S01.E01: Heidi and Tim Are Back

Martha's taste is definitely not my style, but I actually thought the looks they showed of hers in the intro at least showed promise.  I could see how she was picked, and I'm not sure the show could have predicted how spectacularly she flamed out and seemed overwhelmed by the process.

Overall, I liked it, but my bar is rather low for creative "make something" reality shows.  I watch about all of them.  I really didn't get the point of the Heidi/Tim in Paris scenes.  We saw the designers at different Paris landmarks, and that was enough to showcase Paris.  Heidi and Tim were my least favorite thing about Project Runway at the end of their runs.  I like Christian and Karlie so much more.

I liked it enough to watch again. Tim gave good advice to Martha about that awful dress. She ignored it so I hoped she’d be out. The dress looked like something I’d see at that Justice children’s store. Tim was right. It did look like the daughter’s dress!

I didn’t like the white and red dress. It was just weird-looking to me and didn’t look like something many women could wear. Also thought the sneakers-type shoes looked bad with it and the black outfit. 

I liked Esther’s pants but the dress was a little too simple for me. 

I liked the green flowy thing but it should’ve been had a nude lining or leggings under it. Something. Maybe a fancy swimsuit cover-up? It’s too sheer to wear on its own. Loved the color though. 

I can’t remember the designer’s name but I thought the two black dresses were boring. Don’t understand why he was praised. 

The black leather-looking skirt was way too short and too tight. 

Love Nicole Richie’s outfit. Naomi Campbell remains gorgeous. The French Vogue judge scared me. 

I kind of liked hearing the judges react to the designs as model came down the runway, although it was a little distracting. 

Why did Heidi and TIm leave PR? Is there a thread that explains it?

I thought it was hilarious when Martha was so excited seeing her designs go down the runway and the best Tim could say was great choice with the sneakers.  Then she gleefully mentioned that she did keep the blue and he had a look on his face like yeah dope bad move.  Her stuff was ridiculous. And I don't know why but her whole look in general irritates me.  It looks like she fell asleep with her sunglasses on in the sun or put concealer under eyes without doing any other makeup.

So Esther is  going to be in one of those designers who only uses black because it's just soooooooooo edgy?  I was meh on her designs

It’s completely overproduced. With soundtracks, fancy cinematography. You can tell Amazon threw a shitload of money at this, but to not much success. Disappointed they only talked to 3 or 4 designers at the end. I wanted to see more evaluation. I’m sorry but Nicole Richie is a moron and has no business being there. 

And Martha, yeah bye.

Yeah, I want every single one of the designers facing the panel.  Every single one of them being evaluated without being told until every critique are finished where they stand.  Bring up their winning look along with those on the edge.  It feels very anti-climatic and for as showy as this cinematography is, I don't like them being in a backroom either.  I'd rather there be some sort of stage where they have the models in front of them while they are evaluated.  

On Martha, anyone else think she looks like the low-rent, poor man's Blake Lively?

Well that was....different. In the beginning I thought Heidi might be a tad tipsy. Tim seemed excessively dour. Maybe he’s just too old for this, he’s half a grimace away from telling a designer to get off his lawn. 

And as a seamstress, I think what draws me to to shows like this and PR, NiF, and GBSB is the sewing. There’s almost no sewing in this one, so I probably won’t continue.

I like Tim and Heidi but so far not thrilled. I understand that in the real world people communicate by email and text, but television is a visual medium. Part of why I watch these shows is to see the creative process, how the patterns and draping work etc.  No issues with seamstresses per say, but having no visual of the collaboration process takes something away for me.

I also don’t agree that these designers are professional and the designers on PR are all amateurs. On all of the designer shows there is a mix of people with varied levels of success. I did not like either of Esther ‘s looks and they didn’t seem  innovative. I will still watch because I finished Next In Fashion and need my fashion fix.

The big thing that bothers me about this show is when the judges criticize the sewing skills. Let's not forget that the big premise of this show is that all the sewing is done by seamstresses and not the designers. Also, the designers are not present to oversee the garments being sewn, so it's all just a crapshoot. Sure, they may be able to make small alterations here and there, but the bulk of it is out of their control.

I just want to give them a Cher slap whenever one of the judges point out the poor construction job,

I like that all of the designers seem to be getting along, unlike some seasons of PR, but the previews of upcoming shows look like things are going to change.

Is Naomi Campbell contrary just for the sake of being contrary?

I like Sander's personality, but, why the stick?

I honestly liked this. Sure, it's not perfect, but I will always love Tim Gunn, and I do think he has a sweet, believable rapport with Heidi. Tim to me doesn't seem to have changed at all -- he's informed, smart, but always kind.

