S07.E01: Audrey Hepburn and a Jalapeño Pepper

I didn't see a topic and wanted to discuss so I created one.

I wasn't thrilled with this season opener. Bonnie was working my last nerve and I'm not sure how I feel about her being a sponsor.

I did enjoy the girls coming to the bar to help Christy out. She was clearly in over her head and is not a good manager. I also loved Tammy constantly harping on Christy about nepotism, heh. Tammy really should have been the one in charge.

I'm trying to remember - when was Audrey Hepburn mentioned?

Is Kate Micucci joining the cast? I won't be remotely surprised if she ends up moving in with one of the characters. I like her, but I'm not sure if there's room in this cast for someone new. We see so little of Marjorie and especially Wendy as it is.

Christy continues to be an idiot, and I can't fathom that she has the common sense to be successful as an attorney. She renumbered the tables, and didn't think that would cause massive confusion?

Also, regarding the bar - I continue to be surprised that they've never explored whether spending all this time at a bar has any effect on the characters' struggle to maintain sobriety. Especially in an episode like this, in which they're pouring drink after drink after drink.

When Bonnie was bitching about Adam's glasses. She made a comment about being married to Audrey Hepburn and Breakfast at Tiffany's.

I agree completely that the cast is big enough already and they don't do enough with the characters they have BUT.....I love Kate Micucci. I think she's hysterical and will watch anything she's in.

Regarding the bar, I'll preface by saying I know everyone's different, I used to work with someone who told me they were an alcoholic during one of our weekly bar crawls. They said that it was easy not to drink in a crowd, it was at home, alone with their thoughts that was hard.

They didn't really depict it here but I imagine it's easier to keep sobriety under the circumstances of how rowdy drunk people in a sports bar get. Kind of a turn off when you're a sober person being annoyed by it.

I'm probably the lone voice of dissent, but I don't care for Kate Micucci, and I'm hoping she's not a long-term regular.  Other than that, I enjoyed the rest of the episode.  Adam's glasses reminded me of the episode of Seinfeld when George gets talked in to buying ladies frames.

I don't care for Kate Micucci either. I really disliked her in her stints on Scrubs and Big Bang Theory. I liked her here, but under the provision that it's a one-shot deal. If she shows up in subsequent episodes and annoys the piss out of me, I'm sure my opinion will change.

She was in a show I used to enjoy that I can't recall the name of.  Eventually, the show went downhill when characters left, and she was the replacement for one of the characters.  Then she was in some weird thing called "Garfunkel and Oates", where she kept making references to her being Oates because she had a moustache.  Meh.

Was that the show with the brother from "Everyone Loves Raymond?"

I hated her on that show and didn't like her on "The Big Bang Theory" either. I always groan when I see her on my TV. I hope this was a one-off and she won't suddenly appear wanting to crash in Bonnie's house. This show has enough characters.

I was underwhelmed with this episode.  It seems like they are headed for Bonnie being "saved" by helping someone else and since last season, Christie has kind of morphed into an asshole.

And agreed, the cast is large enough.  I have no clue who Kate Miccuci is, but if last night's show is an indication, I really don't want to see any more of her.

Yes!  That show was funny until the neighbors moved out (the younger married couple).  That ruined the dynamic of the show.  She was one of the people who played the older married couple's daughter.

I hope not. She doesn't live in the same town so I'm keeping my fingers crossed she isn't a regular. They need to do more with Marjorie, Jill and Wendy. They barely get any lines as it is. I'm sure they're grateful for the paycheck but imagine them getting script after script where they get one or two lines and some guest star has a really big part.

Putting Christy in charge of the bar seems like a really, really bad idea. And not just because she ran it poorly. She has a history of being unable to resist temptation. Look what happened when she went into a gambling casino.

I don't think AA is the answer to all of Bonnie's problems. Clearly that type of honeymoon/vacation just isn't suited to her. She's not the type to lay around and sit in the sun and read a book. She's just too hyperactive and probably needs ADD medication. She's treating AA meetings as her own personal therapy sessions.

Bonnie is still possessed by her own demons who come to the surface when she's alone. Adam is perfect for her because he helps her fight the demons. Despite all his physical problems, Adam isn't broken, he doesn't need Bonnie, he simply loves her. Bonnie needs to be needed...and once she found someone who needed her help, she stopped being crazy.

Christy is still a mess, she's not as far along as she thinks she is. Tammy is a fabulous, truth telling contrast for her...the banter in the meetings is priceless.

Aww, I really liked it. I've missed these ladies and Adam. It made perfect sense to me that Bonnie would lose her cool on that peaceful honeymoon. The moment Adam showed up with his smartphone in hand and the info for the next AA meeting was incredibly romantic (as weird as that sounds).

I guess Kate Micucci will be one of these semi-regular characters the show features on a regular basis. I think she has an interesting dynamic with Bonnie. I just hope this does not end in tears like the arc with the girl Christy tried to help. As for Christy: she's been a waitress for years and even if a bar is not a restaurant she should have been better at this. Tammy was great though and I'm glad she made into the opening cast pictures.

