With Mare forced to take a backseat on the case, Colin presses a local priest about the vague circumstances that prompted his transfer to the parish; an anonymous call gives Dawn hope that Katie might still be alive.

Original air date: 5/9/21

Geez, my heart broke for at least 4 characters tonight.

I'm still getting thoughts together and need to watch again, but:

I'm glad Mare confirmed she put the dope in the car, and why. What she did was shitty, but after that flashback, I can't say I blame her. What Carrie and Kevin did would have gotten them both behind bars, if they hadn't ripped off and beaten a family member who might have felt obligated to protect her son so fuck. That. Shit. Mare owes Carrie no fucks.

(Still: as a police detective, where the hell is Mare's self defense training? Is there a PTSD issue that leaves her unable to cope when physical violence enters the picture?)

Aside from the stellar script and acting, I think what I admire most about this series is how it depicts the victims of these so-called victimless crimes.

Poor Dawn. I'm sure I'm not the only one who saw that coming.

LOVE Helen sneaking the ice cream. I wonder when the mess in the breadbin will be discovered.

Did Mare make two dates for Saturday? That's so Marsha Brady.

So ... Where's Bennie's Tavern? Surely it's not the same from episode 1.

I shouldn't have watched that SNL clip right before the episode; that accent really stood out and of almost every character!

Katie's alive! So, either Erin's case is unrelated or she fought back against the kidnapper enough that he ended up killing her. Remind me, was Erin's death an exact year to the date after Katie's disappearance? Was that a significant date to the kidnapper? From what we saw of him, he looked fairly stocky. Cousin Dan looked a little too slight to be him but who knows?

And what is the significance of 5/29/17? That's too early for DJ's birthday, right? And besides, why would Erin hide the locket then? Is it an anniversary with the father of DJ perhaps? Did the locket belong to Katie and the kidnapper give it to Erin at some point? That doesn't make too much sense to have a date on it though. Although Katie had her birthday tattooed on her ankle so maybe she likes mementos with significant dates on them.

Erin was pretty terrible to pretend Dylan was the father but she was smart about wanting to make Dylan's parents DJ's grandparents, I guess.

I love Jean Smart. She was cracking me up this episode. "That was really STUPID, Mare." Yep, the audience agrees with you there! Plus, "Sorry I'm not MAIMED enough for you!" Ha. She was making me wonder with those mixed vegetables and chocolate syrup until she pulled that ice cream out.

Becca really flipped out. Is she a super jealous type who messed with Erin after Siobhan went after her? Doubtful but maybe she had something to do with where Erin ended up that night.

It freaked me out when they showed that girl get abducted by a guy in black and then they showed Zabel eating dinner with his mom wearing black. They can’t make him the serial abductor, right? And what in the world was up with Mare’s friend’s son staring at the TV screen in a weird way. His parents even looked bothered at the way he was staring at it. Maybe he saw one of his uncles abducting Katie?

Poor Beth and Dawn. And I know Erin is death but that was a shitty thing to do to Dylan and his family forcing them to raise her son, and then asking for surgery money when she knew the kid wasn’t his.

"I don't know what to say ... oh it's coming to me, how idiotic!"

Drew doesn't like Carrie's place with the noisy white trash neighbors, though the official reason is he missed the turtle.  Carrie's trying but is she redeemable?  She asks Mare to give her a chance but is she going to permanently rip Drew away from her grandmother, whom he's clearly bonded to?

OK, Erin thought Dylan's parents were so loving but they raised Dylan!  His mother thinks Dylan just melted and held DJ, getting out of his hospital bed.  But what she didn't see was him going to the crib with the pillow!

So more teen drama involving Siobhan.  Brings new gf home and they're making out hot and heavy, enough for the ex gf Becca to be able to hear them through headphones.  Nothing to do with the case but it adds to the interesting home life Mare has?

