Good episode right up until the last New Rule. Just..gah. I don't even know what to say.

Yes I do...fuck off, Bill.

I shut the TV off when Bill began the last new rule. It was the same old dogma that he rams down our throats every week. It really gets old.

Glad to see Andrew Sullivan went to Provincetown. After his last appearance, when he was apparently alone and depressed in his apartment in NY, I was worried that he might harm himself.  Of course, now he’s back to his feisty self and I can get exasperated with him again.

God, the little I saw of Sullivan was terrible. He's just going through all the standard white supremacist defenses against all Civil Rights movements. It's always those "outside agitators"--in this case liberal white kids--who are causing all the trouble when the black people are actually perfectly happy with the police. The police are just so put upon and most of them are such good people there's no systemic problem at all and if you talk about defunding them it's your fault if Trump gets elected.

It might have helped if Bill had an actual black activist leader on to speak for themselves, but no, just bring on Andrew Sullivan to remove them from the conversation. He's always ready with that familiar tired whine about all this nonsense about America having a history of white supremacy when it all looks fine to him. Why would anyone ask his opinion on this at all?

Look up “Andrew Sullivan” and “racism” on Google and scrolling down you’ll find a   headache-inducing trove of garbage from Sullivan, from his false and outrageous statement that 70% of African-Americans grow up without a father (not coincidentally a claim he made on Maher’s show) to an idiotic discussion of, uh, size for black men that Sullivan tweeted, deleted, and then continued to try to press.  Generalizations about various minority groups have been one of his standard fall-backs for much of his career.

He’s literally one of the worst, most insipid (to put it nicely), and most counter-productive voices you could invite on the show during a time when racial issues are at the forefront of the national conversation, so, of course, here’s Bill bringing him on.  There are about eight million better guests Maher could have on this week to discuss what’s currently going on; he could probably close his eyes, open a phone book, and randomly point to a name and find somebody more capable of having a productive conversation about race rather than just throwing out tired generalizations and thinking constantly repeating the word “woke” is making any kind of adequate argument.

That, plus his continuing contempt for millennials.

Bill continues to gripe about millennials when in actuality they are now in their early to late 30's and are married, having families and working...I have three of them and they and their friends are hard working, productive citizens. Perhaps Bill is unfamiiar with Gen Z? That is the generation that followed the millennials and are now in high school, college or are recent college grads. I did not see the show...what was his New Rules topic? And what, pray tell, was he griping about millennials about?

Andrew Sullivan is a loud mouth who probably is the most obnoxious  a-hole Maher has a on the show...and twice in one season no less. Ugh.

Millennials need to stop being anxiety-ridden, stay-at-home gamers and storm the beaches and malls (lol), go to a store and buy some pants, catch corona and shrug it off like it's a cold, because apparently the rest of the world's "time has passed" and it's their time now.

Is this what he said? Good god...he's got his generations confused...I think he means Gen Zers...but old fart Bill is probably unaware of this. He needs to retire.

Wow, Sullivan sure has the victim complex going strong. He seems oddly obsessed that racism is being blamed on him personally, and he's mad as hell about it. At least I think that's what he was raving about, he was somewhat ranty and incoherent, so it was hard to tell. Sad that he, as a gay person, knows exactly what discrimination feels like, yet apparently is totally insensitive to it unless it's happening to him.

Yeah, he thinks Millennials need to jumpstart the economy. And I agree that he is confusing them with Gen Z. The oldest Millennials are pushing 40.

Why does Bill think no one is shopping? I work in a retail store deemed "essential" and we've been doing fine throughout this whole thing. In fact, we are often packed and exceeding sales goals. Stores across the country have opened up and people are lining up to shop. Not to mention, online shopping is booming as usual.

He's probably spent the last four months vaping and watching online porn. He's woefully out of touch and starting to sound like an angrier version of Grandpa Simpson.

I think Bill is stuck in his perpetual time warp/obsession about Berkeley, and their college students being mean to him in 2014. He still thinks that college students = millennials and it's a conspiracy against him and they're all awful and blah blah blaaaaahhhh (plus he made a snide comment about Berkeley during the show, JFC, Bill get over it!!)

