In the Hoffman vs. Grey fight, I am pretty much on Grey's side, even if Hoffman is the one investigating a murder and Grey is clearly hiding stuff. Probably because Hoffman using Dex to get to Grey and trying to be sneaky investigating him really rubs me the wrong way. Maybe if we get to know him better I will be more up to rooting for him, but right now it does kind of seem like he is looking hard at Grey just because Grey was in prison, even if, as far as he knew, the connection with the dead guy was tangential at most, and Grey really seems to be trying to leave crime behind and start over.

Except of course that Grey was the last known person to have contact with the dead guy and Grey lied about it.  So, not so tangential.  People would complain up a storm if he didn't check out someone who was the last to have contact and lied about it.

Which is just one of the many reasons why I hate it. I hate when shows use a toss away gimmick that has a time a finite time limit to it. I find this particularly annoying because while we only hear the songs when it’s important to the plot, she has to turn it on, she is should never be surprised by what song comes on because she is in her car a lot more than when we see her.

I don't think the tape deck plays every time she turns on the car.  It seems to come on randomly.  Like in the pilot, those guys were driving for a while before Sweet Caroline came on.  Sometimes it's when she starts the car, but sometimes it seems to react to a bump or something else.  I don't think Dex has any control over when it comes on or off.

We have literally seen her turn it on more than once so she does have that capability even if it can also come on at other times  but my point was that there are only so many songs that can be on a mixed tape so she has to have heard them all a gazillion times so she should never be surprised by any of the songs.

Back in the days I remember seeing cassette tapes that have either 30, 45, and 60 minutes on each side. So if the tape in the player has 60 minutes on each side, then it's 2 hours worth of songs, assuming the player is the kind, that does not require manually ejecting the tape to change the sides.

Not on each side.  That was the total on the tape.

There were C180 cassettes as well but they weren't as easy to find.

I thought the car deck was an eight-track.

I  love and ADORE Donal Logue and I wish he were likely to play a bigger role on this show since I really enjoy it.

Dex definitely said it was a cassette in the first episode. Later in the same episode after Grey tells Hoffman that Dex may have been kidnapped, Hoffman tells the police to be on the lookout for her '92 Mustang. By 1992, cars were being made with cassette players (not eight tracks).

In the first episode, most (if not all) of the times that the tape deck started playing was after the car hit a bump (like when they drove over the train tracks). Dex also told Nina to leave it alone and it might stop playing on its own, so she may be able to turn it on and off (I don't specifically remember seeing her do that but I'll take your word for it) but it seems that it also starts and stops playing on its own.

There are 120 minute cassette tapes still available.  That's 2 hours total playing time, which could be 30-35 songs, depending on how they were recorded.

With 8 track tapes, you could see the end of the tape with the artist label poking out of the player.  Dex definitely has a cassette.

It’s played more than one song in an episode in at least  two episodes (90 minutes were more common than 120 minutes) and the song selection has so far gone into longer songs) it adds nothing other than being a “quirk” and for me it’s an active distraction and I don’t see how it adds anything to the show.
it might have been said but I don’t think it has that the mixed tape is something her dead fiancé made for her because she could have seriously unscrewed the system on her own.

I thought it was established in this episode that the cassette came with the purchase of the car.  Didn't it start playing a song after Dex bought drove off the lot?

Unfortunately, my high hopes for this "Whiskey Cavalier" replacement were dashed slightly when they brought on Donal Logue.  I hate the roles he plays.  He always plays a nasty, devious, unwashed character.  I hated him in "Blade", and I was TOTALLY turned off when he played the sex partner of Sarah Shahi on the TV series, "Life".  Talk about Beauty and the Beast.  Ugh.

Whiskey Cavalier AND Life are both shows that were gone too soon for me (add The Grinder on Fox and The Kids are All Right).

It started playing even before that, while Grey was sitting in it and fiddling around with the controls.  I think Dex took the song as the final sign that the car was meant for her.

I will forever lament the cancellations of Whiskey Cavalier and The Grinder!

I’m glad the doublecross caught me by surprise but still made sense, especially when Donal Logue’s character reminded us/Dex of hints he had dropped.

