S13.E08: A Harlem Night

I agree - lots of white on white. But no, I don't think she's having money troubles. She got Southampton in the divorce and they sold the marital apartment. Southampton is her primary address. I suspect, like Lu, she rents a pied-à-terre to keep one foot in the city. And for filming.

That is my thought too since she went to the South Hampton to vote, that just might be her full time residence.  I did notice the sticker on her front door, it looked like the sort of sticker on the back of a hotel door.

I love that Ramona pulled a Meredith Marks (RHSLC) and disengaged. Unfortunately, being her apartment, she couldn't leave, so she left the room, vented to Coco, gave herself a pep-talk, and went back in.

For as educated as Eboni is, she can't read a room to save this show her life, even when DIRECTLY told.

During this scene, I was wondering who Ramona was talking to. Coco never crossed my mind! I figured it was production.

I have had enough Eboni to last a lifetime. Too bad, because in theory she was perfect.

Leah, why didn't you wear your lime green outfit to dinner? The outfit you did wear still had the tags!

I had the same thought. Lu didn’t even consider wearing hers because Leah was supposed to show up in that color. I missed seeing the tags. She probably wore it that one night and took it back for return the next day.
I thought LuAnn even looked a little costumey with the red opera gloves. All she was missing was one of those long cigarette holders.

Ramona went into her room to compose herself, then came out and kissed Ebony’s ass.  Another Sonja kiss ass.

What you said.  Ramona folded like a cheap suit with her ridiculous lovey dovey behavior and I am bummed with her doing that.

I am beyond sick of the Eboni and Ivory Leah.  As others have stated, this was the most boring episode in the history of HoWives for me.  The speakeasy could have been cool and interesting, but it wasn't because of the mouth that never shuts up.  Viewers can take many things, but boredom is not one of them.

I immediately liked Bershan, she appeared to have a common sense approach to the subject matter, and she seemed FUN.  Imagine that.  Bring her back and get rid of Eboni and Ivory  Leah.

It was very much a cross of Cruella and Madame Medusa 😄 She just needed some green jewelry to go with the cigarette holder!

Ramona picks up Bershan to go to Harlem then leaves her there. Real classy Ramona.

What's so great about inviting the girls to Harlem then closing down a restaurant so they could eat/argue alone? You can do that on any city street in Manhattan. I guess covid had something to do with it but I agree with Lu. Where's the fun, the music, the dancing? Harlem is known for the awesome jazz clubs and live music but again I guess covid had something to do with it.

BRAVO should have waited a while longer to start filming because this season is a disaster in part because of the lack of any thing to do in the city.

Oh for the old gang back, with the husbands too. Bravo should just repeat the old seasons again.  Why not?  Sex and the City does.  I could watch the old seasons week after week.  Hilarious.  Ramona giving Mario a massage in her underwear .. then he dumps her.  Scary Island with Jill and Bobby.  Bethenny peeing in the pot with her wedding gown on.  T.v. Gold.

I think Covid had everything to do with this season.  No jazz clubs, dancing, restaurants, and no live music - at least indoors.

Even the speakeasy part of that restaurant looked way to small to be maskless to me and it was clearly only open to the ho-wives.   I was trying to figure out how Leah and Eboni were having lunch inside in November.   I know everywhere was different but I thought indoor dining was not happening in NYC at that time.

The endless "weekend" at Ramona's with multiple themes and events attended only by them included only happened because they couldn't take a trip.

I don't think Eboni is going to get on with Bershan. Eboni likes to control the narrative and it looks like Bershan just wants to have fun. Should be interesting.

If this show is scripted, which I heard from a good source that ALL reality shows are scripted, then it might be time to change the script or change scriptwriter. This show has become a borefest. None of these women are having fun anymore..it's quite apparent. Eboni is an interesting person but jeez...the history lessons and lecturing all the time is really killing this franchise. Can't she just sit back and relax once in awhile? And Leah, her sidekick and suck up, acting as though she's the only white person in NYC that "gets it" is obnoxious. This season is making me miss Dorinda and Bethanny and I never thought that would be possible.

