S10.E10: Andi's Men Tell All

Who were half those guys? I swear I never saw most of them on the show.

I'm so happy I wasn't there when the woman in the audience was suddenly picked to come to the stage because I would have yelled, FAAAAAKE! And ducked... and been escorted out.

And, finally, I do agree with those poster above that Marquel was being willfully blind if he really thinks that being tarred as a racist (assuming the accusation is false) is just as bad, if not worse, than being shown to have been the target of racism.

Here's where I think YMMV. Because I think that being a victim of racism is way worse than being accused of racism.

On that note Marquel seemed to be pretty clear that JJ was not accusing Andrew of racism. He said Andrew made an ignorant statement and wouldn't own up to it.

And on the whole "blackies" word use. Once I was on the first day of a job and the manager told me that they had never had any negroes work there. I was really taken aback because I had never heard somebody actually speak the word. You just see it in old books. The manager wasn't even old either! And she was not trying to make a racist comment. So it was even more confusing. What I'm trying to say is, there are certain "communities" that use outdated words. They need to be corrected. Unfortunately Andrew just got an education on TV.

Thank you, lonestar for noting Andi's clean cut/long hair preferences.  That is what we noticed and commented here in the riff-raff household.

All and all, a pretty tired MTA episode.  I really think the producers should have left well enough alone with the whole Andrew said/JJ said controversy.  No one came off looking particularly well, and I don't look to the bachelor franchise to frame sensitive cultural and racial issues.

I'm assuming Chris is the next bachelor based on the audience squeal-o-meter.  I'm already dreading  he "farmer Chris" cliches headed our way.   Per my above comment, this show handles cultural issues poorly.

I appreciated Dylan and Brian for steering Andi away from opening Josh's lie detector results. Regardless of whether or not she picked him, I think that would have been a mistake.

It was also a mistake for her to keep wavering on whether or not to hear the results. If it takes you that long to say you trust someone then you really don't. She could have diffused the entire situation (and probably heard the results anyway without repercussions) had she just casually and flippantly said, "Oh whatever, it won't change anything. What's in the stupid envelope?"

As for the letter at the end, I figure it has to be Josh's work, since Nick's probably would have been illustrated and/or bound in some way.

I am meh about Chris. I really *want* to like him since I am a Midwestern girl but he does nothing for me. I don't find him attractive, he has a giant head and I don't think his face is cute. And I find nothing special about his personality. But on the plus side he doesn't bug me. But it looks to me from the Men Tell All show that he is being groomed to be the next bachelor, which means any good will I have for him will most likely disappear when he has his own season.

I wouldn't care about the lie detector results if I were Andi because most of the questions could have been thought about it more than one way. Even a question like how many women have you slept with could have made the guys wonder if someone they did some things with but not all the way counted etc. And asking are you here for the right reason could have more than one answer.

I thought the on-air ultra sound was awful and as one who had multiple ultra sounds during pregnancy, your bladder has to be very full and you are not half sitting up. Seeing Ashley's bare stomach and the fake ultrasound picture was just cringe worthy.

As for Marquel: he is handsome, nice and seems smart. The reason he is in the friend zone is because he is one of these guys who values being quirky and original. Showing up with a cookie lapel pin and odd print mash-ups (not to mention cookies), makes women say aww but not in a romantic way. If he wore a nice suit and forgot about the cookies he would not be in anyone's friend zone. It looks like he continues with his odd fashion choices in Bachelor in Paradise though.

The rest of the show was boring and even though Chris is very handsome, I am getting a weird vibe off him the past couple of episodes like maybe he is not so nice. It is strange because I liked him a lot and disliked Josh and Nick at the beginning and now I think Josh and Nick are great guys and Chris is not.

The funniest part of the night was the repeated shot of some women grabbing her friends hands because she was so excited. Excited about what exactly? Yawn.

What did they give this audience before taping? Booze? Some new mind-altering drug? Or did they all come fresh from a shock treatment session? They looked like they were in some cult - the crazed, glazed eyes, the repeated gasps - one woman looked like she was about to cry in one shot! No doubt that they DID drink the Kool Aid.