I love the use of seamstresses, and I also love the challenge that these designers have to communicate what they want in writing, and clearly. I think it adds to the show's attempt to bring us artists who will also helm successful brands, which is why I'm also enjoying the conversations with the judges.

I agree with those who wish we could see more feedback and judging, though -- I hate that we don't see feedback on as many designs as we used to on Project Runway.

But I'm in. This world is insane and stressful right now, so Tim Gunn being funny and kind while people make pretty clothes? I'm in.

So I live in a Southern city similar to Richmond, where Martha is from. Her style to me is very typical of the kind of designers who work the mainstream south and capitalize on those who want to look trendy Southern. It's not my thing -- to me, it looks like stuff on the floor at Belk. There is very little creativity to that look. It's kind of the "expected" thing -- like a Lily Pulitzer knock-off with bows. NOT IMPRESSIVE. But those kinds of designers make a lot of money down here and a lot of wealthy white women like that look.

I was hoping to see an interaction between the seamstresses and the designers, but I am not surprised they were not shown.  It's couture's dirty little secret that nowadays the seamstresses for all these great French and Italian houses are actually Chinese immigrants working for far cheaper wages than French and Italians. (A family member is Chinese and owns a business in Shanghai).  My family believes COVID, for example, was brought back to Italy by the seamstresses even though Italy tried to spin the story that it was tourists... 

I'm also disappointed that we didn't see the BEST design--that white dress with the red cummerbund whose skirt was being held up with the big bridal gown-style arm loop. That looked amazing for the 5 seconds we saw it.

My understanding was that there is a leather factory in Northern Italy that employees a lot of people from the Wuhan Province, which is consistent with your information.

Late to the game here, but still wanted to throw my 2 cents in...

Overall, not bad.  I love the design studio itself, and I liked that they encouraged the designers to get out of the studio for the design portion.  A little fashion and a little travel porn go well together.

Heidi really bugs with the ONE MILLION... wait for it... DOLLARS!  Um, is "dollars" supposed to be a surprise?  Did we think this would be pesos or yen?  I mean, ok, they're in Paris so I suppose it could be Euros, but that's really not that much different.  I just feel the emphasis on "dollars" was so weird. 

I also wish they would have shown, somehow, Esther's original vision/concept vs. what the seamstress created.  That drama did not make good tv because we couldn't understand it.  I think of some of GBBO's moments where a baker's creation went wrong and they had to turn it into something else.  But we had the original sketch to compare against and could see what they were going for.

If I could, please, just pile on to the Martha hate.  UGH.  I see her as a Betsy Johnson wannabe combined with Justice for Girls.  I guess I really don't understand fashion at all, because I don't know how that dress was "runway" in any way shape or form.  But, I'll give her credit for 2 things:  1) her two pieces were related, and looked like part of a collection.  OK, maybe too related in that mommy/daughter kind of way, but she followed directions which I think only about 1/2 the designers did.  2) the "accessible" look was accessible.  I actually liked the palazzo pant, high waist and bandeau in front but full back look. 

Other reasons I guess I don't understand fashion:  I couldn't tell the difference between most of the "runway" and "accessible" looks.  I liked Josh's 2 pattern dress. I can see that going in Macy's and I would buy it, but the judges dissed it.  The weird thing with the bridal trail loop and ruffle front... how is that "accessible"??? 

And I don't understand Jasmine being eliminated, especially with Martha staying in.  Yeah, the runway look was totally see through.  But I've seen that before on runways - totally sheer blouses are the norm some years.  That's runway - something 99.9% of the population wouldn't actually wear, but with a tweak or two it could be.  I thought both of her dresses were gorgeous, and the fact that she's designing sexy, revealing dresses for all sizes should be commended.  How the judges didn't "get" her concept is beyond me. 

I was able to find Esther's winning dress on Amazon (not in stock).  From the reviews, it sold for $70, and most reviews said it was crap construction. 

I'll keep watching.  It's entertaining enough, and somehow it makes me feel better to have totally different opinions than supposedly fashionable people.

I think Martha was cast for the "drama" but she really did not turn out to be that interesting. Her skills were so subpar compared to the other contestants that it was ridiculous.

Just watching this now. 

Martha’s grade school girl dress was just disturbing. I hate it when grown women are infantilized. Can’t little girls have something that’s just theirs without creepy adults invading their space? Please get rid of her soon.

That Roitfeld judge looks like she hasn’t had bathed in weeks and her eyebrows are out of control. I wouldn’t want my professional fashion work to be judged by someone with questionable hygiene.
