Episode Discussion II: The TFGH

Culture Check: How can we discuss a character's or actor's appearance without objectifying them? How can we express likes or dislikes and still respect an individual's humanity or be mindful that a character represents a person someone else might relate to or identify with?

I forget.  Was it Jason's former bike shop or Drew when he used to be Jason's bike shop?

Both, actually. Way back when Jason was dating Robin and thinking of baby Michael as his own son, it was his shop. Then a few years ago, it was "Jake's" shop before he was identified as Jason and then Drew.

Kathleen Gati's hair has been looking amazing lately.

Where exactly were Britt and Julian? There was a real bed in the room but also a wall of clipboards and work stuff.

Sonny is such a condescending tool. How dare Brando turn down such a "generous" offer to force him to stay in Port Charles.

Yeah, that's the OG bike shop. It's been around for whenever the plot demands it.

Hell of a time to be hearing Joss reluctantly accept homeschooling as her only option for now, pointing out the unfortunate lack of human contact. Trust us kid, we feel you. As for Carly, she is, as usual, so full of shit her eyes should turn brown. She shouldn't have to wait for Joss to "check in" when things get to be too much. Carly's whole job as a parent is to protect Joss from danger in the first place, not groom her to become accustomed to it.

Hopefully the one-two punch of Ava and Liz telling Nikolas his "I'm sorry" tour won't undo the damage he's caused will finally sink in with him. I'm pretty bored with his attitude and his moping and need something to change, otherwise what is the point of him being back?

I will never not be mad at the hypocrisy of Sonny slinking around town intimidating Julian or Brad for depriving him of a member of his family. You get what you give, dude, and there's no high ground for you here.

My problem is that she's whining and fuming toward/about being in this situation and Anna specifically, and then has the balls (while talking to Britt) to blame Anna for "aiding Peter" after she herself truly enabled and protected Faison in holding Anna's daughter Robin hostage and torturing her! She was never actually sorry for what she did to Robin; saying "well she came back but Nathan never will" is not an apology. The only reason she hates the late Faison now is because he killed her son.  If Lies had been complaining about the cops in general doing her wrong instead of Anna specifically, I wouldn't care. Just like if Anna wanted to take down Leisl right now purely because she had undeniable additional evidence from when Leisl helped Faison keep Robin prisoner, I would be happy. But Anna wanting to take down Leisl for framing poor, poor Peter is stupid, insulting and pathetic.

Today Leisl's behavior made me wonder if she's taking lessons from Sonny and Carly in hypocrisy. Anna is unknowingly aiding and protecting Peter out of naivety and highly misplaced guilt, but Leisl gladly did much worse for decades knowing full well exactly what she was doing.

I HATE when shows make characters poor for storylines. Since when was Franco broke?!?! In all the time that Friz has been together and married, there has never been a hint that they are struggling financially. Does Liz have no insurance? Do they have no savings? Didn't Franco earn enough money from his art to pay back his victims AND pay for Kiki's medical school?!?! Why is he suddenly poor?!?!

The only good thing about this storyline is Franco painting again and the Franco/Ava interactions. I want to see him painting and getting back to his art. I want his art to sell, and I want more Frava scenes! They have good chemistry and are good friends. I like the way Ava supported him and helped build up his confidence!

But I still call BS on Franco being dirt poor. I guess he had no money at all. How did he live or afford his art studio?!? Whatever, Show!! They really to stop dipping from the "Liz is so poor" storyline bin!!

For people to have more reasons to talk about Lucky, heh. I think his name has been said more the last two months than all of last year.

Plus he did decide to tell Liz the situation with Hayden instead of following Ava's advice so he's smartening up a little.

I think most school districts these days have virtual schools for students who can't attend brick-and-mortar school for whatever reason, so teachers don't actually have to go to the homes to see their students. Additionally (writers) "homeschooling" would probably be something a contracted teacher would not be doing since homeschooling is done by people who don't want their children attending their district schools. Additionally, (and I know this is all being done to set up a Joss is hot for the teacher plot) what mother would promise her daughter that she hire a young stud teacher for her? Especially when said mother will probably always be at work when said teacher is at her home? (Since said teacher has already shown up numerous times at both the Metro Court and Kelly's when most schools are already in session, he apparently has much more fluid hours than the rest of the teaching community.)

I know, I know, I'm trying to apply logic and that's always a mistake. But whatshisname's popping into every restaurant in town during school hours has been driving me crazy for a while.

I had to LOL at Jason's "you don't seem invested in Dev" comment to Brando. Why would he be? He doesn't know any of these people.

Franco had a lot of nerve to ask Scott for $100,000, and expect him to put up his apartment for collateral. How about you try a little harder to scrape some cash together, dude?

The person whose whining I'm tired of is Nik's. He brought all of this on himself by faking his death.

Carly saying she was constantly taking the temperature of when her kids are in danger was laughable. Not even a kid getting shot in the head or dying in a car bomb will make her leave Sonny, so she can stop with that "my children come before everything" crap.

