My father died of a heart attack right after I turned 13. I had a week off from school because my family had to sit "shiva" for a week. That is Jewish mourning where you cover all the mirrors and wait for friends and relatives to visit you and bring food, etc. After a week, I had to go back to school and had to mourn in private.