Ashley's "reaction" to the ultrasound? Now we know one thing for sure....acting is NOT in your skill sets. Don't quit your day job...whatever that is.

Oh, what people will do to find true love!!!

I love Marquel and thought he came off wonderfully. Was struck by the clip that she kept Cody longer! Although Cody gave me the biggest laugh when Marquel said you needed a one on one date to get a kiss and Cody simply replied, nope. Haha!

Makes me extremely uncomfortable to turn the racism conversation on Marquel. He wasn't angry, he wasn't rude, he just kept answering the questions that were coming at him. Chris Harrison is known to beat things to death. "Do you love her Juan Pablo? Do you love her? Do you love her????"

I 100% agree about Famer Chris. I have a feeling he's not the choir boy people believe. Was really turned off by the fact that during the Andrew/Marquel conversation, he jumped in to yell at JJ about something that happened between them during the season. Dude, conversation isn't about you right now.

Stand by Marquel for Bachelor 100%.

Bloopers were a disappointment.

I was born and raised in the Midwest too (my family didn't live on a farm but my grandma did outside a town of about 400 people) so I think I would enjoy a season of The Bachelor that got away from the usual helicopter and rappelling down the side of a building dates, but I'm getting that vibe from Chris too.  I believe someone upthread said he was getting a bit full of himself already and, while I can't really point to any certain action or anything he's said, I'm getting that vibe too.

I also got a strange vibe from Chris in this episode. He's been very polite with Andi the entire time, but on the other hand he was one of the most vocal when it came to attacking Nick, and then again in this episode, he started attacking JJ, even though the issue had nothing to do with him. Now I definitely agree with the things he said about JJ, but the fact that he felt the need to get involved like that doesn't really go with the sweet old country boy act. I just get the feeling that if JJ was the guy getting bullied in high school then Chris was one of the guys doing the bullying. Like he just can't ignore someone he doesn't like, he has to let them and everyone else know. It's just a hunch, but I'm starting to think the overly polite behaviour towards Andi and the love letters and planes are very calculated on his part. He's wanted to be the Bachelor since the very beginning.

It says something about how lame Andi is that the most compelling segment involved a dispute amongst the guys that had nothing to do with her.

Sometimes I scroll too fast and see a person's comments before their name, but when I saw this I thought, "This has to be Alapaki. Ha!

They might be nice sometimes, but Brian seems like he can be an angry dude, and so does Chris the Farmer.

I don't find him attractive, he has a giant head.

Cosign on both of these comments. Chris seems like kind of an angry guy, with a huge head and no neck. I don't hate him, but he just does nothing for me.

The ultrasound was beyond stupid, and Chris Harrison's stupid sexist comments about how 'all men want boys' blah blah blah just made me want to puke.

Sticking my fingers in my ears and going "la la la" because I have a totally inexplicable crush on Chris Harrison and don't want to believe he's sexist. I know, I have issues.

My two cents on Marquel: Again, I don't hate the guy, but I'm no longer a big fan either. I really loved his exit from the show and thought he was a class act, but his behavior on TMTA turned me off. It seemed self-serving, especially with the references to his faith. I hate it when people trot out their faith like it's some sort of proof that they're good, morally upstanding people. Well it's not. It's simply what you believe - it doesn't automatically make you an angel.

Maybe this is my dislike for Andi talking, but I really saw that as a #humblebrag.  The implication is that you have to be attractive to date athletes.  It would be the equivalent of a guy "complaining" about all the super-models he's dated.

I agree with you because I think she (and her father) have some idea that "athlete" = "attractive and desirable". But unlike super models (who -should- all be "hot"), there are so many ugly and dumb athletes (including professional ones) that it's funny for me to think that dating "an athlete" has any status at all. I think Andi -is- bragging that way, but it just reminds me of how--while she's been one of the better b-ettes, I wouldn't probably like her as a friend. She's been great with the guys--because she needs their good approval. But she's the kind of person, just a vibe, who makes me wonder how she treats people she -doesn't- need anything from.

re: blackies. I so wish Andrew had come back at JJ with "black GUYS, like saying 'blondes' or something. Why would you hear it as something so offensive instead?"  Then again, I think JJ is a shit-stirrer--and I feel bad for Marquel if he thinks JJ told him that for any constructive reason--so I would have loved to have seen the tables turned.

