S15.E08: Can I Light You Up?

Recommended Posts

I would love to know if Mariah is a student at the University of Utah and if Dayton is a student anywhere? I know these shows were filmed about a year ago but was just wondering especially about Dayton because his acceptance at the University of Northern Arizona was the reason for the move despite what Kody says.

Considering how often they move it seems like Kody is too restless to stay settled anywhere for very long and/or is such a grifter that he cannot afford to stay.  ( There was a rental near us when I grew up, and a grifter family moved in and after a few months they packed up in the dead of night only to disappear and leave the landlord stuck with loss of rent plus needing to clean-up the place before he could rent it)

I think the move on behalf of Dayton is a cover story because I think that they could no longer afford to live in the cul-de-sac which is very unfortunate for everyone involved as it allowed the kids to see each other, but the bio families also had their own space.  The younger kids seem to enjoy playing together in the backyard and in the street.  I also wonder if the neighbors got sick of them--especially the filming---or the HOA raised its dues.

I thought about your grifter theory and though this may have been so in the past, yet I doubt it is the case now. They are semi-celebrities and all over the internet, so no chance of escaping in the middle of the night and starting with a clean slate hundreds of miles away. Everyone will know about him, his horribly financial situation and strange dysfunctioning family, no matter where they'll go. I do agree with your theory on the very expensive houses in LV and that they could no longer afford it. Why else would they leave such an ideal situation with those beautiful houses?

Which leaves the very interesting question "Why does Kody feel the need to uproot his family every few years?"  I think Lehi came closest to his ideals about living arrangements and Utah is the state he wants to be. For whatever reason he cannot be in Utah, and the wives do not want to have a big plyg-palace. So he has condemned himself and his family to wander the United States whilst waiting for a sign from God on what to do, where to settle  and quite possibly praying for God to knock some sense into his wives, so they'll finally accept plyg-palace...

This makes me a bit sad for Dayton.  So much pressure on this poor kid.

It's stressful enough just to be starting college.  But then having your entire, ginormous family uprooted to move to the place where you were accepted to college?  With at least some of the kids absolutely NOT wanting to move?  Plus your helicopter mama and sisters worrying and having panic attacks all around you.  No wonder this school didn't work out for him with this absolute circus following him around.  I hope the other kids don't blame him.

Okay, Sexual harassment? Really??? Wow!

Yes, really.  That’s what uninvited comments about physical contact consists of and the harassment is the person not taking a hint or stopping the behavior.

Meri kept at Kody, he clearly doesn’t want to romantically touch her and she threatened him with a kiss. If this had been a man doing it to a woman, people would have been screaming at the man. Meri absolutely was harassing Kody.

So attempting to seduce your "husband" on your anniversary is sexual harassment? Maybe she is attempting to reignite,

Sexual harassment requires an inequality of power, or some consequences if one doesn't submit to the sexual advances (eg. harassment by a coworker makes your work environment untenable; your employer is obligated to make it stop).   Simple (bad, obnoxious, even crude) "flirting" isn't harassment unless there is unwanted touching.  People are allowed to be assholes.

I agree, swap the gender and it is perceived quite differently.  They are not married, in reality they are very much estranged.  It might as well be a stranger attempting to make physical contact with another.  If a former boyfriend with whom I had a falling out approached me in that fashion I would definitely look askance.

They will absolutely blame him.  At some point in time, they will blame their parents but until then, they will blame him.  Isn't he somewhere on the ASD?

Kody moved a bunch of fully functioning, thriving children with successful educational paths to accommodate him.  Think about that for a minute.  The kid dropped out of NAU in (I guess) a special program to accommodate him.

This family is pathetic.

Depends on how you define "together".  They were divorced several years ago, they have not lived together for even longer.   They rarely see each other and she has a residence in another state.  They get together for filming but there is little evidence that they see each other at any other time.

I see my neighbor more that that.

