  1. Ha! I was trying to be gender-neutral, but I think I accidentally made the point that 'the baby' is nothing more than a prop 99% of the time.
  2. I wonder if they are going to employ the soap-opera "rapid aging mode" with Beverly Rose consisting of the following 2 stages: 1. There's a big ballyhoo about the pregnancy and birth, and "the baby" is the major focus for a few shows, and then: 2. Baby disappears and boom, the next time you see it, it's 5 or 6 years old (and on a comedy show, can recite some smart-mouth lines).
  3. This is full-on soap opera now. I did like Daniel's reply to the clueless fill-in weather doofus about how horrible it was to be outed. His demeanor and tone of voice was perfect.
  4. WTF is going on? Who thought it would be a great idea to first have the meandering non-conversation to open the show, and now I guess the new bit are the interrupting correspondents? Trevor looks like he's sitting at an IKEA desk. This is the recharged studio show?
  5. That makes about as much sense as anything. He may not have even meant it intentionally, but it definitely has a ring of irony. Or, he could have been using the song as more of a warning that anything. Maybe it'll play again over the end credits in a future song.
  6. Why (Coming to) "America"? It just seemed like such an odd choice. Well, so did the singing, but...."America"?? And I can't quite remember, but didn't he say something in his "intro" about how this goes out to a very special lady, like what? A song about immigration? Had he been practicing that song in the mirror for days, because he thought it showcased his talent? Poor Daniel. I do think he's been bypassed a lot, and I understand his frustration, but WTH? That being said, Mia calling him "Bojangles" made me wince. This show is so bizarre this season, it's all over the place. I do think somebody's or more than one somebody is going to get COVID, at least that seems to be what they're leaning towards. Bradley is insufferable.
  7. I'd forgotten what it was in response to, but Jackie telling Darlene "You dress like a house painter and your face can suck the sun right out of the sky" was pretty funny. Mean, but funny. But that's how they all talk to each other and they all seem to take it in stride, so who am I to judge. But I agree that "you were sweeter when you were drinking" and "I miss my tipsy little angel" was not great. Good point about where is Emilio and Beverly Rose. And Beverly Rose lives there. Where are they stashing her? Also, quietest baby ever. I like the guy playing Mikey but the "let's have sex!" storyline was just odd to me. There had been no flirting, no prolonged eye contact, nothing to indicate chemistry between them. Not sure where they're going to go with this, since having Becky in a relationship at this point in her recovery is just completely unwise. It really seems like the writers don't think past one episode at a time, nor have they watched any Roseanne episodes to get much background on anyone. I don't hate the show, but it seems so sloppily thrown together at times that's it's really sad. The original episodes had all kinds of backstage turmoil going on but they still produced an amazing show.
  8. This encapsulates quite a lot of what myself & others feel about BM's shows now. https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2021/8/21/2047330/-Real-Time-with-Bill-Maher-has-become-unwatchable?detail=emaildkbow
  9. What I can't wrap my head around is that Bill got Covid after getting the vaccination and he's still poo-pooing the idea of getting a booster shot??? I can only speculate that he thinks he would have still gotten a mild case even if he didn't "take one for the team", whatever the bleep that means. He is really delusional. And @BrownBear2012, I do remember previously reading that information about his eating regimen now. "Teenage girl bordering on anorexia" describes it well. He's gone off the deep end in so many ways.
  10. I'm 68, a few years old than Bill, and I don't think of myself as "elderly" (that's more the 80-and-up age range in my mind, but we'll see what happens when I get there). But I definitely think I'm in a more vulnerable age group and I'm realistic about it. I try to keep a healthy diet and I go to the gym 3x a week, and of course I got vaccinated and will be at the head of the line for a booster shot. I ran across a term recently that I think describes Bill: "orthorexia nervosa", an obsession (to the point of an eating disorder) with healthy eating. I believe he has stated in interviews that he mostly eats berries and protein shakes, but treats himself to a piece of fish once a week. I can only speculate that being skinny is, to him, the ultimate secret of eternal youth. That and, of course, he's extraordinarily special and quite above the hoi-polloi *eyeroll*.