The only lie detector question that would have interested me about Josh is "More than 20 women?" Because I have a feeling that may have been really "yes" and it doesn't match what he's been telling her (and would explain why he was so freaked out about it--also why CH wants to keep bringing it up.)

As for the letter (wasn't that scene in The Dominican, not backstage?), whether from Nick or Josh (probably, like the flowers, from salesman Nick), I'm sure it's just a last plea in some romantic form, for her to know "she's the one" and make the extra, final push for her to choose him. (Looks long, too, which to me says "Nick" more than "Josh". But a last minute "Dear John" letter from her F1 would be awesome. Just not happening. They are both "in love"--and want to win.)

Every time I watch TMTA/TWTA and see some guy in the audience, I always wonder what terrible thing he did that made him feel obligated to join his wife/girlfriend/significant other at the taping of this terrible show! LOL  I'm a guy who enjoys watching the Bachelor/Bachelorette at home each season, but I can't imagine actually attending one of the "events".  Yikes!

From what we were shown, he didn't say he was celibate for five years, he just said he didn't date. He could have picked up a different girl at a bar every Friday night, but that's not dating.

re: Andrew RaceGate he actually said something interesting: "Everything that everyone says at Rose Ceremonies is recorded bc everyone has microphones on...Ponder that & then come to ur own conclusions."

If that's the case, and if Andrew had actually said "blackies", I'm sure they would have aired it. Could Andrew sue for defamation and have the audio subpoenaed so that he can publicly clear his name? Or does this fall under the "we may portray you however we want" contract that all reality TV subjects sign?

ETA: And if he talked so quietly that the microphone couldn't pick it up, no way could JJ have heard "blackies" with complete certainty.

This was such a boring installment, I played computer games while watching. Obviously very heavily padded. ITA with the reviewer -- Bachelor in Paradise looks way more interesting than anything we saw on this Tell All episode.

The blackie thing just bored me to tears, since they had no evidence and no one was changing their story.

On Farmer Chris, I'm not surprised some people are seeing a darker side, considering he's been in trouble with the law numerous times. Of course, what else is there to do in the-middle-of-nowhere Iowa? (http://hollywoodlife.com/2014/07/01/chris-soules-past-arrests-bachelorette-andi-dorfman/)

I was surprised Andi dumped him because of the rural life issue so late in the game (she reiterated it this episode), when that was apparent from the first. Unless she thought true love might conquer even a desire to live in the city instead of on a farm. I could never see Andi as a country wife (myself, either, for that matter.)

My husband and I MapQuested Chris's town, and found it to be an hour to any city of any size, and about 20-30 minutes to the county seat, the closest town with a defense attorney (I think it was maybe pop. 6,000). I wouldn't be surprised if it shared a DA with another county, and I doubt that DA wants to just give Andi his job.

That speed-dating segment was silly. Such an obvious set up. And why this chick? She said she's from a small town, but also from Toronto (the biggest metro city in all of Canada). So she's from "rural" Toronto, like a nearby small town? What the-- What's her actual small hometown, and why does this make her a great match for Chris? And why does she get this chance? And she had a butt-chin, and if Chris didn't find that attractive, either, he was really stuck because he couldn't just put her off on national TV.

I've been rooting for and defending Ashley since her season, but I did NOT enjoy the ultrasound segment. TMI! Too intimate for TV. I assume she had one immediately prior to rule out any problems being discovered, which would be awkward. It IS a diagnostic tool, after all.

Why, indeed.  I don't know, maybe it wasn't a set-up?  There was nothing wrong with her, but there must have been someone hotter in the audience.  And she was just so awkward on camera.  If they'd really cast the role, they should/would have come up with a better angle than "I'm also from a small town."

