Man that Cold Open was choppy as hell with all the technical gaffes with the camera starting it off. Aidy was the only saving grace.

Oh good - it wasn't just me thinking the whole thing seemed a bit...off..

Or me being a bit off...

Cold open:  “For those of you who want something different than the Puppy Bowl on Hallmark, the Hallmark Channel is also offering a movie about a woman who married her cat.”

”And here’s a twist: the cat turns out to be Santa’s son.”

Let me tell you:  this is peak, peak Hallmark Channel content.

(Spoken as someone who spends six months of the year avoiding the Hallmark Christmas season.)

I could really use one of Vanessa Bayer's "All My Hungry Guys" sketches that always aired before the Superbowl. I'm still missing them all these years later, and that sketch would help this episode.

This show picked up steam as it went along. I thought both the Cold Open and Tour Guide sketch were horrible, and I had a hard time getting into it. But it did indeed get better. Update was on fire.

Cold Open: Super Bowl sketch! Between captions being off timing, shots seen early, the graphics department must've left early to beat the snow tomorrow. I thought they were advertising the wrong Super Bowl, too, but no, the graphic is just confusing. It's LV, but the logo made me think it's LIV.

Oh my god, I was dying at the ads, especially the Pizzagate-filled Papa John's one. I also loved the meta humor of Aidy playing both coaches. "Wet Ass Pepsi" slayed me. This was a very refreshing cold open.

Monologue: So weird to know that Eugene Levy never hosted (was his cameo a surprise?! Probably not, but Dan definitely sold the surprise) Also, this is apparently the 900th episode. Dan was bringing great energy here. Loved the backstage tour. Also, we had a Llama sighting, with Kenan and the bubbled up showgirls. It was fake, but good to know they had it in.

Universal Studios: Thoby definitely brought a great energy to this sketch, but that only went so far. Not much of this did much for me, but of course Thoby and the Gru knew each other.

"Goofy-doos don't get slick for me." There's a sentence.

Zillow: Sexually attracted to scrolling through Zillow listings. Yep, that's my timeline these days. Genius.

Super Bowl Party: "We're doing everything right!" Quarantine Fatigue is a real thing, and why we're not getting out of this anytime soon. God, I loved this, especially everything about the chili. And then Kate as RudyDr. Fauci and Psy showed up and I thought "well, why the hell not at this point?" Also, this was the same set as the insurrectionist sketch from last week, I was expecting the FBI to show up to arrest everyone the second they took off their masks.

Lifting Our Voices: Ooh, sketch about white allies, but the choice of the whitesplaining allies were perfect. Aidy, Kyle that definitely hates white women (and Ego loved his money), and Dan as the ally that goes to BLM protests and has a John Lewis tattoo that's actually of Al Roker.

WU: "Mugshot of a former child actor" perfectly described Marjorie Taylor Greene. Che had NO chill tonight, and I certainly loved it. And the ONLY way they could've covered the Morgan Wallen thing was to continue the bit of learning it from Colin. The people cancelling the kids was great. They definitely had that Jebediah Atkinson vibe to them, I hope they come back. I don't know who The Twins are, but loved their bit. I thought them loving the Meow Mix jingle was great ("I didn't know cats could get happy like that!"), but them not liking the actual theme song was the perfect capper to it. Yep, too much sax.

Hot Damn: Dan and Cecily finally get to sing! Kenan reacting to everything was just guaranteed laughs.

Wedding: This was a weird one. Weird in tone, really. Dan and Kate were doing their best, but it was really awkward and didn't exactly know what they were going for.

It Gets Better: As someone in his thirties...yeah, it DOES get better, but life is still life and it sucks. I liked this one. Kate with the Iguana? Great.

Dan Levy certainly brought some chaotic energy to the show tonight, and it definitely elevated the material. I was hoping for more Eugene Levy besides the cameo, but hell, I'll take it.