Well, they did set it up a bit in advance.  Franco's money was frozen.  Plus he wasn't working while he was Drew so not earning money.  Plus he said he had medical bills from the memory transplant and reversal.

And that's why I hate their relationship - it's all about Franco and what Scotty can do for Franco and Franco stomps all over him.  Yuck.

In brighter news, I liked Kelly Thiebaud's acting when Britt was visiting Liesl; Britt was subtly but clearly uncomforable being back in a prison, even on the other side of the bars.  I also thought she looked very nice in that blue sweater she was wearing.  I did not like Britt calling Dr. O Mom all of a sudden.  What happened to Mother?

Maybe he's into gambling? But honestly it has to be drugs and the show is stupid to not just accept that. Just fucking own it.

He's never mentioned gambling, and given how his life was trashed by his dad's gambling habit, I don't think he'd be keen on spreading more of that kind of pain. Isn't that his rationale for not dealing drugs? The impact on families?

The contents of Sonny's "shipments" are like the mysterious briefcase in Pulp Fiction. People have been theorizing for decades and we're still no closer to knowing, and we probably never will.

If the show is ever canceled, they should tie it up in the final episode and have it be something outlandish. Have the last scene show various endangered species being freed from crates. All along he's been trafficking in exotic animals. Many of them lived on The Island. While in transport, they were eating moss.

Franco has been broke for years, this is nothing new.  He has struggled for money at several points since all of his funds were at first frozen and then went to restitution to the families of his victims, which was totally fair.  The money from his art went to Kiki's tuition and then to the hospital to get the art department back up and running so he could go back to work there instead of being a parking lot attendant.

And I don't care how good your insurance is, they ain't paying for those "procedures" he got to get his memory back.

ETA:  I wonder what the billing code was for that.  I also want to see the accounting department's faces when they had to figure that out and then submit it to try and get the insurance to cover any of his hospital stay.

I know Franco's assets were frozen, but they were unfrozen at some point and he earned a lot of money off his art. I never got the impression he was dead broke after he sold his art, paid for Kiki's medical school, and paid for art therapy to continue at GH. I got the impression he was living quite comfortably. I have never considered him to be poor. And since he's had no money issues at all from the time he sold his art until yesterday, I don't think we were meant to think he was poor!

Who charged Franco for that procedure? Is Andre even a GH employee? Wasn't this a situation where a "guest" doctor was being allowed to use the hospital for an experimental procedure? It involved a laptop?!?!?!! How much could it have possibly cost!?! He was in the hospital for a day at most and maybe even a few hours! And why wouldn't his insurance cover a hospital stay? The procedure shouldn't cost anything! It wasn't a legal procedure!!

Why wasn't Franco complaining about hospital bills when he was stabbed? He made no mention of those bills at all. He just recovered and went on w/his life! He even threw a lavish reception for his wedding. IIRC, it was on the HS and was a catered event. That's not cheap.  It's not like they had a reception in Liz's living room w/some hot dogs and Cheez-Its!

Look - all I'm saying is I want some consistency. Friz have not complained about money until yesterday. When Franco was Drew, that was the time for Liz to mention how she was struggling w/o Franco's contributions to the bills, or how she was still paying off his last medical bills or something. I don't know. Just set up the story. Don't go from Franco having money (which he did . .  I don't care what anyone says . . . lol) to suddenly he's broke and can't afford to get the pipes fixed.

That's just soaps (and TV generally), though. Some characters live in houses/apartments that look too extravagant for whatever their jobs are, or they're dressed too expensively or appear to live lavishly, and then money woes come up to serve a story point. To some viewers, it's still a sore spot that Liz and Lucky became Last Exit to Branford poor in the mid-aughts just to make Liz receptive to carrying a baby for Jax and his then-wife, the deceased daughter of Mike and Janine.

I don't think your insurance will pay for a hospital stay if you have an illegal or non-approved experimental procedure.  Now, if you have a heart attack, or something, due to that procedure, your insurance should cover the care for that.  Plus, I don't know about them, but I have a $7,000 deductible on my insurance.

I know, but it's just annoying and it kills any sense of continuity for me.

Plus, Liz is the ONLY PC character w/money issues. She and Lucky had them as you mentioned. She had them when she was single. She has them now that she's w/Franco. It's annoying. I was so happy when she got w/Franco b/c I thought we were done w/the random "Liz can't afford anything" stories.

I agree! Franco shouldn't have to pay for anything when it comes to that surgery. The first one was done on him illegally, and he has to foot the bill to get that nonsense reverse! That's messed up if you ask me!

10 minutes ago, Katy M said:

Okay . . . I get that, but does GH have to charge him for the use of the bed or the procedure? This situation was just so extraordinary that it bothers me that Franco is being asked to pay for any it! He was victimized in some sci-fi way and shouldn't have to foot the bill afterwards!  We went from some science-fiction craziness to the reality of the hospital bill?!? It just feels off that this is even an issue.

