S08.E07: It's Not About the Pastor

Oh, I am not saying I blame Ariana for the wedding itself!  I’m not saying she should have had some big The Graduate moment and banged on the glass to stop the wedding.

I’m saying she is to blame—or she is responsible, rather—for her own situation, as a bridesmaid in what she considered a wedding tainted by a pastor who she thought was morally repugnant and bigoted against her.  I’m saying she was not helpless in her situation.  She “ignored the very real info” for months, when she had plenty of time to see her way out of the wedding situation.  I’m saying she could have spoken up and said, “I won’t be a part of this” and let the chips fall where they may with Jax and Brittney, rather than hemming and hawing and acting like a nervous little girl two weeks before the wedding.  I’ve never seen her act that way.  She was less nervous to stand up to Lisa last season than Brittney this season.

And I think a lot of it was to shape a narrative.  This was clearly to be the episode where the anvil dropped and everyone went apeshit about the wedding.  Where would the theater be if Ariana pulled Brittney aside before shooting in January and voiced her objections and made her intentions not to be a part of this known then?

I feel like I don’t have anything else left to say with regard to Ariana’s behavior vis a vis the  wedding, so I’ll agree to disagree.

Unless she really wants to go to the parties in which case she should break up with James and go be free to do what ever she wants.

Lala still loathes her, and as long as her BJ's keep providing the Chucklefucks with the potential for private jets, nothing Raquel can do will make them welcome her into the group if Lala says no.  If she dumps James, there's really no need to keep her around - she's just another SURver, and the most vapid one at that.  Notice that she wasn't placed in the opening credits even though Beau, Dayna and Matt are all getting billing even though the latter two are in their first season.

Do we know if James and Raquel broke up?  If so, they'll no doubt minimize her the rest of the season.

And by the way Peter, who the hell invites one-half of a couple to a birthday party?  "Hi, you can come, but your boyfriend can't.  I'm sure he'll be just fine with it."

Scheana also only invited Schwartz and not Katie, and Lisa was talking about how, if Ken went to a wedding without her, she would be kicking him out.

That, to me, is the real, true Brittany.  I've never been a big fan of hers, and thought that she was putting on a "sweet Southern girl" front for a long time.  IMO, in reality, she is someone who has no qualms about getting nasty quickly.  I don't buy for one minute that she is having wedidng jitters or nerves or whatever they are calling it.  If she and Jax last more than two years, it will be a miracle.

I'm so over all of this Jax/Brittany wedding stuff - even more over it than I was with Schaena's wedding.

I will never believe that an adult woman is as sweet as she portrays herself to be, if she is in a relationship with someone knowing that he's a piece of shit.  Yes, yes, i know that there are women who married a shitty guy because he was completely normal before the wedding and he only presented his true self after they were married, but that's actually quite rare.  There are ALWAYS signs.  I knew from the get-go that Brit was lying about who she was.

Lisa doesn't care about the LGBTQ community.  She just loves how much money they can make for her.  She and Ken made their fortune from running gay bars in the UK.  It's not hard for someone as devious as Lisa to fake being nice and caring.  I mean, she does it with everybody, and we've all seen it.

So here’s my other thing about the “nobody gets to have an opinion because Brittany and Jax are being ridiculous” theme. What opinions does anyone need to have? I get having an opinion on a homophonic pastor, no one should feel pressured to just be ok with that, but other than that...what are all these opinions that everyone has been oppressing? That Jax and Brittany are terrible people and a terrible couple? That there are too many wedding events? That they shouldn’t get married? Don’t be friends with them, don’t go, mind your business,  in that order. I would totally be on board with that because all of this is ridiculous and Jax and Brittany are terrible, but the idea that a grown adult needs to have an option on someone else’s wedding? Why?

I am not trying to be mean at all - for a young woman, Brittany weight is all over the place. This last episode she looked healthy but probably 15-20 lbs from when she first appeared on VPR. Last time she was on WWHL she was up 20-25 lbs from this last episode. Just taken aback with her yo yo dieting.

Given how toxic James is to Raquel, literally that convo in the kitchen should be used to teach people about emotional abusive relationships, anytime Raquel is away from James is a good thing.

