Oh, what are they going to do with Mat and the Horn then? That's an epic scene at Falme. I would think they'd want that in there still.

Beyond that 1 scene, I'm happy for the horn to be entirely absent.

Given that we need massive MASSIVE cuts to reduce a 460 hour audiobook into a 48 day series, I'm happy to loose that one scene as well.
There must be other ways to bring Faile and Birgitte into the story.

Strong suspicion that most of books 2 & 3 will be combined into Season 2 as well - so 50 hour audiobook into 8 hour series

Yes. A leaf. The Portal Stones you have to channel. That seems an odd change. Then again, I suppose viewers would call bull that people wouldn't just be using them all the time. It might be hard to translate how foreboding they are.

Or it would be hilarious if next week, Loial is like, 'How come you just didn't use the leaf?'

For now I'll assume they're not going to bother with the portal stones - even though I thought I saw 1 or two in the previous couple of episodes

I don't remember that you have to channel to open the Ways. I thought there was some mechanism that anyone could use it.

It's a change - for reasons not yet disclosed.

In the books, you move an avendesora leaf to a different place; and the gate can be locked by moving that leaf to the inside of the gate (IIRC - may be just removed completely).

As with most changes I can't see the reason before, I'm hanging fire before deciding on whether it's a good, bad or neutral change.

Exactly, which is why I struggled with it. They don't seem like an organization anyone would look up to, and their behavior explains why so many people distrust them. How are they different than White Cloaks?

So you're struggling with it being TOO realistic?

You know that people generally don't trust them; but find the explanation to be too good, that you find it hard to swallow?

So by Googling I found a recap of the ep that stated the AV man in purgatory said Laura's earworm was Schweiger's Requiem of Baldr. It also stated in Norse mythology Baldr is one of Odin's sons. The song seemed to be playing in ep 3 when tiny Laura was listening outside the woman's room her dad was cavorting with. She said strange choice of music, or something like that.

So why can't I find any versions of the song to listen to?

  7. Yep, think of Mat like an addict. Who's just gnenthrough cold turkey. A minute ago.

The worry isn't that he's going to stab you in the back, or run away; but that he'll relapse.

As for recasting - yes, it happens plenty of times in TV. But I can't think of one where it happened mid-season.

We dont know when Mat1 left the show, not do we know when Mat2 was hired. We just (think we) know that Mat1 never returned to film the last 2 episodes, and that Mat2 wasn't there yet.

Changing just the last scene, and using existing shots of Mat1 was presumably the least intrusive option, ret-conning him out earlier would have required more work, and possibly pushed production far enough back to miss the Christmas release window. Simply replacing him would still have required a lot of re-shoots, AND require recasting on the hop. I'd suggest it's better to sacrifice 1 awkward scene then write around it with the right actor, than have a different awkward scene, and spend the next 5-6 seasons with the wrong actor.

But,  they've convinced me Moiraine and Siuan love each other, so I don't really want to see them with anyone else. Though I could be on board for the quad. I'm sure they could convince me of that as well.

If they decompress the time line, so that each season is a good year or so, then I'd have no problem with Siuan pairing up again. It would need to be handled more sensitively than in the books though - but so does pretty much ever interaction between the genders, romatic or otherwise.

We'd be talking about a time a few years after Moiraine "dies" after all. We don't expect widows to be forever celibate in the real world after all.

I'm kind of missing the Flame ... we've seen the dragon's fang several times, but I expected to at least see the Flame above the Seat. Are they not going to keep the yin-yang for the seals?

We saw the yin-yang on Siuan's burned home in this episode - though I expected to see it, or just the flame, in the hall of the tower (possible I just missed it, I've only seen it the once, whilst tired from a long day)

I wonder why they decided horses can't go through the Ways? Why did they decide to open them with the power instead of the leaf? WTF  with thinking the Dark One is at tEotW??

"Never work with children or animals" - and I suspect that goes double for indoor sets and green screens.

No idea - it's a change I instinctively dislike, but trust there's a reason for it; it may just take a while for that reason to become apparent. Equally, given that change - why do they need Loial in their fellowship?

TBF, there are plenty of times in the book where a forsaken gave the impression of being the Dark One in dreams. The question is what happened to Siuan's wards that she was able to be sent a dream? and why would she trust information gained through a dream, seemingly absent any corroborating evidence.

How did nobody notice that Mat stayed behind on an open field? Does nobody of these people have peripheral vision? Also what was he thinking? I sincerely hope next episode he comes jumping through the closing portal. I'm so annoyed with constantly splitting the party because characters are dumb.

    Non-book spoilers

    Spoiler

It's thought that Mat's actor left the show during the COVID hiatus, and didn't come back for filming the final 2 episodes, so they had to ret-con him out of the party at this point.

There's only so much can be done about that (though I'd have thought leaving him in Tar Valon to recuperate might have been more sensible - it probably depended on what footage they had, and minimising re-shoots)

I don't think those were fingernail scratches.  They looked like scars - from self-flagellation or whippings.  I think we were meant to notice them, so I
    don't think it's sex-related.

