I think people just don't like change. I think he's done a fine job and I wouldn't say that Ken is heads and shoulders above him, I just think that Ken is more familiar to people

Yes. Cleared. But with the last several questions unanswered.

How does that work? To me, a board is cleared when all the clues are revealed, whether or not the “what is...” response is correct.

Yes, I think we mean the same thing:
I meant that they had time to reveal all of the clues/answers but that several of the last ones were "TS."

Today is International Women's Day, and Katie Couric is making history as the first female jeopardy host.

I got a laugh wondering what all the Dr. Oz haters thought about him saving a man's life at the airport the other day. Say what you will about him, I'd be all for him being at my side if I have a heart attack.

I agree wholeheartedly with this.

I've basically enjoyed all of the guest hosts so far (even though Ken can wear on me at the wrong moment), but I think I'll have to take a hiatus when it's Dr. Oz's turn. No bueno.

And I'm still holding out for Brad, for as long as I can!

But, speaking of Betty White, now that she's 99 (or about to be, momentarily) I'd love to see her host, if only for one episode, just because AT mentioned her. We know she loves game shows and I think that throughout her life she would have been a good host. I certainly can understand her not wanting a permanent gig, but a show or two would be fun.

This is a few months old now, but she DID win an Emmy in 1983 for hosting a short-lived game show called Just Men. I'm pretty certain she was the first woman to win an Emmy for hosting a game show, actually.

I have no idea if this would ever happen, what he would be like, or if he even would be interested, but you know who I would be interested in seeing as a guest host? Chuck Forrest. The Ken Jennings before anyone knew there WAS a Ken Jennings. :D

Katie Couric is not awful.  I don't want her for a permanent host but she has acquitted herself well and does her best to keep things moving along.  One obvious thing was that she clearly had no clue about a lot of the responses she had to read.  I miss Alex seamlessly providing the answer as if he had known it all along.

Awww.
I was thinking it was interesting that Jeopardy appears on all 3 of those networks, depending upon where you are watching --like maybe she was a strategic marketing choice.
Anyway, Katie C. just said Mighty Mouse was a childhood favorite of hers, so if she is chosen as the permanent host, I will be okay with it.
Plus, it's nice to have a woman for a change.
But I also don't think she's been great, so I won't complain if they choose someone else --as long as it's not Oz.

Jeopardy! isn't really on *any* network. It's syndicated to local stations who may be affiliated with national networks.

I don't think these stunt hosts are auditioning. They're just place-holders until a permanent host is chosen.

I guess Katie's coming back next week, as she signed off with "We'll see you next week."

My assumption is that all the guest hosts post-KJ will host for two weeks.  The show has always (or at least for a very long time) filmed five shows a day for two days straight.  Then they take a break and do the same thing in another few weeks.  I guess it would be more disruptive to the producers and crew if they had to bring in a new host for a single week, followed by a week with another new host.

I watched a Jeopardy rerun last night with Alex hosting and it was odd hearing him, like he was being a guest host too. I've gotten used to three other hosts since he died, so now even he seems out of place. That was a strange feeling.

Katie is not horrible, but I don't think everyone who is guest hosting is even in consideration as  permanent host.   I am kind of enjoying the rotations.

I am, too, but I can't watch Katie without thinking of a story told by a friend of mine: He was a guest at a wedding in Connecticut, and he happened to be standing next to the table with the table number place cards while his wife used the restroom. Katie walked up with her escort and barked, "Where are we?" meaning "Which table are we sitting at?" She thought my friend was a waiter! To tease her, he said, "Somewhere in Connecticut." Her escort laughed, but Katie was Not Amused. So it's hard not to see her pleasant onscreen demeanor as fake. I'd still rather watch her than Dr. Oz, though.

Mostly rhetorical questions: Maybe she was embarrassed/humiliated? Did she apologize? Or was it a situation that would have been to awkward even for that?

I hope they continue to match the winnings for pancreatic cancer research. Since Katie’s husband died of colon cancer, after which she had a colonoscopy on live TV to promote early detection, I wondered if it was her idea to donate matched winnings.
I also wonder if it effects the Final Jeopardy wagers ––if they risk all to try to win, they also risk reducing the donated amount.

No, she didn't apologize.

I, OTOH, wanted Katie Couric to do well and finally have to admit she did not do as well as the the 2 guys before her, even though I prefer her articulation to that of Mike Richards.

Today I caught the rerun of the February 14, 2020 game, in which the winner was $1400 in the hole at the start of the second round, but finished at $1800, and although he didn't get FJ (which was a rare instaget for me) he amused Alex and us all with his question of "What is Aleve?" Alex really had mastered the right tone to take when contestants weren't doing so well. I can't recall if Ken Jennings did well with that, but I'd rate Katie Couric as Poor.
I have very low expectations for Oz, but maybe he'll surprise with a decent bedside buzzer-side manner.

