I should clarify that since I work for the gov't, we have nice parties, but we have to pay for them.

We used to get a pizza party or a wing party for the top 5 performers. They owe me like a years worth of wings. Mostly it was just an hour off the phones. I have gotten a $10 gift card and then the other day I noticed a $.72 credit or somthing in my direct deposity. I assumed it was a correction, they recently screwed up our bonus saturday money but it was a $10 bonus that they paid out separately...that also got taxed and they took out 401K so I ended up with 72 cents of my fabulous "reward".

Maybe they should have given your reward some of the Viagra...?  😁

What’s y’all’s standard going-away gift?  Ours varies from office to office.  In the regional office I worked in for years the standard departure gift was a leather attaché.  I knew one guy in that office who retired and came back several times - he had about 4 of them, a matched set.  Retire from the HQ office, and the standard gift is a Navajo blanket.

Meanwhile - in the course of my career with the government I’ve changed jobs 4 times so far, and at none of my three departures have I gotten so much as a goodbye lunch.  So fuck ‘em.

ETA: In other news, it’s been three days since my first shot without so much as a fever or a sniffle.  So yay on that.

My dad got a watch. Well you got a watch at 25 year anniversary. So he got that. It wasn't like a rolex but they slapped a diamond logo thingy on it. I did go see what a pawn shop would give me one time (Wasn't really gonna sell it but not like it's sentimental to me.) but they were gonna give me $60 hahahahhahaha

I can get you a good deal on a navajo blanket! Aunt Phyllis makes them. :D

We don't really have a standard. I think lately it's been a gift card. They used to give GPS (GPSesses?) and the joke was "now that he's retired, where is he going?"

Being that it's NY, Navajo blankets are NOT given.

Usually, they have a big lunch in the building, then the person's closer circle will have a smaller lunch in a restaurant nearby.

Do you get the big sheet cake? I've never worked anywhere that gets those. I always work in small companies.

Come on! You can probably get a blanket for $24 worth of beads. Geddit? (wypeepol stole manhattan for beads with the natives)

Oh, we're big on sheet cake. All sizes of sheet cake. Someone has a baby, gets engaged or comes back from surgery, we have sheet cake and a vegetable tray from Costco.

I always wanted to get in a food  fight with a big sheet cake. Or a food  fight, period, that I don’t have to clean up. And I used to think those little vegetable trays or crudités were useless. Now I like em. I want a cute lil gherkin or some nuts and cheese. And you know what? A charcuterie board a frikkin expensive. I ain’t feeding you no fancy cheese. You gone get some American cheese slices and I’ll be hoarding the good stuff.

In a year, I've missed at least 4 work parties.  Our annual staff picnic, two people's going away parties, and the Hanukah/staff recognition award party, which would have been MY party, dammit!  😄

They did provide us food for the staff picnic and Hanukah parties, one of which was delivered by a member of management and the other we had to pick up.

I work in a Jewish organization, so food is a very important part of what we do.

In junior high there were food fights all the time. I vividly remember a glob of tuna was tossed up at the ceiling in 7th grade, where it stuck. Next year, it was still there, although a different color.

I can eat appetizers and finger food all day long. I'll stand there and graze until I'm sick.

Have you ever heard of an all you can eat KFC? I never had or have to this day, I was in Dubai on a stopover and came across it in the city, dear God, I ate so much they had to open the double doors and roll me out, I was ‘chicken bound’ for about two days, it was the best $5 I ever spent 🐓

In a former role I had to order Kosher meals when appropriate and the protocol had me absolutely captivated. I would order from a Kosher deli in Brookline and then I had to present the meal to the intended guest for inspection and opening. We served in our corporate dining room and the Kosher guest's spot had to have all disposable dishware and cutlery. Thankfully I had two refrigerators at my disposal and the resources I needed to get it right. Hospitality and making people feel welcome was my favorite part of that job (healthcare sales).

ETA: I couldn't shake hands with said guest either because of custom and culture. It was fascinating to learn all of the guidelines I had to follow! I loved it.

Also ETA: I once had to set up a prayer room for Muslim guests - also really cool to learn about and carry out.

I have learned a ridiculous amount working for a Jewish organization.  I thought I knew all about Judaism, but boy, was I wrong!  Even though about a third of our staff is not Jewish, fully half of the Jewish staff doesn't keep Kosher, and of the half that do keep Kosher, only 3 keep strictly Kosher, all of our meals are Kosher to the highest degree, no matter what. Even if the strict Kosher staff are not present.  I've learned to tolerate faux sour cream.

Of course, I would never work anywhere else.  They tend to treat their employees very, very well.  They've even offered to find vaccines for those that want them.

Our wholly trustworthy politicians have just voted to extend the dubious, very questionable lockdown laws for another six months. The riots and civil ‘disobedience’ shown over the last couple of weeks will, I fear, pale into insignificance compared to what is to come. The ordinary citizenry are just about reaching the end of their tethers with this bullshit, the once great, admirable British Police force, have never been held in such low regard or distrust by such a large percentage of the population. It takes a lot to worry me, it really does, yet I am genuinely worried about the next twelve months and what those months may bring.

Over here in the colonies, things are starting to open up. The vaccine roll out has gone better than I thought it would. The mayor said city workers are going to start to be phased into returning to work in May. My agency said it'll probably be later for us.

