  1. Sad that last night's episode was the last one for the season.  I always enjoy watching the show and them coming on here to discuss it with all of you.

The short closeouts at the end were nice.  Each of them letting down their guard for a bit and admitting that the year wasn't that great for them.

The problem with being a young,  good looking up and comer is that there will always be another good looking young up and comer to replace you.  Just look at the names that Flagg drops that make people say,  "Wow!  I haven't heard that name in ages."

Given time, people will be saying,  "Altman Brothers?  Yes, I remember them.  Weren't they in real estate or something?"

I mean, I'd expect a top-grade Beverly Hills plastic surgeon to do very well for himself. But well enough for himself to own a $50M house and 20 collectible cars? Or some mid-level exec or investment banker to be able to lease an apartment for $80K a month? I buy this as true, it just astonishes me.

We can explain this in two words:  Trust Fund.

All that generational wealth has to end up somewhere.  A good example is Edith Flagg, Josh's grandmother.  Her estate was $100,000,000.   We only know of two grandchildren of Edith Flagg so we can do the math there.  If Josh inherited a chunk of that then he would be able to afford a home for $80K per month.

Here's a cute story told by Ed Potts, grand nephew of Ray Croc (Mcdonald's Ray Croc, whose family fortune grew to over $2.5 billion):

"When I was little, people would say that Uncle Ray would be too busy to attend family events, but I always called him anyway to invite him.  I'm glad I did because when I graduated high school the biggest present came from Uncle Ray."

To put a finer point on it, if you can call people "Uncle Elon, Uncle Donald, or Uncle Jeff (Bezos) then you are looking at a ton of money coming your way.

  3. Funny thing about last nights episode-- In our house, the opinions on Tracy and Josh Flagg flip flopped.

For the last few weeks, we felt sorry for Tracy.  She seemed overwhelmed by everything and has stated in the past that she wished she could spend more time with her daughters.

This week, she seemed to have plenty of time to go on a blind date, and this was after specifying that he had to be rich and in good shape.

We flipped to the better on Flagg.  Of course he is still hard to watch, but his knowledge did shine through on the Oak Knoll property.  Truthfully, if one of my relatives owned Oak Knoll, I would suggest Flagg be the agent.

The four Stacey Petrie shows, i.e. I Am My Brother's Keeper, The Sleeping Brother, Stacey Petrie, Part 1, and Stacey Petrie, Part 2.  (I don't know, maybe I have an aversion to Jerry Van Dyke?)

The Stacey Petrie (Jerry Van Dyke) episodes, the Richard Dawson episode, and a few others, have one thing in common.  It is OBVIOUS that the network (or somebody) is using the episode to showcase an actor who they think is an up and coming star.

I enjoy the series very much, so I forgive a little bump here or there.

  5. An unwatchble episode of The Dick Van Dyke Show?

I noticed an upcoming episode with guest star Richard Dawson.  Specifically recorded it because we love seeing actors back when they were much younger and before they hit it big.

The episode is Racy Tracy Rattigan.

Dawson did a good job of playing an over the top ladies man, and it was fun to see him at such a young age.  But the rest of the episode was awkward.  Morey Amsterdam and Rose Marie were visibly off kilter in their scenes, with a look of "I'm not sure why we're even here."  The whole thing looked like a studio setup to showcase their new discovery, Richard Dawson, who spent a large portion of the episode doing bird calls.

I think the reason it sticks out is because the rest of the series is very solid.  This one, I stopped watching in the middle and deleted it.

Do any of you remember this episode?

And Flagg's statement about the mountain lions was plain ignorant. Just because he's never seen one while he sits in his ivory tower or flies first class to attend Paris fashion week doesn't mean wildlife doesn't exist. I used to get a kick out of him but he's becoming insufferable.

You make a good point here.  This season he actively hates his clients.

When the Trousdale seller was taking him through the property, Josh rolled his eyes when the seller tried to give him some history on the house.  Then Josh spent the next two episodes cheering for the house not to sell.  When they discovered the rat in the pool, Josh wouldn't even ask for somebody to get rid of it before the open house.

On the Roxbury listing, Tracy tried to be ethical by stating,  "The seller needs representation and the buyer needs representation.  Josh will represent one side and I'll represent the other."

Josh simply said, "Here's the offer.  Call them and tell them to take it."

Maybe it's all for the show, but if there is actual money at stake, you'd think his clients would be angry when they see this on TV.

  7. I'll actually stand up for Josh Altman and the others a bit on the workaholic thing.

When  I was first out of college I worked for a high end car dealer.  Because I was young, I didn't do it for the money, I did it because I could drive Lambos and Ferraris across the parking lot to prep them.  That 30 second drive each day was worth it!

I saw how the super rich approach buying big ticket items:

"I'm spending millions of dollars on this house and I want to meet with Josh Altman, not his flunkie.  It's Josh Altman on the website, it's Josh Altman on the advertising, and it's Josh Altman showing me the house or I'm not buying it."

Because the big spenders insist on this, there is only so much delegating that people can do.

I don't think you can fake the delight he takes in his children and there doesn't appear to be any red flags (no pun intended) in terms of how he and Heather interact.

His brother is also in a relatively long term marriage and his parents are still what appears to be happily married.

I agree with you that Altman is truly in love with Heather and that will be his saving grace.  What makes me laugh is how the show treats the workaholic husband and overly tired wife as a brand new thing that has never happened before.

I think they should go over-the-top with it and do a Lucille Ball, Desi Arnez type episode where Heather and Josh trade places for a week so they can see how difficult the other side can be.

Wonderful, the Dubrows make their appearance. We'll see just how fancy Fancy Pants is. 🙄

The preview was pretty funny.  Josh is trying to show Heather Dubrow around the outside of the house and she totally blows him off.

