We speculated on this forum that Bruce would meet with misfortune in Vietnam.  I didn't expect to hear about it in this episode.  I wonder if this means they will be bringing him back as a regular/semi-regular character.

The goose grease stuff was funny, as was the bickering between dad and granddad.  They took blood samples with those scary-looking needles in the 60s?  No wonder people didn't like going to the doctor.  And a side reference to the infamous Tuskegee syphilis study.

I was a bit shocked that they got chicken pox at such "advanced" ages. I think I was around 6 or 7 years old when I got chicken pox. Anyway, since Dean got chicken pox as a kid, I hope he's gotten his shingles shot as an adult. No goose grease can help that out.

Nice to know I'm not the only one who thought it was strange. That sounds about right. My older brother had it when he was around 8 or 9, and then I caught it from him when I was around 1. Granted, I was in middle school/junior high well after the 1960s, but I do not remember anyone in middle school getting chicken pox. I remember those letters from the school nurse going home in elementary school.

I'm 56, and I had chicken pox in elementary school (in the early 1970s). As I recall, most of my friends at the time did, too. But when I was in high school, there was one friend who got it then. So it does strike me as strange that so many people in the show were older and still hadn't had it, but it wasn't 100% impossible, I guess.

When I caught it, the neighborhood parents actually tried to get all of us to be exposed to each other so we'd all get it at the same time and get it over with. There was no idea that you could truly avoid it, so it was thought to be best to get it out of the way when you're a kid so it doesn't happen when you're an adult. It's more likely to cause serious problems when you're older.

"There is no way on God's green earth that I'm letting my son go into the woods with a nearsighted man with a shotgun." I fell out. Also "No ma'am, I'm not taking the white man's medicine." The grandfather was really funny. "Maybe you can trade a bite for an egg next week."

I thought it was really cute that Dean just wanted to bro out with his dad and grandpa. My brother really liked times like that with my dad and grandfather - no hunting, but they'd go to games and stuff. 

Thank God they didn't kill off Bruce.

This episode was a bit of a rollercoaster. I love that Dean is being proactive in making memories that his parents and grandparents just aren't thinking about. Hopefully, this stays with Bill and he makes more of an effort to do "Williams men" things with Dean.

I love that it was subtle, but there. Adult Dean's comment about still not talking about it / teaching it, was on point. Hopefully, people who wonder what he is talking about do some Googling, and learn. And hooray for not just a black doctor, but a black woman doctor. Be careful what you ask for, grandpa. Love Kim's reaction to sexist grandpa. She's fantastic.

I am one of those odd people that never got chicken pox.  Everyone around me got it.  But I didn't.

I do enjoy this show.  I hope it gets renewed.

It’s really growing on me. I think Dule Hill is terrific - this is such a different role than what he normally plays (I didn’t know he had this kind of range). And I like the older sister, too.

I'm glad that at least Bruce was injured and not killed, I have been worried about him since day one. 

Dean wanting to bond with his dad and grandpa was sweet, and he did get to bond with them, albeit not in the way he expected. Being the third kid can be rough, it can feel like all of the cool stuff happened already and that the shine of having a kid has worn off, so its nice that he got something unique. 

Even just a little Kim is always so great, I was dying at her side-eye towards her grandpa when he realized his doctor was a woman. "Were there men there?"

I got it in 1990 when I was 11.  My husband didn’t get it until he was in his 30s.  I’m not joking.

I was surprised to see Bill just being a little itchy. I'm an elder Millennial and so just missed out on the chicken pox vaccine. I was around 7 when I got them and my little brother was 6. Unfortunately, my dad hadn't had it before, so he also caught it at 32. My brother and I were mostly fine, miserable with the itching and feeling gross, but not scary. My dad on the other hand spent most of it completely miserable and almost got dragged to the ER by my mom.

It is considered to be much worse if you catch it as an adult. Not sure why that is, but I remember my generation was really big on the kids getting it young so they didn't risk it when they were older.

Yeah, that's why had to stay home and miss Christmas Eve and Day so I wouldn't spread it my relatives in their 60s and 70s when I was seven. It stinked for me. But didn't want to catch it.

I guess that's what happens when you get it in your 30s.  That was my husband's experience too.  Since I already had it, I went about my way doing my thing (it was Toronto Fashion Week and I had to cover a few shows for my blog).  This was before WFH was a thing (we're talking 2012 or so), so he just called in sick.  I think he still replied to a few emails and such.  I actually didn't break out that badly when I got it.

I was vaccinated as a kid and got chicken pox when I was 17. I was miserable. Missed a month of school. I remember my dad being outraged that I even got chicken pox because I had been vaccinated. This was a good episode. Loved Dean wondering how sick he really was because Kim was being nice to him.