Maybe she meant she was from Toronto, Iowa - population 123.

I think she introduced herself as a Canadian, so I'm guessing she meant the big Toronto. Perhaps she just said she flew from there.

I was glad they showed the real time clip. Whatever he said, it was about 4 words long, very short, so it definitely wasn't the long sentence he claimed he said. I was disappointed he couldn't come up with something better and defend it. Like, "All the black guys". Which I don't think is necessarily bigoted and could be defended--while giving JJ an out too. Like saying, "All the blondes." Kind of sizing up her taste.

As someone mentioned previously, if there were only 2 blondes out of 18(or whatever the number was, I don’t actually recall, sorry), and the rest were brunettes, and someone said “they’re picking all the blondes,” it would be odd.  Andrew’s supposed statement just shows an inordinate emphasis on race. Which doesn’t mean someone is racist per se. I mean, sometimes we may place inordinate emphasis on race in our minds, because as humans, we have a natural tendency to place things and people into neat little categories. It makes the variety and complexity in the world easier to understand, and we don’t have to think as hard. However, no matter how many dumb, unsubstantiated thoughts go through your head, the douchy part is leaning over to share it with someone else. It is like you assume they will know what your implication is. Wink, wink, nudge, nudge, of course, you’re also a white guy, so, I'm sure you’ll understand what I’m implying when I say, she picked the 2 black guys.

You don’t need to share these speculations with someone you don’t know, it just makes you look like a douche.

Whether or not he really made the statement, I’m not sure.  I am also finding it hard to choose the douchier of the two between Andrew and JJ.  But, I tend to think it would be just too weird of a thing for JJ to completely make up, although he probably misheard it in part, and didn’t mind stirring the pot to create some pants-troversy.

Andy dumped the guys with the long hair the 1st night, and she kept the black guys.

Could it be that she likes black guys and doesn't like long hair on men?

It is now racist to point one of these out.  This is getting ridiculous.

Kim K likes black men and members of her family have stated how she is attracted to black guys. Are they all racist?

Maybe Andrew said, "she likes black guys"  4 words.  However, I think JJ is a piece of crap liar.  He was sweating when confronted.

Obviously, if she really had a specific, particular attraction to black guys, don’t you think they would have included, maybe more than 2?  I’m not sure how much involvement our Bachelorette has in who is chosen, but I have to believe that the producers would at least try for the majority of guys being someone the Bachelorette will find attractive, so that they can have their occasional “successes.”  Probably more likely, she isn’t opposed to dating black guys. And she liked both Ron and Marquel better than some of the others left. Maybe they were actually just better guys than the ones who went home?

In my opinion, Andrew mixing up Ron’s and Marquel’s names is just a harmless gaffe, as both of them were just being discussed. On top of everything else, it did turn out pretty awkwardly for poor Andrew though, heh. Couldn’t have been a worse opportunity to make that kind of slip up.  He was probably thinking, “Don’t say anything racist, don’t say anything racist…” “Now, when Ron here said...” Silence “Ohhhhhhhhh, shit   :0”

I think the producers have audio and know exactly what was said and by whom.

However, if they made the words known, option A: it would either paint Andrew as a racist, or JJ as a liar.  Outting either one would make the producers look inept at best, and complicit at worst.   Option B would be just let the show run it's course, and if tongues got flapping, they could just deny, deny, deny.  "Nope, no audio, sorry".

It's a no-lose move, and they took it.  Validating either contestant is a fail for everybody involved.

I would think that the show probably does not have 26 microphone packs. I would assume it's too costly to have that many people miced (that spelling doesn't look right--miked?) when 10 or so people are going to be sent home that first night anyway. I wouldn't be surprised if they only mic a handful of guys at a time, so we can't be sure that there is audio. I have no doubt they would play it if they had it.

Ha, that was exactly my thought, that he was concentrating very hard on not saying anything that could be construed as slightly racist, and ooops! The wrong name came out. I frequently did that with my sons - the wrong name would come out although I knew clearly which one a comment would be directed towards...much worse are the countless times I would call one of them "Wishbone" - my dog. I still find that the wrong name pops out in various conversations. I would be a terrible Bachelorette - the wrong name would constantly be getting called out.

