  1. In the promo for next week's episode, I was trying to figure out who Callie was talking to about the secret she is keeping from Lena and Stef... does that look like Rafael (the guy from the drop-in center)? The Fosters - 2x16 Official Preview
  2. Did anyone else get an initial weird vibe from StoreClerkGirl in that scene where Callie buys the earrings? For a second, it was as if a witch from one of the CW shows had walked on to the wrong studio lot and put a hex on that bracelet or the earrings or something, the way she stared after Callie. It threw me trying to figure that out until the cops showed up at the end. I also read in some sub-text between Lena and Monty. And since we have learned from experience that there is never any throw-any dialogue or scenes in Fosters-land, I smell trouble looming. What made that movie theater scene so thrilling was the way Hayden captured every emotion you feel at that age the first time someone you like returns your affections, and he did all of it completely with his facial expression. Awesome stuff.
  3. possibilities, unfortunately last time I tried the ABC Family app to watch an episode, it turned out that DirecTV was one of the providers that ABC didn't have an arrangement with to show episodes. Don't know if that is changed or if online is different. But they do almost always show the previous week's episode right before the new episode on Monday nights (7pm EST) on ABCF. If you get really desperate and have iTunes, you can always plunk down $2 or $3 and download the new episode, they are usually up in the iTunes store about 24-48 hours after airtime. +1 to this. I really liked that Callie/Robert conversation, and it was an example of what they do very well on this show, that is dialogue that is not only real but tends not to pick sides for the audience. That conversation was so promising, and then it just derailed out of control. I do like how Callie called Robert out on his schtick - this is a man who is used to being able to make whatever reality he wishes possible because he has always had the means to do so. He wants to be a belated parent, but he can't just snap his fingers or dial up his lawyer and win Callie over that easily. The casual way he just talked about how he would have adopted Jude too if he had known or he would give Jude his own room shows how much he is out of his element. (Also, IMO Kerr Smith is doing a nice job with adding layers to what could have been just a cliche antagonist character). Other thoughts: - I did not see the twist with the police showing up at Callie's work coming at all. I had a feeling the storyline wasn't done because they kept teasing it, but it didn't occur to me that they would actually go the route of putting Callie in legal jeopardy - I should have known better. - The cool thing about the twist was having Callie choose to call Robert instead of Stef and Lena - there are so many extra dimensions added to the plot because of that choice. I don't blame Callie for doing it - these are probably higher legal stakes for Callie than anything that has happened to date, and he obviously has the means to deal with the system better than Stef and Lena do - but my guess is that she is going to feel enormous guilt over it. And it will be interesting to see how Robert deals with this as he tries to build a relationship with Callie, and whether he takes the unselfish road as this plays out. - Geez, Brandon's musician ego is getting a little out of control isn't it? That's a criticism of the character of course, not the writers - it makes perfect sense that he would get a little big for his britches ("How are you going to play my songs if I'm not on the tour?"... LOL). - That scene where he finally overcomes the injury was nice though - my prediction is this "tour" thing falls apart, considering he may be warming up to Idyllwild and now we have Marianna trying to crash the party. - Speaking of which, Marianna you are fast becoming the most enjoyable character of this season... - I know we are all squishy and "AWWW" about the Jude/Connor developments (again, the acting in that theater scene was brilliant), but I am nervous this whole thing will not end well. Connor is not willing to admit his feelings openly and he does not have the loving, supportive household that Jude does to make it possible. At some point Jude's heart is going to be broken - that "don't be such a little bitch" comment by Connor a couple episodes ago was a warning sign. This is such an obviously personal storyline for the show's creators and they have taken such care in crafting it, that I think they are going to make sure that the story progresses in a realistic and plausible way. And unfortunately I don't think that means a fairytale path for these two.
  4. Somebody please just give Hayden Byerly an Emmy. Right now. If nothing else, then just for his facial expressions in that one scene in the movie theater. Holy crap. More later, but I just wanted to get that out there.
  5. Thanks for laying out that out snailey! The timeline makes more sense now - basically they have been through almost one entire school year in the course of the two seasons. That it took almost two full TV seasons to get there is what throws me sometimes.
