Just finished S1.  Good story , I liked finding out why River was at Slough House, because of the photo he just happened to take due to his own initiative and Diana got Spider to fuck him up.

But now I wonder why Charles was killed by Lamb.  Diana kept saying that they looked at Standish for treason but couldn’t find anything.  We’re Lamb and Cartwright grandfather traitors?  Or was Charles?  I hope we get the answer to that question.

I may have to add the book series to my queue

Watch Seasons 2 & 3 for some answers. (The book series is really worth it. Better than the TV series, IMO)

  2. I don’t remember the movie very well and never read the books. I thought the first episode very slow paced and way too much in love with its admittedly artful black and white photography. It seemed to me the photographic choices were driving the narrative rather than being in service to telling the story.

  3. Watched the first two episodes yesterday. Really enjoying it, but I’m very wary of where this is heading, based on the teasing of a shocking plot twist in all the publicity.

Not a fan of the Ding Dong bell!  The whole concept of the show is for us to guess who is behind the mask.  It makes no sense when we get an episode with no unmasking.  It is obvious that the showrunners do not listen to the fans.  Most fans do not want the bell.

I'm old because I have never heard of the thong song.  That dude who sang it, I think I've heard of him......maybe not!  😁

Well, they did unmask one of the final three…

  5. I will confess I haven’t read the book. While I am enjoying the show, dramatically something seems off, with Blackthorne largely being a spectator to all the machinations going on around him. He effectively has close to zero involvement in the plot, especially given that there are only two episodes left.  I guess there are intended to be additional seasons in which he is more involved.

Would it have been too on-the-nose if the "Oxford 5" grad guy was dying from lung cancer instead of pancreatic cancer?
All the cool kids smoke on this show.  (At least the edgy, hard-driven  ones do)

Yeah, I thought the amount of smoking on this show kinda weird. Maybe the producers got a subsidy from the tobacco industry. 😉

  7. Given the hype for this series, I thought the first episode sort of dull and disappointing. I’m about halfway through the second and don’t think it improves. Did not see the previews.

  8. Joe Bastianich sang better than Robin, at least for a Billy Joel song.

I pretty much knew the back stories of all the chefs plus Tucci, so I knew they were all wrong guesses, since none worked on Wall Street.

I’m not feeling Cosmo Jarvis as Blackthorn either. The rest of the cast is superb but Jarvis is not measuring up for me. He’s not sympathetic. It’s more than the character being crude and ignorant, he’s just not pleasant to watch.

I don’t like him either, but I’m torn on whether the fault lies with the actor or the scriptwriters. They seem to have written him as a boorish one-note character.

The lack of engagement here with posts speaks volumes. Husband and I made it through 20 minutes.

I made it through 15, mostly because I found Alice totally annoying and I said, “why bother?”

I don't have an opinion about Rita yet, but it seemed like she kept saying that everyone had a great voice, which wasn't true. I don't know where she lives, but I wonder if she will have issues guessing the American contestants, especially ones that aren't singers and are more pop culture related. I know there are lots of Brits who are popular in the UK but that I have no clue about.

I admit to being cynical, but I always thought that most of the guesses were fed to the panel by the producers anyway. If that’s the case, she should have no problem.

Really liked the show.  I knew fashion icons would come back to bite someone .

Question about strategy, remember the lady with dark hair that was on a streak…she always answered her questions very fast.  The other contestants just answered at a normal speed.  What is the best strategy?

Since the clock is running down, I would think answering fast gives you more of a time cushion if you run into difficult questions and have to pass.

I noticed that as well, like sometimes they demanded first and last names of celebrities/historical figures, and other times, not.

With the people, I think it was a bit like Jeopardy when you answer Roosevelt or  Bush, you'll be asked to be more specific. It would have been nice if they could have had Rob play that role of asking for more information, rather than contestants flailing around with limited time, thinking they gave a wrong answer.

Yes we are hearing English instead of subtitling the entire show, while the those, besides the priest for whom Portuguese is presumably their native language those talking  to Blackthorne are using Portuguese a second language they share in common.

I could speculate that maybe the Spanish pilot Rodriguez could speak  English or maybe Spanish. If a Priest did speak in English the Japanese would rightly suspect that they are hiding something.

I find it odd that Blackthorne would be fluent in Portuguese, or at least I would have appreciated a line or two establishing the fact somewhere in the episode.

  15. Saw the first two episodes tonight and am confused on the translating. Are we to assume all the English we are hearing is actually Blackthorne speaking Portuguese to the translators (and they to him)? For example, we have no indication that the Japanese woman speaks English yet she is his translator.

Both revisions last night were really good- the woman who (among other things) was missing an ear, and the woman with a huge divot out of her tummy from lipo.

I don't think I heard any explanation of the ear lady's full problem, just she was born without the ear. But she had had 103 surgeries, and her face was very asymmetrical. Due to previous problems with her breathing, they had to do the revision with only local anesthesia, which seemed pretty amazing to me.

The lipo girl had certainly been savaged by the surgeon, but I did think it was odd that she claimed she went through the whole ordeal 'with no one'. She didn't have any relative or friend who could help? Since they revealed that the surgeon was no longer in business, I hope he either went bankrupt or lost his medical insurance (or both).

I think they said the ear lady was born without part of her jawbone, too, which was the cause of the asymmetry, but they didn’t fully explain her condition.

Pretty good show last night. Even the person in the traditional wacko slot was better than usual.

Once you've eliminated the generic "planet", wouldn't you start naming planets (after eliminating "Earth", "Jupiter" (big red spot missing), and "Saturn" (no rings)), figuring it's got to be one of them, even if you didn't recognize the planet? He did it twice (missing both Venus and Neptune)! I'm sure you can name 5 planets (6 if you count Pluto) in less than 3 seconds, especially if you claim you know all the planets.

Yes, but funny things can happen under stress.

Are they reusing categories/images from European versions of the show?  When they had the Birds category it looked like the picture they used for a robin was a European Robin and not the American Robin. IIRC the contestant passed.

You’re right, it was a European robin. I thought it was very odd at the time. I didn’t know there were Euro versions of the show.

Last night they showed a strange orange colored picture of Venus, which seemed purposely inserted to fool a contestant, who guessed Mars.

Another thing that doesn’t make sense is why Jacob doesn’t call Leo when he cannot get hold of June. They seem pretty close and he knows Leo is waiting for him at the football practice. Weird.

This puzzled me too. Also, in the argument June has with Leo later, she calls Jacob “my” son, not “our” son. I assumed Leo was his father, but probably not (if this was pointed out in the show earlier, I missed it). Maybe they're not that close from the kid’s view.

It also aggravates me that the cc spells the artist’s father’s name (St. John Fitzsimmons) “Singeon”! And the mother even pronounced it “sin-gee-un”. They just seem like annoying red herrings, but obviously they’re up to something. Whether it’s related to the main story is doubtful.

I think "Singeon" is one of those British slurred pronunciations, similar to the way that Magdalene College Oxford is pronounced "Maudlin", or Worcester "Wooster". I've seen St. John pronounced that way in other places.

I am also having trouble with following this show, although I'm not exactly sure why.