Mare goes to see the therapist and like every patient that therapists get, they're all skeptical of therapy, so the therapist can only say, "while you're here, why don't we talk?"  Then Mare goes to see Colin, whose mother Judy was talking shit about Mare just before she range the doorbell.  Judy notices her son's aw shucks manner around older woman Mare as she interrogates Colin about the new case.

After the first episode, we wondered if Easttown was one of those small working-class towns hit hard by the opioid epidemic.  Of course Bethy's brother, whom we saw in the first episode, is a prime example.  But now, the latest victim was a promising student but got hurt and hooked on opioids so started hooking on SideDoor -- is that a real site, does Easttown also have NextDoor?

So this is going to turn out to be some sex slave thing?  There was that one big case in the Midwest where they finally freed some young woman who had been in a basement since she was a little girl.  If Erin's murder is by the same perp, he was trying to have some kind of a harem?

The man who abducted Katie & Missy, he looks like Colin Zabel to me. Look at the size of his hands and his clean-shaven jaw. At first, I thought it’s Billy Ross but Billy has beard. Doesn’t look like Deacon Mark either.

I was trying to notice the hair at the back of his neck. I didn’t think it quite matched Zabel’s & I thought the hands were too beefy, but I could be wrong. It definitely wasn’t Richard, any of the bearded guys, or Mare’s cousin.

Couldn’t be Kenny McMenamin as he has longer sideburns. But am not ruling him out as Erin’s killer yet because in E01, he came home (from somewhere) in the early morning when Erin’s body was found. What about Tony Delrasso, Brianna’s dad?

I couldn't tell if Dawn kept the truth from Beth because she was embarrassed that she fell for it or because she didn't want to burden Beth with the knowledge of what her brother did. I'm guessing a little bit of both. I can't blame her for holding out hope that her daughter was alive though.

If the flashback of Kevin and Carrie is any indication of what was going on regularly, poor Mare. I can't imagine what it's like to have the baby you carried steal from you and call you a bitch because you had the audacity to not want to give him money to buy drugs. Mare planting drugs in Carrie's car was still wrong but at least now we can understand a lot more why she is reluctant to hand Drew over to her.

At first I was surprised that Mare told her mom and Siobhan exactly what happened at work, but I guess living in a small town it was just a matter of time before they found out. At least this way she got to tell them the truth instead of letting them find out the gossipy version.

Mare's mom hiding ice cream in the vegetable bag was hilarious, but when the doorbell rang, I was like nooooo, put it back in the freezer! It's RIGHT THERE! I like that she and Mare have such a complicated relationship. Too often on tv, relationships between parents and children are often depicted as either BFFs or mortal enemies. I think that Mare and her mom have a much more realistic relationship. They love each other but they don't always like each other and they can be really mean to each other. Anyway, her only mistake this week was not calling/texting Siobhan right away to let her know that Becca was at the house waiting for her. It seemed weird to me that Becca said Siobhan had texted her ex to say she was out shopping and was on her way home. If I had just dumped someone, I wouldn't be telling them stuff like that.

Deacon Mark continues to look shady as fuck.

I was undecided about Siobhan's new girlfriend but after she told her she didn't need to pick a college close to home in the hope of keeping her family from falling apart, I decided to like her.

OMG Katie is alive! I wonder why her captor decided to add another girl to his collection. Was there a second girl with Katie who he killed and he's replacing her with Missy? Or is he planning to kill Katie? Poor Katie has been locked up in that room for over a year.

This episode didn't really do it for me - too much of a potpourri, and this is also when the amount of red herrings reveals itself. I know red herrings are a necessary evil on this kind of show but now it's hard to tell red herrings from the general texture of the community they're trying to establish. (The mechanics and staging of the Dawn/Freddie incident were a little wonky too - to the point I thought this episode had had a different director, but I think it was the same as usual.)

All I could think of is who would tell Dawn where Katie was without getting the money first. Those scenes were not on par with the rest of the show.

Right? Just the shot of Dawn driving was really prosaic from a visual POV, and then him perfectly framed (and lighted) in that window where she could see him? Not their best work.

