Even Vulcan, which helped found the Federation, doesn’t really claim Starfleet and has their own interests.

Disco established that the Vulcans have their own uniformed exploratory service. the Vulcan Expeditionary Group.  Michael wanted to join, but Sarek could only convince them to take Spock, who ultimately turned it down to go to Starfleet Academy.

We've also seen their ships in Lower Decks, so they continue to exist at least until the 2380s or so.

Not counting Discovery, which series is set the latest? Picard, right? Augments are still generally banned, aren't they?

The latest we have info in is the first season of Prodigy, which is set about 15 years before Picard.  And yes, Augments are still banned of of that period.

No crazy ass Captain Braxton, even though he was trapped on Earth for 30 years and should still be there.

That episode was set 25 years before the stuff in this season.

What can I say about Halle that hasn’t already been said? She was perfection. She better be getting some casting offers soon, because she proved she can act and sing.

If The Color Purple is as good as it appears to be, I wouldn't be shocked if she got an Oscar nomination.

  5. Bond is a different case for me because with no actor really clearly identified with the part (as much as Sean Connery was the OG, Roger Moore did more movies and arguably Daniel Craig had more of a culture footprint), so you get it refreshed every ten years or so.  Different actor, different vibe. Same reason Doctor Who works.

Also, it is a massive misread of history to describe the Bond of yore as “banger after banger.”  Half of Moore’s movies are nigh unwatchable.

So I rewatched Howard last night—thank Jesus that those idiots at Disney+ didn’t delete it after everyone raised holy hell over it being on their purge list. Man, I sure wish he was still here.

I think the live-action movie really drove home how one-of-a-kind he was.  Lin-Manuel Miranda attempted to ape Howard’s style in his Moana songs, and while I think they’re good, they just lack that spark of genius.  And comparing their lyrics head-to-head, as TLM allowed, really lays that bare.

And maybe this is the chance to correct the mistake (and I’m being generous) the Academy made when it gave all the Oscars the original deserved to Out of Africa.

And the nomination Taraji should have gotten for Hidden Figures.

“If you loved Barbie, this movie is for you. If you hate Barbie, this movie is for you.”

I have to admit, that made me laugh.

And honestly, I'm calling that an incredibly effective trailer.  It made me a lot more interested in seeing it.

  9. The pending Little Mermaid release has gotten me doing a deep dive into the Disney Renaissance, and I am struck by how queer the whole thing was.  Yes, you've got the obvious campy villains, but there are some pretty evident trans themes in both LM and obviously Mulan.  In the case of the latter (and from what I know of the folktale about Hua Mulan, I still think this), it's barely subtextual.

"Reflection" is already the saddest of the "I Want" songs: Ariel wants to explore, Belle wants adventure, Mulan...wants to be free to be herself.  But put the lyrics, especially the longer version that was only released as a single, in the mouth of a trans person ("Must I pretend that I'm/Someone else for all time?") and it's heartbreaking.

Anyway, on the whole, Melissa works. Nobody is Pat Carroll, so the best thing to do for Ursula is just let loose with your inner diva and have a blast, and Melissa understood that assignment.

If you can't have Pat Carroll or a drag queen, and Queen Latifah's already done it, I think that was as close as we could reasonably come.

So in terms of top-level cosmic sort of villains, where does the MCU go next?

Depends on how closely they want to integrate the X-Men into the MCU.  Not so much Magneto, but they've got the Shi'ar, Phalanx, and Apocalypse, just off the top of my head.  And if they want to do a real throwback, Inferno touched on just about every character.
