I have worked at a library for almost 30 years. I do not have a Masters in Library Science so I am considered a "specialist". Most people who do not have a masters at least have attended a 2  year college and have an LTA certificate. It stands for Library Technical Assistant. I didn't need one as I had a 2 years associates and that trumped the LTA. So if they have an LTA program, while the person might not be a "librarian", they are probably in training to be one.

TBH, there are people with degrees that I have worked with thru the years at the reference desk and I was better at the job then they were. And I would cover the desk with my 2 year degree while Mr. or Ms. Masters asked me for help.

Former Senior Library Service Specialist of 27 yrs here. I cosign ALL OF THIS.

Aurora told Oscar that Maud went to Paris after her mother died.  But there's no time reference for that.

I've also considered whether the Maude that we see is really Maude Beaton or an impersonator.  If this were another series, the real Maude would have been killed in Paris and this person taken over her identity.  But I think that's too far afield for Fellowes.  I can see the companion coming into play somehow, otherwise, why was it mentioned?  It doesn't make sense for the real Maude Beaton to be in NY, but never seen, allowing her companion to impersonate her and con Oscar.  If this is an impersonation, I think it's more likely that the real Maude Beaton is still in Paris.  The Maud we see could be an ex-companion, former friend, lady's maid, etc., taking advantage of the real Maud's absence.

But again, if there's a real Maud Beaton, she would have debuted in NYC, would be known among that level of society, and someone in Newport should know her.

Holy hell, I'm putting way too much thought/time into this.

You are probably putting more thought into it than Fellowes. I appreciate the ideas you and other posters are presenting here. They are actually thoughtful and intriguing.

I think there is a ton of evidence that points to Beaton and Crowther scamming Oscar, but what gives me slight pause is Beaton visiting Aurora to feel her out to see if Oscar is just a gold digger and Crowther laying on the whole "Are you sure you want to do this to poor little Maude? She's so innocent, she doesn't deserve to be used" angle so thickly. So I am wondering if maybe this isn't a scam, but a test devised by Maud/Gould to determine if Oscar really is worthy of her and her fortune. I mean, at every turn, Crowther is saying "don't do this," but Oscar just keeps going ahead with it. Maybe Crowther is a Pinkerton?

That would make a lot of the evidence it's a scam red herrings, though, and this doesn't seem to be a show that does red herrings. Scam or test, a lot of work has gone into it.

Who is Maud's "paid companion" Aurora mentioned? That's another monkey wrench because there have also been a few hints that Maud is looking for a beard just like Oscar is.

That Maude and Crowther are testing oscar would be a fabulous plot twist! Which prolly means that it won't happen.

Also, I want a spin-off series about Peggy's family. I want to see how her mother spends her day: what does she do? who does she see?

Absolutely! And I'd love to know how Peggy's once enslaved father achieved the success that he has. And her mom and dad's journey to New York.

I didn't think the behavior was fake, it just felt like those guys were waiting outside for their cue to come in and start racist-ing so Peggy would get a wake up call. And being Peggy it seems like this is the type of thing that will ultimately make her more of an activist. Because she'll be able to run away back home but that poor woman running the restaurant is still getting sexually assaulted.

Yes, even those that aren't race related, like the baby story. I think it would be interesting for Ada to get interested in injustice, actually. She's got an Edith Bunker temperment, which makes her open-minded and believably someone who would care, and as a reverend Forte might do work that would bring it to her attention and get her out of the bubble she lives in now.

Heh. Your use of racist-ing made me chuckle. I get your point.

Yes, I'd love to see Ada take an interest in tackling injustice, too. I feel that, last season, she seemed more...worldly? Aware? Slightly more feisty? She seems dumbed down and more sheltered this season.

The scene felt off. It was like the two white guys didn't belong in the scene. It felt like they were doing too much in the part.

Rather than appearing as convincing characters, they seemed like characters portrayed by actors who are trying to be convincing characters, and I wasn't convinced.

As a Black woman who grew up in and still lives in the south...that scene didn't feel off or contrived. It felt very true. That boorish behavior and the placating reactions to it felt pretty spot on.

Sure, there was racism in New York, and Peggy has definitely experienced it. Black people in the south lived with a different kind, the violent, deadly kind that could erupt at any moment, for the slightest reason or no reason at all.

Someone mentioned that Peggy is this series Edith, and I agree. This feels like, as the main Black character, she is burdened with carrying all the harshest realities of life and I don't like it.

I think it’s more that he found Enid a phony bore, whereas Bertha has charming repartee and quick comeback.

But still, his former hosts should not have had to find out about his change of plans via the morning paper. To me, that shows that the Duke is tacky and an opportunist. And Bertha is too excited by her royal "catch" to see the red flags.