And only "one person in Japan under 30" has died of coronavirus? Well, that's nice, Is he aware that Japan is a different country than this one? Yes, their rates have been low in general, there seems to be some mystery about the "why" of that, but again DIFFERENT COUNTRY, DIFFERENT ETHNIC POPULATION (hits POC here more) DIFFERENT STATISTICS (and a different healthcare system, who is going to pay for the care and  hospitalization here of people who need treatment "even" if they don't die? )And aren't CV-19 infection rates skewing younger lately? Gaaaaaaah. It was actually a pretty good show up to that point, Andrew Sullivan and his whining and interrupting notwithstanding (Malcolm Nance did a great job of very politely shutting him down at several points). Once again, the worst part of Bill Maher's show is Bill Maher.

I thought Susan Rice spent her time with talking points, not saying anything new.

I really enjoyed the discussion between Sullivan and Nance.  There was no name-calling, no disrespecting each other’s views. Both had thoughtful, valid points worth listening to and thinking about.

Did he actually go on about Berkley disinviting him to speak there a gazillion years ago???  OMG!! In case he hasn't noticed....HE'S OLD by college age standards. They aren't interested in listening to a boomer tell rehashed jokes and trash them. You'd think he would have gotten over this by now...move on Bill...no one cares about your butt hurt feelngs because some college students decided you weren't relevant....it happens.

As for Japan...most Asian countries got almost total compliance from their citizens to wear masks, stay home and socially distance themselves when out of the house to get essentials. Unlike our country, where we look at mask compliance as "taking our freedom away" they look at it as their government trying to protect them from getting sick and/or dying. A lot of Asian countries have already had to deal with other viral outbreaks that hit hard so they know the risks involved in NOT wearing masks. We're just stupid and have a populace that seems to be trending towards being anti science and anti health precautions. Did Bill harp about "herd immunity" and praise that great Swedish model that is falling apart now with high COVID 19 infections and hospitalizations?

There was a tiny bit of discussion between Nance & Sullivan, but most of the show consisted of monologues - Bill, Rice, Sullivan , Nance & Will, with Bill disengaged from his guests and audience.

I'm sure the same demographic Bill has been dumping on for years is going to do exactly what he says. Look up the word "tone deaf" and you'll find Bill's smug face right next to it.

The good news is that he's getting clobbered on Twitter for saying that stupid shit.

To be fair, Bill actually congratulated millennials for signing up by the tens of thousands for human test trials. And yeah, he's confusing Gen Z for millennials, but he's talking about the young people volunteering to be injected with the virus in order to expedite a vaccine. He did veer a bit into his usual generalizations about young people and then the subject more or less changed to "we need to open up the economy" but this wasn't just another rant about millennials.

I just disagree with most of what he said. Whenever he tells other people the way they should be handling themselves during this, my thought is always "You first, Bill." Not that I want any harm to come to him, but it's easy to tell othes that they should be putting themselves in the line of fire.

Bill doesn't have any credibility when it comes to complaining about children, parenting or millennials/Gen Zers since he is not a parent and has no connections with anyone under the age of 50 except the young girls he "dates".

There is no to be fair because Gen Z and Millennials can not only get it and be carriers and cause a spike in increased community spread they are not immune to death or having complications that could cause a lifetime of health issues.

She answered NONE of his questions, she just kept hitting her own points.  I am sure she is a smart woman, why can't she actually answer a question?

I also enjoyed the discussion.  They absolutely disagree on points, but both respected the other.  And I think that ties into what Sullivan was trying to say - that discussion without shouting someone down/canceling them when you disagree is a good thing.

I tend to cringe when Sullivan is a guest.  He tries to dominate any discussion pounding everyone with his opinions as though they were brought down from the mount by Moses.  He often presents himself as the ultimate expert on the American condition, which he certainly is not.  I respect Malcolm Nance for engaging in a civil debate with Andrew although I suspect that if they were in the studio together, Nance might not have been so generous. When, in 2017, Nance was on with Milo Yiannopoulos after the latter was blathering on and on about the country, Malcolm asked him "are you an American?".  When Milos said no, Malcolm just said "then go f&^k yourself".  It was a classic.

Saw that Bari Weiss and Andrew Sullivan have both quit their positions.  I actually like both of them, but I know they are not fan favorites here.

They both resign then go on social media and complain about cancel culture & no one having their backs because of it. FTB.

I haven’t watch Maher since the first show back because of the utter contempt he has for his peer group (boomers like me.)

How can they fight cancel culture now that they have cancelled themselves?  Will they be appearing on Bill's show every week?
