Episode Discussion II: The TFGH

Culture Check: How can we discuss a character's or actor's appearance without objectifying them? How can we express likes or dislikes and still respect an individual's humanity or be mindful that a character represents a person someone else might relate to or identify with?

Gio could have had a good story line if they had been able to go ahead with the recording company thing.  But when they got rid of Blaze that story went away.  I was actually looking forward to some musical interludes to give us a rest from the mob and throb stories.

What kind of flaws could lucky have? He can’t be worse than Franco.

This stupid show gets rid of Sam but keeps useless gio?

"So, you'll accept food from Josslyn, but not me?" Well, to be fair, Ric, Joss has never slipped anything into Liz's food or drinks, so...  I really wish Liz would stop accepting his invitations at all. It's clear what his intentions are, and she's smart to not want to go there with him. Also, while they absolutely had chemistry back during their first relationship, it's really just not there now for me. They just feel kind of awkward together now. Liz still has chemistry with Jason and (from the little bit we got Friday) Lucky, but I'm just not seeing it with Ric. So there's not even the excuse of undeniable chemistry to pretend all the water under that bridge doesn't exist.

So, Anna and Holly, two women who should, after decades of this kind of thing, know better, just have that conversation out in the open in a place they know is crawling with this guy's men?  What could possibly go wrong? Also, I feel like Holly's "you and Jason?" line was basically telling us all "yeah, we're going to go there with them."  Why, show? Why? Again, if there was some kind of undeniable chemistry, I could get the temptation, but there is not.

The costuming looks like they rented from a shop that caters to high school theater productions. Holly, Anna, and Jason's clothes look cheap.

That man was literally in Anna's line of sight. Even if he did duck behind a wall, she should have noticed him making his way to the entrance of the room.

Chemistry is subjective. I do see some still between Ali’s and Ric, and I see a bit with Jason and Anna. That doesn’t mean I want them to be a couple in any way, shape or form. But I think they genuinely care for each other even if only as friends.

Ric can't let go of his dream of a(nother) do-over with Elizabeth. She just seems to feel awkward with him after everything that's gone on in the past. I could see the Show teasing a Jason/Elizabeth/Lucky triangle, but ultimately Lucky still loves her whereas Jason may look longing at her wondering what could have been but he's never going to make an effort to pursue her and make her feel loved. He's too devoted to Carly and Sonny and their family to give her what she wants and needs. He's good at being a "hero" in crises/emergencies, but that's it.

I thought the Elizabeth/Lucky scene from Lucky's hallucination was excellent work from both actors. They still shine together and clearly his mind still thinks of her and Aiden as his family. Aiden is her one minor child left at home. They still have time together to get close and be a real family. With Jason and Jake, it's clear that "ship has sailed" and Jason just doesn't care that much because he was never really invested in his son to begin with. Elizabeth may not actually say it, but she obviously sees it.

I will never accept Lucky with Elizabeth again. If they go there, I'm out. Why can't she just be alone? Or find someone new? People act like Ric, Jason, or Lucky are the only options. Leaving town would be better than Lucky. Then Becky could move over to Y&R and I can stop checking in on GH forever.

This "African club" set is a Choice.

And the existence of the club is a miracle.  After all, Anna and Jason managed to find something that's "just a short flight away" from their ultimate destination.  Hardly in the neighborhood.

Anna's fully sequined gown, and the gown worn by the woman Jason displaced at the table, reminded me of the gowns worn by a good 75% of the cast at last year's Nurses Ball.  I remember thinking they must have gotten a deal.

And thanks for mentioning the music.  It's always too loud, but it was downright intrusive in a number of scenes this past week, especially in the Alexis story.  I remember thinking they were using it to substitute for the fact that they hadn't managed to convey the same sense via the writing.

She did have Franco and Finn. There aren't any available men in her age range left, are there? Isaiah looks meant for Jordan.

I'm not rooting for LL2 or Ric but Sonny and Jason are the show's OTP, so the pickings are slim. All I'll say is that the writers better make the guys work for it.

If they could please stop throwing every attractive and talented Black man who comes on this show at possibly the worst actor on the show and instead learn to dump failed characters/actors and create all-new characters of color (big lift, I know Frank), that would be fantastic. I haven't forgotten poor Zeke! There's generations of Wards out there.

They should throw him at Trina who had nothing to do except being a friend to Joss, Gio and Ava while she is grieving Spencer. He is not coming back (at least not in the in form of NAC) and it not really interesting Trina doing nothing with her character for months on end.

I don't think a Trina/Isaiah pairing would be well received today. I'm not sure how old Isaiah the character is supposed to be, but Sawandi Wilson is apparently 37. That would be a much bigger gap than other pairings people had an issue with, like Maxie with Roger Howarth's last character.

They didn't have any problems dumping all the OG Davis daughters, so recasting Jordan seems like a no-brainer. (Though she was awfully pretty with Portia's brother.)

I kinda wished there would be some chemistry between Isaiah and Elizabeth but alas...

I thought the same, and it’s the main reason I started watching again. I don’t think I can take a triangle with Jason though. I despise his character so much and while I know in the end no woman will ever mean as much to him as Carly, it won’t be fun to watch for me.

