Episode Discussion II: The TFGH

Culture Check: How can we discuss a character's or actor's appearance without objectifying them? How can we express likes or dislikes and still respect an individual's humanity or be mindful that a character represents a person someone else might relate to or identify with?

Carly: "Because you're kind and  you're sweet and you're amazing."

When she said this, I swear I rolled my eyes all the way around my head. These two are HORRIBLE. Between their treatment of Nina (yes, she’s made some not-so-great calls but COME ON! Carly with her history tossing these rocks in glass houses is not a good look!) and Joss’ treatment of Cam — annoying af, honestly!

So Joss felt helpless and desperate when Ava, the mother of her sorta sister, was hooked, and likewise when the guy she's hot for was shot, but the perfect stranger bloodied and beaten by said guy and abandoned by everyone at the bottom of a staircase? Nothin'.

'Mkay, then.

If not for the fact that it was Carly and Joss, I might have liked such an open mother/daughter conversation.  But it's Carly.  It was all I could do not to FF.

I will give the Willow actress some credit, she goes all in on her performance.  But being Michael's love interest never ends well and I'm okay with that. It's just taking way too long.

So... Joss comes across a woman gutted by a fish hook by a serial killer and does not know the appropriate first aid, and for this she simply must alter the course of her life and become a doctor?! I guess she will become an emergency room specialist then, and not a proctologist?

Well in all fairness, a lot of PC residents could benefit from a good Proctologist.

Not to be a Willow defender, but Sasha is the woman who ran over and killed Harmony, the woman Willow thought was her mother/the woman who raised her.  Willow has not blamed Sasha and/or has forgiven Sasha, but it was both insensitive and presumptuous of Nina to assume that Willow, a pregnant woman with a child and a job, owes Sasha, of all people, her time helping her with a job Nina volunteered Sasha for.

I still say, once it is known that Nina is Willow's mother, Wiley, her sister's son, would be a possible marrow donor.  Willow would refuse to use  Wiley in that way, anyway.

Eh. Except as a recast for Fallon Carrington (and she was a horrible choice) on Dynasty and then The Colbys, Emma didn't really hit it in prime time like Genie did. She appeared on Murder, She Wrote and as the mother in My Two Dads. But I'm blanking on anything else she did after leaving this show.

The bad Melrose Place spinoff Models, Inc., with Linda Gray as the head of a modeling agency. In a last-ditch attempt to save the show, the producers brought Samms on as a new villainness who bought half the agency, hoping she could be to it what Heather Locklear had been to the parent series. It didn't help.

What were those Sonny and Valentin scenes about? Not only was it such a random duo but I couldn’t tell at all who they were talking about. It’s clearly not Victor

That whole thing was weird. Valentin is the CEO of ELQ, what is he doing being consultant for some other company. At least that's what I got in that conversation that he's also working for these guys.

ELQ is only one pie that Valentin has fingers in, though. He's always had a lot of vague stuff going on in the background. He was mixed up with Cassandra Pierce, after all.

This sounds like all-new story. A shady "security" company to which Valentin is connected wants to move its "classified" items through Port Charles, they want to use Sonny's storage facilities, and they'll pay him millions per shipment. These items absolutely have to move through Port Charles on the way to wherever they're going, because Port Charles is the prime shipping hub of the whole region, as is brought up constantly in stories like this one. Sonny turned it down, and Valentin warned him that now that he knows all about the deal without being involved in it himself, Sonny will be considered a liability.

I'm assuming Mrs. Wu will get involved in this, because she's the only other underworld figure on the canvas currently.

Another storyline that went absolutely nowhere IIRC. The show needs to wrap up some of their storylines before they get a new one started.

I don't think they're trying to make the audience feel like Nina is a monster, so much as to make the relationship as bad as it could possibly be to set up the big reveal. Very much in the Alexis/Sam, Bobbie/Carly playbook.

(Obviously Carly already knew who her bio mom was in her circumstance, but the "enemies to beloved mother/daughter" through-line is similar in all three cases.)

LOL that Joss has to fill out an elaborate form to change her major. Most colleges and universities don't make you declare until you're a junior. (Yes, I know there are exceptions.)

yeah, my Alma Mater, we had to declare at the end of our first year. but changing majors isn't that big of a hassle, you can simply change it. you might have to be in school longer because you missed the prerequisites but it's not drama.

i've just been so busy from the last few months i have watched zero minutes of the show

Hey, guess what else is dishonest, Drew? Insider trading. He acts like that's not what he and Carly did, so he's either really disingenuous or really, really stupid. I'm betting on the latter. And the writers are acting like Michael wasn't in on the whole thing, participating in those conversations, so I guess they're counting on us having bad memories or being really, really stupid. I'm betting on the latter.

