Once again, I liked all the players so I'm good with the new champ. Also, she was the only girl so I was kinda rooting for her.

Yes, and since I was also "kinda rooting for her" I guess it's okay if I finally throw the other woman on stage under the bus a little: I am so sure that Brendan knew "Jaws" for DD and was thrown off when KC said scoldingly: "Big wager!" He probably would have won. But, yeah, I like the librarian with Best Karaoke Stage Presence.

I was a bit peeved they did not come back from the last commercial break and credit Brendan’s answer of “Scuba” instead of “wreck” but since he got FJ wrong I don’t think it would have ended up mattering. But didn’t that clue just ask for a 5-letter type of diver who explores sunken ships? Scuba fits that perfectly.

I realize they aren't the same.

The question is would you see a lunar eclipse standing on the moon or while orbiting the moon.

But the question specifically mentioned apollo 8 and what they saw so I guess that's where only earthrise works.

A lunar eclipse happens when the Earth's shadow is cast on the moon and we see it by looking at the moon from Earth. From the moon's surface, it would look much like a solar eclipse looks on Earth - there was a probe that took a picture of a 'lunar eclipse' from orbit around the moon. You can still see this event from the surface of the moon and from orbit, though.

A solar eclipse happens when the moon blocks the sun from view from Earth, so this wouldn't be visible in any way from the moon's orbit or surface, except for maybe seeing the shadow cast on the section of Earth's surface that is affected by the eclipse.

But yes, Apollo 8 took the infamous Earthrise photo from orbit around the moon. The reason you can't see Earthrise from the surface is because of the tidally locked orbit - if you are on the 'near' side of the moon, you can always see the Earth, and if you are on the 'far' side of the moon, you can never see the Earth. The Earth won't appear and disappear across the moon's horizon.

LOL at them putting "Schitt's Creek" up on the screen when Brendon incorrectly answered the Catherine O'Hara clue, so we'd know he hadn't just said "shit" on network TV.

Morgan reminded me a bit of the actor playing Harris on The Conners (her face and hair, not her voice).

Not a great first round for me; I ran potent potables (always a very strong category), history, and facts, but missed all but one (the indeed terrific When They See Us) in TV shows, three in novels, and two in alliteration.

In DJ, I ran Losing U, '90s non-fiction, and scary movies - all categories right up my alley.  I also ran shell game, and only missed two in low and one in Europe.  Much better!

I got FJ - I knew Bull Moose right away, and got Socialist in plenty of time.

I said scuba, too, but I knew it was wrong - I knew it was too general and there was a specific kind of diving I was unaware of that they were looking for.  The clue read:

Quote

5-letter type of diving, specifically to targets like the USS Spiegel Grove

So, scuba diving is the general term for diving using that equipment (self-contained underwater breathing apparatus), and wreck diving is the term for scuba diving specifically to shipwrecks.  I wouldn't have accepted scuba, either.

During a solar eclipse if you orbit the moon and are in area between the earth and the moon where eclipse falls, I think you would see a solar eclipse.  If you orbit to the other side of the moon between the moon and the sun it would be gone.

And during a lunar eclipse as well I think it depends on how much of the orbit around the moon in addition to the moon itself is blocked by the earths eclipse.  It would be like a solar eclipse as you say on the moon but if the moon orbit is outside the eclipse area from the earth, then the eclipse wouldn't be present.   I suspect it would be a partial eclipse but not a full portion of the eclipse like on the moon.

They really were begging for someone to say "S(c)hit(t)."  That silly little graphic, oy!  Then again, we all have different sensibilities.  I imagine my parents would not have been pleased to hear that, even in context, while watching with Young 853.

I found Morgan very likable.  I want to say "spunky" but I'm not sure whether that term is loaded with condescension toward young women.  Her little shimmy and so on were just right to show a little character without being obnoxious.