When Leah said that Bunny is involved with every decision she makes about Kier, I thought for sure she was going to say it was because she (Bunny) has primary custody of her.

I thought she might have too. On the podcast a few years ago she claimed Bunny was raising Kier Catholic.

All reality shows are scripted to a large extent now.  For example Luann decides to talk about her past behavior and alcohol use with her daughter while the film crew is there.  Also, the editors choose what to show to create what they believe will be a compelling storyline.  This season, partly due to Covid and partly due to the storylines they have chosen, has not been great viewing.  We get much more candid interactions with others around and when the women can almost forget they are on camera.

Eboni could have made the assignment of persons to each housewife more interesting if she let them read the cards themselves and then talk about the people or, if they wanted to, ask her questions.  Then it would have been a conversation rather than a lecture.  Housewives shows have had one housewife gift unique items to the others and explain why they chose the particular gift, however that usually leads to more fun or unwarranted outrage which is fun for the viewers. Having them think about why did I get this person would have been more interesting.

Yes, they are all scripted.

I think Eboni is sticking to her script of being the educator, but the problem is, her grating personality is showing through.

Side note:  Someone recently told me that they knew Kelly Bensimmon, and the episode where Bethenny & Kelly met at a bar, where Bethenny blew up, was completely scripted.  Kelly said they were having a lovely conversation, but the second the camera turned on, Bethenny jumped up and started screaming at her out of nowhere.

So yeah, I think this is all scripted.

I actually think the Eboni/Ramona evening was completely scripted.  Eboni was to bring up politics, where Ramona would get upset and flustered, but in the end, Ramona would end up in Eboni's lap.  And.....scene.

Well, the narratives are predetermined.  This is not quite the same thing as "scripted," at least not to me.  The women are still winging it with their own dialogue I'm pretty sure, and this often makes for some unintentionally hilarious moments.

am curious to what extent Eboni got to choose her Harlem Renaissance personality brands.  Like to me, Langston Hughes is kinda Mister Harlem Renaissance, and I was kinda WTF at his exclusion from the rostrum.

I've highlighted the crux of the issue...making a long, informative presentation to people who have not specifically asked for it.  Regardless of who you are or whatever the topic, if the audience has not already expressed interest it is generally not going to be received in a thankful or appreciative manner. Especially if the audience is hungry and said presentation is delaying food service.

I think that Luann was going along with the thought that "Harlem Nights" was the theme of the get together, along with where they were dining.

"Harlem Nights", as a party/gathering is often lumped together with "Roaring 20's", "Gatsby", "Prohibition Nights" party themes when looking at decor, costumes, etc.  I know this because I just started looking for decor, etc., for a "Roaring 20's" themed party we're holding at our community Clubhouse, and those party theme categories were all listed, and the decor items are all the same.

Most of the jazz and ragtime clubs were located in Harlem in the '20's, and they became popular with many New Yorkers, including the NY elite.

I think that's why Luann went full-on with the long, slinky red dress, fur jacket, and elbow-length gloves - it was her idea of dressing for the theme that revolved around Harlem and the 1920's.

I could be wrong, though, and maybe Luann just wanted to wear her cabaret dress that haden't been worn in a year, or to give Jovani another free plug.

I too must say, Team Ramona. If I want constant lectures on race, I will turn on a Cable news station that Eboni did NOT work for. I do not watch any of the Housewives shows for lectures on race. The subject has certainly come up on Beverly Hills, and I haven't minded it at all. But, it is not the main focus of every episode. I can enjoy these shows without agreeing with all of the views of the women.   Ramona may be an idiot but, after all these years, she's our idiot. I honestly don't think she is mean spirited, she is just clueless. Team Ramona. Team Lu. They can dump the rest and start over.

Honestly Kelly Dodd was on Jeff Lewis' show and the RH universe came up and he mentioned that the difference in the discussions is when Garcelle would discuss her point of view it was done in a relatable way and about HER perception and it made sense and it really made you think where Eboni comes off really preachy and heavy and not organic.

