  1. I've called Amanda "pageant-y" before and I still think that's why she may have struggled in this dance, she wasn't being "pretty." It makes sense when her background is The Rockettes, but I feel like she only really portrays this traditional, kick-line, USO Show, golden age musical, baton twirling, smiling vibe in her dances, and there's disconnect when the dance is asking for her to find another gear. (I feel like this quality I might usually find annoying, but for some reason in Amanda I like her anyway, and I'm curious if she's able to find that gear. I don't know if it comes off on the show, but her and Alan have a fun vibe on social media, and I like the partnership.) Though that makeup did her no favors this week, hard to have a sexy Argentine tango with those weird prosthetics on. I do think the final four is kinda hard to predict at this point, as no one is truly terrible. I think my personal final would consist of: JoJo Iman Jimmie Amanda Though I could easily swap Amanda for Suni, and I wouldn't hate it if Melora got in there, she's just slightly less interesting to me. I know there'll be uproar if Olivia manages to hang on in there, but I don't really care enough to be annoyed by her. There's only two finals outcomes I think that would really annoy me, and that's If it's Jojo (I think she's a lock) and then three guys, over a more talented woman. I think there's a legitimate preference argument you can make between people who like to watch non-dancers "grow" over people who have training coming in (and vice versa) but I think it's interesting that the people who are allowed to be "not perfect but with personality" tend to be men, and the people who tend to get the critique "their dancing is great I just don't connect to their personality" tends to be women. And I like Jimmy, Iman, and Mike (as the three who get this "personality" compliment) but as a trend, it's worth unpacking. And I'll be annoyed if all three of them end up in the finals. Two of 'em, yes, three of them, too much. If Cody sneaks his way in by having a too rabid fanbase. And I like Cody! I've taken his spin classes and they are good, but he's not living up to the dance quality for me, and the exposure I've gotten to his fans just casually in comment sections makes me start to feel some sort of Bobby Bones way about him. But I can't tell how big of a group they are, or if they are just vocal, so I don't know if they can take him into the final.
  2. It took me a second, but I got the Cynthia doll from Rugrats
  3. I don’t know how you give Melora an 8 when you gave Cody all 9s. I felt like she seemed like she lost a little bit of energy towards the end but it was waaaay better than Cody.
  4. Cody’s dance was better but there’s still something odd to me about his posture - like he needs to bring his shoulders down. Is Cheryl just not catching it? I feel like he’d be better served by a different partner, I haven’t been super impressed with her choreography this season. I also don’t know that I’d want my partner to dedicate an American Psycho themed dance to me. “Thanks babe, how about you save it for the next one though, yeah?”
  5. Hasn’t there already been a dance to this song? Derek & Bindi maybe?
  6. I feel like eliminations from here on out are going to get unpredictable. No one left is terrible terrible, and if the ratings are as low as I’ve heard, if someone’s fans don’t show up one week it could be easy for things to swing against them. I’d personally like to see Cody go next, even with all the COVID drama I keep forgetting he’s still there. But I don’t think that will happen because his fans seem super wacky and determined. (I think I might like him better if his #boocrew spinning fanatics didn’t seem so cringy.) Then you’ve got Mike, Jimmie and Iman - all not the greatest dancers but fairly charismatic performers with pros who are good at choreographing around their weaknesses. All finals bait on this show. Amanda, Suni, and Olivia are all good dancers with unclear fanbases. Jojo seems pretty predictably in the finals but could end up in a shocking elimination? Hard to tell if her fans vote either. (Judges would probably save her though.) Kenya seems like a likely next out because she’s been in the bottom twice, but she had a good week this week. ETA: oh shoot, I forgot Melora. She’s also great, I kind of put her with Amanda in the good dancer with a likable pro category - a little better at emoting a character for TV. But I have no sense how that’s translating to votes.
  7. Honestly, same, I felt like it was the right call. Mel deserved better, I felt bad for her when she was having her “vulnerable moment” and Gleb just stared at her because he has the emotional depth of a teaspoon. Val and Olivia’s dances have been more entertaining on the merits.
  8. Tyra changing into Sandy’s makeover outfit the moment Mel C is supposed to portray Sandy’s makeover moment is giving me the same energy as Alexis wearing a white ball gown to a wedding.
  9. They probably could but I’d bet money that Cheryl is insisting she’s fine and can do it. So short of a doctors order declaring she needs to sit out, I don’t know that you could force her to rest.
  10. 100%, she seems like she is still sick just full of b12 shots and coffee. Yep, I mean it’s still somewhat crazy to me that they’re still in. https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/cheryl-burke-dwts-return-covid-134257443.html “And Burke, 37, said she experienced somewhat of an out-of-body experience: "Like, my brain and my body not connecting like I had on Sunday. It was as if there was a pillow on my face as I was jiving." "Look, I can always do a dance once but to have to repeat it, which we have to do it. The cameras have to know what we're doing," she added, "but I definitely felt that it … it wasn't stamina as much as it was like, 'Whoa, like, I can barely breathe.' My lungs felt like they were going to collapse."”
  11. Though, all this could be moot because the whole crew could strike next Monday: https://variety.com/2021/film/news/iatse-strike-hollywood-amptp-deadline-1235088377/amp/ Makes more sense why several people gave crew appreciation shoutouts throughout the show.