My heart broke into 20 million pieces for Dawn.  I am guessing that incident might harden her to think her daughter is gone for good, or to not believe it if Katie were to gain access to communication and try to call her mother.  That was such an awful scene to watch, especially knowing how weak and sickly she is because of her radiation treatments.

I feel like this episode was very centered on the parent/child dynamic that is so fundamental to who we are, how we're raised, how we turn out.  Dylan and his parents with his not/son, Mare and her mother and her daughter, Mare and her son, Erin's friend and her mother, Carrie and her son, Colin and his mom.  Dawn and the ghost of Katie.  Mare's friend and her son.  I found all of them compelling and real.  With the exception of Dylan and his parents.  I feel like it's a stretch that they raised such a shit.  Maybe a kid with a big mouth but that cowed to authority, but not this piece of shit.

That was adorable lol. I'd date him if I was Mare lol. Speaking of Colin I'm glad we saw it wasn't him who planted the drugs. I never thought he did it anyway.

Dylan continues to suck. I still don't care about Siobhan or her relationship issues. I feel like it takes time away from other important characters. I guess it gives more drama for Mare lol. I was thinking Richard might wrote a book about her or the Investigation.

Happy Katie is alive and hopefully she sees her Mother again. Interesting Missy and Katie are being held captive but Erin was killed.

I was hollering at the tv for her to text Siobhan. As to Becca claiming that Siobhan texted her...that felt like a spur of the moment lie she told Siobhan's grandmother so that she could stay at the house and wait for Siobhan. Jean Smart's character was clearly trying to edge her out the door and Becca wanted to stay and see Siobhan.

A slower, building kind of episode, which I was enjoying just for all the character interactions. And then those last tense 15 minutes. Got me all riled up and conspiracy-brainstorming again. My theory now is that the kidnappings and death of Erin are two unrelated things. Probably wrong, but still thinking it might have been a woman who killed Erin. And based on the long look Erin's friend, name is escaping me, gave out the window after she told Mare about the journals, I'm wondering if she was involved.

Sometimes perfectly nice, normal parents end up with an asshole kid. I've seen it happen in real life (it's even more of an anomaly when said asshole also has nice siblings). Not every murderer/rapist/violent criminal had abusive parents. Some of them came from regular families (not that I'm saying Dylan is definitely a murderer).

True. Still, in my experience, while I've seen kind, loving parents raise kids who messed up, got addicted, etc., I've never known such parents to raise children with no empathy at all. And I'm old, so I've seen a lot. My experience has been that in these cases there's almost always stuff going on behind the scenes that most people aren't seeing.

That said, I have an open mind. Anything is possible and there's no accounting for the effects of genetics, drugs, etc. And possibly, in this case, bad writing. "I'm sorry, Your Honor. My son isn't evil. He's just badly written." 😁

This is one of those episodes where you just end up feeling really sad for a whole lot of people for the whole episode Especially Dawn, I cant even blame her for falling for such an obvious scam, she was just so desperate for her daughter to be alive and then she had that hope ripped out from under her. Of course now we know that Katie actually is still alive, so we can hope that she manages to get out of this alive and be reunited with her mom. We also get some flashbacks to Mare's son and how bad things got when he was losing it on drugs, its really hard to watch. Mare did a terrible thing setting up Carrie, but I can understand her not wanting to hand Drew over to her, seeing what she was like while on drugs. I continue to really love Kate in this show, Mare is prickly and makes some pretty bad choices, but you can understand why she does what she does, and behind her prickly exterior you can see so much hurt and regret underneath.