I agreed and as someone who is multi-racial myself (I say this so that I do not get lectured about checking my privileged) I define ME not anyone else and I do not like being told that as a XXXXX I should feel XXXX.  I have stopped watch RHONY because it just seems to be unorganic and the regulars are afraid to do or say anything and honestly I don't watch the RH for anything other than entertainment and house porn.  Garcelle and her points I feel do not feel forced where RHONY is just.... NOT

Also, Garcelle shows us other aspects of her life.  We see her as a mom, workingg, with her girlfriends, and with the other women.

Eboni hasn't done that yet other than when she was hanging out with her friend in the first episode.  As Ramona said... we're still on layer 1 of the onion with Eboni.

I don’t have a problem with Ramona not wanting to discuss politics. It’s not “we don’t discuss those things in our circles”. I belong to two friend groups of which the members all have differing ideologies. I have a strict rule of no politics out of respect for each persons’ beliefs, not because we “don’t talk about those things”. We’re not friends because of our politics and we’re not going to change each other’s beliefs or values. Everyone is entitled to their own. So we leave it out and just enjoy each other for who we are. I thought that was all Ramona was trying to do and Eboni just kept pushing her.

I think Ramona also sensed that she was being led into a trap and didn't want to engage in an on camera discussion that could result in her saying something on the record that could be used as ammunition against her. You can draw an inference about her politics by how she reacted and Leah will probably make hay about that at the reunion (judging by the season so far, it's not like they're going to have anything else to talk about but I'm sure it'll still be a three parter), but she won't be able to use Ramona's actual words against her because she didn't say anything.

I like Eboni, but something has been niggling at me. She’s living in her ex fiancé‘s condo or apartment. Is she staying there without paying any rent? Is that the action of an independent woman? Also, I seem to recall that she said her engagement was broken because her fiancé left her to stay with his children and maybe grandchildren during the pandemic? That sounds like he might have been a little older than Ebony. Of course his kids wanted their father to stay with them. New Jersey is a different state and he would’ve had to quarantine to return to New York as well as New York being very dangerous as the epicenter at that time of the pandemic. So, why didn’t Ebony go with him? Wouldn’t have that made more sense?

It’s a thing in NYC with the elite.  It’s the type of thing Leah would make fun of the other women doing it but now that she has a little money it’s nasty Ramona boob jobs and private schools.

Has it occurred to anyone that the group didn’t go to many places in Harlem because there was a pandemic and most places were closed?

Restaurants could have been hired for a shoot where everyone had to be tested and limited staff.  That’s probably what they did at this restaurant, I doubt it was open for the public.   I know some big productions rented complete hotels and brought in their own catering to rehearse a play.
And that expensive restaurant on 119th Street that 90% of Harlem residence couldn’t afford is hardly showing them what Harlem is like.  That restaurant could fit in anywhere in Manhattan.
And who didn’t know all of those famous Black people she assigned to the housewives  except maybe 1 or 2 of them.  I only didn’t recognize one of them. The rest of them are famous, period.  Not just Black people know them.
More interesting is so many Black people moved into NYC, specifically Harlem, the great migration from the South.   She didn’t talk about the Harlem Renaissance, the Cotton Club, the Appollo Theatre, the incredible artists that made Harlem a great place to be. That is until the Great Depression.

A good speaker could have made this interesting and if she could have shared stories about some good times she had in Harlem she wouldn’t have lost her audience.  She’s boring, not always articulate on points she’s trying to make, awkwardly throwing in trendy terms like white fragility, micro aggressions in random places.

Lu referred to Jacques as “Jack” in a TH.

Restaurateur, not restauranteur, Shed Media chyron department.

So far, what annoyed me the most about Eboni is how much Bershan offended her, and the way she was stabbing the food with her fork and planting her left elbow on the table.

Victoria intrigues me because she seems to care not at all about her appearance, or else seems oblivious to how she looks. Her mouth is a curiosity.

Is this the first time we heard the police officer say (in response to Lu slurring “Wha’d’I do? Wha’d’I do wrong?”) “Leave your feet in the vehicle!”

It's odd to me that a father being with his child during a pandemic would be something that breaks you up.  If she was upset that he chose his child over her during an unprecedented time, she's an asshole.