I did get FJ but am not confident I could've said Wilson won if I'd had to.  I didn't remember any socialist polling as high as Debs' 6% but thought that had to be it.  Democrat was a good trap.

I ran it too. Goodness knows why. I don't have more than one mixed drink a year (and it's always the same one), and I rarely have wine. Especially since I shop at 6 a.m. these days and our liquor laws don't let you buy alcohol before 7 a.m. I guess it's okay to get drunk at 7, but not at 6. <shrug>

Bull Moose crossed my mind - but I talked myself out of it.  And I went a touch too left for the other party.

Henry VIII did not believe in the reformation at all.  He wrote a pamphlet countering Martin Luther which is when the Pope gave him the title.  It wasn't until he wanted a divorce (annullment) and the pope wouldn't grant it that he broke off his own religion.  However, he kept it very close to Catholicism without the pope, since it wasn't really a matter of religion but throwing a temper tantrum because he didn't get what he wanted.  Even the pope not granting him the divorce (which he shouldn't have) was really all politics.  But, that's a long story.

I also ran Potent Potables, but was unhappy they didn’t have time to show the last clue. I was pre-guessing Guinness since it was St Paddy’s Day or Snow beer (the biggest seller in the world and made in China). I also came up with Jaws, and Spade. I got half of FJ correct.

BTW, I pretty much ran the Potents category too, even though I too am pretty much a teetotaler. I wonder if there was either an assumption among the clue writers that Jeopardy contestants wouldn't be drinkers, or if the clue writers themselves are as a group not familiar with Potent Potables?

Yes to all of that. Nevertheless, he triggered the end of the dominance of the Roman Catholic church in England - whatever his intentions. Hence the irony.

I saw a PBS special about the 1912 election, and got Socialist right away.  Took what seemed like forever to come up with the Bull Moose/Progressive party because Teddy Roosevelt had been a Republican prior to losing the 1912 nomination to the incumbent president William Taft.  I did get there, but probably not before time ran out.  Still, I'm counting it as a win.

I did get The Hot Zone, west wind and Jaws.  I also wondered if they'd accept shovel.

Roosevelt and Taft did split the vote, which is why the Bull Moose party came in second and the Republican party third.

Scuba diving can occur lots of places besides wreck sites, so it wasn't specific enough.  The clue referenced the site of a particular wreck.

I knew it was, back before he decided to divorce Catherine of Aragon and had to break with the Catholic Church to do it.  And yet I stupidly said "Protector of the Faith" instead.  Not all that different in meaning, but not the correct title.  Oy.

Yep, Catherine of Aragon was the niece of the Holy Roman Emperor, and at the time Pope Julius was his prisoner, so agreeing to the divorce would've mean serious repercussions for Julius' continued well-being.

Sting was in no hurry to read those clues, was he?  I do appreciate the way the show puts these guest categories together, so they will still be of interest even if you don't really know that individual celebrity.  I certainly know of him and The Police, and have probably heard more of their music than I know, but it's not anything I've sought out.  I still got 4/5, although showing a picture of Margaret Thatcher and asking who it is was pretty easy for $800.  That little tag at the end was cute.

"Stronger than dirt" surprised me: I would've put money on "stronger than grease."  Apparently the second is more recent but Ajax has used both.  Actually I thought it was "stronger than all grease," so close but no cigar.  Lots of those for me tonight.  GW Carver instead of Booker T Washington, "Cool Hand Luke" instead of "O Brother" for the chain gang film, not great.

He seemed like a nice guy, and maybe it's the fashion now, to listen to Katie.  But at the risk of sounding like my dad, Matt, you couldn't've fastened the top button and pushed your tie up a little?  I'm no Beau Brummell but that look is so schlubby to me.

Somehow it seemed wrong that Katie didn't make Morgan actually rephrase, and instead just reminded her to include the question in future. I know they always get a reminder in the first round, so they must've thought they were just cutting out a formality by assuming she would've fixed it, but still.