  11. I love in California and, yes, all registered voters will get a mail ballot, but there is an option to vote in person. Which may or may not satisfy the people who love to scream VOTER FRAUD with no evidence whatsoever. For the record, there are 45 candidates on the ballot running against Newsom. Larry Elder is a freaking nightmare and (sadly not surprisingly) the front runner against Newsom. He has a long history of making horrifically disparaging remarks about women, thinks there should be a minimum wage of zero, and wants to abolish any mask or vaccine mandates, in addition to those pesky anti-immigration and other completely racist remarks he has made. To circle back to the show, I am once again more than happy I made the decision to not watch BM anymore. Not familiar with the other 2 guests, but with BM & Andrew Sullivan whining about "cancel culture" (poor dead horsie, can we stop beating it?) and Bill's needle being stuck on fat people, "millennials" and anti-pandemic control measures...and now cellphones??....I can only shake my head at the resentful, embittered, sour old man he's become.
  12. I don't pay attention to a lot of show-biz gossip (not to virtue-signal, I have plenty of guilty pleasures such as being lazy and indulging in waaaay too much online shopping) so I wasn't aware of whatever rumors or hearsay there was about Daniel Radcliffe. I did a quick Google search and from that I've gathered that he fully supports the LGBTQ community (he's being quoted as saying that "some people think I'm gay, which I think is awesome" and is particularly tickled by the fact that he apparently has a "gay face".) But he's had several long-term girlfriends, so no. He's a great ally, but no. Getting back to the show, I've actually really enjoyed the last few episodes, after almost bailing after the first two of the season. I don't think anything could equal the magic of Season One, but then again, nothing could equal the magic of that amazing dance routine.
  13. I agree; it took me a few episodes to get into this show in the first season, but by third episode I was absolutely in love. This season....meh...maybe it'll pick up. IDK. Not feeling the precocious teenager at all. Was kind of bummed out with the dog scene in episode one (which pretty much happened right off the bat). Nate is being kind of a dick now that he got promoted, will that be addressed? I keep thinking that this "Rebecca looking for love" storyline is going to end up with Ted & her together. They're about the same age, they understand the other's struggles. Hopefully if and when that happens, I'll be invested in the outcome (in general).
  14. I read in an EW article that Daniel Radcliffe took no convincing at all to do that scene; he was quite committed and enthusiastic and practiced it extensively on his own time. It definitely paid off because it was nothing short of amazing. This episode turned me around on this season, not only because of that scene, but it just seemed sharper and funnier overall (and no animal deaths!) I hope it can keep up the momentum. Here's the EW article; it's very short (in case you have the short attention span that I normally do) https://ew.com/tv/shirtless-daniel-radcliffe-vogue-miracle-workers-oregon-trail/
  15. I found it especially weird that he had a casual chat with Melissa about trying to win over the schoolmarm and asked for her advice; and she seemed fairly unfazed by it, or pretended to be unfazed. I've thought that perhaps "finding his true love" will mean finding that he really does love singing and performing. That's very schmaltzy, but in keeping with the theme of the series, it also could mean intentionally schmaltzy. I watched the latest episode yesterday and woke up with "Suddenly I Love You" as an ear worm today 😄
  16. I know I am way too tender-hearted and shouldn't take things in comedy series so gravely, but the bald eagle getting shot in the last episode and then the buffalo in this one is a little too much. Is there going to be an "animal death of the week" every time now? Yeah, I know, lighten up. (the guy getting eaten by a bear didn't really faze me though, so there's that) Anyway, Mr. Littlepaw is about to throw in the towel but I'd like to give it another episode or two. I absolutely love all the actors but compared to the brilliance of Seasons One and Two....well, I just don't know yet.
  17. I'm just here to say "All the girls that dilly-dally, end up dying in an alley" may be the best line I've heard so far in this series. I love this show.
  18. Well, apparently Josh had a whole Schmigadoon-appropriate outfit in his backpack, including high-waisted pants, suspenders, and a gold bow tie :) ETA: And if I'm not mistaken, a bowler hat!
  19. I found this magazine ad from 1952, so I'm pretty sure they had been around for at least a few years. I was born in that era (the 50s) and definitely remember them; every girl had them in their 'pocketbook' in a little plastic cover.
