  1. I think she stole it from Ezra—he wore a similar drapey red suit last week LOL
  2. This seems to be an unpopular opinion, but I am really liking this season. There’s a great mix of choreographers and there have been some fun, interesting dances. I also think we have seen some great partner relationships that are reminiscent of Season 4’s great partner relationships. I just wish that the partners had had 2 dances each (different styles) in the earlier shows, and that the season were longer (Top 20 to Top 10). I don’t typically vote, and I think TPTB are smart enough to keep the top vote-getters around, so I don’t mind the jidges doing the eliminations, either.
  3. Sorry realdancemom but this weird site is making me type this in a quote box. I just wanted to say that I did like the fact that the judges’ comments were edited since the show was taped. Made it a lot easier to listen to them.
  4. I like Bailey but I thought he was trying too hard. We also commented in our household that it reminded us of Boogie Shoes! A crowd-pleasing song will bring in the votes. Still not missing the lack of saga-length dance backstories! i thought Ezra looked better than Madison in their routine. Better lines. Her feet also bother me at times (like in the girls’ routine tonight). Sophie, with her blonde hair and pink tutu, gave off a very Barbie vibe that wasn’t right for that routine Looked lot better after they ripped off the tutu to reveal the plastic skirt. This routine would have been so good with Mark Kanemura in it instead of Eddie. Anna didn’t look good in that cha cha, but she acted it well, appeared confident, and sold it. Stephanie’s facials really bugged me, but her movement was great. I’ll take Laurieann over Vanessa any day and twice on Sundays. What was the “off” logo on her dress? They really needed 2 routines, in different styles, tonight like they used to have. Seems so unfair to judge them on just one routine.
  5. They used to have a pre-recorded show one night and then a live results show (with a pre-recorded group dance) the next night. Back when this forum wA hosted on TWoP, there was a poster named AprilMarie that went to a lot of the tapings and would post “spoilers” about who was choreographing, which dancers were matched together, what the outfits/sets were like, which routines wowed the audience, etc. It was so exciting to go on the forum and read the spoilers!! Ahhh those were the days....
  6. I have to say that I really enjoyed these dances without the longer video package explaining how this dancer represents Green Envy’s 2nd cousin who had an abusive mom with bipolar disorder and toe cancer before leaving for a military deployment.... Not that some of the backstories aren’t powerful, but it’s also nice to let each viewer see what each sees and come to his/her own interpretation.
  7. I think they do really like her dancing (as well as her alopecia storyline). They’ve had other female dancers with alopecia audition before and not put them through. To my untrained eyes, Mariah seems head and shoulders above the others I’m wondering if they are engineering her win already by casting less competition for her? If she’s the only standout girl, and the boys’ votes are split (Gino, Benjamin, Eddie), she may end up like LoFro and get all the girl votes. i missed costumes and an audience tonight That would have at least given some credence to the idea that making the Top 20 was more special than just making it through another round of auditions.
  8. But they always have alternates, and I’m sure one of those alternates would love to take Gino’s place. If he was 22 in 2008, wouldn’t he be 33 now? I agree with you about Alekasandr’s talent! He has so much better arm movement than Eddie. I think I said earlier that TPTB could be keeping Eddie to create drama for a “shocking” cut since he is somewhat of a fan favorite at this point.
  9. Absolutely. Since he’s been cast in the remake of West Side Story, the show will take all the credit in “discovering” him and making his career. 😂 Is there a dance show role promises as part of the winner’s prize this year?
  10. It seems from past shows that the judges take the choreographers’ opinions into consideration as well, so if someone has trouble picking up the choreo quickly or is whiny, that could be factored in, even though to the viewing audience, the audition routine went well. I think Nigel even referenced that in this week’s show (Academy #2) when he said “these dancers don’t realize that every second here counts” (or something similar).
