Disney+ announced a new live-action series, "The Spiderwick Chronicles," a modern coming-of-age story combined with fantasy adventure from Paramount Television Studios and 20th Television, one of the Disney Television Studios. The series, based on the beloved, best-selling books, follows the Grace Family - twin brothers Jared and Simon, their sister Mallory and mother Helen - as they move into their dilapidated ancestral home. They begin to unravel a dark mystery about their great-great Uncle who once discovered the secret and sometimes dangerous faerie world.

Christian Slater Joins ‘Spiderwick Chronicles’ Series at Disney+

Christian Slater will play Mulgarath (the alter ego Dr. Dorian Brauer), a Villain (with a capital-V) who does what all ogres do — eats people, he has an insatiable desire to consume. The Mulgarath wants the secrets contained in Arthur Spiderwick’s Field Guide to the Natural World for a nefarious scheme that might just satisfy his hunger.

The Spiderwick Chronicles Series by Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black, contains five books, “The Field Guide,” “The Seeing Stone,” “Lucinda’s Secret,” “The Ironwood Tree” and “The Wrath of Mulgarath.” A spinoff series, titled “Beyond the Spiderwick Chronicles,” consists of three novels: “The Nixie’s Song,” “A Giant Problem” and “The Wyrm King.” There was a film version released in 2008, and starred Freddie Highmore, Sarah Bolger, Mary-Louise Parker, Martin Short, Nick Nolte and Seth Rogen.

A contemporary American gothic coming-of-age story that addresses kids and families dealing with mental health issues among other relevant topics. Upon leaving New York and moving to Michigan and into their run-down ancestral home—The Spiderwick Estate—with their mother, twin brothers Jared and Simon Grace, along with their sister Mallory, find themselves pulled into an alternate, fantastical world.

‘The Spiderwick Chronicles’: Momona Tamada & Alyvia Alyn Lind Join Disney+ Series As Recurring

Momona Tamada will play Emiko. A local teenager in Henson, she’s a member of the out-patient group therapy at the Meskwaki Psychiatric Hospital. Diagnosed as a pathological liar it’s hard to know when she is telling the truth, but it’s clear that as a townie she has also grown-up hearing about the mysterious goings-on at the Spiderwick Estate and is curious about its newest resident, Jared Grace.

 Alyvia Alyn Lind will portray Calliope.

Although the six-episode series, from Paramount Television Studios and 20th Television, has been completed, Disney will claim the show as a financial loss for a bigger tax write-off. The show will be shopped by Paramount to other potential buyers.

Roku has landed the series, which will debut in early 2024
