  1. I think he was just desperately trying to find something positive to say - he certainly couldn't say anything good about the vocals. Seriously, it was getting funny watching the coaches struggle to find something halfways positive to say after the performances. The only decent vocals came from Bryan and Alisan - the rest sucked canal water. Kata sounded like she was coughing up phlegm.
  2. I hear ya on that one. PureDWTS was speculating that this was a case of a star requesting a pro, and for me that's the only scenario that makes sense, because Edyta coming back after sooo long is so out of left field - especially since Geraldo seems to be the type of star they would give Emma, and she's totally out this season.
  3. Ginger is still on maternity leave from GMA. She'll probably still commute, but at least she's just doing DWTS and not both shows. I would have preferred Lara from GMA, but Ginger should be pretty good.
  4. OK, so American Smooth is more of a qualifier than a separate style? Their dance makes more sense now... Agreed. The routine was spectacular, but her dancing, while solid, was not perfect by any means.
  5. Impressions, based on the Youtube clips and the Guardian blog: Jay & Aliona: fabulous. A proper salsa, and he was properly relaxed and having fun. Where the judges' 10 paddles were for this I have no idea. Jamelia & Tristan: really lovely. A few frame issues, but otherwise her best since the charleston. If this does end up being her last week, she's going out on a high. Anita & Gleb: Wow. Wowawewawewow. And I'm not just talking about the male dancers :). That was a proper paso, and that was fabulous. That said... there was a couple of minor technical issues (slightly wobbly in the turns just after the jacket bit) that for me put it as a 9 rather than a 10. Katie & Anton: Gosh, Anton really can choreograph ballroom, can't he?? What a glorious routine, and a lovely performance from Katie. Craig is a week late with his 'wobble' comment, as while I saw a few wobbly bits in last week's performance, I thought that this week's was her most assured since the tango. Peter & Janette: Goodness, but he sucked canal water. I was trying to decide whether the lack of content was because of Janette being a mediocre choreographer, but I've decided that he wasn't getting the dance, so she bailed and made it as flashy as possible - and added lots of extra flash and wore a ridiculous fringed costume (and this is from someone who loves fringe) to distract from the fact that Peter cannot jive to save his life (and after that, he might have to). Georgia & Giovanni: OK, so they were supposed to dance an American smooth, which is supposed to be basically a flashy foxtrot with lifts, right? Except that they were assigned a song with a very definite 3/4 time... so basically, Giovanni choreographed a waltz. And a gorgeous waltz it was. But they weren't assigned a waltz, so I'm a bit torn about this one... Helen & Aljaz: I'm not sure what dance the judges saw, because what I saw was a bit of a hot mess. I loved the concept and staging, and she started off fabulously, but then she slipped on the entry to the second lift, and ran out of steam at the end, meaning she lost her timing (she literally started on the wrong foot at the chorus line section). Overscored. Kellie & Kevin: A cute and clever number - I especially liked the bit with the synchronised typists.
  6. Once again, my comments are based on watching the Youtube clips put up by the BBC, plus the live blog on the Guardian's website: http://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/live/2015/nov/07/strictly-come-dancing-2015-week-seven-live(really worth a read, the blogger is pretty spot on). Peter Andre finally danced as well as we've all been expecting from him. Jeremy still made me giggle. I thought both Jamelia's VW and Katie's quickstep were lovely, but both had small bobbles that unfortunately spoiled the overall performance. Loved Jay's AT, but agree with the live blog that he needs to emote more - he needed just a shade more intensity. Helen's legs were stunning, but she had no hip action whatsoever. Anita and Gleb have really grown on me in recent weeks, and think with this jive they're serious contenders. Someone in wardrobe really hates Kellie and Kevin. And why is she moving - does she think she'll be in the bottom 2 this week? OK, if confusing performance. I'm finally on the G&G love train - that was an absolutely fabulous samba. Best dance of the night IMO.
  7. Well, the Guardian live blogger (http://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/live/2015/oct/24/strictly-come-dancing-2015-week-five-live) is of the opinion that Katie and Anton kind of got hosed score-wise, and I'll agree. Yes, it was messy in spots, but it had more pure salsa content than G&G's disco-salsa. Yes, Georgia danced it cleaner, but her pigeon toes still bug. Jamelia still can't get through a full ballroom routine without getting flustered (and that's really what it is), but I still saw marked improvement over her last ballroom routine, so hoping they'll at least make Blackpool. Gosh, I hope Ainsley gets the votes - I just love him. It's not so much that he doesn't have the right technique as he's inventing his own, wacky technique. Maybe we can get him his own cooking/dancing show? I've been mainly lukewarm on Anita and Gleb, but that really was a fabulous tango. They're one of those couples that's slightly under the radar, but could end up still there at the end. Kellie and Kevin are also in this category - great jive, although I felt the theme was a bit clunky and distracting. I love me a rock&roll paso, and I love me some Jay & Aliona - so yeah, I pretty much loved this. Although guy-liner would have been nice. Just sayin'. Jeremy's dances always reduce me to fits of giggles. Which is fine when you're dancing a silly jive, but not so good when you're trying to dance an elegant waltz. You're supposed to sweep her elegantly across the floor, not pull her like a sack of potatoes you need to load into your lorry!