Homophobic Pastor-gate has been well covered so I’m going to backtrack to my favorite moment at the princess party. And that was the look on Scheana’s face when she heard that Lance Bass was going to officiate. She tried for happiness for  Brittany but her expression sort of just melted into a grimace as she looked around at all the princesses (not for her) and knew a celebrity (albeit very minor) was going to marry them.

Made me chuckle with glee.

think the blame can go around.  Out of the four of them, I blame Brittney most heavily, by far, for reasons I’ve already stated.  Jax is just an ass who has no morals, who will go along with anything that is convenient for him.  I blame Jax the second-most for shutting down Sandoval for trying to talk to him about it.

I am going to go THERE.  Sorry, I am.  I have a Southern Baptist SIL who believes this.  Why would I want to change her?  This is what her religious beliefs teach her.  I love her and we can agree to disagree on this.

As I think more about this, where are hijabs in Lisa's restaurants?  Hmmm?  Seriously, where are the religious Muslims?  Oh, wait, Lisa is intolerant of them, right?  How about Hassidic Jews?

I'm fine with gay marriage and I'm fine with those who aren't.  Just spare me the bullshit claptrap.  Lisa, hire a muslim who wears a hijab.  I dare you. Don't need another lecture on how intolerant people are.  Look in the mirror.

Seriously religious Orthodox people are invisible on TV regardless if they are Jewish, Muslim, Catholic or Mormon unless they are villains or objects of derision. LVP would never hire a real religious person of any sect. That’s not her brand. That’s not Bravo’s brand. That is not acceptable on television these days.

I'm no fan of LVP but you seem to be implying that "real religious" people are all homophobic and... I am here to say that isn't true. I also don't know that we can automatically assume that a Muslim woman wearing a hijab is homophobic, either. That's painting with an extremely broad brush.

I am saying that the traditional attitudes of all Orthodox religion as are treated as homophobia. No truly devout person of any religion would put themselves in the environment at SUR for a whole host of reasons. LVP a would not hire them. That’s why you don’t see any of them on this show or really any BRAVO show.

Tsk, tsk. Next week:

Spoiler

Katie was gleefully smirking when Max denied that Dayna was his girlfriend; he was really tired, yo. Might be editing. Might be Katie enjoying the idea of Dayna’s future disappointment/embarrassment, which is difficult to justify. I don’t think Dayna has done anything yet to warrant Katie’s schadefreude.

Yeah, agreed.  I mean, I do agree that people from more conservative or traditionalist backgrounds are unlikely to be a part of VPR because it isn't the scene they want to be a part of.  But this pastor isn't espousing "Orthodox" views, he's espousing hateful views, and as a Christian myself, I reject them as part of "Christian values."  And no, I am not required to "tolerate" such views belief with the idea that my tolerance must allow for everything. I also don't tolerate racism, xenophobia, and sexism because my value system isn't about "tolerance," it's about accepting that differences that someone can't control or change - their race, their sexual orientation, their gender identity - should be valued.

Do I think that LVP looks at supporting the LGBTQ community as mostly a part of her brand? Sure. Like I said, I'm not a LVP fan and think she can be calculated. But I can't blame her for not wanting to associate with this pastor and for telling Jax and Brittany she doesn't support their choice of pastor.

Honestly I actually thought Jax said it best which was basically 'believe in whatever you want, just keep it off social media"

I also believe that you can like a person but hate their beliefs.

But also believe that Jax and Brittney probably needed to be a little more self aware because of who they are.

And are we going to have to hear every episode this season about how Adriana likes boys and girls? And now the new girl too?  If you're in a serious, committed relationship, one where you would probably get married if you believed in it, do you need to constantly announce that you are bi?  I feel like you can stand beside the community without having to shout I'M BI - I'M BI - I'M BI, all the time.

I’m kind of confused- why would a woman in a long term, mostly monogamist, heterosexual relationship be coming out as bisexual??! Has Ariana ever actually been in an adult relationship with another woman, or is her experience limited to Lala going down on her in the backseat?

They were talking about "Still the One" by Shania Twain, which was a big hit in the late 1990s. The first line is "Looks like we made it/look how far we've come, my baby."  Ironically, she did not make it with the husband she was talking about in that song - he ended up cheating on her with her best friend, they divorced, and the husband ended up with the BF while Shania herself ended up with the BF's divorced husband!

