The show has gotten better as it's gone on. The Cold Open....well it was different, I guess. Felt like there was a lot more they could had done with it. As a big Nicolle Wallace fan, her response on Monday will probably be better than the sketch. I didn't care for the Bratz Sketch, but everything after it has been really good. The Theater sketch was great (was there a dig at Jesse Williams here?) and Steve Martin always makes everything better.

The theater sketch was totally cracking me up until the non-ending. Might have been a classic with a good ending.

I thought that Selena was doing Cecily's Gemma accent and that Cecily would ask "Who talks like that?"

Sarah Sherman's update segment had me rolling. I especially loved the "I'm the real King of Staten Island" sticky.

Still don't love Kyle's Baby Yoda, though. Weird that they did this one after the clip with Lizzo as Groot leaked.

I really liked A Peek at Pico.

The Johnny/Amber cold open was so stupid and unnecessary.  It wasn't funny!  It was so weird.

There was a lot to like about this episode.  The weird play, Baby Yoda.  The rap song about cheating.  Sarah Sherman.

I did not get Bratz whatsoever and I guess I'm not the right audience.  What the hell was the modelling sketch?  That was like anti-comedy.

It felt like they just wanted to do something different for the cold open. I agree it didn't work.

It felt like Mikey Day and/or Chris Redd were in everything tonight.

Cold Open: Yeah, let's face it, the Depp vs Heard defamation trial is something LIGHT, especially with recent tragic news (like in Buffalo...). Kenan was the best choice to find someone pooped the bed. Kyle was great as Johnny Depp.

Monologue: Yes, Selena Gomez is just the latest child star to be on SNL. She does do a good Miley Cyrus impression. OF COURSE Kyle volunteers himself when Selena mentions she's single.

Bratz: I love that Bowen is one of the Bratz dolls. "We're competitive about...sports...and girls..." This was a bit early in the night for a sketch as weird and listless as this one.

Old Enough - Long Term Boyfriend: As a 35 year old man lost in the world, I feel like my mom wrote this sketch. Good concept, though.

A Peek at Pico: I didn't know what to make of this sketch. Fun accents, I guess?

A Storm Within: A play where everyone rehearsed in haste and no one remembers lines. This honestly felt like a long form improv that turned into a sketch for how flighty is was.

American Inventors: Steve Martin is here to save the day! Being the inventor of the whoopie cushion was perfect. I don't know why Aidy being struck by lightning multiple times made me laugh so hard, but it did.

WU: The "Bit o'coin" joke was so stupid but I laughed. Same with the Barbie joke. I'm also surprised they got away with "Pussy is on the way."

Sarah's bit was great. I bet she put that bottle of Goldschlager in Colin's dressing room, too.

The Three Daughters: I appreciate it when a sketch character is self-aware for once. The Prince KNOWS that there were gonna be three daughters, and one of them was gonna be weird. He's watched his share of Lawrence Welk sketches. Kate having a literal bubble butt was the last thing I was expecting.

Shoulder Devil: Punkie gets a song! And it was fun. I liked Post Malone's bit, and let's face it, it would've been Pete if he was here.

Guidance Counselors: Yeah, guidance counselors are useless. All they do is urge you to go into modeling. Not much going on in this one.

Twins: Now THIS was a 5 to 1. Bowen and Sarah did make good, weird baby twins, though. Post Malone randomly showing up was great.

Wasn't really feeling this one. Natasha Lyonne closes us out next week!

Omg that was FLEET FOXES?  Is that what Selena said?  I'm going back to watch.  That is the craziest idea for a collaboration!

Great 11:50 sketch and funny Update (I liked the Sarah shtick)….. but, was that the worst host acting….E V E R??? At first I thought it was the weird tone of voice and inability to read cue cards, but it was just awful acting

I loved Che's inside joke about having to go "Un-Quit" in Lorne's office. I think that probably actually happened recently.

This show did kinda run out of steam.

I got approximately four seconds of the Goodbyes. I guess they were really pushing it on time.

pretty meh episode IMO. Even WU wasn't as good as usual. Did love Sarah's backstage tour though. The pretaped bits were good, SG just wasn't all the great in the live part.

I laughed a lot at Weekend Update as well as the play, talk show & baby twins sketches. I also really enjoyed the pre taped clips, especially the one with Steve Martin & Aidy Bryant. The rest wasn't as good, but the only dud for me was the guidance counselor/model sketch. Selena was pretty good, although I do wish the writers would have given a little more of the comedy heavy lifting.

Even though he messed up his one line I could definitely see Post Malone hosting in the future. I wouldn't disapprove.

Yes! “Mitch McConnell, seen here looking like he’s watching _______” and it’s always funny!

This was a really hit-or-miss episode for me. I didn’t like the cold open. I don’t think DV or DV court cases are funny and dislike how the case has turned into entertainment. However, I laughed plenty through out the episode, especially in the Old Enough skit.

