  1. Doctor Who: The whole sequence of The Doctor breaking the wall to get to the Tardis in Season 9: Heaven Sent. Amazingly acted, shot and scored.

Another Hell Yeah! moment was in Season 6: The Wedding of River Song. I wasn't much of a fan of Amy or her story, but I have to give her this one: "The Doctor is very precious to me, you're right. But you know what else he is, Madame Kovarian? Not. Here."

  2. The Matrix wasn't my kind of movie (too many scenes I found gross as a kid), but I considered all three movies to be of the same quality. I was very surprised when I found out that the first was so beloved by critics while the other two were considered subpar. I just couldn't see it. Maybe I will if I ever bother to rewatch.

Let me take a stab. Gaston's mother always wanted education, so she began to work as an assistant to a scientist. Unfortunately, she was killed during an experiment when Gaston was a baby. He was only trying to protect Belle from the same fate! He wasn't even in love with her, he once had his heart broken when a woman he loved was forced to marry someone else and he never believed in love again, only mindless flirting. But he wanted to save Belle from the influence of her scientific father, so he thought of marrying her as a sort of sacrifice. When she was taken by the Beast, he remembered, how his father was years ago killed by a giant bear, only it was dark that day, so people who saw it believed it was some strange beast like nothing they saw before. That was why Gaston was so determined to kill the Beast! I think it is writing itself.

So that video from The Take made me realize that yeah, a lot of the Disney villains are demonized versions of single women seen as a threat to the “family unit”: the evil stepmothers, Cruella, Madame Medusa, Mother Gothel, Ursula…so that made me wonder if any Disney cartoons had single, career oriented, non-matronly female characters who weren’t villains. And to my surprise, I thought of one: Miss Bianca from The Rescuers.

No, think about it. She’s single, wealthy, very fashionable (rocking the fur coat and pillbox hat), very ambitious wanting to get a real mission in the Rescue Aid Society, and had no immediate plans to settle down. But that didn’t make her any less kind and compassionate, not only in wanting to help Penny, but also choosing Bernard to be her partner when he was just the lowly janitor. She’s the antithesis of the film’s villain Madame Medusa, a vain woman who uses and abuses a child just to steal a jewel.

Yes, she and Bernard become an official couple in the sequel, but that doesn’t necessarily mean she’s going to give up her career whether or not they start a family.

Or am I just overthinking this?

You raise a very good point. I think there is still some subtle misogyny in filmmaking regarding independent women.

I think maybe Judy from Zootopia might be another non-villainous example. From human characters I could only think of the cat owner from The Aristocats, who is a retired opera singer. But she's a minor character.

I am confused, if you do not have a doorknob on the outside how to you get in? We unlock the door but you still have to turn the doorknob to enter.

After unlocking, you turn the key a quarter of a turn more in the same direction and that does the same thing as turning the doorknob from the inside. At least with the type of a doorknob that I am familiar with.

Yes, generally if a door is unlocked, it can be opened from either inside or outside.

Wow, I would die of fright! Not only do I lock the door anyway for the night, even with the safe doorknob, I turn the key sideways, so that noone would be able to open the door from the outside, even if they have the key (which only few do).

I don't go wash my hands when I get home, but I do take off my shoes.  I'm probably a bit of an outlier (especially these days!) with the former, but the latter is a fairly even split in my experience.  In some cultures it's traditional to remove shoes (and to expect guests will do the same), but for many people it's purely personal preference/habit and that varies.

I guess so. I know a few people who let guests keep their shoes, but I would never do that. I am a bit of a germaphobe, so I would have to clean like crazy. Me and most people I know have few spare pair of slippers for this reason.

If that's the case I'd be angry about that too.  I don't know the ins and outs of the Jolie-Pitt marriage or break-up but just generally speaking I feel strongly that children, especially teenagers, have a right to be heard when it comes to questions about custody.  Not the final say but certainly to have their feelings taken into consideration.

I'll give you one better and say that I believe that teenagers should definitely have a final say in where they live. It is their life.

  7. I don't get that. Is it an American thing to have the door to your house/apartment able to be open from outside? In Europe we have doors that don't have doorknob from the outside, so you can only open them with a key. This has always bugged me on TV, but I assumed that it is done only for the convenience and that IRL everybody has a normal safe door.

Another thing that similarly bugs me is that people never take their shoes off when they get home and never go wash their hands, but I also assume that it is just because it would pause the story, not that people actually don't do that.

I don't think they have shown hints that Sutton had a problem until these last couple episodes. She always liked to party, but we never showed her seeming to be dependent on it or let it impact her life. Lots of people enjoy drinking without have a dependency. But then in this episode she couldn't even get through the work day sober, which is not a great sign.

To be fair, her husband just left her and it has been like 2 days, so that is not really enough time to see if she will develop a problem. I don't think they have enough time to show an addict storyline.

Personally I thought she drank too much before, like in season 2 when she was going out with that influencer, or even at her wedding she was drinking since morning. But I wasn't sure if the writers intended to address it or not. Now it seems they intended for us to notice, but since there is so little time left I wonder how it will turn out.

Every time anyone in the John Wick movies rips on John for going back in “just for a puppy” it sets my teeth on edge. Like, I get that this is a world of trained assassins that think nothing of killing people, so they wouldn't get that worked up over someone killing a dog. But instead of them going “it was just a dog” what they SHOULD have said was: “What kind of sick fuck stomps on a puppy?! Dude, I totally get it. Those guys deserved everything they got!”