  8. Ok...Looooord, the Russell reunion got me tearing up over here! The raw emotion and passion between those two! His pleading for forgiveness! The way she exhaled and melted in relief in his embrace!

And the scene where he blocked that server at the fancy dinner, "Mrs. Russell is exactly where she should be." And fixing all problems by throwing copious amounts of cash at them...

Lord, I see what you have done for others...sigh.

Do we know who gave that dinner?

I found that Duke to be rather mediocre. And a boor to just ditch the Wintertons without notice.

Peggy is such a sharp, bright, shining young woman. I want nothing but the best for her. I appreciate her storyline, but it feels kind of out of place among the more frivolous yet life and death sopa opera shenanigans of the rest of the show.

Social death vs potential actual death.

Why did he marry her so suddenly - even if they had a relationship and she became pregnant, that's not the reason enough for an upper class man to marry a lower class woman.

He's an old man, and Turner used her magic pointy tittie powers on him. He didn't stand a chance.

  10. I was so sad that the series is over! I thought there were 8 episodes. I'm hungry for more! I might just go back and watch it all again. It's leaving Max after October 31.

I appreciate all the excellent and thoughtful takes on here. The only thing I want to add is that I thought that Louis looked absolutely, breathtakingly gorgeous at the ball. His makeup and hair...ahhhhh! Chef's kiss. That 18th century style suited him so well.

Sunny said, “This country was founded on slavery.”

    No Sunny. It was not.

Well, slavery contributed greatly to the US becoming a prosperous and dominant world force.

There were a few things that Sunny said in the rerun today (Friday) that I thought were misleading or at least open to misinterpretation: When someone (Alyssa? Sara?) made a point that the experiences of many students varied (black kid of extremely well-off parents with good grades compared with white kid of poorer parents [Appalachia? potato farm in Idaho? Brooklyn?] with same grades applying to the same school), Sunny said that the poor white kid (PWK) couldn't understand the experiences of the rich black kid (RBK). I thought, of course not - PWK has probably only imagined about going to high-end elementary and secondary schools with all the benefits. Yes, she hasn't been subjected to the same kinds of discrimination that RBK probably was, but I suspect she would have experienced plenty of other types of discrimination in addition to having financial barriers to high-end education. Obviously RBK couldn't understand the life experiences of PWK either. Any combination of RK and PK are going to have vastly different life experiences good and bad.  I hope that Sunny's point was that we never know what other people have had to deal with regardless of their background and so should be understanding, and maybe look for what we have in common, but that wasn't clear in the moment.

I think that the impact of social class is never discussed enough in the US. I read once that a person will have more in common, in some ways, with their social class than their race. I mean, my daughter, the Obama girls, Willow and Jaiden Smith and Blue Ivy are all Black, but my daughter is having a vastly different experience of life than my daughter, lol. And, trust, there would be some wealthy Black and Brown people impacted if they got rid of legacy admissions.

  13. OK.

I am so GLAD that Whoopi pulled Alyssa up about welfare and work requirements. Alyssa was showing her privilege and blind adherence to GOP talking points in that moment. Without even thinking about it, Alyssa was willing to punch down on poor people.

From personal experience, and this was years ago: You DON'T get that much, and you already DO have to actively be looking for a job. I am glad that those benefits were there for me and my family during a time we were struggling. They are part of the societal safety net, and people shouldn't be shamed for using them.

Sorry, Alyssa but the Inflation Reduction Act is working. Inflation is still too high at 5ish%, but that’s so much better than it was over the past couple years. Quit with the misinformation.

And THIS is why I will never like her. She may come off as more pleasant, "nicer" and not as combative, but underneath all that, she's all about misinformation (if it doesn't suit her team) and what aboutisms, even when there's no there, there.

    THIS.

  15. I really enjoyed this show and hope it comes back for a second season.

I appreciated that the women and girls were allowed to be complicated and messy and contradictory and even unlikable. That was great to see.

I love Roxy's swag and her unabashed embrace of her power.

I love how Eve is consolidating her power and tying it into something bigger. She and Roxy are gonna be a FORCE.

I love how cunning Tatiana is, and how she used her femininity and the general's misogyny to guide the soldiers into a trap.

I love Margot's exploration of her powers, and how her relationship with her older daughter is developing. The family dynamics are very interesting. I'm disappointed with the husband's attitude, but not surprised. The recruiting of the son into the manosphere is definitely gonna bear some interesting fruit.

  16. I think Dr. Beck was a monster. I mean, he actually allowed his 3rd wife to stay on birth control when it was completely unnecessary!

I'm glad the wives found resolution. And Ruby’s reunion with her daughter was very touching.

A very small detail: I love how Ruby’s normally tightly coiled hair was puffy after her struggle with Isla in the water.

Is the show really up for cancelation?