I also loved that Jill mentioned Andy (I guess he's the boyfriend she mentioned during the meeting).

I hope they aren't planning on adding anyone new to the cast.  They have to many characters as it is.

I don't know how anyone could date long term let alone marry Bonnie or Christie.  They are way to high maintenance.  Fun to watch, up to a point, but live with, no way in hell.

It's funny - a lot of the objections that people have to Kate Micucci (like her voice being annoying, and her characters being grating) are the same objections that I have to John Ratzenberger. With the additional complaint that his politics make me want to throw up.

I realize that Cliff Clavin was a beloved character for a lot of people, but he was always my least favorite part of Cheers.

I was never a huge fan of Cliff - he was just incredibly annoying to me.  I know the character was supposed to be annoying, but it wasn't funny annoying.  Just annoying.  So no argument there.

I have nothing against Kate's voice.  I just find her acting to be very one-note.  She only ever plays (at least in what I've seen her in) annoying or weird characters.  And like Cliff Clavin, not funny annoying - just annoying.  YMMV.

What would you have them do with Marjorie, Jill and Wendy?

Marjorie's storyline is pretty much wrapped up, if you think about it: she defeated cancer, got re-married, cared for and buried her husband, fixed her relationship with her estranged son. Like what else is there to do? She is there to be the voice of wisdom in the group so Christy has someone to turn to.

Jill had a the weight struggles, adoption storyline, and it was mentioned that she has a boyfriend so I am sure that will come into play later on.

And Wendy was always the character who gets the least amount of attention. She didn't even have her own introduction episode, she just appeared out of the blue one day.

I think it will be funny to see Bonnie in the role of a mentor. But what I would really like to see, is an appearance from Roscoe. We did not see Christie's son in a long time, and his budding battle with addiction storyline was never wrapped up.

All the more reason to do something with Wendy.  Boyfriend?  Relapse?  New addiction, like exercise or, I don't know, extreme gardening?  Anything!

Switching topics:  Anna Faris looks thinner than ever.  Her legs look like sticks.  And her overly broad acting (especially those hand gestures) drive me nuts.  It seems like her idea of selling a joke is yelling or hand gesturing.  If I had to lose a character due to overpopulation, it'd be Christie.  I know it's pipe dream, but a girl can dream.

Switching topics again:  This is my first time viewing Kate Micucci.  Her voice is a little twee and munchkin-like.  And her eyes are very buggy.  Graves disease, maybe.

But I think the ambiguity of Wendy is the point of the character. They can't flesh her out because her reason for existence on the show is to have these surprising revelations that illustrate how much nobody else really knows her, despite all the time they spend together.

This!  The other 4 egotists blab about themselves constantly while Wendy nods her head and nods.  And when there is the occasional  (usually hilarious) revelation from Wendy, its usually countered with a group eyeroll.  I hope the writers maintain Wendy's mystery, it's a great plot device to point out the other 4's self-centeredness.

It doesn't feel like mystery to me.  It feels like afterthought and/or lack of imagination.

I'm surprised she hasn't gone to live with Roscoe and Violet on the nice farm in the country, or wherever they are now.

I had a hard and fast love affair with this show when I discovered it in syndication.  I think i'm now in like and not in love.  And I'm starting to lose interest, kind of like the show with Wendy. Hee, see what I did there? 😊

What I would like to see is each character featured in a main story each week on a rotating basis. One week you have a story that centers around Marjorie, the next week you have one centering around Jill, the next week you have one centering around Wendy, etc. The show makes a pretense of being an ensemble by adding these players to the opening title sequence, yet week after week they show up and have one or two lines each and that's it. I'm tired of them being relegated to the obligatory AA meeting and/or the diner.

What, she only gets one? That's it? If your writers can't think up any new material for your characters, you need new writers.

What they're doing by adding new characters is the downfall of most shows. Writers get lazy and tired of writing for the same characters so they introduce new characters because it's easier on them. They don't have any pesky history the writers have to take into consideration.

They certainly manage to find something to do with Bonnie week after week. Even if it's something mundane. I just don't understand why the show makes a pretense of elevating these side characters to ensemble status then doesn't use them.

What made that moment perfect was Adam's line after Bonnie throws the table off the balcony and he appears in the doorway:

"Apropos of nothing, here is the address for a meeting in town..."

I'm also in favor of keeping Wendy the way she is.  Initially, all we knew about her was she cried a lot, so I love these random and hilarious tidbits we pick up along the way - and the non-funny ones, like she has a patent on something - because I like the juxtaposition of someone who on the surface has a totally bland personality but who, if you add up all the little glimpses into her life she doles out, has had many interesting experiences.

And I also like (as a viewer watching a sitcom, not as a person evaluating how a group of people treat a friend) how it goes in one ear and out the other with the group; at first, all she did was cry, and they never noticed when she started doing more than that, and either cut her off or ignore her, assuming it's going to be more of that type of annoying, useless thing, and thus miss a lot.  (Realistically, Marjorie would see what's happening and pause the conversation to let Wendy speak, or at least follow up with her individually, but the others are acting exactly in line with their myopic natures.)