I haven't seen the John Wick movies, but I tend to be far more angry when anyone hurts animals then people. On screen or in real life.

That is the big one, yes :). That ship and Wincest (as the one with the brothers is called) are basically the two big rival ones in the fandom, but yeah, from my understanding, Dean/Cas has well surpassed Wincest in terms of popularity over the years.

(Seriously, it says something about how popular "Supernatural" is in fandom circles that even if you haven't seen the show, you still likely know something about it and/or its fandom :p.)

Thanks for clarifying! And may I just say that Wincest is a hilarious name? And I generally hate couple names. But I agree that I would not want any incest couple on TV, unless it is obvious it is meant to be disturbing, like Jaime and Cersei.

Yeah, some shows you just happen to hear about, even if you don't care one bit. It probably helps that I am a big fan of Doctor Who, Sherlock and Good Omens and it seems that fans of these shows tend to cross over a lot.

  12. Pardon my ignorance, as I have never watched Supernatural, but from occasionally hearing/reading from its fans, I was under the impression that the big ship was between one of the brothers and an angel played by Mischa Collins, not between the two brothers. Have I got it wrong this whole time? : D

  13. Well, I fail to see how a piece about gun laws could be made funny. The very next episode - Local News was both very funny and informative. Except for the bit about abortion laws which was quite scary, so I would not appreciate if he tried to make fun of that, anymore than of gun laws. With some topics you just have to be serious. And since the last year was especially hard, I don't think it is any surprise that there are more serious topics lately. But there are still some more lighthearted bits inbetween. I think there has a been a good balance, IMO.

The show certainly has its moments, but does anyone else feel that the writers never outlined the story they wanted to tell with that show and just worked season to season with too much focus on viewer reactions - especially when it comes to romance? Not that life in your 20s/early 30s is that predictable, but it feels like those 3 girls are always playing a game of pass the bad luck/decision parcel.

I certainly feel that both Sutton and Richard and Kat and Adena were given so much focus because those were popular with viewers. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but with Kat and Adena they seemed to go back and forth too much IMO.

I feel like Jane is a terrible boss. Not because she has the hots for Scott, but because of how she was treating Addison. Addison asked Jane and Scott what they were working on, and Jane tells her they are wrapping up for the day.....then turns around and asks Scott to help her track down the assistant. Then Addison asks to help and Jane gives her the task of transcribing an interview, but then asks Scott to come to NYC with her and apparently writes the article without even using the interview. Seems like preferential treatment for the guy she likes to me.

Exactly. And it seems that it's going to bite Jane in the ass because she never checked what Addison sent her about the interview. I can't say I feel sorry for Jane.

I have to say, as soon as they said they were going to an overnight retreat, I thought that is just a story device so that Jane and Scott can hook up. I was pleasantly surprised that they didn't go there, but then was dissapointed when Sutton and Kat supported her in her feelings. That was a time to be a friend and tell her the hard truth.

Speaking of hard truths, has the show ever addressed Sutton's drinking problem? I thought about it a lot, especially since she flipped on her mother when she found she was drinking again... and then went on a drinking spree herself, which continued for the whole episode. I don't know if there is enough time to address it properly, but they shouldn't just leave it as a big drunk elephant in the room.

  15. JR sometimes crossed from hate to love to hate for me, but Jock stayed firmly in the hate zone. Plus, he was responsible for JR, so that is like a bonus.

It's sort of like while I hate both Roose and Ramsey Bolton, I find Roose worse, because he was responsible for Ramsey's existence and character. (Yes, I know that adult people are responsible for their own actions, I never said that the hate is completely rational : D)

  18. As I was looking through one of the other threads, I saw Dallas being mentioned, so I was reminded how much I despised Jock Ewing there. There were many terrible characters who did terrible things, but he gets the top prize from me. Horrible, stuck-up, arrogant SOB. I was relieved when he died, but of course the other characters had to continue trying to get his approval even beyond that.

My most hated moment was when John Ross was born and Jock matter-of-factly decided how he was going to be named and nobody even thought about contradicting him. Well, STFU! No one gets any say in how a child is named except their parents, specifically the mother. I so wanted Sue Ellen to throw in his face that the child is probably not his grandson anyway, since that was what she assumed at the time.

And don't even get me started on how he and J.R.* kidnapped Lucy from her mother as a baby!

    * and I'm giving the saint Miss Ellie blame for this as well. The others were heartless SOBs, but since her whole thing was how she cared for her family, she should have been empathetic to Val. But she probably assumed that a poor teenager's feelings were not comparable to her own.

And speaking of taking children from their mothers of lower social status, Mr. Bryant from Downton Abbey and Squire Hamley from Wives and Daughters can f*ck themselves as well.

I was wondering if LWT told the shows that the product was a gag. Well, they certainly know now.

I think they probably wouldn't care, as long as they get paid. I mean, they must think some of the other products are complete BS and that the people that present them know it. I wonder whether they sometimes joke about it with them off camera and laugh about the people that will buy it.

It’s not quite obvious, but the first is a 13th Doctor adventure. Both seem to be geared at younger readers. Both are available on Amazon US and UK, in paperback and Kindle

Thank's for the info. I don't read any of the tie-in material, but it's cool that there will be a story with 13th Doctor and Missy. I wonder if we could get them together on TV at some point.