I was premed before changing my mind and from what I remember, the sequence would take a minimum of 5 semesters due to certain classes that have to be taken before others.

There are med schools now in Canada that don't go by the traditional premed courses. They take students from a variety of backgrounds based on life experience interviews etc. Probably still MCAT is important. But like you said it is all MOOT as Joss will be in the world renown PCU med school by next summer.

I didn't like the "redo" scenes of Nina and Willow today. I liked it better when Willow was yelling shut up, I would have done the same.

I gave Joss 1 chance but she blew it. She went back to see Dex without talking to Cam first so she is "the person at fault" #freeCam

WOW good call back writers, bringing up Sam's babies still birth. I am surprised they remember.

Yes Nina , you do a lot of dumb things!

Joss saying she's not in love with anyone was special. Great that she acknowledges that in the first place, but the person she should've run to talk to was Cam, not Dex. And Carly, she's already the bad guy. She has repeatedly lied to Cam and kissed another guy, which might happen again before she gets around to her checklist and breaks up with. I don't know that Joss was ever in love with Cam in the first place. He was her best friend.

I don’t think she ever was. She only decided she wanted him after she found out about his kiss with Trina. And honestly a young girl dating her friend and realizing she doesn’t have passionate feelings for him isn’t uncommon and could be a good story. But they’re leaving Cam completely out of the story, because of course. It’s GH.

The best part of today was Spencer just gleefully watching Victor and Cyrus trying to out petty one another for his love and his soul. Then that glee went full on pissed when he found out about what those two did to Laura, Trina, and Britt. The only worthwhile thing to turn into today.

I can almost see them going to the Baby Daddy route with Joss. She doesnt free Cam from her succubus like hold on him, she has sex with Jason 2.0, and boom shes pregnant.

Two days in a row of gaslighting me is two days too many.

Drew needs a private place to explain to Michael that he and Carly must stay apart. Where does he pick?  Carly's home.

Michael hasn't noticed that Drew and Carly are closer, even before he knew about Willow's leukemia, and that Drew was the one person who went to help Carly in Jacksonville. Way to go, genius.  Also, you're  the CEO of Aurora, the insider trading is going to bite you too.

Thanksgiving pizza was not a peace offering, Drewfus. It was a holiday dinner for everyone.

I hate how they are playing this as Ned being in the wrong when it's Drew, Michael and Carly who are. Ned is the only person in the right.

A good portable fetal monitor costs about a thousand dollars to over course Willow has one. Except it's only going to tell how the fetus is doing, not how Willow is.  Better to take Willow's blood pressure since she fainted.

Now that Carly has told Nina to stay away from Willow and Nina will, is that going to come back to bite Carly? On this show, no way.

"I found you bleeding. I nursed you through a fever. I sat up with you all night to make sure you were still breathing."  Joss, Dex is back in Sonny's fold despite your best efforts to keep him to yourself. He doesn't need your beginning medical efforts. Go talk to Cameron before you cheat on him some more.

How old is Wylie that he is in school?  Did he get SORASed while I wasn't looking?

Sasha: "Helping others is a great way to help yourself."  Hey, that's what I said yesterday about why Willow should help Sasha.

"The memory of the just is blessed but the memory of the wicked shall rot." I like how Spencer is playing off Cyrus vs Victor. Nice acting on the Spencer actor's part.

And I love how Cyrus is taunting Victor. Finally, someone who is Victor's match.

Oh, and Dante is conflicted about Sonny. But that's going to go nowhere except as it relates to Michael.

The cliff-hanger is Sonny at Dex's door. Will he catch Joss there?  I couldn't care less.

PCU med school -- rivalling Johns Hopkins.

There are med schools now that don't go by premed courses but they're a lot harder to get into that those who want premed because so many people are applying to them. And because they justify it by letting people in who have had a diverse life, Joss would have to come up with something a lot better than just playing volleyball to get in.  I know someone who was accepted at McMaster. She had been a teacher, went back to school for an MA in clinical psychology, and then applied to med school. There's no way Joss is going to be able to compete against that.

So today's episode. By far the best thing about it was the trio of Spencer and great uncles.

finding nemo seagulls GIF

We were one step away from them peeing on Spencer to mark their territory. I very much enjoyed the acting, though. I had totally forgotten about Cyrus's attempted murder on Britt.

