also bugs me about her is that during the show she expected the girls to shoot commercials in Japanese, Italian, British accent, etc. and holds them to very high standards when it comes to those commercials but she can't even pronounce Katarzyna's name right and dismissed Kat when Kat tried correcting her again.

According to E!Online, Tyra and Eric have a baby boy thanks to IVF and a surrogate. Now calling it quits on both ANTM and Fab Life starts to make a wee bit of sense. Although once the novelty wears off and she's hired an army of nannies I expect to see her back on my tv in some way, shape or form, a la Kathy Lee Gifford and Kelly Ripa.

^^ugh, so torn, I love Celebrity Apprentice, but Tyra Banks and Jessica Alba annoy me, and I suspect Arnold S. will be trying too hard.  Why did Trump have to go insane?  Or why did he have to show it to the world?  No matter how much I dislike him, he was a great host for that show :(

What the hell was FABlife?  That sounds like a YouTube channel.  Speaking of which, whatever happened to Tyra's pyramid scheme?