I don't rilly think of them as "grifters" in the sense that the people we knew were, but I do see Kody running a shell game of sorts in which he constantly is robbing Peter to pay Paul and uses Robyn's mansionette as a credit card.  I have the impression that because they lived above their means in LV,  they are doing the same in Flagstaff although Janelle and Christine have had to downsize.  If they had bought houses in Vegas that were the equivalent of the rentals they had there, they might still be in LV.

I'm not sure if Day'un was matriculating there during this season's filming, because I don't keep close track.

Gabe said that his classes resumed socially-distanced last week (which was quite fast, given that it was mid-April).  If Day'un was attending NAU at that time, Robyn would have to banish him from their home or modify her strict quarantine rules.

I feel bad for both Gabe and Day'un, in that NAU was their beacon, but the "Coron-apocalypse" trapped them with their hand-wringing mothers (and Kody in Day'un's case).  Day'un's mostly been in the background this season - but maybe he finished the fall semester.  However, the show hasn't accounted for how quarantine has impacted his day-to-day.

I think this conversation was actually filmed in the fall and was a recreation of what was said in the spring.  It looked like Janelle had ripe tomatoes in her yard at the time.  Or else they showed the tomatoes right before the conversation.  It was odd and I was screaming at the tv that no one has ripe tomatoes in Flagstaff that early in the spring.  Even here in the warm southeast the earliest they are planted is usually around April 15th or a little later because of the concern about a late frost aka the "Easter freeze."

The point here is that Meri can’t take a hint even though Kody is squirming away. She is making him uncomfortable and doesn’t seem to care, as long as SHE gets what she wants.

And can one most certainly be harassed without being touched. Verbal harassment is considered a form and, having worked for the federal government, we had to take that training every year. I had this stuff drilled into my head for over a decade.

I have my doubts that Dayton finished one year at NAU. As far as Meri being guilty of sexually harassing Kody please. These two have been together for what 30 years, married for many of these years and have a child together. She might be guilty of flirting and begging for attention but sexual harassment?  That's a real stretch.

But this is not a work situation with a supervisor harassing a subordinate. She did not assault him. Flirting and begging for a kiss is not harassment in a social situation.

Any thoughts on the dramatic increase in the reality of Kody this season, especially this episode?

He really appears to be losing his grip, ie. the beady eyed rant in the car was quite the performance. The acknowledged anxiety walking into Janelle's and how uncomfortable he seemed with Gabe, Garrison, Savannah. The obvious indifference to Christine and the girl's when they dropped off birthday presents. And all things Meri.

It appears to me to be authentic, and so out of character from his usual over the top ADHD performances. So I wonder, why now? Covid lockdowns, filming themselves, producer "ramp it up or be cancelled" stress, or the realization he's lost control and nothing is working like he "planned" and The Principle isn't doing what it promised. He's such a diva, I would think he'd maintain his composure to look good, even as his Family Titanic goes over the edge of the Grand Canyon.

I think a big part of Kody's problem is with his kids. He is so immature. He had a better relationship and enjoyed their company when they were younger. It takes a different attitude to have a relationship with teens and older kids vs the younguns, you need to be interested and authentic. His grown kids are now more mature than he is, has his number,  don't adore him any longer, and he can't relate. He seemed very uncomfortable and hostile talking to and about Gabe and Garrison, and his glomming on to young Sol.

I think this ridiculous Flagstaff move 100% didn't work out according to the plan in his head and the wuss that he is wants to take the easy way out. Blame the women. If he can bully and demean Meri and Christine to the point they will leave him, he will be happy. The heats off him-he didn't ask them to leave. He'd be fine with Robyn and Janelle.

Was this a result of the Covid surprise, would it happened anyway, or without the lockdowns and mixed messages we all lived with, would they have been able cover up the devolve and continue giving us the shallow show of seasons past?

Like Gabe, my son is an NAU student. Classes resumed part online, part in person, in early August. The campus itself is pretty strict in terms of social distancing, marking etc. Students have been disciplined for before visiting friends in a dorm they don't live in, marks are required on campus, no large events, for example.  Random testing is mandatory.