  8. So this is what Anton can do with a contender. No comedy distractions, just full-on tango. I loved Katie's ice-water-in-her-veins attitude, and her posture was pretty good too. More of this please. I just know Daniel is going to be the bane of my existence. Apparently he has a pretty rabid fanbase, so I suspect will be treated to a series of "dear-in-the-headlights" performances until we manage to get rid of him. I really hope for Tristan's sake that Jamelia can start getting the hang of technique. Her attitude was all kinds of right, but her legs and feet were all kinds of wrong. OK, it's official: Jay is my "unexpected favourite" of the season. That was a beautiful waltz, and I think he may have the strongest technique of all the male celebs. What he needs to do now is start relaxing and enjoying the dance - we almost got a smile twice, I want fully curved lips next! I'm still 'eh' on Peter - it was good, but I'm still not feeling his technique is all that solid. Gosh, but I love Ainsley. Yeah, he messed up the side-by-side bit, and that end lift was terribly laboured, but I don't care. Please UK voters, keep him on as long as possible. I need more Ainsley madness in my life.
  9. For those not in the UK and thus not able to watch live, the Guardian newspaper has a live blog of the show here: http://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/tvandradioblog/live/2015/oct/03/strictly-come-dancing-2015-week-two-live
  10. I'm right with you on the Tristan/Anton final, although I think both Jamelle and Katie have some work to do. Jamelle's waltz was generally lovely, but she did seem to get lost a bit in the middle. Katie's jive was all sorts of fun, but she danced it a bit small for me; I want a bit more action on those kicks and flicks. I shall be upfront and proclaim my undying love for Ainsley, but even factoring in my natural prejudice, I don't think he was the worst of the night - I would give that title to Iwan, who tangoed like he had to go to the loo and was holding it in. Ainsley's posture needs work - and I was mentally screaming "shoulders down!" throughout his performance - but I don't think his footwork was horrible; I actually think that they were disadvantaged by the song, which has an odd beat for a tango. I miss significant chunks of Jeremy's dance, mainly because I kept breaking out in fits of giggles. I would be OK with him being the contestant-who-lasted-too-long, as I think he could really develop into my guilty pleasure. Jay wasn't nearly the trainwreck I feared he would be after seeing his first steps video. I thought he actually got the rhythm of the cha cha cha down right, and while not perfect it was a solid effort. OK, I acknowledge that Peter gave a great performance. However, I'm not sure, technique-wise, he's as good as we think he is. A lot of that performance was down to Janette's choreo and the song, both of which were fab. I will refrain from proclaiming him the best thing since sliced bread until we see his ballroom posture.
  11. To a certain extent, I agree with you. However, here's my problem with Paul: when he performs, I'm usually thinking "well, he's good... but he's no Ronn Lucas". 'Cause if anybody here remembers Ronn Lucas, most of Paul's best bits - the off-synch mic test, the echo, even the 'Howie-as-dummy' bit - are all bits Ronn has done, only usually better (certainly Ronn's echo is far superior). Just do a search for 'Ronn Lucas' on Youtube if you want proof. And if anyone thinks it's a coincidence - well, Ronn Lucas had a TV show in the UK in the '90s, so there's no way Paul hasn't seen him. I actually preferred his finale performance than a lot of posters here because I didn't pick up any bits that were obviously taken from Ronn.
  12. I have to agree that I'm a lot more excited about SCD this year than DWTS, and will hopefully be able to follow most of it on Youtube. Encouraged by the fact that given there's only one female celeb over 50 - and surely she must be Anton's horse, right? - that Tristan has an excellent chance of getting someone with potential. And I adore Ainsley Herriott, so I'll have someone to cheer for on the guy's side as well.
  13. Thank goodness the woman who had never heard of Greenwich Mean Time was eliminated. Seriously - are people that hopeless at math? And time zones? None of this is rocket science!
  14. First of all, I am sooo pissed that I missed the spoilers about the start line being at the Chateau Frontenac. I would have totally gone out and staked out the location had I'd known. I can see people struggling with French pronunciation, but honestly, is 'quai' that foreign a word??? Well, it must be if our Montreal Italians don't have a clue what it refers to. Had I been stalking the production, I could have totally told them where to go, as it happens to be the main cruise ship dock. Then again, considering how ridiculous she was acting at the water task, I'm glad I had no part in aiding them whatsoever. Being a bit of a James Duthie fangirl :P, I totally loved the TSN challenge. That was a bit of a mean fake-out, however, essentially giving the impression of a physical task. All in all, a satisfactory first leg, although there are already a couple of teams that will wear very thin very quickly.
  15. Air Canada is their main sponsor. I seriously doubt the producers of TAR Canada are paying anything for the flights - the cost is being covered by AC's marketing budget. AC wanted to publicize their new premium economy seats, so popped the racers into them on the way back from Paris. Their desire to push their new N/S YYZ-DEL flight, along with TAR's long-standing love affair with India seem a perfect match.
