  1. I've started a quote section in my bujo from the book. I'm really, really pissed at my job right now, and I used the epi title on my weekly spread this week.
  2. Add me to the don't really like Lucy train. Why didn't Margaret smother George with a pillow? Strangulation is so intimate - and if she had used a pillow, she wouldn't have had to look at him. I odn't understand Fanny being so scared. Yes, Margaret wouldn't take Emily back, but Margaret has always treated the girls with respect. I keep changing my mind about who Quigley is going to offer up, Emily or puritan daughter.
  3. Thanks for the posts on the bible! Until I came here, I thought they actually would have read the revised version. To me, the KJV doesn't make sense for the fundy's to read. Too many big words and weird language.
  4. In the book, Offred says Janine was making up her rape story. I see the shaming of the rape victim to be a way of making them want to wear the head to toe stuff. Slovenly Muse also pointed out other things in the book that were done to make the women accept their current treatment more readily. One thing I never understood in the book either; what exactly is a "shredder" baby. I know its a baby that wasn't 100 percent healthy, but I don't know what the term alludes to. Allowing the handmaids to literally tear a man apart lets them vent out their anger. Aunt Lydia deliberately rouses them to an even higher anger level.
  5. I'm hoping Jill follows her mom's lead and actually goes to the hospital for this birth. I don't think the home birth thing was handed down from Mom, because most of Michelles kids were born in the hospital. Jill is so big, she either has an even larger baby than Izzy, or twins. Where are these giant babies coming from? None of these parents or grandparents are particularly large.
  6. The halting of the credit cards is why I really hate that everything now is going to cards and the phone. Ever since I read the book in the 80's, I've worried about how easy it would be to pull the same stunt. I know that Offred got banished to her room in the book, but I don't remember the interrogation. I too was wondering why she didn't claim Aunt Lydia caused it. Nick seems very blase about talking to Offred. To answer the above question - I believe Gilead does keep couples together who are "married" in their eyes. June and Luke were trying to escape Gilead - get Hannah and June to safety.
  7. There was a throw away comment that the problem could be with the men, but that there weren't tests done to them. Basically going to the historical view point that all pregnancy problems and baby sex/defects were mother caused. I'd really like to see an unattractive or overweight handmaid. also, I know pregnancy's were rare, but it would be nice to see at least one or two other pregnant ones. The comment "who is it" when the birth mobile comes makes no sense otherwise because obviously it would have to be Ofwarren (Janine). ETA: I meant to say "weren't" tests done to them. Patriarchal society- it's the womens fault
  8. In the show, they seem to point out theres more to it than they've given birth before. Rebel Ofglen (we need to find a way to differentiate the 2 I guess) mentioned that she had 2 good ovaries, and that's why she's a handmaid.
  9. Its a very weird juxtaposition going from watching Harlots to The Handmaids Tale. Women being used for the same thing is such very different ways.
  10. The guy playing Nick doesn't do it for me either. Joseph Fiennes is capturing the lost feeling the commander gives off very well.
  11. I was worried the preview had given too much away because I thought the shot of the pregnant woman missing an eye was Offred. So relieved last night to see it was crazy chick. I wonder if some flashback scenes will start showing more of the breakdown of society. They have hinted at the fact that women are not allowed to read anymore (well, at least the servants), but non-readers may not have picked up on it. The book was pretty good at explaining how they ended up this way. Also, the fact that everyone is completely clothed on ceremony night, and that Offred and the Commander are only allowed to touch in the genital region is kind of important. Elizabeth Moss is killing it with the voiceover - and her facial expressions are great. I like the person playing Ofglen, she has very expressive eyes. Two scenes that stood out to me were when they captured her daughter - Elizabeth Moss just killed me in that scene, and when the commander shuts the door in Serena's face during the meeting and she is crushed.
  12. I think if it had been historically accurate, the women would have refused to sit at the table with Charlotte.
  13. Good on Charlotte for taking revenge. What an idiot George is. I really wish there was at least one decent rich guy - but they're all goobers. Wouldn't the french girl be a good candidate for a keeper? Shes's beautiful and educated, and apparently accomplished. Doesn't the baud get a take of the contract between the mistress and the keeper? I hope that nothing evil comes of Emily being turned down by Margaret. Margaret didn't do it meanly, adn it was very pragmatic. I liked her trying to smooth things over with Quigley. Glad Quigley junior isn't dead. So, the only decent man we've met is Will - right? Now that Lucy has finally said she isn't cut out for this, I really wish Margaret had listened.
  14. This is Offreds second or third posting from what I remember (it's been a while). Serena holds it over her head that she has to have a baby this time, or she'll be sent away.
  15. I don't think Henry is ugly, he just has resting bitch face. He just looks so over it. Jessa is definitely NOT buying used and saving the difference.
  16. Why is he wired with a microphone? It's not like he's speaking to a crowd of thousands.
  17. So maybe me thinking Izzy's black eyes weren't accidents wasn't too far fetched? Maybe Jill has problems with Cathy because Cathy is so different than JB's mother. She's the one who lived with them and did the laundry and stuff, right? It looks like Cathy wants to be firmly in the "grandmother" role, and has no interest in taking over as "secondary" or even "primary" mother. My MIL and I loved each other for the first few years. She has MS, and unfortunately, the mood swings that come with it have driven a huge wedge between her and her son, and thus me. It's very difficult to be understanding to someone who one minute tells you you're an awesome parent, than the next, belittles and insults everything you do. Add to the fact that she is very delusional about her son's personality.
  18. I thought for sure Lucy had shot Lord or lady Repton instead of the deer. Loved her hunting outfit though. I didn't get exactly what the Reptons were trying to accomplish with the hunting outing.
  19. I'm rewatching. Violet and the singer girl seem to have some sort of understanding with the dominatrix. Violet took 2 of her culls to the dominatrix's house in the first episode, and the dominatrix woke them violet and the other girl up to go look for Mary Cooper.Lucy doesn't seem to have a problem with her future until after her trip to the Reptons. She jokes with the other girls and is saucy with men until then.
  20. I've always wondered about male prostitutes. How do they get it up for someone they aren't attracted to? You can't really fake an erection. Haxby doing Charlotte: how could he not be hot for her when he sees Lord Moron and her in the act all the time? I couldn't quite figure out what Charlotte was supposed to be thinking though afterwards. I know they need Lucy's income to survive, but if her mom thought so much of her, why didn't she raise her to be the Madam or purveyor of culls? Lucy doesn't seem to have a problem with other people doing the deed, and she sees the reality of the situation.
  21. Jilly did say that Derk was going to ESL classes. If he needs a translator to "minister" how can he possibly teach an ESL class?
