Fast Food: Do You Want Fries With That?

Wow. I had no clue it was that high. When I was in NY I'd go over to New Jersey to shop as there was no tax on clothes etc and that made a big difference when I was school clothes shopping for my daughter (for what I would have spent on tax I got socks and underwear for free, so to speak).

There aren't any where I currently live, but I remain a staunch fan of Jack in the Box and will search them out if I'm out West. I'll grant that some of it might be nostalgia since that was our household's go-to quick meal when I was growing up. Jumbo Jack and onion rings, please!

Their old fashioned hamburgers (with mayo), seasoned fries, and low prices are plus points for Checkers.

Last summer Arby's had a special BLT made with brown sugar bacon and I'm hoping they bring that back this year. (Although out of all fast food, that's probably one of the easiest to make at home.) I had never eaten there before but a coupon for the BLT drew me in. I've been back a couple of times since for a Reuben sandwich.

^^^ They sure didn't skimp on the bacon. It looks good. Have you tried a BLT with avocado?

You'll be shocked to hear that the actual sandwich didn't measure up to Arby's promotional photos. There was a decent amount of bacon, though.

I'm not a big fan of avocado slices, although a smear of guacamole on a BLT in place of the mayo could be interesting ...

Canada.

And in NYC, there's no tax on shoes or clothing under $110 per item.

Finding a positive thing to say about New York taxes wasn't easy to do. We're dead last in the United States. Even California is like, "good luck with that..." Woo hoo we're #1!

Most food is tax free.

The new Zinger sandwich at KFC?  Don't bother.  Wendy's spicy chicken is much better. I tried the Zinger today and  I've been to the bathroom twice in the last hour and had to take some Pepto Bismol.

Mickey D's is advertising the return of Gilroy Garlic Fries.  If you haven't had the opportunity, you used to drive by the town of Gilroy, roll down the windows, and smell the garlic.  Haven't been there in years.

Anyway, they're fries topped with garlic, parmesan, parsley and olive oil.  Soggy but worth it.

You're mean!  The garlic fries are available only in the Bay Area.  Booooo!

That whole part of California, where all the agriculture is, is fun to drive through because you go through all those smell zones.

But speaking of garlic smell, a friend of mine in Austin, Texas, intermittently has a very pronounced garlic smell at his house.  It drove him crazy, just because he couldn't figure it out.  Someone he knows who lives a mile or so away told him it's because of the railroad on MoPac--trains carrying garlic from Mexico use it, and depending on the direction of the wind, different neighborhoods get the smell.

In fast food news, Wendy's is doing their summer sale on small frosties--50 cents.  What a deal.

My husband tried one of Taco Bell's new "naked" breakfast tacos -- it has a fried egg in place of a tortilla or taco shell.  We were both surprised at how similar it looked to the ones on the commercials.  He liked the bacon one and said he will try the sausage one next time.

Interesting, I am going to have to try one of those.  I'm all about a high protein breakfast and don't mind a little extra grease now and again.

French fries with hints of sesame, seaweed and garlic.

Telera bread with toasted mayo, pork bulgogi, avocado, kimchi, Seoulmate sauce, cilantro & lettuce.

That looks so good.  It's food porn.

It was definitely food porn. This is from a local, kind of artsy patio place. The menu is short. I think about 12 items in all. It was so good I had to let everyone know about it, lol.

I so want to eat that!! I wouldn't mind a short menu if the food is outstanding and fresh. Yum on that sandwich. Now I want one lol.

We had a Jimmy Johns Gourmet Sandwich shop open up in my little Idaho town and I'm extremely underwhelmed. They don't have anything you can't get at Subway other than their whole wheat sandwich is on sliced bread rather than a sub bun. You can't personalize your sandwiches and asking for something on the side makes the counter person hyperventilate. All in all, I'd rather go to Subway and get exactly what I want on my sandwich.

The only thing Jimmy John's has to recommend it over a sandwich you make at home is that they more ingredients than most people tend to keep in their homes. Subway has definitely tried to improve their quality; although, it's been quite some time since I've eaten a sandwich from there. If you have the opportunity, you should try Panera, Jason's Deli, Schlotzsky's, or strangely enough Arby's.

On another note, a Long Beach restaurant has been outed for selling Popeyes fried chicken in their dishes.

https://munchies.vice.com/en_us/article/43ng4n/california-restaurant-admits-its-been-serving-popeyes-chicken-for-months

This is the restaurant: http://www.sweetdixiekitchenlb.com

If you are incapable of making a particular menu item that other restaurants are perfectly capable of making, don't put that on your menu. Fried chicken isn't kimchi or milling flour. It's disingenuous for the owner of Sweet Dixie to act like those things are equivalent.

This isn't exactly a fast food place but there are two of these places in town and they only cater to the breakfast crowd. My issue is undercooked eggs. No, I'm fine if it's poached or over easy but when I order scrambled I do not want to see the clear-ish undercooked egg whites. It just grossed me out. I didn't want to send them back because the chef had already to me that no, I couldn't have onions with my home fries. It would mess up his grill. Somehow I almost feel that I should have just gone for a sausage mcmuffin at Mickey D's. Scratch that. Next time I'll just cook at home. Oh, and the 2 eggs, 3 slices of bacon, home fries sans onions and English muffin was $8.99. Ugh

Soft pretzel fans, get thee to Sonic before these are gone! The cheese sauce is fine, but next time I'm just going to dunk mine in mustard. In my opinion, this was better than Auntie Anne's.

https://www.sonicdrivein.com/-/pretzeltwist/1100-soft-pretzel-twist

Thanks for the heads up. Auntie Anne's are too sweet for my taste. I've gotten into the habit of picking up a soft pretzel at the airport for the few times I fly for something filling and is easy to carry on. I picked up some SuperPretzel frozen at Sam's that I like, not sweet at all. As a kid, getting a soft pretzel on a street corner in Philadelphia for the twice a year shopping trips was such a treat! That, and being given coins to eat at the Automat and listening to the organ at Wanamakers. I'll have to try Sonics. And always mustard, not cheese!

