  1. Do you know how many calories you need every day to not lose weight? 3500 for a big, man, active all day out in the cold. Do you know how many calories are in a lb of mushrooms? ONE lousy hundred calories. it costs more calories to gather most plant foods than you get back! Doig so is a waste of time, other than for cambium and berries. You can always burn the wood after you strip off the bark, ya know.
  2. Once the temps are consistently sub freezing, I can build a rock solid, air-tight 10x6x6 ft quonset hut in one day, with just debris, the 20x20 tarp and ice . The next day, I can cut the entrance hole, provide the light "windows, made of 1" thick ice, make the right-angled crawlway entrance, get the firewood out of the shelter, melt-loose the 20x20 tarp from the ceiling/walls, make the woven withe, debris and ice door, with a handle on each side, finish stuffing the hut with debris, dig the 8 pits needed for hot rocks in the floor, and fill those pits with wood ashes. Until temps ARE sub freezing in the afternoon, all you need is a pile of debris inside of the tent made out of the 20x20 tarp. Dont waste more than the half day needed to make the pole tent and debris pile, in that first month. You need to be FISHING and peeling, dicing, boiling and frying cambium, not wasting weeks on building shelters and hauling/processing firewood. The ice/debris shelter needs no heat source, other than your body heat, down to -20F, as long as you have fat to metabolize and keep on your 6 layers of clothing, with dry, soft debris between each layer of clothing.
  3. you can make a pontoon outrigger raft in one day, use a 5 ft long handle in the shovel to make a paddle. That will suffice to move your stuff. Another day tho, lets you make a raised platform to keep you and your stuff dry, make oars, oarlocks and tripods that mount the oarlocks. and then use the raft to deploy and check the 2000 sq ft of netting that you can make out of the cotton rope hammock
  4. you can start a fire by fire rolling a strip of your shemagh. Then bury your coals in the ashes to keep the fire "alive" for 12 plus hours, youll only need to start ONE fire from scratch. Once you have one fire, you can have charred punkwood and ashed tinder, which let you start fires easily, with just a shard, sharp rock and the carbon steel blade of your multitools knife. You can make a big pump drill, which always give you friction fire, and does so easily. so the ferrorod is a completely wasted pick, IF you know anything. When you know to take the tarp and the duct tape, it's very easy to make dry bags for food storage, or for storing tinder and fire making tools, pine resin, birch or cedar bark, tinder fungus, fatwood. The duct tape easily ignites, too, if you make little "nest" out of narrow strips of tape. A small roll of tape will ignite a small pile of damp sticks, too
  5. If fowler had actually known anything, he'd not have needed to climb that hill much and could have left a strand of rope from the hammock there to help him if he did. All he had to do was make a 6 ft long handle for the cold steel shovel, go about 15 ft up the hill, to allow for the lake flooding when it froze up, fall rains, etc, and made an 8x15 ft ledge on the hillside. Drive some stakes, put logs across those stakes, forming a "retaining wall'. Then dig out the high part of the hill and pack it into the crevice formed by the hill and the retaining wall. When you can make 2000 sq ft of netting out of the cotton rope hammock, you dont have to continually be out there, re-baiting your 24 trotlines. Also, if you can use live bait, you make little tarp and tape bait bags, with a treble hook barely protruding from the little hole that lets the smell and taste of the fish-guts bait escape from the bag. Then the minnows can't nibble away your bait. Roland is a fool and an A-hole. you cannot heat boulders with your little fireplace. You MUST leave ventoles in your shelter if you have a fire inside of it, cause it'll smoke you to death if you dont. So you lose almost all of your heat up the chimney and out of your vent holes. You want building materials that don't suck the heat out of the air in your shelter and you dont want to exhaust and starve yourself for 2 weeks while you build your shelter, either. WTH goes big game hunting with just one broadhead arrow? He was so weakened by his shelter-building that he couldn't make a proper stalk on the ox. So he shot it in the butt and let it SUFFER for FIVE HOURS rather than trot 10 minutes back to camp for more arrows, or make a spear out of a pole and his knife, using his boot laces to lash the knife on and to make a bola, using 3 rocks. Entangle the ox's legs with the bola and then stab it in the neck and rip out its throat and jugular vein. Then the animal only suffers for 10 minutes or less.
