"The View": Week of 11/16/2020

Oh, Sara!

Why is she surprised that people are still refusing to wear masks? Has she seen coverage of a Trump rally?

I  really wonder about her.

I've been noticing lately that she always has a big smile on her face, no matter what serious topic they are discussing.  Whoopi, Joy and Sunny look subdued if not sad, and there is Sara with a big grin. She seems kind of hopelessly naive.

I don’t think Sunny is correct in saying Americans overwhelmingly supported progressive candidates. I’d like to know what source she is quoting. I think a lot of Dems lost because of the specter of socialism put forth by the Reps. At least in the Midwest this is the case.

Yes, ma’am Michael B is gorgeous but I first saw him as a teenager on Fri Night Lights so it feels icky thinking of him as sexy.  (Ha!  Whoopi agrees with me.)

He was even younger when I saw him on the Wire.  And even though I didn't watch All my Children I read soap magazines so I knew of him when he was even younger.  But I do have to say he is one fine looking man.  I'm really glad to see him have the career that he is having.

Also she is not clarifying if those candidates were incumbents or not.  Joy and Ana both said earlier this week Democrats need better messaging.  When progressive policies are explained properly they are overwhelmingly popular.

She started out saying that those Democrats that ran on progressive platforms won.  Which is accurate.  Those Democrats that lost Congressional seats were moderates.   I'm pretty sure she was referring to incumbent races, but she didn't make that clear.   Also hard to determine whether those progressives that won live in more progressive areas who were less susceptible to the socialism boogyman the republicans ran on.

And we don't know if they lost because not enough Democrats voted for them or because too many Republicans voted for their opponent. So were they not progressive enough or not a Republican?

The producers give Sara scripted answers to read and she probably doesn't know entirely what she is reading.  She reads what is on a teleprompter or her blue cards. I really think that is why she in the studio. If something goes wrong with her script, the producers are close by.

Joy and Sunny only reference their cards for examples or statistics.

Sara is in over her head on the serious topics.

Sounds like the View has another blond that is willing to say what she is told.  Are we sure Bill Geddie isn't back?

I do think Sara is being given all of what she is supposed to say, and in many ways it reminds me of MeAgain, but she gets her talking points from elsewhere. It makes me uncomfortable for Sara.

When they watched the comedian's hysterical video (which ended with her goal of spending more time with family and then saying her grandma died!!), Sara started laughing and had the giggles as she was going to speak, as Whoopi called on her. Then Whoopi must have been worried they were going to get a repeat of the last time she got the giggles and couldn't stop. So Whoopi tried to cut her off and go to someone else, but Sara ignored her (or didn't hear) and carried on.

And of course Whoopi flubbed the intro to the guests, completely mispronouncing his name. Then she said something like her mouth got stuck or her teeth. Then once the guests were introduced she apologizes and tries to joke about it and says her glasses were crooked. The guest was very gracious.

But what Whoopi should have said is that she is too damn lazy to actually prepare for the show, by practicing all of the things she is going to read off of the teleprompter. I have worked with a teleprompter, and no one in their right mind would read it cold. But that appears to be what she is doing as you can clearly see she is surprised by what she is reading.

There was also more awkward cross talk today.

And Whoopi has a book for sale: Wear the Damn Mask! (But Sara wasn't allowed to say Schitt's Creek?)

Yeah, the cross talk today was pretty bad.  Some days it seems they are realizing and doing better but not today.

Whoopi was on one of the talk shows last night hawking her line of Xmas scarves and face masks - she said she wasn't going with sweaters this year because nobody is going out...... so she thinks that they're sitting home wearing scarves?

Can they have a moratorium on the discussion of masks for the rest of 2020 ? Please ?  Every day they bring up the discussion of wearing masks - since March!  I know how they're going to respond before Whoopi starts her 'Round Robin' of questioning. We know where each of them stand on the issue, so do we need Whoopi to ask every day, "What y'all think? Should we be wearing masks ?"

Ha-Ha!  I don't think Sara is being told what to say, like Bitsy was, to repeat someone's opinion.

I think she is told what to say because the serious political/COVID topics are over her head. She can't hold her own with the rest of them so they give her a script to read.