I'm of two minds. I'd like to see things open up, but I don't want to start to see another surge. 🤷‍♂️

I thought there were quite a few states that were fully open, in Florida I’ve read that it’s life as normal there yet they have no more cases than those in lockdown. What I don’t get is that the ‘vaccine’ doesn’t stop people contracting or passing Covid on to others, protect and isolate if necessary the medically vulnerable and the older generations, but let those it won’t affect to any great degree get the country functioning again. Many of the shops and businesses closing down will never open again. As the Police are behaving like the Gestapo, if we have a hot summer things are going to get very interesting.

6 months? I'm skeptical that we are close to the "end" of this situation but I can see where that's frustrating. I got my vaccine thursday and while I know that's not an excuse to go nuts, I'll still be cautious, wear a mask, I dang sure aint getting on an airplane anytime soon but I would think at least it's the beginning of the endish. What percent would you say is vaccinated in the UK? USA is 14%. We are now opened up to anyone over the age of 16 (where I'm at)  Our mask mandates etc haven't been lifted. I think all the spring breakers in florida weren't exactly invited. I don't think they "opened" people just swarmed. I do feel like everybody is going stir crazy and it's getting nutty but I'm an introvert, I hate people and don't go anywhere anyway so quarantine life is much like my regular life. hahahahaha

Out of a population of 68 million, about 30 million have had at least one jab, a few mill have had two. I thought Florida was operating normally even before the hordes descended and as for getting on a plane, the carrot was dangled by saying we might be able to travel towards the end of May, now news is ‘leaking’ that it won’t be until August, ish. That’s if there are any planes to board, a second no fly summer will surely see the end of some operators and more travel companies 😔

Yeah, I was mostly just making fun of Florida, but seriously. 100,000 young people descend on South Florida and party without masks, and now there's an uptick in Covid cases. Almost like there's a correlation.

From Monday the 12th of April the country will be,

“Reopening shops, gyms, zoos, holiday campsites, personal care services like hairdressers and of course beer gardens and outdoor hospitality of all kinds.”

Arriving not a moment too soon, and after enduring several months of living like Dr Livingstone, hacking my way through the deepest, darkest African undergrowth, I’ll finally be able to get my back, sack and crack waxed 🥳, as long as the poor girls get not only the Covid, but Tetanus and Rabies jabs as well, we’ll all be laughing 😁

The only problem is, and it’s a biggie, is we still won’t be able to sit INSIDE pubs or restaurants 🙄 i know it never rains in England, but what do we do when the very rare shower occurs? I’ll be as smooth as a baby’s bum, but will still have to sit in front of the TV eating my King Prawn red curry and pineapple fried rice 😱

They haven't set up the tents like we have? They kicked out the parking spaces out front of restaurants and set up tarp/tents to sit. OUR weather gets to be too hot and bugs eat you alive, I don't want to sit outside in the summer. But YOUR weather isn't always pleasant either. Those that already had outdoor dining have just been doing what they do but everywhere else looks like ET when the house got all tented up and the government came to take the alien to examine.

Unfortunately tents have walls and a roof, which rather makes the whole dining experience no less dangerous to Mankind than your average indoor all you can eat buffet.

Regarding our predictable, reliable weather, we’ve just experienced a lovely warm Easter weekend. Unfortunately however, on this very Tuesday afternoon it actually snowed where I live, Liverpool, it didn’t snow a lot, but rather makes a mockery of the Al Fresco dining hopes for this summer  🙄

Since the 12 march 2020 I have not spoke about this subject anywhere except for a few relatives in private. But it is really getting into me.

I live in the woods with a lake nearby.  I hold myself to go by the lake after the curfew even if it is only 270 meters away from my home,  I don't have a dog and the fine is pretty high you know.  I am alone and no one is visiting me for the same reasons.  But at the same time I see all the people from Montreal going to their rbnb around that lake not caring at all about the rules.

That's all I have to say.

Good idea! Go all out and buy an actual leash. Or you could disguise yourself as a bear, like Nicholas Cage in "The Wicker Man".

I'm very Cage averse. Also Kevin Costner averse. I do not know what they did to highly offend me so. I want to watch Yellowstone because people tell me it's fantastic but COST-NERRRRRRRRRR! And one of my favorite movies of all time is Raising Arizona, despite Cage not because of him.

Not a fan of Cage. Costner has been in a couple of my favorite movies - "Dances with Wolves", the excellent "Open Range", and "The Untouchables" athough of course, Sean Connery stole the show in the latter. "Mr. Brooks" (2007) with Costner in the title role, is quite good. Even Dane Cook, someone I find completely intolerable, is fine here as those qualities that make him intolerable to me work in this movie. The scenes with Costner and William Hurt are worth the price of admission. Unfortunately, the Demi Moore character is just unnecessary and kind of annoying.

I might drown you. I don't know why Costner bugs me so much. I know he was the "body" in "The Big Chill" and my favorite joke is that it's my favorite role of his. I think with "waterworld" and "The Postman" he just got into this "epic" movie genre where it was like he was trying to recreate the feeling of "Dances with Wolves" ie critically acclaimed etc and I couldn't tell you if Waterworld was good or not, don't think I've seen the entire thing, sat through Postman and was like "the mail? the MAIL????? the mail is gonna save us?"