The other two times Sarah did those Colin Jost Weekend Update “hit pieces,” I never liked them quite as much as the audience seemed to, but she did win me over with it tonight.  Having an affirmation that Colin is “The real king of Staten Island” on his dressing room mirror was really funny.

That Aidy Bryant/ Steve Martin sketch was pretty funny.  I at first thought it would be a one-note fart joke, but the way Steve said that Aidy was “the most viciously unlucky person he had ever met” (or something like that) really spun it off in a fun and absurd direction.

I found Selena’s flat affect kind of painful.  I didn’t think she was very good here.  I do agree that the show overall got better as it went on.

I feel the same.

I never knew much about Selena before I started watching her pandemic cooking show "Selena + Chef" on HBO.  I really like that show.  I've seen most of it, I think.  So maybe I'm really used to her 'affect' because she didn't bother me as a host one bit.

While the humour of Sarah picking on Colin is funny, there is a bit of real weirdness to it, almost like a grade school obsession.  I guess I gotta remind myself that it's apparently fiction.  I guess when Leslie was always obsessing over him, we didn't know much about his love life, so I never thought about it.

Really, really hated the cold open sketch. There was a joke about the same topic in last week’s WU, but the judge in the UK trial found that claim to not be credible. Domestic violence is horrible and traumatizing, and JD is dragging out the ugliness with now his second lawsuit about it.

It was not a great episode for relationships, with the divorcing parents, the woman dating a guy who’s suffering from failure to launch, and the couple who each think the other is cheating. (That said, I’d kinda love it if Selena came out of this week dating Punkie.)

Steve&Aidy were the definite standouts.

Dammit, I want to know what was going on in Pico Park.

Colin’s Mad Max description of current times was spot on.

Was Alex Moffat in anything this week?

Her voice worked for the Peek at Pico sketch, but, yes, it was bugging me a lot of the time. I liked her in Only Murders in the Building as well as that Disney Wizards show, so I was expecting more from her here.

I haven't watched any of the Depp/Heard trial, so I can't say how much Kyle's impression was accurate, but I didn't like it. I didn't like the CO either.

The monologue was ok. I was amused by Kyle and "Jeff" saying they'd be with Selena and then her reminding them they're married.

I'm not up to date on Bratz -- Are they still a thing? -- so I was wondering if they really have a theme song. I was surprised that Selena wasn't funnier in this.

Old Enough was great. I had watched the first ep of the Japanese show.

I liked A Peek at Pico. I thought the characters were pretty good, though it wasn't really that funny.

The theater sketch was good.

Yay for Steve Martin! Aidy was also excellent.

I have a hard time NOT seeing Chuckie when I see Sarah. At times she also reminded me of Billie Jean King. Must be the hair.

I wish I liked The Three Princesses more. It was a pretty good idea. My favorite part:
Mikey: Ooo, what happens at midnight?
Kenan: It's just so late.

I kind of liked the He By that Bitch House sketch.

The high school counselors sketch was bad. Why would counselors tell students to be models? It made no sense. I got the feeling Selena had said she's good at looking like a model, or something like that, so the writers worked it into a sketch. No bueno.

The last sketch with the babies was a bit aimless.

I FF thru Post Malone's performances.

This was the first time I've heard Selena's speaking voice and I don't think I could stand hearing her nasal voice every day.  Does she have a sinus condition or something?  I had the urge to blow my nose or clear my throat several times just hearing her.  Otherwise I found she did just okay in the sketches.

Sarah Sherman is usually just annoying for me, but I liked the backstage tour and the jabs at Colin.  Of course the best part was when she dropped what she was supposed to hold up and powered through because flubs are part of the appeal of live TV.  I couldn't understand what she or Colin were saying, though, so I still don't know what the joke was.

I think the Baby Yoda bit is pretty much past its "best before" date so they can retire it for good, I think.

I feel that they missed a fantastic opportunity to have Post Malone pop up on the Dionne Warwick Show.

He was on Jimmy Fallon this week, he seems like a fun guy.

I did crack up at the Peek at Pico bit. I work at a library, and those girls come in after school.

The jealous girlfriend skit was pretty funny to me. Selena seemed the most engaged and expressive in this one, and we got Punkie! The song from this one and the Chuck E Cheese ones were total bops.

Was it supposed to be a nude photo of her?  That was so weird.  I almost wondered if she dropped it on purpose.

I didn't like much of anything about this episode.

Yeah, Selena does have a very flat and unattractive speaking voice, in my opinion.

I like Post Malone but I would have preferred another of his songs to this one.

The only thing I liked at all was the last bit with the twins, but even that was not great.

Hopefully, next week will be better.

I was so disappointed when Kyle showed up as Depp, does Aristotle not have a Johnny Depp impression?
Selena seems to have a very small mouth, maybe that factors into the way she speaks. She sings well though, she has a duet out with Coldplay that’s really lovely.