Josh:  Let me show you the tennis court

Dubrow:  Yeah, yeah, yeah.  Tennis court.  I get it.

Josh:  But you need to see the views

Dubrow:  Yeah, yeah.  Trees, I get it.

Poor Josh was kind of surprised and kind of laughing at the same time.  I enjoy it when they loosen up and have fun with the show like that.

I somehow had it n my mind that George died after Sheldon left, and that wss why Georgie was so mad at him. So I’m heartbroken and confused.

This still works.  George passes away and Sheldon leaves for college while Georgie is still helping Mary pick up the pieces.

  10. The kids who grew up watching That 70's Show are popping up now saying,

"Now that I'm an adult, I understand that Red was a good father."

Our local station is rerunning Young Sheldon each evening.

Watching those early episodes, George is portrayed a bit negatively, but you can already see them leaving the breadcrumbs for,

"You know what?  George was actually right in that scene."

But would they have his death be the result of him doing something drastic because he felt pressured by Mary?  Nothing like adding a layer of guilt onto Mary when George dies.

I see where you are going and they might take it a step farther.

Meemaw has often been harsh towards George.  Imagine she insists on George helping her do something such as push her car home when she runs out of gas.  This physical labor causes George's heart attack.

  12. It's amazing how much courage this took back then.  The studio wanted an Asian couple on standby in case the audience rejected the idea of a black family, and Carl insisted they go in with the black couple no matter what

It's disappointing that years later, people with much more money and much more power couldn't be bothered to even try to carry on what Carl Reiner started.

There's a video of Jerry Seinfeld where a fan asks him why with all of Seinfeld's guest stars, not one single black comedian was on the show.  Jerry gets angry and says,  "Why does it matter?  It's not the census!"

Even with all the pressure and all the threats, Carl Reiner and those from the Dick Van Dyke show never said,  "Why does it matter?"

    It just DID.

I didn't notice that, so maybe it WAS Joyce Kim. 😃

Speaking of the other students in the class:

Wouldn't Dr. Sturgis or Dr. Linkletter have pulled Sheldon aside and told him,

"Sheldon, you are the smartest kid in town.  Maybe the smartest kid in Texas.  Be ready because you are going into a program where EVERYBODY is the smartest kid in their hometown.  This may be the first time you're not the number one in the class."

In the 2004 reunion special, Sally & Herman were married!

The character of Herman Glimpsher hits different as we get older.

Younger me enjoyed a good laugh at the very idea of Sally being attracted to him.  He's a momma's boy.  Can't even handle drinking cold milk.  Must be home early.

Older me has a different opinion.

He respects his mother, and is always respectful of Sally.  He is careful with money, but wants to pay his fair share, as shown by his desire to pay for Sally and his dinner.  He would probably be proud of Sally's accomplishments instead of jealous of them.

Not only am I not surprised he and Sally were married in the reunion show, but I don't think Sally "settled" in any way.

Funny how your view changes as you get older.

Gary Burghoff's performance in these two episodes seems a little off. His voice seems different and we don't see any of Radar's mannerisms. I think the actor had already divorced himself from the role and once that was done it was hard for him to get back into character.

Gary was on Matchgame a few times.   The others were good at the small talk, the inside jokes, and the patter.  When Gary tried to participate it seemed so forced.

    I felt sorry for him.

I read the memoirs DVD wrote, and he said he made a decision to only perform family-friendly material, and it's clear that's paid off for him in a big way, because he has become a timeless artist.

What's funny about that is Morey Amsterdam has some standup where he gets off color.  Just enough to catch you by surprise.

I feel like such an idiot-I never knew that Santa in the first and only season’s Christmas episode was played by Otis from The Andy Griffith Show!

Speaking of Christmas, MeTv played "A Very Brady Christmas" yesterday.

Just as delightfully cheesy as you remember it!

MeTV ran Christmas shows this afternoon.

I was watching as well!  The early episodes do a great job of allowing the relationships to grow naturally.  Ritchie discovers that Fonzie will be spending Christmas alone.  Howard doesn't want to get involved and is honest about that.  It's only after some back and forth that Howard invites Fonz to the Cunningham's house.

It was nice to see the characters click in together over time, instead of forcing it.

The Night the Roof Fell In 😄 at the scene where Rob comes in looking  (and dancing) like Fred Astaire completely ignoring Laura looking and acting like a total slob.  Other shows have done this, two people recounting the same scene from their own POV, but no one has done it better!

This show shines in the (few) episodes where Rob and Laura argue.  It's realistic while staying lighthearted.

Do you remember "My Husband is a Check Grabber"?

    Rob:  What did I do?

    Laura:  What you always do.

Rob:  Don't tell me this is one of those arguments where I have to guess what it is!

I want to know where Fluffy, the cat, went.  🐱 I think she was only in the first episode of the wedding/honeymoon.

There were some cute lines in The Brady Bunch Movie that addressed some of this.  Not the cat, but the dog.

"Go get 'em, Tiger!   Hmmm... Tiger?  I wonder what happened to that dog?"

And a funny line about the astroturf instead of grass in the back yard.

All great points. As silly as that sequence is, it’s upsetting to see our beloved TV family shot dead, fake bullets and all.

You remind me of when they did "The Bradys", a more serious reboot of the series.  Seeing Bobby in the hospital was jarring.  Especially since we were accustomed to them having such happy lives.

Way to promote prejudice. Is that the way Americans were in the 60s

That is one side of the show I find a bit disappointing.  Also the chauvinism played for laughs.

An example is when Wally and Beaver went to play at a friend's house and Beaver says,  "There are two sisters, but they beat it when we threw water at them."