What a wonderful thing that SNL could do this 12:55 sketch about being LGBTQ+ starring 3 gay castmembers and a gay host.  2021!

Thank you.  I went back to watch it again to figure it out.  Bowen's faces of ecstasy!  hahahahahha!

Twins the New Trend was dead on and cracked me up. I liked those twins IRL when they started, but after awhile it did get ridiculous. Che and Jost had a lot of good moments.

Liked the Zillow ad, usually love Dan Levy and admired his energy, but overall I didn't really find much that made me laugh tonight. I would've liked the Super Bowl friends hanging out, but that theme of people actually breaking all the rules is too played out by now.

I enjoyed this episode. Do they have new writers? EIther that, or I've just gotten easier to entertain.

Was the musical guest's band out of tune or is that sound on purpose?

Material B- or C+

How did that wedding sketch make it to air?

Was anyone else afraid that Phoebe’s sparking guitar or monitor was going to start a fire?

That's how I felt about these last two shows. The hosts? Killed it, and I hope they come back. The material...not so much. Dan definitely saved a bunch of sketches thanks to the energy he brought to them.

I didn’t like either. At least I understood the premise of the tour guide sketch. I wasn’t even sure what they were going for in the wedding sketch, but that could just be me not getting it.

It helps if you put Kristen Wiig and Fred Armisen in the place of Kate and Dan. That was the exact type of vaguely improv-ish, messy piece they would have done.

I know some people were missing tonight, but I can't think of who they are other than Chloe and Pete. I can't remember her name, but the Aidy 2.0---was she on tonight? Was Dismukes in anything other than the tour guide sketch? I think Melissa was there for a second? I don't know, there's just too large of a cast now.

Lauren was in the goodnights but not in any sketches.

I thought last week managed to balance the cast well. This week just didn't really seem to, sadly (not helped by the continued need to make sure Kate or Cecily or Aidy have a strong role each week). I don't think this cast is going to be so large past this season, but I wish they would use the size more effectively while they still have them.

So Pete fell off the stage on top of Machine Gun Kelly last week during goodbyes, and nobody has seen him since then.

I feel like this needs multiple punchlines.

Cold open: I missed bits of this. Not a bad idea to use a Super Bowl presentation to parody our broken times and corporate cowardice (even if some would point out SNL's hypocrisy). There were a few moments I enjoyed, like the cheap gag with the Budweiser frogs badmouthing Pifzer. Technical glitches aside (don't care tbh), this was overlong, but passable.

Monologue: Dan Levy seems very polished. Good for him! I don't really think it's a good idea for the show to joke about social distancing given the danger of the audience setup, and Aidy's part was not needed, but Dan powered through. Also nice to see Melissa. Most of all I was THRILLED to see Eugene Levy's funny cameo. I am so glad to finally see this comic legend finally appearing on here, 35 years after his aborted hosting gig with the wonderful John Candy. Thank you to Dan for becoming a TV star and setting this in motion.

Tours: A very overfamiliar premise for recent years, so much so that I zoned out a bit, but fun performances, and Dan blended in well with the cast. Andrew Dismukes asking if he has to name his 'softener' was my favorite part.

Zillow: A bit long, but a genuinely funny sendup of the "real estate porn" idea. Another fun cast slate (with Cecily's bit my favorite part, even if we only needed to see her once). Mikey Day's "aroused" face also amused me. Also a reminder of how attractive this cast is.

Party: Most of the sketch was a decent, well-performed look at not taking social distancing seriously (even if, again, it makes the show look somewhat hypocritical). The Fauci ending felt really tacked on, confused, and suggested a lack of faith in the material. I did like the walking-offset bit after that.

Talk show: Once we got past Aidy's "woke" character (not bad, but she has done this to death), the premise began to feel more alive and the performances (especially from Dan and Kyle) shone. (Dan also looked more like Eugene than he usually does to me - must be the hair).

