HBO's IN THE SAME BREATH, directed by award-winning filmmaker Nanfu Wang ("One Child Nation") debuts WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 18 (9:00-10:40 p.m. ET/PT). The documentary will debut on HBO and will be available to stream on HBO Max.

Synopsis: IN THE SAME BREATH recounts the experiences of people on the ground in the earliest days of the novel coronavirus and the way two countries dealt with its initial spread, from the first days of the outbreak in Wuhan to its rampage across the United States. Directed with a deeply personal approach by Wang, who was born in China and now lives in the United States, the film explores the early confusion and parallel campaigns by authorities to try to contain the virus as well as shape the public narrative through misinformation, resulting in a devastating impact on citizens of both countries.

Watched this last night. Very good. Just goes to show you no matter what kind of government you live under, you can't trust them because they are lying liars who lie. My heart goes out for all those who have died from the virus, no matter where they were.

Boy, tough to watch. It’s unfortunate the US and Chinese medical experts, including people like Fauci, were so wrong early on about human to human transmission but this was so new and different that they didn’t know, but perhaps they should have given more cautious advice. It’s also unfortunate the US administration was...at odds with itself let’s say. It’s interesting how touchy the Chinese government was about looking weak to foreigners. The comparison of various Chinese and Americans, especially medical folks, fighting to get the truth out in the face of hostile opposition from government and hospital officials was quite interesting, then comparing that to those folks protesting that Covid wasn’t even real and against lockdowns and even masks was really something. No wonder the filmmaker was puzzled with the latter