I have to mention one of my other major pet-peeves about the MTA/WTA and I find it's more a habit with the Bachelorettes - referring to the contestants as exes. Oh give me a break. Yes the premise of this show is supposedly "dating" 25 men but let's face it, about 5-10 of those guys are cut the first damn night and of the ones cut chances she never even spoke to them. Then there are the list of other guys who got strung along for a few episodes, never having any real one on one time, just showing up on some group dates, having a few moments at the cocktail party and that's it. That's not dating and that certainly does not make someone an ex.

It actually reminds me of a hilarious moment in Desiree's season. I think it was the first or second episode, during one of her first one on one's when the guy wanted to reassure he he was nothing like her ex. Desiree went, "you know my ex..." only for the guy to mention Sean and then she got an "oh yeah right..." poker face. Because the fact of the matter is this show is really just a fancier, more expensive version of speed dating which is why even the couples who've lasted from the show have stated that the real dating, the real getting to know each other happened after the season ended.

It would be so very easy, especially when it was whispered to you, to misconstrue the words "black guys" for "blackies".  I don't find the words "black guys" particularly racists but blackies is definitely over the line.  Why Andrew would feel the need to point this out I have no idea.  As someone else pointed out he didn't feel the need to say that she kept all the blondes or brunettes or blue eyed men.

I assume they do ask the lead about their preferences in race and that most say they are open to dating men/women of other races. After that, for whatever reason it just doesn't work out between them.  I know at least one Bach lead said he'd had more than one African American girlfriend (I forget who it was) yet he still only had one or two African American women.  I am so ready for a good, handsome, charming, well educated African American lead (of either sex).  There are plenty out there!  And I'm a 50 year old white woman married to a white man!  What's that tell you about America being ready for some racial diversity producers??

On most seasons it's hard to find any theme when it comes to the contestants.  One I do remember is from Sean's season: no tattoos.  Well, Des had a star or something on her hipbone and Lindsay had a foot tattoo, but that's all I saw.  I noticed there were no tramp-stamps during the beach volleyball group date, so from then on I kept an eye out.

Well, at the point in question of the show, there weren't 26 people there.

Also, they use several cameras for this show, and it wouldn't be inconceivable to have a certain amount of mics synced with each camera, so even at the initial rose ceremony, yes they could have had 26 mics. I wouldn't want to be that editor. Or those editors.

And I agree with the above poster who said that validating either side of this whole Andrew/JJ mess is a fail for everyone involved.

Does Harrison actually expect us to believe those ultra-sensitive microphones at the rose ceremony did not pick up EXACTLY what was said? Come on now.

Exactly what I've said all along.  Either a) he didn't say anything of significance, or at least not what JJ claimed; or b) it wasn't picked up by the mic for whatever reason.  Cause seriously?  If they had caught anything like that on mic there's NO FREAKING WAY they wouldn't have subtitled the crap out of that and played it over and over again for effect.  I mean, just look at how much they played it when you COULDN'T make anything out.  I'm actually kind impressed that the producers restrained themselves from actually dubbing in or subtitling over words that were never spoken.  Maybe they would be afraid of a lawsuit, even though I don't think the contestants are allowed to sue.

I don't really buy this.  I mean, I suppose it could be true.  But if the very small, very low-budget community theater company I'm working with right now can afford 20 lav mics for the cast, I'm guessing a big-budget show like this could probably afford to mic every contestant, and certainly with much higher quality equipment than we have.  I suppose they may have reasons for not micing (miking?) everyone, but I doubt it's a lack of mics.

THIS!!!  Although (assuming it is Chris) I'm already cringing from all the "The Bachelor: Down on the Farm" references that will undoubtedly be made.  Taking bets on how many dates it will be before he and one of the "ladies" take a literal roll in the hay.  *Eyeroll*

And it seems as though a lot of smartasses from TWoP have migrated to PreviouslyTV

Hey now!  I resemble that remark!