Update #1: They really sped through those jokes, so much so that some of them (like the Biden "doesn't need permission" bit) seemed to go over viewers. Some tough jokes, a few surprising jokes (like the Amazon bit). I was distracted by Colin going for "the messy look."

Update #2: Mikey continues his bigger night than usual of late as he and Heidi debut a new duo. The savaging of "woke" types is NOT new (see Mikey's good "Woke Jeans" pre-tape), but the committed performances from these two, along with their always reliable chemistry, helps. Kudos to Mikey and Heidi for not just trying to recreate their old influencer characters, who had hit their limit. Always good to see people on here who know when to let go. (as an aside, as someone  pointed out to me, Mikey reminded me so much of Taran Killam here).

Update #3: Kenan and Chris promoting their new sitcom (without actually promoting) via a rare duo piece for them. Fun idea, and "reacting" to the SNL theme was kind of sweet, if not really utilized. The Meow Mix bit was the most fun and inspired part.

Bar: Variation of Anderlette (James Anderson/Kent Sublette) "what's that song/Cecily and host CAMP IT OUT!!!". So...yeah. I was pleasantly surprised most of the cast joined in for a dance number, after overusing the reaction parts up to that point, but the direction/blocking felt messy. We saw more of Kenan reacting than we did the performance. Points for trying.

Wedding: Sterling straight woman work from Ego (working her way up to Jane Curtin status), but the Dan and Kate parts felt VERY Kristen Wiig and Fred Armisen to me, which...isn't really to my taste. Kate has felt shoehorned in all night. Weakest of night for me.

It Gets Better: Good premise, helped by all involved being played by gay performers. Dan's strongest showing of the night. Kate's bit about the iguana and her wife in the hospital, along with Bowen's "my family accepts me...but I don't like most of them" were standouts. (and as I've seen a few people point out, Dan was really channeling Johnny Galecki here)

Final: I came into this ep with low expectations, as I wasn't sure how Dan would be and the show is still in the weird place of transitioning while still being stuck in place. I'd say last week was stronger overall, but this week had a few pieces I enjoyed more. A messy night. Some premises felt tired, others had potential but were not well-executed, and others did work well. The pre-tapes were back in solid form, which was nice. Phoebe Bridgers' second performance had a bit of life to it, unlike a lot of sleepy MG performances this season.

I was disappointed - again - at getting nothing of Lauren Holt, who may be the most unshown cast member ever (for people who last a full season) if things don't turn around. It was an MIA night for a fair amount of people, after last week managed to use the whole cast. Dan Levy was a likeable, solid host who fit in well with the cast and didn't have the awkward vibes that I was afraid he might have. He helped make a bit of iffiness here and there flow better, and of course I was thrilled to see Eugene (I think I've already mentioned that...).

So, overall, this is another one I'd probably put at the middle of the pack for the season. Most of S46 has sort of had middle of the pack episodes, with a few good or bad exceptions, so I guess I will just need to get used to that. We'll see next week, with Regina King.

Thrilled to see him, too, especially since as you mention his hosting gig was canceled for reasons behind his control.

I know a lot of hosts refuse to do a sketch based on their most famous work, I guess because they want to show their range, or not be typecast or something. But I was hoping they'd do a Schitt's Creek skit anyway. My niece and I had a bet about which cast members would play which characters. I said I thought they'd have Heidi for Alexis, Kate for Moira and Cecily for Stevie. Wasn't sure about who would play Johnny, but once I saw Eugene I was extra hoping they'd do it. Oh, well. I guess Dan thought it would be too trite and expected.

I liked Kenan and Chris doing those YouTube brothere because I do find myself being surprised at some of the songs they haven't heard.   I also laughed out loud at the "former social media star" descriptor.

