The Freak Brothers TV Show Website

Available for free on Tubi.   https://tubitv.com/

This Adult Animated Comedy Series, which is based on The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers, the underground cult comic books, created by Gilbert Shelton, first published in 1968. The Freak Brothers’ comic book lives revolve around the procurement and enjoyment of recreational drugs, weed, stimulants, hallucinogens, any of the mind-melting hippy drugs. Many of their story lines portray their basic needs, to eat, to smoke, to party, to sleep, and the need for the opposite sex.

The new 8 episode animated TV Series follows the hijinks of three stoner characters who, after smoking a magical strain of weed in 1969, are transported 50 years into the future to 2020 bringing their ’60s San Francisco viewpoint to comprehend our modern society. The first two episodes Premiere November 14, 2021 with new episodes every Sunday, with a Dec. 26 finale.

L-R: Charlie, Chuck, Camille Switzer, Gretchen, Franklin Freek, Chomsky,
Freddy Freekowtski, Kitty, Phineas T.  Phreakears, Harper Switzer, Noah Switzer.

Freewheelin' Franklin Freek   (Woody Harrelson)
Freewheelin’ Franklin, a laid-back, smooth talking Cannabis Cowboy from Texas, is the most street smart of the Freaks. He spent many years on the road before settling into the ‘60s San Francisco scene. Ladies love him and men wish they had his natural coolness. He is the best equipped among the ill equipped Freaks to handle life in 2020.

Fat Freddy Freekowtski     (John Goodman)
Fat Freddy is a rotund man-child whose wants in life are simple: food, weed, and to have a good time. What Freddy lacks in intellect, he makes up for in sincerity and childlike optimism. He’s Homer Simpson with a heart of gold and a pocketful of pot. While Phineas and Franklin are like brothers to him, Freddy’s best friend in the world is his cat, Kitty. They’re so close, they can talk to each other.

Phineas T.  Phreakears   (Pete Davidson)
Phineas is the Freaks’ self-appointed leader, self-taught chemist, and self-declared intellectual. He spends his time inventing new mind altering substances and conspiracy theories. Hot tempered and committed to social change (as long as he doesn’t have to wake up before noon), Phineas has a soft spot for misfits and underdogs. He watches out for the other Freaks as much as he leads them into trouble.

Kitty    (Tiffany Haddish)
Kitty is quick-witted and whip-smart. She has a sarcastic, critical point of view toward the Freaks and modern life. Kitty loves Freddy to death, but gets exasperated by his “dumb-dumbness.” Often frustrated by Freddy forgetting to feed her, Kitty schemes at a better life for herself away from the Freaks, but always ends up staying because in the end, they’re family.

Chuck (Adam Devine) and Charlie (Blake Anderson)
Two kindred spirits the Freaks befriend in present day, Chuck and Charlie are a couple of weed-idiot savants always looking for the next side-hustle. These grrody weirdos have hearts of Acapulco Gold hidden beneath their crusty, unwashed exteriors.

Gretchen    (La La Anthony)
Gretchen is Harper’s more liberal and idealistic younger sister. A social-advocate lawyer, she’s very passionate and always hopping from one cause to the next.

Harper Switzer   (Andrea Savage)
Harper is a no-nonsense ass kicking tech industry boss. She is a boss at work and the clear boss of the Switzer clan.

Noah Switzer    (Phil LaMarr)
Noah is a people-pleasing man trying desperately to adapt to our fast-changing society. He tries to maintain some masculinity in his marriage, but it’s not really his forte.

Camille Switzer    (Liza del Mundo)
Camille is the adopted daughter of Noah and Harper. While she’s not in the cool club at school, she’s the smartest in the family.

Chomsky    (Danny Gendron)
The Switzer family pet dog (a whippet). Privileged and pampered and enjoyer of the finer things in a dog’s life.

S01.E01: Pilot
After learning that the mystical Swami Bhajan holds the secret to the “ultimate high,” Franklin, Phineas, Freddy, & Kitty go to Woodstock to find him.
Premiere Date: November 14, 2021

S01.E02: Squatters' Rights
The Freaks attempt to regrow the same strain of dope that transported them to 2020 by incubating a small seed stuck inside Freddy’s ass.
Premiere Date: November 14, 2021

I've watched the first couple of episodes.  I can't say this show quite conveys the same feel of the original underground classic comic book.  But it's nice to see it get an adaptation nonetheless.  Wow, they've really changed the cat, but it's still been an enjoyable character.  Of the brothers, Woody Harrelson captures Freewheelin' Franklin in a way most close to my imagination.

I was really looking forward to seeing this , as I still have my collection of comix. But, when the first episode said 1969, The Summer of Love, I checked out.

1967, in case you didn't know.