They don't do singles on this Show (unless you're a teenager or recent-ish widow/er) because Soap Operas are traditionally supposed to have couples. I doubt I'm the only viewer who felt robbed of adult Elizabeth and JJ's Lucky having a decent romance. GV's Lucky abruptly wanted them to get back together in the aftermath of fearing for Jake when Edward lost control of a car during a medical emergency. Elizabeth had slept with Nikolas by then and Elizabeth and GV-Lucky didn't put in the work to heal and get back together. So they basically got insta-engaged, but then GV was fired and JJ returned. The storyline played out like Elizabeth had become addicted to sex with Nikolas and didn't know how to be happy with sober/in recovery Lucky and he was still in love with her younger self instead of her present self. We didn't get to see them slowly fall in love again as healthier adults, who aren't clinging to the past.

At a minimum, I want to see them be friends again and develop a great co-parenting relationship of Aiden.

Finally, watched Fridays episode. Um, what’s up Portia’s crawl with Nina? Have they even shared a scene together before? Portia is worse than Mrs. Kravitz. Good lord! Portia and Curtis are soooo boring. Can they leave yesterday and not return anytime soon.

The casino and wardrobe is very 1980’s but at least they are trying.  It’s nice to see Emma Samms back but she’s a horrible actress. In the 80’s it was acceptable. Unfortunately, it’s 2024.

The Lucky and Liz stuff was nice but he can he come home already and get the balll rolling already. We’ve already seen this storyline with the returns of DZ and SB. I know it’s because of GF vacation and the hiring of nuLulu but c’mon!

Finally, I’m not sure if I’m ready for Anna to have the hots for Jason. It’s too bad Valentin isn’t on the show anymore because FH and JPS have off the charts chemistry.

I'm relieved to see other mentions of what a bad actor Emma Samms is.  I mean, it's really bad.  I know she's quite beautiful especially back in the day, and I can only assume this was considered acceptable back then, as  long as you looked good.  I find it painful to watch.

This.

I guess there are two standard options for when a character is brought back after years presumed dead, MIA, or just off canvas: you can show the character interacting with day players while trying to escape a prison, get out of a clinic, get off the fishing boat that rescued them from drowning in the South Pacific, whatever. That's the "exciting" option. Or you can just have another character answer a knock at the door and find the returning character standing there. This is the "getting on with things" option.

I prefer the latter. Even when it's a character I'm not crazy about, the best thing about having that character back will be the interactions with other familiar characters. And there's never much genuine excitement in the "exciting" option. If a random thug is pointing a gun at Lucky, no one in the audience is thinking, "I hope they didn't bring Jonathan back only to kill Lucky off in a dingy room half a world away, before he sees his family and friends again."

At least GH's versions of this go by pretty quickly. If the James Reilly of '90s Days of Our Lives were writing this story, Lucky would be scheduled to arrive in Port Charles for February 2025 sweeps. We'd spend fall and most of winter watching fake-out scenes in which he seemed to be getting away, and then we would see that he was dreaming.

Don't forget the third option: Lurking around town for weeks on end before deciding to reveal themselves.

I don't mind a bit of foreplay, as it were, but endlessly dragging out a return really kills the momentum and excitement, IMO. Most viewers these days aren't going to be surprised when a character returns, so just get on with it.

I zipped through last week's episodes, and the only ones I found interesting were the ones with-Surprise! Not!- JJ/Lucky. He's just fan-fucking-tastically amazing. And both JJ and Becky still have IT. Just like they did in that nano second scene when he returned a still alive Jake to her.

And I don't care, but I want those two to find their way BACK to each other, because everything Lucky was saying about why he left was just BULLSHIT

I don't know when Lucky left--after Shiobhan's murder? Nik left shortly after results came back that Aiden was Lucky's, right?

Oh JEEBUS CRIPES! Now the idiots in hair, have crimped Rocco's so he's also got the weird Hobbit Fodo twirls flopping over his head like Danny and Aiden have!

I've never had so much embarrassment as I did, watching Anna call Jaysus "Dahling" 🤢or that deer in the headlights look of Holly's when Anna told her about Lulu. Like that heifer cares. I thought they'd redeemed her during her last stint, when suddenly Holly was the one that Robert "loved more" which, per Sri Rao, it's Anna, but NEITHER of them deserves Robert.

Do I care about Portia, worried for some reason that Brad is back in the GH lab? Nope. She should be glad, if the switched blood tests are caught, Brad will be blamed.

Do I care about Molly and TJ, each alone and hurting? Nope. They've both been such awful people I don't feel sorry for them at all. And Molly is more tolerable talking to Dex Wood than to TJ.

But both of those were better than Carly and Brennan "flirting'.

Fun fact: A psychologist looked at how much practicing a professional musician had to do and anything over four hours doesn't help to improve.

TR sounded much stronger of voice today. I wonder if he had a chest issue earlier that made him sound so wobbly.

Shouldn't Violet be helping BL make brownies for her school's bake sale? She's old enough. Sheesh.

LOL at Trina's skepticism about Heather's test results.