I don't remember the last time I had a soft pretzel, but now I am craving one.  There's a local brewery that makes a good one; guess I'll have to stop off for beer and pretzel.  Oh darn.  I've never tried Auntie Anne's - just the smell as I walk by at the mall tells me they're way too sweet for me.  I don't think we have Sonic around here.

I remember the automats in NYC from my childhood.  Good memories.  For some reason, I always chose the cherry pie.

I don't have a conveniently located Taco Bell so one of you is going to have to go check out their new nacho fries and report back.

Brad Jones of the Cinema Snob fame has another show called Brad Tries, and he tried the Nacho Fries recently.

I've watched too many reviews for those fries on YT. One channel I stumbled across was this guy's which I subscribed to because he's polite and reviews the items well without acting over the top or stupid for attention.

What I don't get is, he's all "Taco Bell's never had fries." Maybe they didn't have the kind that looks like what you get at Mickey D's, but they did have a fried potato side, maybe they still have it; I could get the info on it off of their online menu. I give you Cheesy Fiesta Potatoes. They are/were fat, kinda chunky potatoes with nacho cheese sauce & sour cream on top. They used to have green onions too, but at least some of the NY/NJ Taco Bell's, maybe stores in other states, had a big outbreak of E.coli in 2006, which led to the chain completely removing green onions from their food for awhile. Then once the outbreak was taken care of, & the green onions were back, they were permanently removed from some of the menu items which had included them before; I'm pretty sure these potatoes were among the items that had them, but now don't have them.

Maybe. I'm in Northeast Indiana & we have them (if they haven't been replaced by the nacho fries), or we had them (if they've been replaced). I thought they were a national thing though, like the nacho fries supposedly are.

I tried the nacho fries supreme from taco bell (they are very different from the potatoes from before) and they're pretty good. I was afraid they'd be soggy due to all the cheese and beef but they stayed crispy while I went back to work. I'm not sure if I'd like just the fries with the cheeses dip, but with the site cream and beef I'd order then again. Definitely not a driving food though.I needed a fork.

Yesterday I went in Sonic to order a pineapple cheesecake shake (off menu, but delicious) only to be told that Sonic has decided to stop carrying pineapple. I told the employee that makes me sad, one of the best drinks is a pineapple limeade (also off menu). She pointed out that it also means no pineapple for the banana splits (a quick look at their web site shows no banana splits). Then she said they have also stopped carrying malts. The heck?

Wow. Our Sonic is near the grocery store I shop at. I remember a few years ago being behind a young woman wearing a Sonic shirt buying a boat load of bananas. She told the clerk they had run out.

I just tried the 6" pizzas at Mod Pizza yesterday and they were really good.  They have a very thin crust (but w/o having that awful cracker texture--it's a real pizza crust texture); the sauce is good and so were the toppings. I got pepperoni for myself and veggie for Mr. P914. Thank goodness I got there just before the next crowd lined up so I was in and out in no time.  Being a pizza fussbudget from NY, I have to say these are tasty/edible and it's good to know where to get a decent little pizza real fast, real easy (haven't ordered from Domino's or any local pizza deliveries in years thanks to the spongy faux mozzarella, sour sauce, & bready texture to their crusts).

No pineapple?  I finally got Mr. Outlier, the real shake fan in this family, to switch to pineapple instead of banana.  Oh well...it's probably a good thing I won't have 44-ounce half-price pineapple shakes available any more.

But why wouldn't you carry pineapple?  It's just canned, right?  Not like bananas, which actually go bad.  Sheesh.

I'm a thick crust person--the pan pizzas at Pizza Hut, with that butter-ish whatever it is on the crust, make me swoon, and reheated in a toaster oven make me swoon all over again.  But I like Mod Pizza.  I like the one-price system regardless of toppings, even though I usually maybe one topping, and never any meat.  Now, if they had sun dried tomatoes and pine nuts, I'd be a huge fan.

Tonight I tried the $1 version of the Nacho Fries, paired with a bacon-egg-cheese taco from Taco Cabana (yay for finally serving breakfast tacos all day!). Two thumbs up.

Aah, Taco Cabana, also known as Taco del Baño in this house.  I'm not sure quite what the deal is, but the ones in Albuquerque look just like all the others, but are apparently separately owned, and have different menu items, most notably the carne adovada.  That's my go-to dish in New Mexico, and having a really good version at a fast-food place is heaven.  Plus their fresh flour tortillas, which are pretty much the best I've found anywhere.

This is totally weird, but the Dollar Tree carries a really solid soft pretzel in the freezer case. They come 6 for $1. I'm rarely in the mood, but I'll bake them if I'm bringing dip to a party.

Underwhelming is too strong a word for Whataburger's mushroom swiss burger. It's not that it's bad, but it's just kind of there. You're aware that you've eaten food, but it leaves almost no impression on you. Like nutrient pellets in sci fi movies.

Have you had Whatburger's patty melt? I've been tempted to try it but always just get my usual Whataburger Jr. with cheese.

I love the patty melt. Though like many an offering from Whataburger, it's a tad too salty (not like the Monterrey melt, which is a salt bomb).

I love dollar stores anyway and now you've given me another reason to go.
