‘True Lies’ CBS Pilot Based On Movie Pushed To Off-Cycle

Quote

True Lies, a TV series adaptation of James Cameron’s hit 1994 action comedy movie, has hit the pause button. CBS, which ordered a pilot for the project last month, is rolling the pilot to off-cycle. It now is targeting a summer shoot.

This was the only new drama pilot CBS ordered this pilot season, and the pickup came relatively late, on February 10.

CBS Unveils Its 2022-2023 Primetime Lineup

Quote

TRUE LIES, inspired by James Cameron's hit action/comedy film of the same name, follows Harry (Steve Howey), a first-class international spy for U.S. intelligence agency Omega Sector, and his wife, Helen (Ginger Gonzaga), a language professor bored with her daily routine, who makes the shocking discovery that her seemingly ordinary husband is leading an extraordinary double life. With the secret out, Omega recruits Helen, who impresses everyone with her formidable skills (thanks to Tae Bo and yoga), and she joins Harry and his team of top-notch operatives, embarking on covert missions around the globe and an exhilarating life of danger and adventure. The renewed bond between them adds much-needed sizzle to the Taskers' emotionally distant marriage and upends the top-secret world of Omega Sector. But, as Harry says, if you're going to save the world, you might as well do it for the ones you love.

TRUE LIES stars Steve Howey as Harry, Ginger Gonzaga as Helen, Erica Hernandez as Maria, Omar Miller as Gib, Mike O'Gorman as Luther, Annabella Didion as Dana, and Lucas Jaye as Jake. Matt Nix, James Cameron, Rae Sanchini, McG, Mary Viola, Corey Marsh and Josh Levy are executive producers. Anthony Hemingway is an executive producer and directed the pilot from a script by Nix. Sean Hoagland and Whitney Davis are co-executive producers. The series is produced by 20th Television.

From the trailer this looks worth checking out; I'm not sold on the spy husband yet, though.

The Special Preview Premiere on Thursday, February 23, 2023 has been cancelled. True Lies will now premiere on Wednesday, March 1, 2023 at 10pm on CBS.

That and a late start date doesn’t bode well for this show. CBS shows that start in the Spring don’t typically get renewed

Pretty much. 😕

I'm still interested in at least seeing if this is good, though. I'm all for another action/rom-com.

The True Lies TV Series is based on the 1994 film "True Lies", starring Arnold Schwarzengger, Jamie Lee Curtis, Tom Arnold, Art Malik and Bill Paxton, which was based on the 1991 French comedy film "La Totale".

An unremarkable suburban homemaker who discovers her unremarkable computer-consultant husband leads a remarkable double life as an international spy. The reveal of the this shocking secret puts Helen, Harry, and their kids in grave jeopardy, forcing Helen to work alongside Harry on his missions. The anything-but-unremarkable adventure that ensues shakes up the Tasker’s marriage as it shakes up the international world of espionage.

Ginger Gonzaga as Helen Tasker, a linguistics professor. As Harry’s supportive wife and mother of two teenage kids, Dana and Jake. Helen is becoming annoyed by Harry’s constant business trips away from home. Her anger increases as she feels she is been robbed of the life she had envisioned for herself. Perhaps this romantic trip to Paris can change things.

Beverly D'Angelo as Trilby, Director of the Spy Agency, Omega Sector.

Mike O'Gorman as Luther, an undercover operative who works with Harry at Omega Sector. Smoothly confident with a dry wit, he’s good at his job, despite having some tension between himself and fellow operative, Maria. Luther believes that Harry being married might cause some issues, that’s why operatives, should remain single. Luther poses as a computer salesman.

Erica Hernandez as Maria, an operative working with Harry, tough, capable, cool-headed, a first class spy. She never misses a chance to get in a dig at Luther’s expense, reminding him of something that went down between them while on a mission in Berlin.

Omar Miller as Gib, the logistics guy for the group. It’s his job to make sure everyone knows their duties and the missions go smoothly. Dry-witted but all business.

"The show starts in a very similar place. Harry and Helen are an ordinary-seeming suburban couple. He’s a computer salesman who is secretly a spy, and she is  a little bored with her life and looking for some adventure. They wind up on a spy adventure where a lot of secrets come out, challenging and ultimately strengthening their relationship. The story isn’t exactly the same, of course," he wrote over email. "The adventure’s in a different place, the bad guys are very different and a big part of the show is Helen’s discovery that she has some skills that are surprisingly useful in the world of espionage. The show winds up focusing more on their partnership after Helen is brought into Omega Sector as a spy, and how that affects their relationship. So I’d say it’s different, but I’m confident that fans of the film will recognize that the series was made by fellow fans."

Renewal odds seem to be pretty bad since the ratings for this are totally in the toilet.  I still think they took the wrong premise with this.  They should have brought Eliza Dushku back as Dana as an agent following in her dad’s footsteps and then they would have dealt with her husband and family.

‘True Lies’ Lands Third-Largest CBS Premiere of the Season on Paramount+ (EXCLUSIVE)

Midseason CBS drama “True Lies” has been a solid early performer in both TV ratings and streaming viewership.

Ahead of “True Lies” are the premieres for the second season of comedy powerhouse “Ghosts,” which sits at No. 1 on the list of CBS’ streaming debuts of the 2022-2023 season, and freshman drama “Fire Country.”

Debuting on CBS March 1, the first season of “True Lies” is averaging 4.6 million total linear viewers across its first four weeks, based on the “most current” data stream from Nielsen, which includes a week’s worth of delayed viewing where available. With two weeks of (mostly DVR) playback, the “True Lies” premiere episode has risen to 5.73 million viewers, up 77% from the episode’s Live + Same Day audience.

With the addition of “True Lies,” CBS now has four of broadcast TV’s top six new dramas season-to-date: “Fire Country” (averaging 8.5 million total viewers), “East New York” (6.7 million), “So Help Me Todd” (6.4 million), and “True Lies” (4.6 million). Rounding out the Top 6 are ABC’s “Will Trent” (5.2 million) and “Alaska Daily” (5 million) in fourth and fifth place, just ahead of “True Lies.” The rest of the list is as follows: Fox’s “Accused” (4.2 million), ABC’s “The Rookie: Feds” (4.1 million), NBC’s “Quantum Leap” (3.82 million), and Fox’s “Alert: Missing Persons Unit” (3.8 million).

It's no real surprise the shows been cancelled,  its just got worse as the weeks went on. I think the problem was the poor casting, and the fondness people had of the original film.