The best writers will do that - provide the hints but keep you from noticing them. I loved it.

Bad Alibi really is a terrible name for a bar. Also, the decor doesn't look like I'd expect a bar with that name to look. It's not a dive!

I think it's a great name, properly cheesy and punny. We have an Alibi, and an Office in our town. I don't go to bars, but I do find the names amusing.

No Donal Logue! Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!

I'm not sure why we would assume he told the truth about how expensive the vase was if he lied about everything else.

I wasn't sure if the vase really was expensive, but the barely controlled cringe on Artie's face told me it was.

Are we sure Donal Logue isn't going to at least be a continuing guest star?

Since they gave him a mysterious backstory (no one knowing why he quit the force), and he's now got an alliance with the casino lady, I'm guessing we'll see him again.

I don't expect any rules of reality to apply to that tape. So I don't bother my mind with the details and just sit back and enjoy the soundtrack.

With this show at least. I do get bothered on other shows.

Many rarely used nicknames.  Rose City is more common.  I've lived 3 hours away and had an uncle who lived there for 85 years and friends down there and have never heard of Stumptown as a nickname.  I've a feeling that whoever named the original story used Google, not locals, to come up with the name.

Greg Rucka, creator of the Stumptown comic book, and his wife lived in Eugene, OR before moving to Portland where they currently reside. No Google required since he is a local.

As for the rarity of the name being used, there are literally dozens of businesses and entities with "Stumptown" in their name. A smattering:

Stumptown Coffee Roasters

Stumptown Booth (they rent photo booths)

Stumptown Disc Golf Club

Stumptown Printers Worker Cooperative (a print shop)

The Stumptown Cluster (an annual dog show)

The Stumptown Gamecrafters' Guild

Don't get me started on lunch counters, strip clubs and beer names... 🙂

There’s a decently sized Portland Timbers (Ansel is seen wearing a Timbers shirt a few times) And Thorns fan site that’s called, of course, Stumptown Football.

(Speaking of, I really hope the show starts building more on everyone in the cast being being Timbers fans, particularly Ansel).

Given they dated when they were younger and than got together again right before he died I will still not be surprised if that tape was made by him that some way found her again, as it is it’s so forced so wouldn’t surprise me.

1500 hours is about 10 months full time, so they could stretch that into the first season, possibly to the 2nd.  The she's on her own after she's licensed.  More hilarity ensues.

Can't wait for season 4 when some green PI comes around trying to apprentice under Dex!

I agree they definitely need to spend some time on Michael Ealy's character soon.  They are relying on the stoic "good" guy stereotype a lot, and to me with mixed results.  The interrogation scene between Grey and Hoffman would have had a lot more weight if we'd really connected to both characters.  I agree that Camryn Manheim also needs more to do.

I enjoyed the twists and turns with Artie.  I thought he was laying it on a little thick in places trying to bond with Dex, and then dismissed it as a rushed character introduction.  I liked the idea of him as a mentor but almost equally like the idea of him as a nemesis.

I did think the final "I Got the Power" bit was a little over the top, even for this show.  But I would like to see Dex hit back.  (Aside: that digital footage of the creep in the elevator must exist in more than one place.  Surely the new love interest kept a copy for herself.  I can buy Artie trying to sell his copy as the only one, but the guy would be a sucker to believe it.)

Does Jake Johnson look like Oscar Isaac to anyone else?

I think it was a dead partner.

I, too, think there must be another copy of that video. After all, forwarding it to someone else does not erase your copy of it. I'd like to see it leaked to the internet and press! (And Artie would probably get the blame!) He'll surely be back as Dex resolves this issue.

Why does dex pretend to not know who feeney is in hoffman’s House...when she bit him and put him in her trunk in the first episode? How does Hoffman NOT know this? He was there! Is this just an oversight? Seems like a pretty big one because they made sure to show us the bite mark on feeney’s hand when he was found dead. Seriously I’d like a legit answer to this seemingly ignorant oversight by the writers. My thought is that since it was the pilot episode there may have been a couple things missed while trying to carry on the continuity of the show. Anybody know for sure?

That wasn’t Feeney. He only showed up in Ep 2.