Your sexual orientation doesn't change just because you are in a relationship. I have a friend who has been married (to a man) for more than 20 years who identifies as a bisexual because that is what her orientation is. And not being in a relationship doesn't not make her bisexual. She is likely someone who identifies as a bisexual who is generally more attracted to men than women, and that's fine. You don't have to be equally attracted to each gender to identify as bi.

Yeah, I’m a little confused as to why Arianna is coming out now, but not because of her relationship with Sandoval. I’m just surprised it would take her this long to come out. She’s 34? And doesn’t strike me as the type that would struggle so much with bisexuality, but maybe she did. Or maybe she just didn’t like to talk about it publicly because of the ways that bisexual women are sexualized as a male fantasy. It could be Sandoval was the first time she felt like she was in a relationship where her bisexuality wouldn’t become a porn thing.

Or maybe she just wants a new storyline

I really don’t care what consenting adults do in their bedroom, but since Ariana has decided to publicly “ come out” as a bisexual I have to question WHY? Not - why is she bisexual, but why come out and make a big proclamation at this time?!  Didn’t she and Sandoval just purchase a home together ( big commitment for a commitment phobic bisexual woman if you ask me) ?!

Maybe to justify her position for not marrying him after how ever long they've been together?  It's been questionable until now but now that she's out, is there more of a basis for the lack of commitment?

Not my issue.  She can do what she wants.

People come out when they are ready to come out.  Given that we know that Ariana has had issues with her sexuality before, I don't see why it is so confusing as to why she hasn't talked about it before.  She obviously has a complicated relationship with her sexuality. Furthermore, maybe part of the reason that she hasn't talked about being bisexual before is because she was afraid that the reaction would be one of skepticism.  (The fact is that bi-erasure is a real thing and lots of people - both straight and gay - have misconceptions about what it means to bi).

Anyway, I think it is perfectly valid for her to talk about her bisexuality in the context of being unhappy with this pastor's words, and I don't really see much reason to demand that she come out on my timetable, as opposed to her own.

Yes, but with more puppy showers and cocaine.

Because ultimately, that's what this boils down to: if Brittany and Jax don't marry and have at least one child, Raquel won't exist and there will be no puppy showers in the future and that brings us to the Darkest Timeline. But DJ James Kennedy doesn't want the puppy shower future, he wants the cocaine dusted future (aka The Dark but Not Darkest Timeline) so he has to stop Raquel who is just like her mother and thinks everything should be unicorns and princesses. (I think that makes Raquel the God-like figure of the future which might be the Darkest Timeline after all.)

Raquel is slightly confused because she's heard of White Kanye from her future timeline before but she's also heard of this thing called "counting" before and she's pretty sure that doesn't exist so *blink* *blink* *blinkblink*. James wasn't sure Raquel was the girl from the future that he has to stop until she wanted to have the puppy shower in this timeline but at first, he was okay with this timeline because there was still cocaine and he got to nail the hot, dumb chick but now he's back on track.

@Callaphera - will you marry me?  😉

I've been with the husband for 10 years (married for four) and I've only recently admitted to myself that I'm bisexual - and hey, I guess this is the first time I publicly said it. It doesn't change my love for the husband nor does it mean I'm going to dump him for the next hot woman that goes by but it feel good to admit it and let it be part of who I am. I've never been in a full, committed relationship with a woman either but still bisexual.

It's about being at peace with yourself more than anything.

Sorry. I read but rarely post here. And I do love me some Chucklefucks. Great TV. Though it’ll never be again like the earlier Seasons.

Hoping not against moving on from religion thing. But I can’t see anybody who’s an Orthodox Jew/Conservative Christian or Muslim (hijab wearing) wanting to work at SUR and wearing the required uniform that pretty much shows their coochie if they bend over. IMO - can’t blame LVP for that.

I try not to judge anybody for their beliefs for the most part. Even when I completely disagree. IMO - most of it is what you were brought up to believe in.

EG - I live in DC and we actually have a ton of Mormons (see Marriott Corp who’s based here). They’re fucking adorable. Sweetest, most wholesome people you’d ever meet. Mr. DC and I seriously considered going to the opening of their renovated Temple on Capitol Hill a couple of years ago, when they were handing out flyers on neighborhood street corners.