Pretty sure it's whipping marks, probably from an abusive father figure (or possibly a dominatrix).
Scars were largely side to side, not up over the shoulder, and not wrapping around the sides; so given by someone else.

  12. I don't know how true this is, but I'd heard that WoT was originally going to be 10 episodes, and was written and shot for that; but that Amazon cut that down to 8 quite late in the day.

Leaving the 2R was supposed to be the end of the 2nd episode. So not a 2 hour first episode, but 2 1Hr episodes. Personally, I think it shows, and explains a lot of the clunkiness in E02 - especially being a late change, that would leave a LOT of stuff on the cutting room floor, and work-arounds needed for virtually every scene.

  13. It's excellent, but I'm not sure it's that under-rated, makes regular appearance in "top 20 Christmas films" type lists. But I guess it may be better known in the UK than US?

  14. Is he seeing this as his chance at redemption? In which case, expect him to slip back for film 4 and be unworkwithable for 5.

Or does he have a huge Potter geek child? In which case, the power of hero-dad could be his salvation.

Tom Hooper means there will be all sorts of strange angles, jerky editing, and close ups.  That was fine for a hyper "real" production like John Adams or Les Miserables, but I'm not sure if that works here.

As long as he shows better judgment than asking Russel Crowe to sing

I bet Min would be the one to go. I tend to think you absolutely need the others.

I don't think you can get rid of any of them; but none of the three really need to be introduced in the first season (though Min & Elayne ought to be).

Elayne is needed more for Egwene's storyline; so she could drop out of the love-quadrangle very easily; leaving it for Min and Aviendha - which would be fine, and could work if shown as indecision and cheating on each of them; but nothing will work in terms of them all getting together and just accepting it. It didn't in the books, and I can't see a way of that working out okay on the show.

  18. Q&A with the showrunner, after the show had been picked up, but shortly before being green lit

    http://thewertzone.blogspot.com/2018/09/wheel-of-time-tv-showrunner-hosts-q.html

    Main take-aways:

    Quote

The books will not be mapped 1:1 to the TV show seasons. This sounds like the approach taken by The Expanse (which took all of Season 1 and then 4 episodes from Season 2 to adapt Book 1, then 8 episodes of Season 2 and 5 from Season 3 to adapt Book 2 etc) and the new His Dark Materials show (which will adapt 3 books across 5 seasons).
Episodes will be 1 hour long each.
There'll be more than 5, but definitely less than 14, seasons in total.
Amazon hasn't greenlit the project yet but there's been positive sounds in the last few months (which is why he's been allowed to do the Q&A).
New Spring may be adapted as well, possibly as a special of some kind once the series is fully underway (could be a good way of keeping Moiraine and Lan's actors interested when they're not doing much in the main series).
The TV show will be a faithful adaptation of the books, but will of course have to condense some characters, storylines. Apparently the "latter middle" section of the series may be compressed a bit more (i.e. PoD through CoT, surprising nobody). Judkins notes himself as a Lady Stoneheart fan (from Game of Thrones) and was sorry to see her cut from the TV show, but these things are sometimes necessary.
He wants to cast Rand and the Aiel as "tall gingers" if possible.
On LGTBQ+ representati on, there'll be "pillow friends out of the wazoo."
How channelling will be ha ndled is still being discussed, but Judkins liked how the magic was done in Doctor Strange and Avengers: Infinity War, which may serve as a template.
Trollocs and other Shadowspawn may be a combination of CGI and prosthetics, but he feels that prosthetics is better for both actor and viewer immersion.
Billy Zane will not be reprising his role of Ishamael from the Red Eagle informercial.
Judkins is aiming for the quality level o f the LotR movies or GoT, definitely not Shannara.
Brandon Sanderson, Harriet and the rest of Team Jordan will advise on the show's development, some more than others (I suspect Brandon will be busy with his own books to do a huge amount, though).
Confirmed characters: Rand, Egwene, Cenn Buie (if less than in the book), Logain (in an expanded role), Tam, Bela, Padan Fain (who'll be less obviously a villain), Faile, Mat. His favourite Forsaken are Graendal and Moghedien, so it sounds like they'll be in as well.
Unconfirmed characters: Aviendha, Min, Elayne. Judkins notes that the four-way relationship from the books isn't really viable for the show and will be changed. He refused to confirm if this means that some of these characters will be merged or cut. I suspect this is the most controversial take-away from the Q&A. My guess is that the characters will still be in the show and Rand may be sequential relationships with them, but won't be in a polygamous relationship with all of them at once.
His favourite character is Egwene and his favourite scene is Dumai's Wells. His least favourite character is Faile, but promises she'll be awesome on the show. In terms of tough scene s to write, Tel'aran'rhiod is proving problematic (mainly as they won't know how it's going to be depicted until the vfx department comes on board).
There'll be less braid-tugging and dress-smoothing than in the books. There will be one braid-tug in the first episode thoug h.
No decision yet on filming locations. He hopes the budget will be large enough so they can visit the most appropriate lo cations around the world.