Life off campus is far different. Off campus, there are large student parties, just like many of us experienced when we were in college. The parties are getting larger as the months go on. My son reports there are fewer parties than before the pandemic but the parties are much larger. Typical parties are over 200 and there are many parties on any given weekend.  The police are called for noise, not to enforce any type of COVID restrictions. No masks, no distancing. Most students have had COVID. This is reality of college life. The same is happening at ASU in Tempe. I don't know if Gabe attends parties like this, but I would not be surprised. There was no official spring break this year, but many students went to Mexico,  California,  Miami,  Colorado, Nevada and other popular vacation spots for an unofficial spring break. After joining in the protests in June with no consequences or serious illness,  students largely decided parties were okay.

Kody is a fool if he thinks he is protecting his family by only going to Robin's and Christine's. These same students who are partying all weekend, no distancing, no masks, are the same people serving his food, delivering his pizzas, Amazon purchases and groceries, etc. Nope, COVID is just another excuse for ignoring is kids and being a shitty parent.

He is actually beginning to look like Charles Manson minus the swastika on the forehead.   I have binge watched nearly 12 seasons and seeing them all crammed together makes me realize how often he has seemed unhinged in the past and how unhappy all the wives have been.

I am sure he wants to shake Meri off, but the catfishery probably bought them at least three seasons.  He needs to have Janelle hang around so he can go chill with her; staying friendly with Janelle results in his seeing Maddie, but more especially keeps him connected with Caleb.  Christine is next on the chopping block, but he will force himself to stick around with her until Truely goes to college or gets married.  I think even Robyn is tiring of him, but he will stay with her because of Solomon.  I think he is tired of his life and is worried that TLC will go away which will probably collapse his financial house of cards which will alienate Robyn and Aurora.   I think he has nightmares about the show being cancelled.  They supposedly did the show to demonstrate a happy polyg home, but the result is that the viewers see that it just didn't work for the Brownies.

No means no, period, especially in an “ex” situation. If I was trying to move on and the guy kept doing that to me, he’d get a warning and if it wasn’t heeded, a good punch.

But anyways. Moving on.

Well, TLC have not been able to be around them this season, have they? That probably means that the producers will have to make do with what the Browns film.  Kody loves to be the center of attention so obviously he is in a lot of footage (quite often filming himself from what I can see). I'm sure TLC is pleased with the amount of drama Kody produces on his own.

I also suspect that the crew, when present, give a lot of directions on how to move, what to say and maybe do a certain take specifically for the show. Without that, we're basically stuck with a lot of amateur filming....

TBH the entire thing looked almost scripted. Kody and Meri are playing roles for the audiences benefit. I'm sure there's a hint of truth in there somewhere but it's not just Meri who is calculating the moves to elicit responses from the public.

If my understanding is correct (though it couldn't possibly apply to this bunch), these families fly under the radar by getting paid under the table and never incurring any income so no taxes are ever paid.  Now, TLC is paying this bunch, but I don't know how the finances are being handled.

Ack!! I meant to shrink the quote box, but it wouldn't.    Kody has always been a huge ham, but he is getting more frenzied and crazed this season than in the past so he is beginning to match Manson's crazed look, too,

I used to think the scenes with Meri and Kody skiing were sweet, but she was injured.  When it first aired, I wondered why he didn't just give her skiing lessons first  (I think maybe this was an anniversary outing?).   Looking back, I am beginning to wonder if he was hoping she would ski into a tree and get killed as it seemed  irresponsible since he didn't seem to be a very good skier himself and was a very ineffective ski instructor for her. 😝 😜

I think Kody is a mess, but I don’t think he was plotting any Dateline or Fatal Vows scenarios.  I honestly think that whole thing consisted of a few things, unless it benefits him (or Robyn) in someway Kody seems really cheap, so since TLC probably wasn’t paying for actual ski lessons, Kody wasn’t going to pay for them either.  Also, I think Kody really thinks he’s great at everything.  I really think he thinks he is a great instructor whether it be skiing, bike-riding, unhooking the sewage hose on an RV, Kody thinks he’s a master of everything.