  6. Thanks for posting this! That was a great discussion. Interesting to hear Teri talk about her working relationship with Sherri - this cast clearly has a boatload of chemistry. I also had not realized that Alec Mapa and Danny Nucci had been in a series together way back when... FYI here is the direct link to the original webcast from the Emmy's website: An Evening with the Fosters
  7. This episode had me cracking up - we were in need of a "light" episode for a change, and I don't think we've seen one quite like this yet with the constant snarky banter. I had always hoped they would do some sort of "family road trip" episode where we could see everyone together and best-laid plans start to unravel. It was most welcome! What I liked most was how each individual characterization came out in the setting: - of course Mariana would figure out a way to "glamp" instead of camp (I thought she had a generator going for a second to run her curling iron..) - of course Callie would hover over Jude like a mother hen, and Jude would eventually tell her to go fly a kite - of course Jesus and Brandon would both get lost in the woods trying to cover one of Jesus' half-baked schemes (Jesus: "I think I remember seeing that star, must be that way." Brandon: "Thanks a lot, Magellan") - of course Stef would think twerking was a form of social media - of course Lena would not only know what twerking was, but be able to demonstrate a damn fine rendition of it There was a nice comedy vibe to the episode, especially when the whole "Anna-is-pregnant" thing came out and everyone went off on each other. I think out of all of the characters (except for maybe Stef), the writers have really figured out Mariana's "voice" and know how to write great comic dialogue for her. The stuff that comes out of that girl's mouth and the way she says it is hilarious: - Mariana: "I brought double-down comforters and a curling iron and blow dryer that plug into the car. So we're set." Callie: "For what?" Mariana: "I... don't understand the question." HA! Her delivery was priceless) - "Did you know that there are nanoparticles in many sunscreens that show up in people's livers?" YES! They are in rarefied company - Eric and Tami Taylor set the bar. That whole blow-up they had with who was the "nice" mom and who was the disciplinarian was not only hilarious, but very intelligent and real. The rapid-fire dialogue reminded me of Eric and Tami also - they challenge each other. Personally, I like where the Brandon-and-Callie situation has been going the last few episodes. They have been having some nice moments where we get to see the particular way they relate to each other - more like what we saw in 1A. I am perfectly fine with NOT putting a label on their relationship right now - whether they are going to be together in the end or not, let it happen naturally without the artificial stress of the will-Callie-be-adopted-or-not question. What I think is touching is that they are both fighting so hard for the other one not to give up their dream. It is kind of typical of what they have always been since the first episode. "Heteronormative" is my word for the day...
  8. ET Online interview with Peter Paige about season 2B... since it's a press interview with the show's creator I guess you can't call his "hints" spoilers, but he does give some indications of where the show will be going in the next 10 episodes so bewarned... Peter Paige interview
  9. Surprisingly, that did not suck - at least not compared to some of the reviews I was reading, and definitely not compared to the horrible cliche promos NBC was running. Fluffy cotton-candy, to be sure, but sometimes that's all you want. At least NBC seems to have a decent budget to throw at this vs what, say, USA Network could do. There are some notable supporting cast members - aside from Alfre Woodard and James Remar, I also recongnized Dennis Boutsikaris as the CIA Director. And, diva reputation aside, Katherine Heigl can act, and look really really good while she's at it. The tension with the "Save-the-doctor-vs-get-the-bad-guy" plot, including the sequences with the terrorist videos, was actually compelling enough to carry the episode. And I was intrigued with the dynamics of the last scene where Charlie (I cannot call her Charleston with a straight face, sorry) has the exchange in her house with shady-black-ops-guy. Clearly there is some murky stuff going on between those two. Many of the other plot devices were really eye-roll-worthy, but not any worse than, say, 24 might have done. I am a little confused how someone doing the PDB would be also running operations or making operational decisions at the CIA, but it is Hollywood after all - where a JAG lawyer can also fly fighter planes on the side. I'll roll with it. Its on my DVR-list, willing to see where this one goes for a few episodes at least...
  10. Does anyone know where Talya ran off to? I don't think it has ever been addressed in the show canon... She's just disappeared with no explanation (unless I missed something). They had explanations for Lexi and a few other recurring characters who left, but not Talya. I actually kind of miss her in the current season as an antagonist - for me Crazy-Hayley is a poor-man's substitute. Last we heard from her she planted the fake ID in Callie's purse in Metropolis, I think?
  11. GenevieveS, that is a really good point re: Callie's situation. She has no real security until that adoption goes through. Does anyone know if the appropriate authorities ever became aware of Callie's reason for running away vis a vis Brandon? I know she stated it in group sessions at GU, and I know Rita was aware of it because of that and also catching her sneaking around to see Brandon, but did any of the social workers ever become privy to that information? It would seem that would be a big deal as to her status living in the Fosters' household.