I am guessing that Dawn lied about the scam either because she was embarrassed that she fell for it, and to spare Beth the hurt of knowing what her brother did. Probably both, and that is seemingly a theme of the show, why people hide things from each other. Just in this episode we see Siobhan lying about why she dumped her girlfriend, we find out that Erin lied about who her baby daddy was because she wanted her son to have nice grandparents, we saw more of how the department is lying about the reason Mare was taken off the case, in flashbacks Mare's son accused her of lying about not having money for his drugs, Mare obviously setting up Carrie, Beth's brother trying to scam Dawn by claiming to know where Katie is, Erin's secret possible job as an escort and her friend helping her cover it up even after she died, the priest possibly lying about what happened at his last parish, even Mare possibly lying to herself about therapy being useless to her, you have big lies, little lies, lies of omission, lies made with good intentions or bad, there is a lot being unsaid in this town.

I hope that Katie and the other girl can make it out, and while this does confirm that there is some kind of serial kidnapper/killer, I still suspect that Erin's death might end up being unconnected. I guess its possible that he tried to kidnap Erin and she fought back and he killed her, but the cases just seem different, even if we found out that Erin was considering prostitution to make some quick money. Maybe just because there are just so many suspicious people revolving around Erin, it seems like too much for them ALL to be red herrings.

I really like Colin, he's so sweet and awkward while also staying competent and dedicated to his work, but that makes me nervous. I really hope that he isn't the killer/kidnapper. His interactions with Mare are some of the few light moments on this show that we get.

Thank goodness for Jean Smart, who's snark is here to lighten the mood in the midst of all the unrelenting sadness. Loved her ice cream veggies and her reaction to Mare planting drugs on Carrie. "Am I not maimed enough for you?"

Although, none of this explains how he could watch his ex being beaten by his new woman without empathy so..... you got me there.

This is a good point. I suspect Mare shielded Siobhan from some of what her brother became because of his addiction, so she holds onto this noble idea of him that her documentary celebrates and that makes her think Mare was cold and unfeeling to him, but Mare would rather take the brunt of that than destroy Siobhan's idea of him. (I could be wrong but surely Siobhan doesn't know about the theft and how ugly he was to his mother.)

That flashback was horrific and it looks as if Mare has taken the brunt of this abuse more so than anyone else. I'm wondering what Mare's ex (Frank?) was doing and how it affected him while all this was going on. After-all he was the father of the abuser and doesn't seem to be having any difficulty dealing with the past.

The flashback definitely sheds some light on why Mare is what she is and how she acts.  I wonder what she was like before the son's addiction/abuse/suicide.

I thought it strange that in an earlier episode she had horrible feelings of guilt that led her to tears because she was withholding the big secret that Dylan was not the father. Now we find she pretty comfortably withholds other important info, until it's pried out of her, such as the setting up the prostitution web page, and what the heck ever else related to that. Like you indicate, her silent communication seems to imply there's more.

I don't think Becca was telling the truth, and she was all I don't wanna loser her after admitting Siobhan broke up with her, there is no way Siobhan is stupid enough to have texted her anything about meeting her and then brought her new hook up to the house. I wanted to like Becca but not respecting boundaries is a red flag. I am baffled why Siobhan lied to gramma and I loved that gramma new what was up immediately (is there someone new?) Easttown is full of really fucking compulsive and bad liars.

I still think the guy who has Katie/the other girl is not the same person who killed Erin. Even if Erin put up more of a fight I see no reason to display her body out in the open to draw even more attention to his activities, bringing more heat to him isn't something he'd want.

I was sad for Dawn, but I think it helped her realize how many false alleys you can go down while trying to find someone and that with or without a lot of resources solving some crimes can be almost impossible. It was probably a bit of embarrasment and empathy that led her not tell Bethy about Jimmy's scam-attack.

I mean, I mostly agree, Dylan is a PoS, but he's also 17 years old and do think he's redeemably as a human, even if not maybe as a father.  And I think it's clear he's kind of a PoS because his parents don't hold him accountable for anything and cover for him when he fucks up.

Carrie's trying but is she redeemable?  She asks Mare to give her a chance but is she going to permanently rip Drew away from her grandmother, whom he's clearly bonded to?

This chick is so far from "making amends" it's a star in another universe. Until she acknowledges the hurt and damage both she and Kevin did to Mare's life there is no reason for Mare to "give her a break".