As far as Muay Thai from the other day, I knew it, but had never heard it pronounced.  I would've made it sound like the cocktail, and would probably have been ruled wrong.  I might just have said nothing, to avoid the risk of looking foolish.

Gah, no FJ, only one TS (old-fashioned) and two DDs. I ran no categories except Units of Measure, two of which they didn't get to. Only missed one each in Sting, Latin, and Acts of Congress.

Katie is annoying me more the closer to the end of her run we get.

Loved Sting's song at the end. ❤️

I waffled between Phantom of the Opera and Les Miserables for FJ, but in the end went with Phantom (and wrote the whole title down).  Good for me!

Morgan should either have gotten a prompt to use the correct phrasing, or not have gotten credit for that one clue.  And kilowatt hours would have gotten a BMS with Alex.

I got kilowatt hours, along with dirt, and old-fashioned.

I love Sting.  Two of my most favorite concerts back in the day were The Police, and Sting on his Dream of the Blue Turtles tour.  His song at the end was great.

The old-fashioned TS was surprising; not that no one remembered it (I didn't, either), but that no one looked at "the _____-_____ way" and figured it out.  Maybe it's just that no one wanted to risk $1000 on a guess.

Sultan going unanswered surprised me a bit, too; title starting with S for the leader of a Muslim country seemed like something one of three contestants would reason their way to.  Maybe they thought it was a name rather than a title - some specific S-dude's armed forces.

It's ridiculous they included a picture of Margaret Thatcher with that Sting clue; British prime minister + the year + anti-labor policies = plenty for a J! clue.

I knew the double eagle coins are gold thanks to an amusing episode of The Closer.

Not all births are happy events, especially in one of the world's most impoverished nations where the birth rate is so high because of sexist laws and customs, and the correlation between population growth and poverty has created such dire conditions its Health Dept. recently partnered with an international family planning organization to combat all that, so I did not appreciate the wording of the Niger clue.  Just say "these events".

I ran the first round, but it became immediately clear that was not going to happen in DJ, as I promptly missed three authors.  I also missed three mountains and two each in Latin and boys.

I got FJ, though - Phantom was my immediate guess, and it just felt right so I stuck with it.

I thought something like that, but not half as eloquently.  Well said.  Between that and the Nagorno-Karabakh clue recently, there seems perhaps to be something unpolished about how global affairs are understood in the writers' room.

I don't think it should. It's not like kilowatt hours are a type of kilowatt. It's a different unit. So it's not a question of specificity.

I agree; they all clearly missed the point, because electricity usage is measured in watt hours.

Electricity itself is measured in several ways, including watts; the unit of power, not of usage.  The amount of electricity used by a device or household, though, is measured in watt hours.  For some devices, it's a little, for some it's far more.  Based on the average, when talking about per household use, the measure is kilowatt hours, as it is when talking about a country's overall use like in the clue.

Yeah, the key to this FJ was definitely knowing which were longest running musicals and working backward from there. Can't be Cats because that doesn't really have a "lead". Can't be Wicked or Chicago because the leads are women. Badumpbump, gotta be Phantom.

I guessed The Music Man because I’m old and don’t know much about musicals or even theater in general. So I felt validated and a little less ignorant than usual when one of the contestants guessed that too.

I used a similar technique to get there (didn't recognize the actor's name), although I also considered Les Mis as a possibility.

I think that's a great guess.  You know they're not going to be asking about some very obscure show, so what are the big ones, and which of those have a male lead?  Knowing the very few to have run so long that someone could plausibly have played a role in 2500 performances and still left room for 15 others kinda falls into the realm of "you know it or you don't," and if you don't, pick one of those big ones.  It makes a lot of sense to me!  I did get it myself, but I was president of the drama club in high school, a theater major in college, a regular attendee of Musical Mondays at the neighborhood bar in the before times, etc, so I had better know this.