  11. Late to find this group, glad to see old “friends” here. I’m thinking they may cut Eddie in order to shock everyone and then we have the previously unseen but probably extremely versatile Alexandr to take his place. But I’d think they would want to get a tap duet out of the 2 of them beforehand, which this format doesn’t seem to allow.... Why was I thinking that Stephanie made Top 20 last year? Melany gives me a little Janette Season 5 vibe (in a good way). I hope she stays around.
  12. My friend who works with the city ballet where we live said she thinks the Tahitian costume is too fragile to tour. She thought the Tahitian number was picked to say good-bye to it. I wasn’t stoked that it was picked, but I really enjoyed last night's performance
  13. I usually love the music and get introduced to new songs/artists on this show, but I didn’t really feel the music love until the last several episodes
  14. I watched this show just one night after last week’s show, and this one just didn’t measure up to last week’s (or the preceding week’s), IMO. At this stage of the game, the you can see how hard the dancetestants are working, and how exhausted (and sick, or injured) they are. I think TPTB are pushing Jensen for a “first ever ballroom girl!” win. And so they can brag when she goes to DWTS. Apropos of nothing, just want to add to the Jakob love. #bendyboys! also—WAS Hannahlei supposed to fall into the box??
  15. Due to travel, I just watched last week’s show and this week’s show. I enjoyed both, especially last week’s (Top 8). These were the first shows this season where I actually went back and re-watched dances. Especially liked the girls’ group number, Jensen/Jay Jay’s cha cha, the piece that Robert choreographed, and the mask piece. I was surprised at the gender imbalance in F4. In LoFro’s season, I think they got vot d off one by one and she was the last girl standing. It was a gender-ocide (sorry!). I think TPTB are pushing Jensen bc they’d like a ballroom winner, but it will be interesting to see if having 3 girls splits the vote. But I think that Utah voting bloc is pretty powerful. @Jillibean (I think) mentioned the judges don’t always call out mistakes that even we untrained viewers catch. Someone here in past seasons told us that the judges prepare notes from the choreographers and during dress rehearsal for their comments during the show, so what shows up on the live show may escape comment. That makes sense to me.
  16. I think the perfect judging/critiques were given by Misty Copeland. Always respectful, with pertinent and useful information. I think good critiques help me, a non-dancer, enjoy this show even more. I dislike Vanessa--even when I'm ff'ing through her judging, the way she moves her hands annoys me. I did catch her saying tonight "I have to agree with you, Nigel" and I thought "you probably DO have to agree--it's probably in your contract!" I do like the format this season, but it feels rushed. It seems more like the older seasons. I liked having them do routines in their styles last week, and out of them this week. Solid plan. I really like Magda, but her core seemed very stiff in that "Fever" jazz dance. And that song..... I used to hear new songs on SYTYCD but now we are hearing songs that are either tired like this one (and is there not another song in the whole world that a jive can be danced to, besides "Jump, Jive"?) or old-but-not-retro ("Exes and Ohs"?) I liked the opening number! We haven't had any girls' or boys' group routines, and I miss them! I was a little surprised and mildly disappointed that Slavik and Genessy were put through to Top 10, but now I am really enjoying their partnership. They really remind me of the fun, strong partnerships from past seasons. I think Jay Jay and Jensen are a strong partnership, but Slavik and Genessy are more fun to watch because it's more of a nice surprise when they do well. I thought Evan in particular was trying too hard in the lyrical hip hop. And someone should have really told him to close his mouth and breathe through his nose when he's listening to the critiques. Standing there with his mouth open made him look like a bit of a doofus. I agree that Nigel came across as an ass for blaming the tap fiasco on Chelsea. The Step did not work at all for me. The sound seemed off and it just wasn't as exciting as as Step show.
  17. Does anyone know the real-life time interval between when the dancers were told that they made the top 20 and when they were cut to top 10? I was wondering if they had the top 20, then went home while they were all vetted for the show (criminal checks and all that), then came back to compete for top 10.
  18. I get a little Molleee vibe from Jensen (not in a good way). Last night’s dance was better but she was looking more to the jidges than to Brandon. I am a sucker for a beautiful smile, so while I agree that Emily looked like she was concentrating too hard during her dance, to see her and Fik-shun’s smiles side by side was a real pleasure for me.
