Talking the Virus: So Far the One Without Zombies

Recommended Posts

I've been in touch with my friend in New mexico, asking whether or not they think the balloon fiesta will be affected. It was virtual last year. I'm still going on my trip but I believe I will drive and not fly. That's a wasted plane ticket but it was $89. Everything I see about flying just freaks me out. We will still do something for her birthday whether it's the balloon fiesta or not. My niece may be going into lockdown at the prison, as in no visitors so I may not go to Phoenix. Many things up in the air on that one but I would be ok if the fiesta was cancelled I don't care for that many people anyway, even if this is outdoors.

Here is both the optimism of the navajo people and the bafflement. I was going online to purchase my general admission tickets. She says "oh hey, just buy all of them" her mom, sister, niece etc. Now, there are probably close to 48 people  in her family so it is NOT the extended family. This got me in trouble 20 years ago, I arranged for her to come visit me back in the day. I was paying half her ticket and in the back of my head I acknowledged that I may end up paying all of it. About $350 at the time. The cousin/sister/friend pipes up "I can come too, go ahead and get mine" They were going to pay me when they got here. Morgan Freeman voice "There was no payment". This is a navajo thing, an invitation does not have to be extended, if Marcy was coming then clearly anyone else was invited also. This stems back to rez days when it was 60 miles to town and only 1 dude had a truck that was running, so if he was headed to town everyone hopped in. There is a share and share alike mentality. They'll eat your food, hop in your ride and it's kinda rude of you to ask about the $800 you spent on plane tickets. It was survival back in the day, if you had it you shared. I may not get my money back on these tickets but  it's $100 total and they have paid for the hotel. But they have faith in me that I'm going to show up. It's kind of a compliment if they do want to hop in your ride, or take your food. You're a member of the tribe, they're not just jacking your ride at a stop light.

Also why covid tore them up, there is no such thing as leaving granma or uncle alone if they're sick. you're all coming to take care of them and you're all eating the soup to make them better. Everybody gets in the truck to go to the doctor, there is no isolation

So you're going for all 4 days? There are a few bands on there I'd like to see. I would go Friday and Sunday.

Yup!  I’m all shot up and will be all masked up.

Honestly though, the thought of being around that many people terrifies me. It's nice they're putting up all those COVID rules, but how strictly will they be enforced?

I may have to stay out of the pits this year, but hey - them’s the breaks.  Worth it to hear live music again and re-socialize with a few thousand close friends I haven’t met yet, even if we’re doing so from a few extra feet apart.  😎

I had read that the navajo nation was over 90% vaccinated and last year in November, over 93% of eligible voters turned out to vote. They rode their horses and had a whole posse. They sure are patriotic to a government thats screwed them over an over. They are huge on thanksgiving, which I've joked with my friend Marcy about, they saved us and we rewarded them with trying to genocide them every chance we got.

The best way to deal with the government?  Become the government.  😉

I was pretty sure that’s where it was. I was still baffled that in the year 2020 we were still living the eminent domain lifestyle. I actually looked up kinder Morgan and they purchased El Paso natural gas for $22 billion <—beeellion! I don’t know why that blew my mind. But if that’s 20 years ago then I understand the money for this Alaskan pipeline. El Paso natural gas essentially had pipelines running from Oklahoma and Texas to California. They built their pipelines in the 1920’s-30’s. That’s why I always lived in such remote places. They escorted the oil from Texas and Oklahoma through New Mexico and Arizona to California. By the time It got to California it was gasoline. There were brief incidences of black market gasoline where persons were getting their cars high on their own supply. Our final move involved some dude burning himself with “drip” gas so everybody got in trouble. My dad was very angry that he got punished and never participated. But many lost their jobs.

Well it's official - back to full-time at the office on 9/13. 😥

Goodbye, soft pants.

I saw a good one the other day and obviously should have written it down. It was like prison pants. but better than that. My condolences to you. Are your kids schooling from home or gone back to it? We all started back physically in class and some have pulled the plug already or gone hybrid.

NYC schools are set to open the same day, 9/13. Everyone is expected to return to full time in-person learning. They just put out a mandate that all school staff must be vaccinated.

Should be interesting to see how it goes.

My 78ish year old aunt has caught the rona. She's been in a rehab facility because she broke her hip. She's set to go home Friday, I told her stay mad at least that long. She can't change facilities because there are no beds anywhere. She waskinda saying she doesn't know what the point is to fight. She does not sound good at all but I told her she's too stubborn to die. As long as she's mad at the nurses or facility and has a reason to go home she can keep kicking ass. I may have to swing by Houston to visit her if she makes til October for my trip. Have a bother in law whos a retired cop, he worked some kind of chemical spill years ago and had to retire because of lung damage, he's got the rona. He's a large, strapping youngish  guy, aside from the lung thing, which on an ordinary day you'd never tell he has a "disability" but obviously in times of rona it's kicking his ass. He's 2 steps forward and 1 step back.

Had either of them been previously vaccinated?

Just as an informational note: the current delta variant is something in the neighborhood of 3x as communicable as the original COVID-19 strain, and many folk don’t immediately realize this also impacts the efficacy of the vaccinations as well; a vaccine which was 90% effective at blocking the original strain may immediately be knocked down to 70% effectiveness against delta, simply because the variant can latch onto your system so much easier.
Good news is, the vaccine will still significantly lessen the severity of any such breakthrough infection.

I feel like that since she's calling me and supposedly released to go home friday then she was never ventilated etc. I would assume they'd go ahead and give her the booster but what do I know. It's everything else that's dragging her down. The hip, her husband just died 4 months ago, her attitude is what alarmed me. She sounded defeated and said thngs like I don't know why I bother/what's the point. I just told her stay mad so she gets home and then hopefully amongst her kids and grandkids she perks up. She lives with my cousin Tom so she's not alone, I heard her arguing with the nurse person, they brought her a sleeping pill and she said she didn't want it. I think she's on the other side of the covid but she can't take any more hits, she absolutly said it's the worst thng she's ever had and she fully gets that it is not a joke.

Rod, I don't know, to look at him you'd never guess he's a immuno compromised. I don't know if he would have been an anti vaxxer. He's a giant burly guy and looks like he can crush you with his thumb. I don't know what he inhaled but it took him out of the police. He can still do other stuff and he still works out but he would never pass the physicals again. but it's clear as far as breathing goes, doesn't matter how tough you look, it will take you down.

At the request of several of you, we're starting a separate pullout thread on coronavirus discussion: how it's affecting you, what you're seeing, whether years and years of watching this show have taught us anything about surviving it, guarding your toilet paper hoard against dickish scavengers, whatever.  Please confine related discussion to this thread and out of Small Talk.