Speaking of Britt, Carly's lie about Willow's maternity is a lot bigger when we start breaking it down. Willow has more family than Nina. Britt is also her blood relative and someone who knows about her leukemia. She's stripped her of that emotional support. However Britt is written out, Carly took the opportunity from them to get to know each other as family.

I couldn't even follow the BS between Michael and Drew. Two boring characters droning on. Staring at my wall is more enjoyable than this drivel.

Dear Joss, since you went to Dex's with the intent of chatting about feelings than kissing him, you should have swung by Kelly's and broken up with your sweet, trusting boyfriend instead of hightailing it to your crush to emotionally cheat and kiss him. How far would this thing have gone if Sonny hadn't knocked on the door? And you are 100% the bad guy.

I went back to rewatch the Spencer scenes because most times I can't sit and watch intently (is there anyone who can sit through a scene of Michael and Drew with total attention???) Anyways it was totally worth it, the acting was great. Victor and Cyrus each trying to play Spencer and he has out played them both.

Wow, I know bullet wounds in Port Charles are commonplace, but kudos to GH for being so progressive to have "how to treat a bullet wound" on their website, so all those pesky criminals don't have to go to the hospital. And, congrats, Joss, you are now officially a cheater.

I can't with this "maybe I am as bad a person as Willow says" and "I'd do anything to not have harm come to Willow and her baby" mantra Nina has.  This storyline is definitely going to be Nina having to practically beg to save them and those two assholes being pissed about her ~agenda.

Dante just now getting a conscience about the conundrum he's in by being a cop and having a criminal daddy.  Only took like 15 years.

Same. Cyrus doesn't fool around when something needs to get done, and he's not afraid to get his hands dirty. Victor right now is all talk and little action. Yes, he kidnapped Ethan (I DON'T CARE), but Holly still got the better of Victor. And all he's done is yammer on about his big plan, with nothing to show for it and we're no closer to finding out what that is. I'm thisclose to not caring about that. Victor desperately needs to get his Cassadine on.

I just saw someone claim Michael/Willow are a supercouple and it's the best laugh I've had all week.

Wasn't stem cells from cord blood a big thing twenty years ago? Maybe they'll have Willow last long enough to have the baby and then for the baby's cord blood to save her. This way the show can drag on this storyline for at least another three years.

In that case they may be using the cord blood for stem cells. They may be able to get stem cells from Wiley's  blood but I don't think a bone marrow sample. No sure what Willow needs.

Helena should come back from the death to teach her family a lesson. She should start with Nikolas, the least effective Cassadine, and shove him off the parapet where he can go bye bye for another 3 years. I don't even hate the character, but it doesn't get more ineffective than this.

Victor is about to be on par with his dear nephew. And Mr. Scariest Cassadine himself, Valentin, is as scary as a puppy.

Ironically, I think Nina's irrational lashing out at "Miss Tate" back then was the writers' first attempt to make them antagonists as a ramp-up to a mother-daughter reveal. This would have been before they decided to go another way and have her daughter be Nelle.

The biggest problem with this show is the writing. I don't think there was a single person on the board who was team Nina back then. Nina as played by Stafford was always overly aggressive with Willow. She refused to see sweet Charlotte for the brat and bully that she was and constantly undermined Lulu's parenting of her daughter. That whole arc with the perfect Charlotte was a shit show. I fucking hated Charlotte. And I still do to some extent because of that whole phase of her being championed by Nina at the expense of Aiden.

Nina is also the reason Shiloh ended up finding out that Willow got pregnant by him and had a son. And I think that she may have lost her teaching job over this whole arc with Shiloh and her arrest. I could be wrong, so I know someone will correct me on this.

Every time the writers decided to ramp up Nina as Willow's mother, the two entered into conflict. Then there would be a lull. Then it's conflicts again. And now we're right in the heart of it since the writers have finally decided that this thing is happening. It only took 4-5 years, but here we are finally.

I can't take the writing seriously because I find this whole thing hideous.

I can't even talk about Millow. They make me want to scratch someone's eyes out. Especially Michael. The sun apparently shines out of his ass and this whole dynamic with his character is just messed up.

I used to complain about Guza a lot and the mob stories that ate the show, but I would probably take that over the drivel that is this Nina/Willow arc. That's not even mentioning the other storyline with Portia/Trina/Curtis that's waiting in the wings.