  6. more bs. He was starving. You can't waste more of that precious, warm first month upon making more of a shelter than a tarp tent during the first month. That takes a couple of hours and getting the needed debris pile takes a couple more hours. You dont set up the shelter where you dont have lots of debris, folks. You put the 12 ft long ridgepole in the fork of a tree, or tie it to a limb. If you can't notch a tree to hold the other end of the ridgepole, make a tripod to hold it. You dont want a 6" OD, 50 lb ridgepole to fall on your head in a storm, either. What you do is cut a couple of 2" OD at the base, 8 ft tall saplings, lash their small ends together, overlapping them by 2 ft each. then your ridgepole is easily found/cut and weighs 15 lbs. THAT can fall on you and not ruin you. Once you've passed a month and temps are consistently sub-freezing, you can make a 10x6x6 ft quonet hut in one day, out of debris and ice. no kidding, like being a 230 lb man vs a 140 lb woman, which was the only way fowler beat Carleigh on season 3
  7. Fowler was a fool. It took him a week to make that "fishing dock" and then it got flooded. In 2 days, you can make a pontoon outrigger raft and oars, oarlocks and use it to fish all over the lake, with the 2000 sq ft of netting you can make out of the cotton rope hammock He was a fool to waste a month building that nearly-worthless shelter, cut the steps into the hillside, harvest all of that firewood, all of that could have been avoided. Cut a level spot into the hillside about 15 ft above the level of the lake, cause it's going to flood when it freezes. You only need about 8x15 ft of camp space. Drive some stakes, put logs against them, forming a retaining wall. Make a 5 ft long handle for the Cold steel shovel and you can have such a level spot in one day. You dont need a warming fire if you know to make a proper debris/ice shelter in a day. So there's little need of climbing the hill eh? when you set out 2000 sq ft of netting, used intelligently, with a pontoon raft, you'll catch a LOT more fish, with much less effort, than with 24 trotlines set along the shoreline, without having to be out in the cold much. So you see, he failed miserably. He won only cause he out-weighed Carleigh by 90 lbs. See, folks, when you know to take the Trifecta bivy from 2GoSystems and also take the reflective 12x12 tarp and the big roll of duct tape, you can make a set of water-proof clothing out of the tarp and have a lot of tarp- material left over for other things, like a dry bag for your tinder, and food storage bags.. By having an extra 2 layers of clothing, with debris stuffed under those layers, you can make pontoons for the raft, out of 2 sets of clothing, the backpack and the life vest. EACH of the 6 pontoons will float a man. So it doesn't MATTER if any of the 8 small logs, out of which you make a raft FRAMEWORK, floats or not. You can make the oars, oarlocks, tripods for mounting the oarlocks in one day, and make the rest of the raft in one other day. almost all of it can be made by firelight, at your camp. too. Dont waste precious daylight on stuff you can do by fire-light.
  8. other than to provide you with the mandated 1 bowel-movement per week, that stuff costs you more calories to forage than they give back. Goggle how many calories plant foods offer per lb. it's disgusting. Mushrooms offer 100 lousy calories per lb. You need 3500 calories per day to be active out in the cold wind all day. Who can eat 35 lbs of mushrooms? If you ate enough plant foods to not lose weight, you'd crap yourself to death from taking in all of that fiber.
  9. if you know to bring the big roll of duct tape, it's very easy to create 2-fletch arrows. Those suffice for bowfishing and taking rabbits to at least 20ft, maybe 10m. You can fire harden a bow stave in 24 hours and have maybe a 40 lb draw bow. You can make a finger tab out of layers of the tarp and your many layers of clothing form an arm-guard. They wont let you take barbed hooks, use bait or take a rod and reel cause those items make it too easy for you to feed yourself adequately. Every day that they are out there costs them like 100k, due to the support crew and the liability insurance. So the producers want the challenge to END as soon as they get enough video for a dozen half-assed shows. None of them has known what to take or do. to have a good shelter OR feed themselves. In 2 days, you can have a shelter that needs no warming fire down to -20F, IF you have brains enough to leave on your 6 layers of clothing and have debris stuffed between each layer, and stuff that shelter with debris. The bottom 1 ft thickness of your bedding-debris can be brush, but the top 2 ft layer and the debris around and above you needs to be small, soft debris, for the needed insulation-effect and the shelter needs to be rock-solid and air-tight. You can build such a shelter very easily out of ice/debris, if you know how and do so in 2 days. The tarp/tent suffices for the first 3-4 weeks, if you have a big pile of debris inside of it.