  12. gmc89, welcome to the party! You captured a lot of my thoughts so all I have to say is "ditto"! I kind of alluded to this in my earlier comment up-thread but you said it more succinctly. I think they have a beautiful friendship and it is one of the parts of the show I enjoy the most. It was Brandon after all who was Callie's biggest supporter when she acknowledged the rape, and it was Callie who helped Brandon pull things together when Stef was shot. I don't really care if they go the romantic route or not (and I think exploring that can be done in a thoughtful way if the writers chose to), as long as they retain that unique connection that they have. I do believe that the biggest reason the show got off track in season 1B was that Stef and Lena started acting like idiots and completely out of character as the whole pregnancy arc started. They had established in 1A two fully-fleshed-out, strong-but-flawed characters to be the bedrock of the family and then they had them do some very uncharacteristically immature and flighty things that were not at all consistent with the original characterizations. (I think in interviews the actresses may have even hinted at that problem?) In 2A they are back to giving Teri and Sherri some real substance to chew on and they have Stef and Lena back to the people we knew them to be at the beginning of the series. Also in 1B you had Callie out of the house either running away or at GU for almost half the episodes and it destroyed the family dynamic IMHO. Hopefully there is not an extended stint where Callie is again out of the house by being forced to live with the Quinns or something, because then we would be right back to what I think got the show off-track last year. The Fosters need to be around that big kitchen table together or its not The Fosters.
  13. The Rohrsach Test that is Brandon/Callie continues... Did we ever think it would go away? Personally, I have always liked following the evolution of their relationship since the first episode - and I don't think it really needs to be labelled at this point. One of the more significant insights Callie shared in this episode (pointed out by someone else) was when Sophia pointed out how Callie's "eyes light up" when she talks about him, and Callie responded "of course, he's my best friend..." I thought that was pretty huge, and probably defines their connection asmuch as anything at this point. I'm content letting them figure it out. It made sense that with Callie's world crashing down - again - she would reach out to him. I too am optimistic that the writers are not going to let this go without pointing out the dangers that impulsive act brings. Plus, we don't yet know how Brandon will respond since the credits rolled in the middle their kiss - for all we know, he might just pull away and there is a role reversal where Callie is the one pushing a bit more. One thing that this show always brings is lots of messy "gray" area, and letting the viewers come up with their own judgments about what is right and wrong. I think there is much to mine here with the both the Quinn's storyline (repercussions of Robert and Sophia's actions in hurting Callie, the dilemma that Robert is facing, the consequences of whataver actions Sophia takes behind that bathroom door) as well as with how Stef and Lena handle the Jude and Connor situation (which I think will be handled with considerable care and thoughtfulness considering the point-of-view of the show's creators). For example, it didn't occur to me until afterwards how much of a problem having Jude and Connor be unchaperoned during that trip could be - I mean, we wouldn't be OK with boys and girls of that age sharing a tent, right? If Connor and Jude are discovering feelings for each other, how DO Stef and Lena deal with that? Do the rules have to change? Lena is responding with justified anger to the actions of Connor's dad, but she is failing to see that she has a blind spot here that she has to own up to as an educator and a parent.
  14. I was listening to the Afterbuzz podcast this morning and they had Mandy Moore as a guest... it was very very good. I wish Mandy could take a week off of choreography and be a judge, because she is really honest and substantive with both her praise and critiques. I haven't listened to the whole thing yet but a few interesting highlights were: - her thoughts on detailed "stories" for a dance (she doesn't like doing that, prefers to keep it simple) - Bridget was sick on show day this week (may have been why she was "flat" in performance); - Tanisha and Rudy's number (that Mandy choreographed) was apparently a train-wreck in dress rehearsal; - Serge is probably the hardest-working dancer they have ever seen on the show; - not totally impressed with Casey's solo (she said he should have "turned it on" sooner than this week's elimination); - wants to see Valerie show more individually now that she won't have Ricky (I would agree with that even though I am a Valerie fan) Those were just snippets, there was a lot more... I have to say I always admired Mandy's choreography but I really like her now after listening to that conversation.
  15. I hadn't heard what style they were doing... If he does get hip hop then he should shine. But I wasn't sure if it's been settled as to what style(s) they are doing?