  20. I remember on a show in the not-too-distance past where he referred to himself, during his monologue, in all seriousness, as a liberal. I wish I could remember more details about which show it was, or I'd track it down. But I do remember the comment, because I was absolutely floored. It was well after he'd gotten into the habit of sneering "oh LIBERALS" at the audience when they didn't bust a gut over some joke he had told. And he's referred to in the media a LOT as a liberal. I really hate to make blanket "in the media" statements but it's true more often than not. But I did find a couple of interesting articles in my research. This one speaks for itself: https://www.commondreams.org/views/2019/10/05/phony-liberalism-bill-maher And there's this article from Rolling Stone, in which he plainly describes himself as a "libertarian" and more of a "Goldwater/Reagan" Republican. It's from 1999, but I don't think things have really changed too much for him, except ~maybe~ he's not quite so blatantly sexist in his speech. Which is not to say he's not any less sexist, he just puts up slightly more pretense now than he used to. https://www.rollingstone.com/culture/culture-news/checking-in-with-bill-maher-in-1999-69781/. There's more than a few sentences that are really quite nauseating.
  21. I do think this was the best show of the series so far. Somebody made the comment in another episode thread that they love that Jean Smart is not afraid to show herself in an unflattering physical manner...no makeup, hair a mess, and now post-surgery (kudos to the makeup people on this episode). One thing I was wondering....did Marcus seem really uptight/pissy when Deborah called him? He just had a fun night getting drunk and dancing through the sprinklers, topped with a sexy visit from the Water Cop. Why did he seem to be in a bad mood, or is it just me that read it that way?
  22. I believe I remember the New Rules rant, and it wasn't hard to find on YouTube. It was in 2014, before Bill started metamorphosizing into....whatever he is now. (Interestingly, the "Berkeley incident" was just about a month before this show.) But I remember cringing at those mean-spirited "jokes" (I mean..."smelling like pee"? Yikes) about Biden's age last year, and thinking WTF, I thought ageism was a major pet peeve of his. And now he's completely changed his tune again and even slams the comics who did/are basically doing his previous material. And no, I don't think he would say the same things about Bernie. It's really just kind of sad that Bill used to be a sharp, witty, observant commentator and now I guess can't remember or admit that he said the exact opposite of something not very long ago. Maybe it's his age [snark].
  23. Almost exactly a year ago, Bill did one of his lame "24 Things You Don't Know About...." bits about Joe Biden, and most of the jokes centered around Biden's age and supposed lack of mental acuity, har har, including his "observation" that Biden "was usually late and smelled like pee". A few months before that, Bill did a bit about "Biden's mangled movie lines", including these: "Are you talking to me? Speak up, I can't hear you" “I’m mad as hell and I’m not going to shop at this Walgreens anymore.” “I feel the need, the need to pee" But now Bill's all anti-ageism? Really? REALLY? And chiding those comedians that "expected Biden to show up to work in his pajama bottoms"? And taking aim at (of course) millennials that don't respect their elders and yatata yatata. Uh............................................wow..........................
  24. Absolutely. I couldn't cite the exact date or episode he seemed to flip, but back in 2016 I could at least enjoy his show, when he used to needle Trump for being a thin-skinned, "whiny little bitch". Ironic much? He did defend Ashlii Babbit a few months ago, by somehow (bizarrely) tying her discontent about the election results to being a "struggling business owner" who was somehow forced (?) to take a short-term loan with a high interest rate, and that's all California's fault, because (this was the topper, his coup de grace) the state cared more about her "toxic whiteness" than her "toxic brokeness". Well, California does have predatory lending laws, as do half the states in the U.S. But as we know, he's got a bee in his bonnet about California, where he nevertheless continues to live. And where he came up with this "toxic whiteness" shit is beyond me. If that's not a Tuckerism, I don't know what is. He really hasn't spoken up much about the insurrection, or hate groups, or gun laws (the latter, I recall, he used to be passionate about). No, now it's fat people and solar for his mansion and "cancel culture", although I don't believe he's made a peep about the calls from the flip side to boycott NFL/MLB/Coca-Cola/ Delta Airlines/ViacomCBS/ Citigroup/ UPS/etc. etc etc. His ratings have been sinking and it's time for HBO to pull the plug or get a better host.
  25. Yes, and he's very often weirdly defensive of those who have been accused of gross sexual misconduct. The last one that comes to mind was Armie Hammer (now under investigation for rape charges); at the time there were several reports of emotional manipulation and physical abuse. Bill blamed Hammer's accusers and compared him to the protagonist in Fifty Shades of Grey "the most popular book ever" (?). It was pretty nauseating.