  10. the deer is at MOST 50,000 calories. A smallish porcupine has more food value, since deer have no fat and a 20 lb porkie is half fat. So that porkie is 35,000 calories and you can mix it with 30,000 calories of diced, boiled and fried cambium. You have to mix cambium with fatty food or it wont move thru your guts. Deer only have fat in their blood, brain and the marrow of their bones. When you kill one with a bow, you probably lose most of that blood and he wasted the brain on tanning the hide. Wth are you going to do with a deer hide, anyway, in freezing conditions and you've got plenty of warm clothing, a rock-solid, air-tight debris/ice quonset-hut, with lots of debris as insulation. deer vension only offers 600 calories per lb less than half of a deer's live weight is edible carcass. You need 3500 calories per day to be active in the cold wind so the deer is just 2 weeks of food. You can gain 3 weeks simply by having a shelter that you make and stuff with debris in 2 days, which needs no warming fire. Netting is like traps. You need a LOT of it and you need to know how to use it effectively and you need a stable watercraft with which you can deploy the netting and check it several times per day, removing the caught fish. The 50 sq ft of netting that they let you take is a JOKE. The 2000 sq ft of netting that you can make out of the cotton rope hammock is virtually a sure win. Fully HALF of your '5 sq miles" of area is on the LAKE. your camps' smoke is going to keep big animals at least half a mile away from your camp. so you really only get to hunt 1.5 sq miles of land and you have to walk pretty far to be in potential hunting land. Chilko lake wont let you take predators nor musk ox, moose nor caribou. You can't snare big game by the foot to drag logs, either. So I'd not bother to take the bow nor the snarewire to Chilko and maybe not to Great slave lake, either. the odds are very much against your getting a decent shot at a big animal. Roland got lucky with a butt hit, jordan MISSED an entire moose, so his hit was LUCK. If you take a bow, better take a wooden self bow, so you can scrape down the limbs as you weaken, making it easier to draw the bow. In a month, if you've not been getting other food, you wont be able to properly use a bow that's a 50 lb draw and maybe not 40 lbs. Below a 40 lb draw weight, your arrow probably wont exit a deer, and that means a small blood trail. If the wounded critter gets off of your little allotment of land, you're not allowed to retrieve it. Best to focus on catching 400 lbs of fish, 130,000 calories and mixing it with 60,000 calories of cambium. Along with the 10,000 calories of rations and 10,000 calories of cambium that you can mix with the cambium, you'll have 210, 000 calories. That's enough to feed you adequately for 70 days, if you mostly stay holed up in the debris-pile . So you'd lose only 10 lbs in an 80 day stay. Every 100 lbs less fish you catch is another 10 lbs of bodyfat that you'll need in order to win.
  11. I deer has almost no fat. There's fat in the blood, brain and marrow, and that's about it. A 130 lb deer is less than 50,000 calories. A big porcupine can be a LOT more food for you, since it can be 35 lbs and 50% calories. High fat foods like porcupine can be mixed 50/50 with diced, boiled and fried cambium, which offers 600 calories per lb. Fat has twice as many calories as protein or carbs. So a porky can be 50,000 calories and you can mix in another 50,000 calories of cambium. So even a smaller porcupine is worth more to you than a big deer, if you know anything With a debris/ice, solid as a rock, air tight shelter, made in 2 days, you can be completely safe from animals, and save 3 weeks of time and calories. with those 3 weeks, you can make the pontoon outrigger raft, the 2000 sq ft of netting, the treblehook trotlines and do a lot of fishing. So they are just ignorant and inept. The food IS present, you just have to know how to get it. You can mix 10 lbs of cambium with 40 lbs of live weight fish, for a total of 18,000 calories. You can bring 10,000 calories of pemmican and chocolate and mix it with 10,000 calories of diced, boiled, and fried cambium. 40 lbs of fish is not much to catch in 40 days of using the raft to troll a dozen treblehook trotlines . So this gets you thru to day 45, staying mostly holed up in the debris pile, and lose at most 30 lbs of body weight. After you can use all of that much netting, you should not lose any more weight. Any 130lb woman or 180 lb man can stand to lose 30 lbs.