She is fine the fluff topics, but they really don't cover much of that anymore.

Whoopi has dyslexia. I'll give her a mulligan on the teleprompter.

Sarah probably prepares for the show and plans to get her points in using complete sentences rather than rambling, like Whoopi.  No prep is necessary to ask the other hosts what they think about "this thing".  I wish they'd reply with "what thing?" or "which thing are you asking about?".

The other day I mentioned Sunny seemed bored and disconnected.  Well, today the award goes to Joy, who outdid Sunny by a mile.  Don't get me wrong, I love Joy and most always agree with her opinions.  It's also obvious how stressed she's been since March.  When the show began today, she was looking at her phone and didn't seem to realize they were on the air and several times during different segments she seemed to be distracted and not paying attention to what the other hosts were saying.  When everyone else, Sunny included, was laughing and having some fun she didn't seem to be taking part in the bantering back and forth.  Maybe she was having audio issues but she just seemed off.  I hope everything is okay in her personal life.  If I were her I would be enjoying these shows where Ana's intelligence, fabulous sense of humor and quick wit are making the show so enjoyable to watch.  We all know that won't be the case when the other one returns.

Even more reason that she has to practice the intros and the topic intros. She should be doing several practices on each, but it is clear she doesn't even know what is coming. I used to rehearse CEOs who used teleprompters as well as others who were less experienced. They all had to practice.

Whoopi has pretty much stated on the show that she rolls out of bed and in front of the camera.

I think it's because they need someone to present the other side of the question now that Meghan is off and Sara is the junior host. In theory it should be Ana as the conservative guest host but she's agreeing with Joy, Sunny and Whoopi on just about everything right now.

I think Joy just wasn't feeling well.  She's been sounding ill-ish the last few eps.  And no I'm not saying the 'rona, there are still other illnesses out there.  Then there was the big scarf around her neck.  I think she's just not feeling well.

Joy does. 🤷🏻‍♀️

So who is Whoopi's latest money-making scheme targeted to? Is it a children's book? Don't think so, considering the title.

This show isn't Crossfire.  Why do they need to present the other side?  There are plenty of other shows to wiatch if you want to hear that side. This show was supposed to be about the cohosts presenting their view.  If one of the cohosts happened to be a conservative then they expressed their views.  But for Sara to be tasked with giving voice to that side simply because Meghan isn't there really annoys me. And we don't even know if that is true.  But it would explain why she sometimes contradicts herself from day to day.

I find that it makes the show more interesting, to the hosts as well as to me. It gives them a chance to evaluate the ideas and something to push back against. Otherwise it just becomes five women agreeing on masks.

One reason why I like having Ana on is that even though her views are to the right of the others', she's willing to debate and be flexible. I find that Meghan is too often "my party, right or wrong".

I feel like I was watching a different show yesterday from y'all. I didn't see any cross-talk. Well, not too much. Joy wanting to add something, then Whoopi paused and let her.

Sure, there was the usual Whoopi mispronouncing a name, but that's par for the course for her.

And Sunny? There is  NO such thing as "alternative facts"! Since they're calling a spade a spade, just come out and say LIES. Because that's what those who say "alternative facts" are doing: LYING. Jeebus Cripes.

As for Sara's uncontrollable giggles yesterday? Well, ALL the ladies were laughing and giggling. Even the woman whose video/instagram, whatever it was, who was showing her "to do" list for 2020, couldn't stop her own ass from laughing as she went down the list. And I read the comments here before I got a chance to watch, so I didn't see Sara reading her note cards yesterday. I don't know. Am I missing something?

Exactly! Yet Whoopie brings this up for discussion almost every day, as though it's a brand new subject they haven't discussed yet. I want to yell out, "YES, WHOOPIE! THEY ALL BELIEVE IN WEARING A MASK DURING THE PANDEMIC! CAN WE MOVE ON, NOW ?"

I'll be the first to admit it - I'm really missing MeAgain. She gave this show a jolt of energy each day, whether you agreed with what she said or not. Now this show is becoming as lame as 'The Talk', where everyone agrees with the other host.  Something tells me MeAgain won't be back until after the new year, since they usually go on Christmas break by the second week of December.

