Scarlett45 April 11, 2020 Share April 11, 2020 Quote So.... I went ahead and watched the series since I requested this, and my urge to talk about it has waned. So unless someone else is interested, Isuppose there's no reason to create the topic. @Jane Tuesday I am watching and enjoying the show quite a bit. Currently on episode 5, and I have to say Cartwright gave Martha the short end of the stick. I 100% understand he wasn’t going to leave his wife and it was just a thing (as did Martha) and I understand why she didn’t want to be be under his thumb and his mistress on a more permanent basis, but he should’ve been sending her a decent amount of money for Jenie as well as getting her that job. It was socially expected that if your mistress or “fling” became pregnant, as a “gentleman” you supported the child. Yes the child’s social status had more to do with whom the mother was but sending the mother money for the child’s basic upkeep was the bare minimum in this time period for a man of means. And Martha is a smart woman she should’ve taken the cash. I don’t think Mrs Cartwright had ill intentions towards Martha or Jenie (I do think she would’ve treated the girl well) but I also understand why Martha wanted to keep her child. A job at the home for unwed mothers would be an easier job for Martha than cleaning/serving at the club where she would likely to be sexually harassed by patrons and then get blamed for it. 1 Link to comment