Anywho, I haven't bothered to watch this yet, and feel like after reading your comments that I really don't need to waste my time.  So thanks for that, guys.  Although I do kinda want to see JJ cry.  Maybe I'll just look for a clip of that part.

They looked like they were in some cult - the crazed, glazed eyes, the repeated gasps - one woman looked like she was about to cry in one shot! No doubt that they DID drink the Kool [/i]

Hell to the yes! The audience is identical to the one in Requiem for a Dream yelling "Be excited! Be excited! Beeeee excited!"!

I hate to say this because it makes him sound a lot hotter than I think he is, but Chris sorta reminds me of Ed Burns. It may just be the somewhat scratchy voice. I picked up douchebag too on the Men tell All from him.

If there wasn't so much fucking filler (ultrasounds and weird girl wearing odd pantsuit from audience) this concept could really work. If they gave us behind the scenes dirt, I'd be all over it. Instead it's a formulaic show of the nice stay nice and the mean stay mean (complete with close ups of girls making angry, disappointed grimaces when said villain speaks). If I know this as a dumb girl working in insurance, why the hell don't tv execs making millions know this? Give us trash loving viewers the goods!

Guuuuise I couldn't find this episode! I looked for it -surfed ALL the channels, but all I found was an INFOMERCIAL for a baby ultrasound and some show called Bachelor in Paradise!?!? Do you know if they'll re-air this episode because I want to know what happened behind the scene and what the men had to say about Andi and their experience this season! Thank you. Asking for a friend.

I think Chris would be a dull bachelor, but after Juan Pablo maybe they will play it safe. I just read Arie is in the running, I would rather watch him.

PLEASE let it be Arie.  I'm sure Jef would then pop up to encourage him, etc.  Chris seems to have some good qualities but Arie would bring much needed snark.

(Edited because construed is NOT the same word as confined.)

That’s pretty hilarious, since Wishbone is so clearly not a human name. (Though it might not be a bad rap name) I can just imagine your son’s face, “Well done! I’m so proud of you Wishbooo…. I mean…[son’s name]”

Of the 30 or so people who were the Bachelor/ette, I believe less than ten would be considered “nice”, so what is your point?

I'm so confused by this question. If someone actually knows the contestant and has some insight beyond what we see on TV and in the media, of course we want to know!

Additionally, Chris has come across, whether through editing or acting or whatever, as precisely one of those less than ten guys, so if someone knows differently, that would be relevant.

I would assume it's too costly to have that many people miced (that spelling doesn't look right--miked?)

I suppose they may have reasons for not micing (miking?) everyone

So, for anyone wondering, here is what this New York Times article had to say about the matter:

“The Associated Press Stylebook earlier this year reversed its advice to abbreviate microphone as mike. As the stylebook's editors told the American Copy Editors Society in April, the A.P.'s broadcast division was unhappy with mike, and so the entry was revised to recommend mic instead.

Some of the copy editors voiced objections to the A.P.'s amended edict, on the grounds that mic could confuse readers who might be tempted to pronounce it as "mick." The Washington Post's Bill Walsh pressed the stylebook editors on the verb form: is a person mic'ed or miked? The A.P. style gurus allowed that the verb could be miked, even if the noun is mic.”

So, basically, proper usage hasn’t been established, or in other words, no one knows.

Seems like either spelling is acceptable.

Thank you, PoorerThanDead! I'm an editor, so I could have looked it up when I wrote it, but I was too lazy to do so. Yet, it seems that my resources might not have been accurate anyway. However, now curiosity has gotten the best of me and I looked up mic/mike/microphone in the print versions of Chicago Manual of Style and Microsoft Manual of Style (the resources that I follow); unsurprisingly, the word isn't covered. Neither version of mic/mike is in the dictionary that we use--but my company is using a 25-year-old dictionary (Webster's Ninth New Collegiate Dictionary) because I suppose they're too cheap to invest in new ones! Anyway, I suppose mic/mike will be one of life's great unsolved mysteries just like blackie/black guy/____.