Dr. Oz read the clues at a brisk clip, pronounced foreign words and phases well, and we cleared the boards-that’s pretty much all I’m looking for in a Jeopardy host.

I'd prefer a less smarmy face, though.

I guess I have a high bar.  While a game show host doesn't necessarily have to be a role model, I do expect one to at least not be an unethical controversy magnet.

There was an $800 question asked about what title was abolished in 1806.  Nick buzzed in and asked, "What is the Holy Roman Empire?"  Dr. Oz immediately said that he was correct.  Then Nick said that no, he meant "Holy Roman Emperor."  If Alex had been the host, before the contestants started Final Jeopardy, he would have said that $1,600 was being deducted from Nick's winnings because of the incorrect question.  It has happened when Alex hosted.  He later on had to admit that the judges caught that the contestant had added an "S" or said "Wimbleton" instead of "Wimbledon" or something.  But nothing was deducted from Nick's winnings.  I don't know if the judges were afraid of embarrassing Dr. Oz.  I just hoped that Nick's extra $1,600 wouldn't make a difference in the final outcome.  Fortunately, it did not.

Ditto. He didn't piddle around at all.

I know very little about Dr. Oz except what I've read here.  I don't have any real feelings about him one way or the other.

Ugh. I am not going to waste energy right now researching “Dr.” Oz’s charity’s message or activities purporting to teach teens to be healthier; hopefully others are doing that.

I missed last night’s show due to it being preempted by sports, but I read about Oz’s procedural gaffes, which I hope will not reoccur tonight. Even better would be specifying requirements for categories tonight and using that as an opportunity to briefly mention he had neglected to do so on his first night. He doesn’t need to take time in-show to specifically describe the failure to have any initials required for the responses to the category “INITIALLY YOURS.” However, a mea culpa Tweet after tonight’s show would be nice if he references making newbie mistakes during tonight’s show. But from the brief bits I’ve bothered to read online, admitting he was wrong about something is not his style.

Mostly rhetorical question:
Was Oz really Alex’s friend? Or was he more of a hanger-on?

So this happened:

https://medium.com/@j.contestants.letter/a-letter-from-concerned-former-contestants-to-mike-richards-executive-producer-of-jeopardy-f2f8e2e53930

ETA: I should point out here that while this letter is from late February, I only saw news about it for the first time today. Obviously it didn't work, as Dr. Oz's episodes are airing now, but the fact that over 500 former contestants felt compelled to cosign a letter like this protesting the idea of Dr. Oz guest hosting this show, and listing in detail the reasons why they feel this way...kind of says it all, really.

That's on the producers and writers, not Oz; they make the decision on whether the category is going to have any specific requirements, and obviously didn't do so here.

Yikes; no wonder so many people here complained when he was announced as one of the guest hosts!  He did all this:

Quote

Throughout his nearly two decades on television he has used his authority as a doctor to push harmful ideas onto the American public, in stark contrast with his oath to first do no harm. These ideas include promoting supplements that do nothing, legitimizing gay conversion therapy (which is banned in California, as well as 19 other states), dangerous “cures” for autism, and, most recently, the use of hydroxychloroquine as a treatment for COVID-19.

and whoever vetted him thought it would be a good idea to have him be the face of the show for two weeks?!

Come to think of it, didn't he say something in his opening remarks last night about it having been his pleasure to present some clues over the years (meaning he's been on the show before)?

This was a really bad call.

@UYI, I was just coming to post the same thing. Today is the first I've read about the letter. This also mentions it: https://bestlifeonline.com/jeopardy-boycott-dr-oz-news/

I wonder if when the selected run of stunt hosts is over, will they need to choose more? Is there a chance they'd give Sarah or Jimmy ClueCrew a chance at hosting?  Would they even want to try?

I'm pretty sure the guest host slots are full until the end of this season. There is a list somewhere and I'm pretty sure those people will fill out the rest of the season. I don't remember Sarah or Jimmy being on it, but it would be fun if they were. The new permanent host won't be announced until the start of season 38 so we won't know that for a long while yet.

I haven't seen anything about the tournament of champions host though, nor if there will be one, or a college tournament.

I now know Oz was a “friend” of Alex, but I’m wondering if he possibly paid princely sums of cash for the privilege of hosting? It occurred to me today that, just like those who have a lifelong wish to be a contestant on Jeopardy, maybe Oz had a lifelong desire to be the host of Jeopardy, which he was able to fulfill with enough cash.