I disagree. Wasn’t she supposed to be angry about the idea of her BF cheating? Because there was no (or very little) anger in her voice or expression. Maybe she’s good in Only Murders but here I was disappointed in her flat affect and acting skills.

Good question. As I said, I haven't seen any of the trial, but I assume from Kyle's impression that Depp did a lot of smiling or smirking. Smirking is definitely in Kyle's wheelhouse. I can't speak to Aristotle's style since we've seen so little of him. That's not how Angelo is, and I don't recall any of his other appearances having that vibe. However, I can imagine Aristotle looking more like Depp than does Kyle.

I really liked this one. I thought Selena was funny and the cast looked like they were having fun.

excepy for poor Aristotle who as usual got absolutely nothing to do. I really feel bad for the guy. Lauren who was cut last year had more screentime than him.

I don't know what has inspired Selena to be so flat, but it is painful. I remember her from her Disney show, and she didn't speak like that. A few months ago she was doing a radio voice over for some radio awards or show or something, I don't quite remember, but every time I heard it, all I could think was she was being held hostage and had to record the promo to be released. She just sounded so lifeless and like she was being bothered to have to promote it. But after seeing her on SNL, I guess this is her new affect? It's not good.

Indeed!

It might just be me (I'm really tired), but I found this episode to be low energy and mostly boring.

I love that they featured "Nicole Wallace" though-- so unexpected! It was brief, but what I love about it is that she's one of the less outrageous characters on the landscape, so seeing her as a subject in an SNL sketch was just inherently funny and kind of a lovable shout out to sanity in an insane time.

I just wish Kate had actually tried even a little. Nicolle is actually funny and has some quirks that they could have used. (It would had been hysterical if they had someone play John Heileman just to say "Hiiiii Nicolle!!!!" Yes, that's a whole thing.)

Selena seems to have a very small mouth, maybe that factors into the way she speaks. She sings well though, she has a duet out with Coldplay that’s really lovely.

Apparently Aristotle was in the cold open and then cut before the live show - he was to have been another of the cleaners. Selena also originally played Aidy's role.

I've never seen anything like what they are doing with Aristotle. The three most recent people to be fired (Jon Rudnitsky, Lauren Holt and Luke Null) still appeared even when they got no focus.  I have to go back to the Brooks Whelan/John Milhiser/Noel Wells/Mike O'Brien firings, and I am sure even they had more airtime...and unlike all of these people, Aristotle was seemingly well-received by fans (on social media, anyway).

Three men were out this week (Pete...doing Pete things, Andrew due to COVID, Alex I am guessing due to the same), and Aristotle still  had no appearances.

Barring a miraculous turnaround, I can only imagine we're going to hear some very interesting stories about just what went down this season.

I haven't seen that Murders show, but I've read she is there to react to Martin Short and Steve Martin doing comedy. I wonder if the show assumed they would be more available this week than they were (I am not criticizing them -  with COVID directly affecting the show yet again,  they were better off not being around).

Selena was so deadpan,  clearly the usual choices they would have  made (like her  singing with half the female  cast about watching The Dropout) were out. Once we got past the cold open (I  know SNL likely feels they "have" to  cover the Depp-Heard trial for those articles/Youtube hits, but I very much wish they had not bothered) and how half-written several sketches felt, her more cool and off-kilter energy added a different flavor to the show, and overall I was fine with the episode. I just wish it had had a less  somber atmosphere. However, I will put some of that down to COVID.

I was also distracted wondering if one sketch or another meant a cast member was leaving.

I just feel they haven’t given Aristotle a chance at all. He looked down during the goodbyes. Maybe he doesn’t fit in with the cast? There’s a number of small parts he could have played in the episode but they’ll have some actors in a million scenes and give him nothing. It was the same for Lauren although to a lesser degree. It must be so stressful working there.

She was pretty flat throughout.  However, I feel that in this particular skit, she wasn't going for enraged as much as bewildered by what her own mind was telling her, and her own over the top reactions. Her cheerful "OK!" to Punkie's destructive suggestions cracked me up. She actually seemed to be having fun here.

That's really unfortunate with Aristotle. You wonder why decisions like that get made. And we know it's not the first time that's happened. Wasn't he also cut from another Cold Open as Dr. Oz just a few weeks ago?

And I think that this week there was not a clear-cut political sketch they needed unless they wanted to do another one on abortion, which they weren't inclined to as they used their best ideas on that last week.

Sometimes I think it boils down to how well and unrelenting they are in writing and pushing their own material. And finding that connection or vibe with one or two of the writers who are going to help them push. Just look at Sarah Sherman's tweet someone posted of her thanking the writers who helped with her bit.  Sometimes it reminds me a little bit of Survivor. You gotta make certain connections and keep fighting.

Indeed. It's widely acknowledged as such. I use to see old castmembers not so fondly refer to the set as "The Bunker."