  19. @realdancemom, Jay struggled in ballroom but it looked like it was because he was paired with Baby, who was really awful. So the jidges has him dance again with a salsa dancer, and he looked even worse. When Nigel was calling him out about it, he was very confrontational (although admitting he did a poor job) and was not respectful at all.
  20. It seems like we are starting with a way smaller number of dancers than we’ve had in previous years. I really want a Grassy Knoll thread for this site, because my friend and I were speculating last night about how people get paired up for these dances—do the judges put them together, and do they put their favorite contemporary dancers with ballroom dancers in ballroom round, and fave ballrooomers with HH dancers in HH, for example? And the girl who said “I’m never trying out again”—are they gonna bribe or pay her to try out next year so they have good TV? And I think they are keeping Jay bc he’s good TV. May be controversial in some households, and gets people talking.
  21. First of all, thanks to ElectricBoogaloo for posting the videos, and also for the dance-background commentary (and you others--realdancemom, anothermi, crowceildh and others). I truly appreciate reading the insightful comments. I always wonder about the info they have on these dancers beforehand. Pre-knowledge certainly colors how the judges view the auditions. For example, from my (non dancer) perspective, Kory the Broadway kid looked like he had pretty good technique, but crummy choreo (that he probably did himself). So I got the impression that he's not associated with a big-name studio, doesn't have anyone advocating for him, so Nigel felt free to poop all over him. I was likewise surprised that Tiger didn't get through. I don't love the b-boy stuff, but his audition really looked "tight" to me (I think the judges called it "clean"). For Arcadian, I got the feeling that he just couldn't mix the contemporary and the ballet very well (yes I know contemporary comes from ballet). For example, he would be doing some bendy contemporary-type move, but his arms would be out in what I think of as a ballet position. It's like he couldn't commit fully to the parts that weren't strictly classical ballet.
  22. But he did judge for a while and was more bitchy than useful IMO. i do think Nigel has toned down Uncle Perv this year (he still pats himself on the back as much as always), but I think his and Mary's comments are also much less educational than they used to be. As a non-dancer, I feel like I've learned a lot through these years of watching, but this year it's all "our lighting dept is fantastic!" and "Marina in costumes is amazing!" instead of "this style requires quick flicks of the foot" or "you kept the weight back on your heels like you were supposed to" or whatever. my dream panel would be Misty Copeland, an enthusiastic but critique-focused Mary, and dance historian Nigel.
  23. The one thing I disagreed with in this opinion piece is that (to my reading) she said that Travis had no business approaching this topic at all; it should have been left to an artist whose whole body of work is focused here. I think it's good to at least get the discussion going with the "fast food" audience (including myself in that). Would she rather he have ignored the events in Charlottesville and just choreographed a pretty, routine, contemporary dance?
  24. This. TPTB were aiming for "Outta My Mind" with tWitch/Alex Wong, but missed. Was danced well, just kinda boring. Almost for me. I'd substitute Koine for Taylor. On a shallow note: Dwight Rhoden is aging very nicely. VERY nicely ;) And I couldn't abide Cat's hair. Bugged me all night. And once again, please, camera people, show us the WHOLE DANCE in the group dances. Every time the camera just pans from one person to the next, I feel like we're losing a lot of the impact of the group. Go ahead and zoom in when there are little solos, but otherwise, just show us the whole thing, please!
  25. 100% agree on both counts. I didn't like her shadow dance outfit but at least her hair looked pretty good. Anybody else read this as "Mark Five" and think about Speed Racer? No? I love seeing all the different opinions on here. I loved the AS plexiglass dance, hated the LIchtenstein dance, thought Lex was the only one worth watching in the bird dance, hated the shadow dance, and enjoyed all the other dances. DIdn't really miss the solos. I used to listen to the judges to learn something, but now it's not worth listening to 5 minutes of junk for 5 seconds of actual knowlege, so I just FF.