Wow, Steven Lars is out of prison and settled in Sedona. How about an update on Matt Hunter?

ROBERT!!  And sharing a meal at his desk with Felicia, harking back to forty years ago, replete with a Frisco mention!  Made my day, even as I realize it might also have to make my month or three months, given how long it usually is between Robert sightings.  TR sounded strong and I loved hearing Robert's trademark sardonic wit.

Trina is smarter than her mother, immediately pointing out the flaw in the logic of the cobalt levels.

Still not sure where they're going with Gio, but I will say that Brook Lynn somehow created the runniest brownie batter I've ever seen.

I appreciate that the writers are giving us these little interlude scenes, and I will trust that there will prove to be a purpose behind each of them at some point.  But they don't feel right, not at all like the scenes we got from the last, barely-there set of writers.  I've been trying to figure out why, and all I have come up with so far is that they are coming too long after the meatier interactions that precede them, making them feel disconnected to anything before or after.

glad to get a break from Africa, especially since we know the next time we see Holly, Anna and Jason, they’re going to be in deep shit with Sidwell. Which of course will endanger lucky, further delaying his return to PC to save his sister.

Still not interested in Gio’s dead mother or who his father is. Or him for that matter. He’s a cute kid but has no purpose on the show.

I'm guessing that Portia freaked out about Brad being back because she's worried that his past will trigger an investigation into Heather's lab results.  But she's an idiot to think that no one would look into the wonky lab results anyway.  Even art major Trina thought they were weird.

They're either flat-out chem testing Molly and Dex or they just want some kind of conflict between him and Joss since now that he's not working for Sonny their foreplay of her screeching about how bad Sonny was and he needed to get out just doesn't pack the same punch.

I don't know when Lucky left--after Shiobhan's murder? Nik left shortly after results came back that Aiden was Lucky's, right?

He really is and they do.  I don't necessarily think everything Lucky said was b.s. He mentioned "darkness inside" to Luke during Geary's retirement storyline. Now he's saying to hallucination! Elizabeth that he's "flawed." Around the end of JJ's last run (when Aiden was an infant), Lucky said he didn't have the strength to get back together with Elizabeth, only to lose her again. Prior to that when Lucky told Ethan about L&L2's history as teenagers, Ethan noted "you were her hero."

Yet once Lucky got addicted to drugs and had the affair with Maxie, he was no longer her hero. He felt she proved this first with the ONS with Jason that resulted in Jake and then by her affair with Nikolas that she continued after getting re-engaged to Lucky. His heart wants to have a loving relationship with her and a great relationship with his son(s), but because he sees himself as flawed/not capable of being her "hero" anymore and the kind of father he thinks Aiden deserves, he stays away from Port Charles and hides in humanitarian work - being a "hero" to others.

^^ Is that supposed to be a good thing? Because I don't think Elizabeth deserves to be stuck with someone who never loved her for herself; he loved how he felt about himself being the hero after she was raped. It could have been Sarah or Emily in that park that night, and he would love them instead under those conditions.

Elizabeth also doesn't deserve to be with someone that needs her to be less so that he can feel better about himself. Lucky always wanting to be the hero puts Elizabeth in the position of always being the damsel. And when she doesn't fit that mold his insecurities cause him to lash out at her. How nice.

Portia is a massive bitch who freaks out about a growing number of people.  I cringe when the character comes on screen anymore.  The writers on this show continue to make attractive women miserable to watch.  Molly, Kristina, Joslin, Carly…….  all annoying and/ or miserable.  And are the writers pain ing on breaking up TJ and Molly so they can put her with Dex?  Puke.  o don’t think I can take it if they introduce plot contrivances that turn TJ into an even bigger asshole.

honestly, when it comes to Liz and Lucky - it would actually be really refreshing if they had a very serious conversation that regardless of how much they love each other - they aren't good for one another and they work better as friends [and they share a kid], and they'll always be part of each other's lives but they don't have to be in a relationship because they both hurt each other constantly. it's not just about what Lucky has done to Liz but Liz has hurt Lucky as well (which Liz had stated several times throughout the years).

It really seems like they have been. I did see someone offer up an alternative theory (not remotely a spoiler, just a wild guess) that it's not them setting them up for anything romantic, but it's setting up a reveal that Ric is Dex's dad, somehow. Whatever it is, they've been throwing them in too many scenes together for them to not have something in mind for the characters.

Honestly I'm just over the endless baby angst. T.J. and Molly have had some good drama recently but they've been on the show usually doing nothing but marking time for decades collectively, and neither actor exactly bowls me over. I just would write them out together and revisit Molly a few years down the road. This show needs a large cast cull.

Brennan (again, international terrorist? double agent? I still don't know!) is clearly just a placeholder so Korte and co. can say Carly has a man, since bringing on Steve hasn't really worked there and it's clear neither party wants to go back to S&C Round 50. Waste of time to me and this show is often on borrowed time as is. Bring on a man of stature or A.J.

Culture Check: How can we discuss a character's or actor's appearance without objectifying them? How can we express likes or dislikes and still respect an individual's humanity or be mindful that a character represents a person someone else might relate to or identify with?