Whoopi is on point today. I so agree with her about the state of the country.

If only she had practiced saying Dr Murthy’s name and intro.

I could have guessed Sunny would dream that Manny cheated on her and she’d be mad at him IRL.

There was a scare this morning that Whoopi and Sarah were going to host the whole show today by themselves !!!! Talk about an impending plane crash !  Everyone in their 'crash positions' now!

However, Sunny joined the crew just as the plane was ascending, and took over the controls. Joy came in after the commercial break, and all is right with the world.

Please, Sunny and Joy  - don't ever scare us like that again!

She's a fiscal conservative and conservative on national security, but definitely moderate on most social issues.  I believe she was heavily involved with the Mitt Romney presidential campaign who is fairly moderate for a republican.

I do think we will see more of Ana's conservative views going forward during the Biden administration.  Ana just wasn't into the culture war issues that dominated Trumpism like MM was, so she didn't get many opportunities to discuss actual conservative points of view.

Ana is more in line with Norheastern Republicans back in the day who were fiscally conservative small government and socially liberal. Plus, Ana is from Nicaragua that was devastated by far left ideology, so it explains why she became a Republican..

It was downright painful. It is difficult to watch her twisting her face as she tries to read and understand what she is saying at the same time. How she can continue to be a moderator like this I will never understand.

Whoopi is getting some news coverage with the blood on his hands comments. I am sure Fox people will have something to say about that.

I disagree.   THe original show was just presenting viewpoints from women who differed in age, background, phase of life, etc.  It was never about one side VS. the other side, as though the only opinions worth having have to be diametrically opposed to each other.  There was more nuance, women presenting their own personal views, not Liberal/conservative, Right/Left, Republican/Democrat.  When people just speak about what they think and feel, it is far more interesting, because you're not representing a "side", you're just representing yourself.

Yes, Joy is liberal, but she doesn't try to speak for all liberals.  she speaks for herself, says what she thinks. Meghan has that "as a conservative..."  prefix to her opinions, or trying to explain what other conservatives  (trumps base, middle america, etc )  might think.  Sunny and Ana have their own opinions, which do not 100% line up with a political party, which is exactly what the show needs to be.    Sara just seems naive, and willing to parrot back whatever opinion she most recently heard, without delving too deeply or gathering information which might make an issue complicated.

The show needs smart interesting women, not women who are tasked with representing a political party, or an opposing point of view.

I would like to add Starr Jones in that category of women while she was a staunch liberal she used to say that as a wife, she would submit to her husband..  So she was inclined to adhere to traditional male/female roles in her marriage that you would expect a conservative woman to say..

Whoopie is also a liberal who does not want to pay a lot of taxes..

The women back in the day had complex views about things and it was not always staunch right versus staunch left..

We had no idea which way Meredith voted.  The show was far more enjoyable when the co hosts just discussed the hot topics (politics included) and it wasn't presented as your team versus my team. I miss those days.

It was a different place and time back then (1997-2006). Politics are not the same as they once were - more and more evident every day.

Quote

Whoopie is also a liberal who does not want to pay a lot of taxes..

Not really - when Congress passed those big tax breaks for the very wealthy a few years ago, she acknowledged she benefits from it, but would rather pay her fair share and let those with low incomes take the tax break.  Joy said the same thing.

Aside from Meghan's fireworks each day, I think what's really notably missing is the energy from a live audience. The hosts  played off the energy from the studio.

When Joy told a joke and the audience would laugh hysterically but her cohosts chuckled, Joy loved that it and it energized her.

Whoopi would get the audience on her side laughing when she would turn her head over her shoulder, and give facial reactions to what was being discussed at the table. The audience hooted at that.

And Sunny loved it when she would be getting into a debate with a guest or cohost who opposed her, and the audience would clap and cheer her on. Sunny needed that positive feedback.

All that is missing now.

If Joy's jokes fall flat with the cohosts there's nothing she can do but smirk in disgust.

Whoopi can't make her rubbery facial reactions over her shoulder to get a reaction from the audience - now she has to look confused on camera.

No one cheers Sunny the prosecutor on - so she pouts.