On the flip side, if Meri really wanted lessons, she would have demanded them and the money would have been taken out of Christine’s and/or Janelle’s budgets because if it were up to her she would have needed ski lessons for all her spirit children that didn’t choose her.

Lastly, sometimes TLC/the production company are just assholes that think it makes good tv for non-skilled people to be on skis....see Whitney Way Thore plod her fat ass around on skis and basically crash facedown without actually moving.  I think everybody knew Meri would fall some, but didn’t expect her to get hurt to the extent she did.

I dislike Kootie immensely, but for all intents and purposes he has told Meri both verbally and in action and deeds that it's over.  He and Robyn most likely have often discussed this situation throughout the years. That sadiversery convo at the roadside pullover was actually Robyn talking to Meri, and it was just a bunch of jibber jabber to soothe feelings and assuage consciousness' of all involved.

As for Meri, she won't budge until she's got whatever she wants from Kootie, first, whether it's winning a longstanding battle with him, the TLC money runs out , or looking like the most injured party in the public eye.  Meri's "init" to win it, and will not even be ostricized out of their vicinity until she's good and ready.

This, along with her masterful use of her so-called "indecisiveness" to maintain control and power over a situation are her worst character flaws.  She played this game with Kootie during the invitro fertilization event to the point where I FELT BAD for Kootie, and that's saying something.  Finally, after a couple of years went by an exasperated Kootie made the decision for her, and she ran crying to Robyn.  What a sham she is, and I'm beginning to understand why Kootie's fed up with her.  I can't imagine putting up with those behaviors for 30 years.

Kootie and Meri are almost as bad as Robyn, but not quite.  Meri initially thought Robyn was another Christine or Janelle, but Robyn was in a different league altogether, and so she them played both.  On some level it must be so soul-satisfying to Janelle and Christine to watch the implosion.

This was another example of Meri utilizing Robyn to get what she wanted from Kody...if you can't beat them, enlist them.

It brings to mind the time when they were attending the graduation ceremonies for 2 or  3 of the older kids.  Meri was near hysterics when she didn't feel her seat was the most advantageous to view Mariah "walking" and she ran to Robyn wailing, who in turn, convinced Kody that the entire group of 20 or more should move to accommodate Meri.  Anyone else would have quietly excused themselves and positioned themselves to a seat that would give them a better view of the procession.  Possibly the other moms lost their viewing advantage in the shuffle, but that didn't seem to even enter Meri's head.  There was no reason whatsoever that she couldn't seat herself alone without forcing everyone else to scramble for 20 seats where they could all have a full view.

Jenelle's Flag house looks small and dated. Christine's slightly bigger, but a real step down from the McMansions in LV. And Robyn's looks updated and huge. I hate Kody. To answer your question, all of these women would be better off without you.

I was not caffeinated when I wrote that and I have gone back and put emojis that I hope indicate that the comments are tongue in cheek.  I think they actually were having fun until she got hurt.

I wondered..sorry English is not my first language some sometimes I read things literally.  Plus I wasn’t sure since we’ve been equating him to Charles Manson (who he really does look like) LOL in the thread.

If I recall, Meri almost missed getting her pic of the key moment while disrupting not just her entire fambly, but other parents seated behind their old and new spots in the auditorium.

Well, Janelle missed seeing Logan actually graduate the year before because she was concerned about getting his picture, I think.  I don't know if they do it at high school graduations, but I know at my law school graduation there was a photographer who took everyone's picture as we were handed the diploma.

Aspyn was also graduating so maybe everyone benefited from the move.  If Meri could see Mariah better in the processional then I would think it would be better viewing of Aspen for Christine.

Now I have "Land of Hope and Glory" singing in my brain.   Oh, well.   Maybe I will tell myself it is in memory of Prince Philip.