Whatever the writers initially intended with the character, she became a sitcom archetype, the character only seen through the others' eyes and only in a very specific way, and her thing is ignored boring weepy appendage with a "secret" life we get hints of.  I'm good with that.  There can be some huge revelation in the end - my preference - or remain as it is, but I'm good.

I haven't watched this yet (I usually don't see episodes in real time, just in syndication), but I am bummed to read that Marjorie is still not getting much storyline attention so far this season; she used to be well integrated, and somewhere along the way they ran out of steam with her.  It's disappointing for a show that did an episode about how society doesn't see - sometimes literally, like the guy behind the deli counter who looked right past her to ask who's next - older women, assuming they no longer have anything to contribute, to turn around and ignore this great old broad.

What do you mean "she only gets one". I listed 3 very distinct and important storylines with Marjorie in my comment. That is more than 1.  She had a lot of focus on her but there is only so much you can do. And obviously, she will not get the same focus as Bonnie who is a main character.

As for Wendy being an archetype, she is very obviously the Jerry of the show (from parks and recreation). The part of the friend group who is often dismissed & the butt of the joke. That is what she is there for, so I don't think that will change.

Here's the other thing about Wendy...she's the only one with a real career. She's a nurse. Remember she treated Christy when she had pneumonia...and dealt with everyone like a drill sergeant.

Here's an idea for a Wendy storyline...

She goes on a reality TV show and  becomes famous (goes on Survivor? and maybe wins?).  Or becomes a YouTube sensation for doing something really unexpected.

It would be great for her character, and the reactions of the other women would be fun to watch.

For a while, she even managed the Rustic Fig.

She did the same thing when she became manager at the restaurant. The staff hated her but it worked because the owner viewed that as a sign she was doing a good job. She increased productivity and sales at the restaurant so it makes sense for her to try the same thing at the bar. She should have realized her mistake and adjusted but she not really a quick learner in those situations.

They finally gave a little bit of a follow-up in the episode with Violet last season. Marjorie said that she still doesn’t have a relationship with him and she’s hoping that one day he’ll forgive her.

This is true and Jill urged her to go and try to work out their differences before she dies. That could be a storyline for her.

I was underwhelmed by this episode. It will probably get better.

I liked Kate Micucci in Big Bang, she fit in fine. But I don't want her in Mom. I want Nicole Sullivan back as a regular as LeeAnn. She is a strong actress who would fit in with the others great.

I thought having all the women in the bar working was very unrealistic. I have been around recovery, and it wouldn't be recommended. I can see Tammy working there, she is a tough broad. But Christy, as another poster pointed out, she is too easily tempted. Jill too, we have seen her relapse. I can't see Marjorie ok'ing all of them working in a bar.

Kate Micucci was a part of the TV show Raising Hope too. I go back and forth on liking her.

Reginald VelJohnson who I know best from Die Hard and Family Matters was also a part of the out of town AA meeting In addition to John Ratzenberger from Cheers.

I didn't really enjoy this episode that much. I'd like to shove a handful of Ritalin down Bonnie's throat if that would calm her down just a little bit.  As some others have mentioned I wouldn't be sad if Christie as a character got dropped from the show. I hate what they've done to the character the last few seasons especially. I liked her the most when the show first started.

I love how this show throws bit parts to recognizable veteran actors without making them very special guest star kind of roles.  Hi, John Ratzenberger and Reginald VelJohnson.

It wasn't a great standout episode, but it was a serviceable enough catch up after the season break.  Bonnie is just one of those people who needs something she can actually do to hyperfocus on and quickly becomes unbearable and scattered without that focus.  Adam is laid back enough to recognize that for what it is and had already googled the local AA group for her without taking any of it personally.  I don't mind Kate Micucci and the Patty character didn't bother me either as you could see Bonnie seeing something of herself in her to focus on.  As long as she doesn't move to Napa, it's fine if she shows up periodically.

Christy is actually becoming less likable as the series wears on.  She's such an incompetent that it subsequently becomes less and less believable that she would ever realistically make it as a big-deal lawyer.  Tammy was right that Adam should have left her in charge as it's doubtful he was looking for any wholesale changes in running things or anything more than someone to keep an eye on the place in the week he was gone.

The other women coming to the rescue was nice as was the minor reveal that Marjorie had been a one-time ace bartender.  I imagine it probably would be less of a temptation to be in a crowded sports bar where they've got the logistics of getting food and drinks out to focus on and they can keep each other somewhat accountable than quieter more solitary situations.

In the past, the writers have given us episodes with a decent amount of Wendy in them (like when Christy was her patient, or when Christy moved in with her.)

I don't expect Wendy to get any huge plotlines, but I also don't see her as a character like Creed from The Office, who's only good for an occasional line. They could use her more than they're currently using her.

I really liked it too. The honeymoon AA meeting was great. I liked seeing some of the "regulars" played by known tv actors. I like Kate Micucci and assume she will pop up a few more times this season. I honestly wouldn't mind seeing the others too, but as has been said, this cast is pretty full already and I wouldn't want to shortchange the main cast.