  12. each of them can gain 3 weeks, simply by knowing to use the tent, made out of the 20x20 tarp, for the first 3-4 weeks, with a big pile of debris inside of it, then make a 10x6x6 ft quonset hut out of debris and ice. Pile up your firewood, brush, and debris. Cover it with the 20x20 tarp, cover the tarp with 2" of small debris, sprinkle water on it, let it freeze, repeat at least twice, using more water each time, since the underlying layer will not let water run off as easily as the tarp does. Test the structure by jumping up and down on it. Cut an 18" ID hole in the downwind end of the structure, remove the brush and firewood, leave the debris as your bedding. Make a woven withe and ice door, with a handle on each side, Plug the leaks around it with loose earth and dry grasses. Heat 4 head-sized rocks red hot. Move the debris away from the entrance, and move the rocks inside. Use the rocks to re-heat the shovel blade. Use the hot shovel to melt loose the tarp from the ceiling and walls When you first launch, fold the 10x10 tarp in half, stuff it with debris, tie the edges and pull it over you like a blanket. That and the debris pile is all you need inside of your tent when inside of the reflective bivy, wearing all 6 layers of your clothing and debris between each layer of clothing. Fold the 20x20 tarp 3x, stuff the folds with debris, pull it over you like the 10x10. Because the quonset is air-tight, you'll be up on a compressed, 3 ft thick layer of debris, up where the body-warmed air is trapped. The denser, cold air will be displaced into the bottom 2 ft of the shelter, where you are not. You wont need a fire in either shelter. This saves you a week of shelter/fireplace building and 2 hours and 700 calories per day that every else wastes on hauling and processing firewood. This shelter doesnt need an external heat source down to -20F, for as long as you have body-fat to metabolize. For your last 2 weeks, you can use rocks in pits in the floor, under your sleeping-debris. Heat them in half an hour outside of the shelter, and then bury them in 2" thick layers of wood ashes in the pits. Then they'll warm you for 4-5 hours. Repeat as needed. This will only be necessary for your last 2 weeks. This is how you dont need a sleeping bag, just the more-useful bivy, which can be work as a poncho. Make a right angled crawlway entrance, like a igloo has. Make a couple of pinkie-sized holes in the end wall, next to the door. Locate one about 12" off of the ground, to allow for a heavy snow's not blocking it. Locate the second vent-hole 2 ft above the first one. When you're in no danger of falling asleep, plug these holes with greased (fish oil) tapered wooden sticks. When you're awake, you'll notice the air's getting "stuffy". 4 more holes can be located in the corners of the floor, near the door end of the shelter. Remove the debris from a 3-4 ft wide strip across the end of the shelter, and toss it up where you normally sleep. Put the hot rocks in those holes, in ashes, so you can lay, sit, kneel, stand to work on whatever you need to work on and have a head sized hot rock on all sides of you. . Put tapered 2" wide, foot long wooden plugs on the ceiling near your work-end as you build layers of ice/debris around them. Make 1" thick, 2" OD, greased, tapered hunks of ice for those holes, so you'll have light inside of your quonset hut. You are given a light for the camera and a headlamp and batteries for same. You can have all of these advantages in 2 days of work. You'll save almost 50,000 calories with the tent shelter and this quonset hut, letting you stay 3 weeks longer than would be possible with a log cabin and fire-place. You'll save 3 weeks of time, too, letting you make the pontoon outrigger raft out of 2 sets of clothing, the backpack, all stuffed with debris, whip-stitched and taped. Waterproof-spray them while still at home. The 6th pontoon is the life vest. Make a tarp/tape/debris set of water wings for yourself. The same can be used to make an anorak with hood, leggings, shorts, mittens, booties and another pair of pants. Then you'll also use the bivy as a poncho, with debris between both layers. Make the booties and wool socks big enough to let you wear all 6 pairs at once, with debris between each layer. Any time you wont be walking, like on the raft, swap out your normal footwear for the socks and booties. Any time you'll b standing around, get the booties on and stand on a layer of dry debris. Then you'll have no frozen toes, eh? Never go out on the raft with clothes or boots on and never do so without a fire, hot rocks, coals buried in the ashes, dry clothing right near you on shore. Then when, not if, you get wet, all you have to do is shake off the wet debris and water from the tarp/bivy "clothing", use dry debris to dry yourself off, us the hot rocks and bivy to warm up for a few minutes. Then again don the tarp clothing, the bivy and debris and get back to work. Can't wear the sleeping bag outside folks. This is why you take the reflective tyvek bivy, not the sleeping bag. Every inch of compressed, dry debris is worth 1 R-value of insulation. You'll lose almost no body heat at all, when inside of the quonset, given the 6 layers of clothing, debris between each layer, the air-tight shelter and the 2 ft thick layer of compressed dry debris all around you. You'll be laying on a 3 ft thick layer of same up where the trapped warm air is.. Conserve your calories and you'll need very little food in order to win. Fish have enough fat in them that you can mix 1 lb of diced, boiled, fried cambium with 4 lbs of live weight fish, stretching your food supply by 33% You'll lose at most 1 lb of body weight per day while fasting in the quonset, and not much more inside of the tent, cause it wont be all that cold yet when you're in the tent. You can't risk building the quonset until temps stay below freezing.
  13. People just dont know what to take and do, that's all. They have access to a big lake that proven to be full of big fish. They can make 2000 sq ft of netting out of the rope hammock and make a pontoon outrigger raft in a couple of days, including oars and oarlocks. A day would set them up to troll a dozen treblehook trotlines behind the raft as they row it, using ribbon/streamer lures cut from the reflective 12x12 tarp.
  14. this is mostly incorrect. They need salt and a few minerals, which they CAN take, in the form of a 3 lb block of sea salt, but none of the contestants have ever had brains enough to take it as one of their 10 items. The longest fast on record was 13 months. If Biko had known to hole up in a debris pile, his 280 lbs would have lasted for 130 days. He still weighed 190 lbs when he broke weak.
  15. the show starts in mid-september, and ended in 75 days, so it was over with by 1 December.