In comparison - I have a HB to Hell. Even if you think the whole backstory is a little crazy and have serious objections to some of their beliefs.

I wouldn’t let one marry me though. But I’m a Catholic (never really practicing - went to Catholic High School though) and disagree with a bunch of their shit. But still got married by a Catholic priest. So who am I to judge?

Mr. DC (former Altar boy) objected strenuously to this BTW, and immediately got shot down by my parent’s (who I rarely remembered going to Church). His parent’s go every Sunday. And volunteer.

My atheist friends got married at a church by a minister.  They're not anti-religion, but just don't believe in God.  But the church holds non-religious group events sometimes and that's how they met, so they got married there.

The lack of self-reflection in all these dumb-dumbs is truly fascinating.

Arianna might be truly depressed because she trapped herself in a monogamous heterosexual relationship with a man who does not bring her true joy, and is isolated out in the suburbs.

The two Toms own like 5% each of that resto-bar? They're not owners as much as they are mascots, and they act that way. Lisa must be very satisfied with how high those dummies jump when she snaps her fingers.

Racquel is in a toxic (maybe dangerous) relationship, but she is clearly choosing that option over not being on tv. Also, she talks like she has recently sustained a head injury. Why is it so difficult for her to form words? I really felt sorry for James after seeing how awful his parents are last season, but he is really showing his sociopathic side.

I've got nothing really to say about Jax/Britney -- maybe these two sweaty/weeping lumps deserve each other?

If Ariana is depressed, it is actually a good thing for her to be working at SUR, preferably 3+ days a week.  One of the first things you lose with depression is routine and although it's extremely difficult to muster up the energy, it is helpful to have somewhere to be on a regular basis.  It may not seem like much, but working gives you a purpose and a routine.

I also understand having situational depression and one of the most common types would be SAD - seasonal affective disorder.  It wouldn't be an issue with people living in California because there's plenty of sunshine all year 'round - even in winter.  It is a very real thing, but as the name suggests, it's seasonal, so when spring arrives, people feel better again.

During my worst periods of depression (suicidal), I didn't work and didn't have a regular routine.  I just couldn't be around people, but that may actually have been worse.  My husband was making enough for both of us and I don't really have any expenses apart from the basics and books every now and then, but I hated not being able to bring in income.  Doesn't matter what the job is, having one will make you feel productive.  Ariana is a great bartender, so having a job she's good at will be helpful.

She should definitely see a doctor.  Whether it's a chemical imbalance or something else, she needs to find out what the problem is.  No need to suffer needlessly.

I will admit up front I really don’t like Tom and Ariana. I dislike them separately, but kind of hate them as a couple. For me it all stems back to when they refused to admit they were sleeping together behind Kristin’s back and instead engaged in a whisper campaign to call Kristin unbalanced and mentally ill (likely true, not the point) to cover their own deeds. That was evil shit to me. And they’ve never really owned up to it. So I will admit I have always had the impression of them as manipulative and it does color how I view their actions now.

Which is all to say, I think Ariana and Tom are going through what they’re going through, but I also think they are extremely manipulative about how and when they act on it. I think Ariana may have some sort of depression stemming from not having much of a purpose in life and having her income tied to maintaining relationships she doesn’t want. I doubt she feels pressed to do much about it off camera. Same with TomTom. I think Sandoval saves all of his Big Boss behavior for the camera. I doubt he is that involved with TomTom otherwise.

I just think the two of them are pretty shallow people who will do ANYTHING to stay famous. They’re a more sophisticated Jax and Brittany to me.

Instead, they held off from acting on their consciences and talked behind Brittney’s back about it and then waited for Lisa to do the dirty work, so that everyone could heave a big sigh of relief that Lance Bass was going to beam in and save the day.  This made Ariana looked like a big chicken to me.

Tom & Ariana waited to bring it up ON CAMERA so that they could portray themselves as morally superior and look down on everyone else from their self-righteous perch,  Which is exactly why I dislike both of them so much.  They're constantly trying to show us how deep, interesting, amazing and awesome they are as compared to everyone else, and they don't mind stepping on their "friends" to do so.

Also, you lose the right to make fun of anyone for purchasing a builder grade furniture package when you're sleeping on a mattress on the floor.