  12. For me it’s that the story matches the dance. So it’s like, Jimmie talked about his family and that was cute but then danced to a Britney song about being sexy in the club, so instead of telling one cohesive story they’re telling two disjointed ones. It doesn’t have to be a “sob story” or even completely literal, it could be like, an Amanda dance where she’s like, “I had a really hard year but then I found the joy in having my family and friends support me,” and the we’d have a dance that was explicitly joyful and celebratory, that kind of matches the emotions of the story. Theres just a lot of these that feel like they don’t match, and when you’ve got like what, 2 minutes of screen time between the package and the dance, it just feels like bad storytelling. I don’t know, maybe part of it is just that because of COVID restrictions we’re also getting less candid moments between the partners because they’re not really filming rehearsals, so it’s harder for their personalities to come through.
  13. I don’t know, I wouldn’t say Kenya really got to “tell her story” so much as she got to state one fact about herself. I mean, it’s not like MMY was always great, but I find the weird themes rammed in there make it harder to get to know them at all. Now we seem to just get the barest minimum facts about them as wooden awkward delivery on lines like, “My wife and children are my greatest inspirations, and that’s why Britney Spears always says, you better Work Bitch.” Or as lead ins to straight up commercials, “I have a child, and THATS why I want to tell YOU about the latest roller coaster at Disney California Adventures. (Tickets on sale now, subject to availability, terms and conditions apply, get your tickets at Disney.com)” I wouldn’t mind no MMY if maybe the themes seemed like they had a little more flexibility, could be open to a little more interpretation. Though I have heard they have taken a lot of the autonomy away from the pros on driving some of those creative decisions, which is disappointing.
  14. It seemed to me like he sort of mashed up Remember Me and Poco Loco Remember Me is a weird “villain song” because while it’s related to the villain the whole point of the movie is that you’re not supposed to know why or how. In a way that you can’t explain without ruining the movie. (Also everyone go watch Coco, it’s one of my favorite movies full stop of the last few years and will make you cry your face off.)
  15. I miss Most Memorable Year actually, I feel like it helps get to know the contestants better. Like Kenya is someone I wasn’t familiar with at all and I’m finding it hard to care about her, but we’ve gotten hints that she’s got an interesting story, with her daughter and all. I’d rather learn more about them than “celebrate Grease.” Also I’m a sap and want to see Amanda dance to “What They’ll Say About Us” by Finneas because he wrote it for her.
  16. “Each of our judges gets to vote to save one couple. As head judge, Len will vote last and his vote counts as two votes, so if the other three are not in agreement his vote will decide who stays. Who do you vote to save Bruno? Okay that’s 1 vote for Matt. How about you Derek? Okay we’re at 1 vote Matt, 1 vote Kenya. Carrie Anne? You vote to save Matt, we’re at 2 votes Matt, 1 vote Kenya. Now it’s down to you Len, remember audience, Len’s vote counts as two votes. Len votes for Kenya, and with 3 votes Kenya, 2 votes Matt, that means Kenya will stay and Matt you must leave the tribal council.” JUST GIVE THE RUNNING TALLY, SHOW, you’d make it so much simpler, Jeff Probst has been doing it for like, 50 seasons of Survivor.
  17. Yeah, Carrie Anne apparently leaked the schedule for the rest of the season, and I can’t say I’m super excited for the themes: Plain text version if you don’t want to read the photo sideways: I shudder to think what “Fashion TBD” is and can only picture a horrible Americas Next Top Model challenge. They have to dance on an invisible underwater catwalk while pendulums swing back and forth across the ballroom! If they stick to this it’s 2 more double eliminations towards the end of the season.
  18. Yeah I don't know why they don’t just say “Len’s vote counts as 2 votes” it would make things simpler. I know that there was a lot of concern when she was cast that she’d be “playing for sympathy” the whole season, but I actually think her problem is the opposite, she’s so trained into this cheerful, “Rockette” vibe that her dances seem a little surface level, pagenty. A little too precious/perfect. I’d like to see her get grounded into her emotions a little more, like, get a little…grittier? It doesn’t have to be in a dance about her husband, it can be a different emotion, but I hope she can dig a bit deeper, because I like her in general and Alan is becoming one of my favorite pros.
  19. “Suni, you’re coming out of your shell. Why?” Haha, rude.
  20. This is the thing that annoys me the most about “the Tyra outfits.” She acts like they’re haute couture but they look like someone dragged them out of a bargain bin at a Spirit Halloween. The show does a decent job on most everyone else’s costumes so you have to wonder if they hate her.
  21. Evidence! Watching her acting like she is the star of the show is enough for me. Yeah, you can also look up the experiences of literally anyone who worked with her on ANTM https://www.vox.com/platform/amp/2020/5/8/21249408/tyra-banks-antm-backlash
  22. As far as I can tell, the show doesn’t either, and everyone gets scored 1 of 3 scores: “I didn’t like it”, “it was okay”, and “I liked it!” The number values of those scores creeps slowly upwards over the course of the season, so they start out on a 5-7 range, very quickly move to 6-8, then 7-9, then 8-10. This does leave them room in the middle of the season to -1 or +1 out of their current general 3 score range to add “I really hated it 😡” and “I LOVED IT🤩” Scoring on this show is definitely not any deeper than that.