Yay for Cameron and Trina. Otherwise today's episode was bad:

Portia complaining about Ava with mob moll Carly who is next to lying about Ava was completely nauseating. Portia still comes off as a bitch so I guess their friendship makes sense.

Supervised visits are supposed to be with someone authorized to supervise who sits apart from them so they can build a relationship, not dad's girlfriends and random friend who drops in. They're giving Nelle material for court.

Joss making Trina's problems about her problems. Trina really is too good for Joss and her mothers. Thank goodness Laura interrupted Cam about to profess his love to Joss.

Stop looking at the picture of TJ Jordan. We know you're worried. (Man, do I miss Vinessa Antoine in the role.)  At least she called Sam on her her idiocy.

LOL at Sam telling Alexis to check in on her daughter. Take your own advice, Sam.

I genuinely smiled/laughed at Wiley's "whatever, lady" expression while Sasha was yammering to him about Michael, and then Nelle's WTF expression when Chase sat down and asked for snacks.

It's nice when the Show gets its right, i.e. Laura interacting with Cam and then Elizabeth, and it's not about Franco. Loved the hugs! I really liked Trina going off on Joss, and the Cam-Trina  conversation about their trauma was very well done. However, that kiss was really awkward-looking.

So much UGH: The Dr. Robinson and Carly conversation about Ava. Also, Jordan getting her gun out and thinking she's going to rescue her son by herself.

WTF is up with Carly painting Ava as some sort of predator moving in on Trina? That's a rhetorical question; I know Carly will go to her grave shamelessly maligning her enemies. But calling Ava's relationship with Morgan (who was an ADULT and free to make his own choices) "inappropriate" and equating that relationship to Ava and Trina is all kinds of messed up. The lecherous implication of that whole conversation was needlessly slanderous and a total distortion of reality. Portia sucks for eating it up and not even attempting to give Ava a fair shot.

Cam and Trina, woo hoo! I liked the awkward kiss; they're teenagers with middling experience, in the middle of an emotional upheaval, so awkward fits the bill. They'll have plenty of time to refine things, I'm sure.

Carly never treated her sons like they were adults, and judging from her actions during the Wiley reveal, still doesn't actually think of Michael as an adult. Morgan was around 20/21? when he  got involved with Ava, but to this day she still thinks of him as a boy and of Ava as an older woman who took advantage of him because's she's needy and selfish. It was the same way when Carly forced her way into Brenda's room and found a hung over Michael in her bed. I think he was in his early to mid 20s at that point? Carly freaked out and was almost crying like she had discovered her minor/teenage son had been raped/seduced by a woman she hates.  Scott had to talk enraged Carly out of asking Sonny to have Brenda killed. (And the fact that Brenda told Michael nothing happened, he passed out, was actually none of Carly's business.)

As for the Cam-Trina kiss, their actions screamed to me "ok, it's in the script that we kiss .. get closer, closer, now press our lips together." It seemed especially awkward/unromantic on Trina's side - not them feeling a combination of emotional closeness and strong physical attraction in the moment. I was expecting a kiss after some more moments of one-on-one closeness, after Cam grows a bit more distant with his long-time crush Joss and starts looking at Trina in a not-just-friends kind of way. I just remember that Elizabeth and Lucky's first kiss happened after some months of it being glaringly obvious how much they cared about each other, and were attracted to each other.

Wouldn't homeowner's insurance cover her losses for the frozen pipes?  I find it hard to believe Liz, Franco and kids wouldn't hightail it to the Metro Court, rather than freezing in the dark at home.  People on this show stay at MC for weeks, months, years and never worry about a hotel bill.

That was a short shift yesterday for Liz.  One minute she's taking her coat off at the Nurses' Station, then then next scene she is at the MC, berating Nik.  And doesn't everyone in town run to the Bank of Nicholas, when they have money troubles?  She should have toned down the rant over Hayden.

That was weird.  Chase wasn't there in the capacity of the supervisor.  Michael told Sasha that Nelle was getting supervised visits but then Nelle shows up alone.   Then Michael calls Chase over, not as the supervisor, but as his buddy to keep an eye on Nelle with him (because apparently his eyes and Sashas eyes are not enough to watch Nelle).  Where was the supervisor? Like say, Delores.

As a Chillow fan, I'm seriously pissed that they throwing Willow into the 'marry Michael to look better than Nelle' story.

Yikes, I felt bad for the two because that thing was just all kinds of no.  It was so bad that I wondered if it was bad on purpose, that they dont' have those kinds of feelings for each other but they kissed because they figured they should.  It's unfortunate because Cam/Trina is a million tiimes better than Cam/Joss.

Portia was coming across, again as being jealous of Ava spending so much time with Trina, interested in the same things as Trina, nurturing that side of Trina.  Carly was just feeding into that as the biatch she is.