It makes me wonder if the pandemic offered up the perfect excuse for ex-fiance to slow things down and get her used to the idea of not being together before laying down the final breakup blow.

Perhaps Leah told Lu about the “mint green satin” outfit and meant “mint chocolate chip ice cream green charmeuse,” which is a very pale green. And lighting made it look even paler, almost white?

Lu keeps validating my theory that Alexandre enormously influenced her outfit choices during the first few seasons. Remember the gown she chose for that pageant or model contest “Before They Were HWs”?

I think that was the designers thing, an orange tag sewn on the sleeve, what drives me crazy is when people buy a wool winter coat or blazer and fail to remove the makers brand on the sleeve...that is not supposed to be worn as a fashion statement.

That green silk outfit was the one and only thing Leah wore that I actually liked.

Most interesting part of this episode for me was Eboni's snide confessional dismissal–"Oh, she's one of those 'All Lives Matters'"—after Bershan made her statement that people are people.  Critical race theory debate in a nutshell, I thought.  I suppose Eboni could have been more condescending and derisive.  She's incredibly tiresome and one-note, and obviously does not celebrate diversity if it means another Black woman has an opinion different from her own.

And Leah going from Black Allly (in the true Robin DiAngelo sense of the word) to White Priviege Mama with the—snort—high school consultant was pret-ty funny.

For me, it was curious that Bershan seemed a bit dismissive toward how/why/what Eboni was trying to share with the others.
I was also a little surprised how Eboni reacted to Bershan's comments, and that she did it in her TH instead of saying something as it was happening. Addressing it right then could've had an impact on the other women present. Instead it felt like 'See, Bershan is saying it's all not a big deal', which seemed like it voided a bit of what Eboni was trying to impart. I'd figure she'd want to jump on that immediately, lol.

I do understand where Eboni is coming from and why she's wanting to speak on racial issues as much as she can, and it's interesting to hear things from her perspective. But, it's starting to feel a little like she's talking down to the others, and by extension, me the viewer.

Then, for a moment, I thought the cosmos shifted, because in what universe could Leah ever be the voice of reason? I liked her advice to Eboni: to let the 'teachable moments' happen in a more relaxed and natural manner; to let go a bit and get to know the ladies more deeply, and individually(and vice versa), then address things as they come up (if she feels she needs to) instead of Eboni holding a class at each gathering--But then Leah kept talking and the universe righted itself, ha!

My first thought, over Leah's mom being so heavily involved in the school stuff, was that she's paying for it.

Dean Jones: It seems to me that Kramerica Industries is little more than a solitary man in a messy apartment, which may or may not contain a chicken!
Kramer: And with Darren's help, we'll get that chicken!

Hahaha! Omg 🤣🤣🤣 You are just too fantastic!! Thank you for more than getting the reference!

Yes! Yet another example of Eboni twisting someone else’s words to fit her narrative. I didn’t think Bershan was alluding to All Lives Matter (as opposed to BLM) at all. And she certainly never said those words. I thought she was trying to say we’re all women, we’re all the same doll parts, I’m sick of having to define identities on everything, let’s celebrate each other and enjoy the evening. 🍸

His family didn't want to be lectured 24/7 while in quarantine.

As a POC, Ebony is pretty much preaching to the choir with me but it is still preaching so I am over it.

Bershawn gave me the token model minority vibe but maybe it’s too soon to tell. I just can’t say I immediately liked her and her “we are all the same” speech. But Ebony needs to chill a bit. She is killing the vibe.

One thing is for sure, I loved having more black women in NYC! of all places. Perhaps this will help curb Ebony’s need to be the spokesperson.

Discussing Eboni's work at Fox News is okay; although this would best take place in her character thread.  Debating whether Fox News, MSNBC, CNBC, CNN, . . . are biased or not is not show discussion.  You can debate this civilly in the Small Talk thread.

Discussing the "I'm going to leave my own home rather than talk anything related to politics" scene is okay.  Please do not refer to politicians not mentioned on the show or discuss your personal political beliefs, voting record or party alignment.