I Am A Little Confused ! Did Eugene Host Saturday Night Live OR Did John Candy OR Did They Co Host Saturday Night Live ! OR Are You Talking About SCTV ? Because Cecily And I Think Dan Were Singing AT The Bar, I Thought John Mulaney Wrote That And My Brother Thought That Also ! That Reminded Me Like Sushi AT The Air Port ! Now, When Lesley Was Singing AT Some Body's House, That Might Have Been Anderlette ! There Is A Big Difference Between Made Up Friends Having Parties AND A Guest Has The Corona Virus And Could Actually Make Them Be Sick ! !

The singing and dancing definitely reminded me of Mulaney, but the rest was closer to Anderlette. Apparently it was written by Dan Bulla and Kent Sublette. (James Anderson left the show this past season)

John Candy and Eugene Levy were meant to host in 1985. A strike meant they couldn't.

Cut for time:

(I thought the "man-stain" would end up referencing something else...)

Such a sweet moment:

This episode was better than last week for sure.  I absolutely cackled at Zillow—my favorite celebrity bought a new house and admit I’ve spent plenty of time ogling photos.

I did like tour guide, and loved It gets better.

What is with the cameras being in the wrong place? This has been since last season? Doesn’t SNL win the Emmy for best direction every year? Maybe not this year?

Who or what is Phoebe Bridgers mad at?

Looks like I'm in the minority, but I thought this was a great episode. Dan Levy never seems to do anything half-way, and he gave his all, as expected. I LOLed at the tour guide sketch several times. The inability of Dan's guide in-training to stop himself from saying one inappropriate thing after another was hilarious! The way the bar sketch evolved into a dance number was reminiscent of the numbers that have become a staple of the John Mulaney episodes. Lots of positive energy, and a fun episode all-around.

It appears that they were doing some sort of tribute to the Who. Along with the Townshend guitar smash, the skeleton costumes were identical to the costume John Entwhistle wore on the Who's 1970 tour.

I adore Dan and thought he was effortless the whole night, like he'd been there for years. Wish the writing had been able to keep up with him.

Lot of outdated cultural references here. The YouTube music-reacting twins are still around but their big viral moment was awhile ago. And Psy? They really couldn't think of another way to end that sketch besides a meme that's almost a decade old?

The Zillow sketch is, if they have to rely on product placement, the ideal way to do it, I think. Perhaps I'm splitting hairs, but it felt more like something that a writer would come up with on their own regardless of whether they had a sponsorship deal, as opposed to a brand requesting a sketch and the writers having to figure out a way to work around that. I definitely do my fair share of Zillow ogling, but more so on StreetEasy, which is Zillow but specifically for NYC apartments. There's also a Twitter account that I'm forgetting the name of now that curates the most bizarre Zillow listings, like houses full of taxidermy. Or there was one that had an entire town center in its basement.

Love that video of Eugene watching Dan. Annie Murphy said in an interview once that she loved watching Eugene watch his kids on the monitors when they filmed their scenes for Schitt's Creek. You can tell he's so proud.

I agree, I liked something about every sketch.  The only thing that would have made it better for me is if Nathaniel Rateliff had been the musical guest this week instead of next.  I didn't know who the MG was, but I was very underwhelmed.  I don't think I picked up a distinct sound at all.  Seemed more like a jam session where they kind of all work together and all kind of just do their own thing at the same time.

I was hoping that Dan Levy would show some range, but I don't think he really has any. I loved Schitt's Creek, but seeing him play the same kind of snarky, fey character in every sketch got old for me.

And something felt completely off about Phoebe Bridgers' performances. The sound seemed even worse than usual, and her diction was so poor that she might as well have just been humming. Is that the way she always sings?

I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels that way. SNL is always a target for claims like that no matter how general the idea or reference.

I think Cecily loves that type of sketch. It's right up her alley. That's the main reason there are so many with her specifically.

Quick notes:

  1. Man, Bruce Arians and Andy Reid look alike . . . or at least enough for Aidy to play both in the same sketch.
  2. The Twitter for Child Cancellation Project is real. Nothing posted there, though, and I’m thinking it’ll stay that way. Well, unless that becoming a recurrent bit on WU.
